NW SolarFest has teamed up with ShoreDOG to produce what may be the world’s first Doggie Trash Fashion show using dogs as models.

These fashionable, innovative outfits will be created from recycled trash— items that would have been tossed into landfills.

The show will take place at the Solar Powered Stage at NW SolarFest at 2 pm on July 26th at Shoreline Community College.

If you are interested in participating, ShoreDOG and Flytes of Fancy will be hosting a Trash Couture Workshop (no dogs this time) July 8th, 6:30-8:30 pm, Room 301 at Shoreline City Hall.
You will need to bring your dog's size measurements.

So, email for more details.

Final fittings will be at the Shoreline Farmers Market at the ShoreDOG Booth from 11am to noon July 12th.

We will show off our creations at the Market at noon.

Barter the Bounty of Your Garden at NW Solarfest

Thursday, July 12, 2012

Backyard Barter will be hosting a free barter event where you can trade homegrown and homemade food and related skills

On Saturday, July 28th from 2pm to 4pm community members interested in bartering can bring produce, eggs, honey, seeds, plants, tools, canned goods, promises of a helping hand in the kitchen or garden, and mentoring skills to trade with their neighbors. The only rules are no money and have fun.

The barter will be taking place at the NW Solarfest located at Shoreline Community College. This is an outdoor space so attendees should dress themselves, and their goodies, for the weather. In addition to the barter, this event will also include a solar cooking demonstration. For more information, or to RSVP, email or visit the website

This event is part of a series of bartering events hosted by the group Backyard Barter. Backyard Barter was formed by North Seattle residents with a desire to build community while helping to encourage neighbors to grow and share food and skills. The Backyard Barter Project is funded through a Small and Simple Matching Grant through the Department of Neighborhoods and is fiscally sponsored by Seattle Tilth.

In addition to monthly in-person bartering events, Backyard Barter hosts a website that barterers can use to coordinate and trade with their neighbors all year round. The site allows individuals to describe what they have to share, learn from each other and arrange bartering relationships with their neighbors.

About Backyard Barter
Backyard Barter is a community where neighbors barter locally produced food, related skills and items like seedlings, eggs, extra produce, canned goods, the use of garden tools, expertise in garden construction and design, and a helping hand with food-related projects. Backyard Barter is a project of Seattle Tilth and funded by a Simple and Small Matching Grant from the City of Seattle’s Department of Neighborhoods.

Shoreline Farmers Market shines at SolarFest on Saturday

Wednesday, July 20, 2011

The Urban Garden Co-op provided a fantastic assortment of local organic fruits and veggies.  Photo from SFMA.
The Shoreline Farmers Market Association gave the community a taste of their plans for next year’s farmers market last Saturday at the 8th annual NW SolarFest.

The market was a featured attraction at the renewable energy and sustainable lifestyles event held at Shoreline Community College. This was the second year SolarFest was held at SCC and the first year a farmers market was included in the festivities.

Selection of local products included; local and organic fruits and veggies, local artisan and baked goods, local canned goods, and representatives from multiple Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) groups. Along with their volunteers, the Association hosted an informational booth with site plans, brochures, promotions and plenty of information for anyone curious about their project.

Carleton Farm displayed value added goods, cherries, information about their farm's events and one of the eye popping additions to SolarFest, a 20ft air powered pumpkin cannon!   Photo from SFMA.

Popular topics of discussion from the community were the day of the week and location for the farmers market.
“We loved the enthusiasm from the community at NW SolarFest. We got amazing feedback and reached many Shoreline neighbors who weren’t aware of what we are doing” says Brendan Lemkin co-founder of the Shoreline Farmers Market. “Everything went right for us Saturday. The community was excited, our vendors were pleased with sales, and the sun broke through after a rainy, overcast morning.”

The Shoreline Farmers Market is slated to open next spring. The proposed location is in the park adjacent to the LEED Gold City Hall. The SFMA believes this to be Shoreline’s most central, accessible, visible, and high traffic area, perfect for a farmers market.
