SnoKing School Retirees find a new service project

Thursday, January 23, 2020

Kids in Transition

Food Lifeline, the usual service project in Shoreline for the SnoKing School Retirees, was forced to move to south Seattle to find more space and that caused us to seek something closer and more accessible.

That's when we became aware of Washington State Kids in Transition operating right under our noses.

;More than 600 homeless children attend school in the Edmonds School District. Many of these children leave school each day and may not have anything to eat until the next morning. Some don't have clothes or shoes that fit. Others need immediate help finding a place to sleep with their families.

What started as a grass-roots effort has grown into a community-wide passion thanks to Washington Kids in Transition. Through donations, contributions, and support Washington Kids in Transition provides basic needs to homeless children and families throughout the district.

The local unit partners with 16 dedicated bus drivers that transport these homeless students before and after school and provide small food bags to sustain them until they return to school the next day.

That's where SKSR Unit 23 comes in. On Saturday, January 4, 2020, 27 of our members met at the Edmonds Methodist Church to pack these bags.

We had previously collected $766 in donations with which to purchase Cheez It Crackers, Soft and Chewy Granola Bars and Welch's Fruit Snacks.

In one hour and 15 minutes our team filled over 2,500 bags which filled 39 bins. This was our 2nd January to offer this support but with twice as many volunteers as last year. All who came left with a feeling of fulfillment and pride.

This was a good fit for a group of retired school employees and something we'll definitely program again for next year.

Shoreline Severe Weather Shelter - can you help?

Saturday, January 11, 2020

By Lisa Surowiec, NUHSA

Oh my, it’s getting cold out.

Whether or not you’re buying into the Snowpocalypse 2020, the fact is that we’re headed for colder temperatures and likely a little bit of accumulation as early as Sunday.

If you’ve been tightening your coat closer to you as soon as you step outside, and have felt the relief of stepping back into your warm house, consider how it must be for our unsheltered neighbors. And how much worse it’s about to get.

The shelter will officially open on Sunday evening. The hotline number for information is 206-801-2797

The Shoreline Severe Weather Shelter opens on nights that sustain temperatures below 34 degrees for at least 4 hours or there is more than 2 inches of accumulated snow. We plan to activate for the first time this Sunday. Through the commitment of some amazing, fabulous volunteers, we will be able to protect 15 adults from the cold overnight.

Can you help?

We are looking to expand our roster of volunteers to ensure coverage on these cold winter nights.

Volunteers work in pairs and for a full night’s shift. Starting at 8pm to go through opening procedures, and opening the doors at 8:30pm. Guests will leave by 7:30am, and volunteers will leave by 8am.

If you are interested in this opportunity for community service, we invite you to attend the next training, Sunday, January 26, 2020 from 1-3pm.

Please email shorelineewshelter@gmail.com for details and to sign up to attend. Volunteers must be 18 or older.

In partnership with the North Urban Human Services Alliance (NUHSA), the City is using a portion of the former Shoreline Police Station located at 1206 N 185th St as an emergency severe weather shelter this winter. (See previous article)

Shoreline emergency severe weather shelter

Tuesday, November 12, 2019

Tent City in a February snowstorm
Photo copyright Marc Weinberg

During the snowstorm of this past February, the overnight winter shelters across the region quickly reached capacity.

The City of Shoreline identified a need for an additional overnight shelter when weather conditions become extreme.

In partnership with the North Urban Human Services Alliance (NUHSA), the City is using a portion of the former Shoreline Police Station located at 1206 N 185th St as an emergency severe weather shelter this winter.

NUHSA is recruiting and training the volunteers and providing needed shelter supplies. The City, in addition to providing space, is handling the permitting process and assisting with volunteer recruitment and training as needed.

The shelter officially “opens” on December 1. The threshold for activation will generally be a prediction of four-plus hours of temperatures at or below 33 degrees overnight or snow accumulation or expected accumulation of 2 or more inches. When activated, the shelter will be open from 8:00pm to 8:00am.

To make the shelter successful, we need volunteers to help staff it during activation. Committed and compassionate volunteers must be over 18 years old and commit to being on-call for a certain number of nights each month between December 1 and March 30.

Volunteers will be provided with training and then will be responsible for welcoming guests and supervising the shelter overnight (partial shifts can be arranged). Volunteers will be paired with another person during shelter activation.

If you would like to volunteer, email staff@nuhsa.org or call 206-550-5626. For more information about the emergency severe weather shelter, contact Community Services Manager Colleen Kelly at ckelly@shorelinewa.gov or 206-801-2251.

Join United Way’s Free Tax Preparation Campaign in the Fight Against Poverty

Saturday, October 19, 2019

Volunteer at your neighborhood tax site.

Every year in Washington State, low- and middle-income families and individuals struggle to pay the bills and keep food on the table.

During tax time, it can make an unstable situation even worse. Not only is Washington’s tax system the most regressive in the nation, but predatory tax preparers could charge upwards of $300 for a tax return, and may not tell their clients about certain credits or saving opportunities they might qualify for.

Clare visited one of our United Way tax sites. She was a single mother of two making $30,000 a year. She struggled to pay her housing and grocery expenses. During her time with our Free Tax Campaign volunteers, she received a $3,000 refund at absolutely no cost. This meant that she was able to meet some of her basic needs to support her two children.

In 2019, our amazing volunteers helped 21,975 people by bringing back $30.1 million in tax refunds and credits in the process. For many of our clients, this helps them to cover the cost of basic needs like food and shelter. For this upcoming tax season, we’re hoping to make an even bigger impact in our community.

To do this, we need your help.

We rely on our talented team of volunteers to make this possible. Join us and fight against poverty. We provide free comprehensive training that will boost your skills, and help reach the people who need it most. No prior tax experience needed!

A Community Circle of Support for Shoreline and Lake Forest Park residents

Kind+co Events Cocktails for a Cause
Wednesday, for NUHSA
By Donna Hawkey

Three Lake Forest Park entrepreneurs are hosting a party for the North Urban Human Services Alliance (NUHSA), and are highlighting the strength of our communities at the same time!

On Wednesday evening, September 25, 2019 Kind+co Events is sponsoring NUHSA’s fall fundraising event called “Cocktails for a Cause.” And you are all invited, too!

It’s going to be a vibrant party and includes specialty craft cocktails and appetizers. But also, guests will have the ability to admire and shop at pop-up artist’s various booths. This is an innovative idea from three women who want to give back to the community.

While listening to some cool tunes brought to you by LFP resident DJ Zach, and taking in the big view of Lake Washington from the Lake Forest Park Civic Club, you will also be socializing with your neighbors, friends, and elected officials.

100% of the proceeds from this event will be donated to NUHSA. The NUHSA organization is well-positioned to advocate for the ever-increasing and critical human service needs in North King County and includes all of Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, Bothell, and Woodinville.

Specialty craft cocktails and appetizers will be
available at Wednesday's event for NUHSA.
Places are still available.
Entrepreneurs Deci Evans, Nicola Dahlin and Leslie Eck started Kind+co Events after meeting as involved parents at the local elementary school their kids were attending.

They took on the job of chairing the school’s auction and succeeded in growing that auction’s results from $10,000 to over $100,000 in just five years!

If you’ve ever been involved in school auctions, you will understand what a feat this is for these three parents.

These enterprising moms realized the satisfaction they receive in helping others raise money for important causes. Through all that, they decided to start Kind+co Events. Their LFP business can do all the creation and management of a special event, or they can do just a part of it.

They are honored to be able to give back with their “Cocktails for a Cause” annual in-kind event to NUHSA for 2019.

“NUHSA as an advocacy umbrella organization brings support to currently hundreds of non-profits, and lines-up perfectly with our mission of bringing about social service awareness,” says, Ms. Evans.

And this is the second year Kind+co Events has generously awarded an organization “who give so much to their communities.” Last year’s recipient was HaART, a program out of Harborview Medical Center.

The Civic Club is a lovely space with a
sweeping view of Lake Washington

Tickets for this Wednesday’s event on September 25th from 6:30-9:30 pm each cost $50. Please consider purchasing a ticket and enjoying this party. Also, you will learn about NUHSA and its essential, growing, ever-challenging and rewarding community work!

NUHSA seeks to “establish a sustainable system of social and health services.” Consider supporting them through this journey. Cocktails for a Cause: NUHSA

Second Rampathon build gives Shoreline resident the freedom to move about

Sunday, May 19, 2019

The crew from Jackson Design Build is ready to work

Each year, Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish (MBAKS) members and community volunteers head to homes throughout King and Snohomish counties to build wheelchair access ramps. For free.

Because our neighbors in need deserve the same freedoms we have.

Since 1993, members have provided more than 500 ramps during Rampathon. These ramps provide a much-needed benefit for individuals and families who struggle to get themselves or their loved ones safely in and out of their homes.

This year member organizations built 40 ramps, including two in Shoreline. (See previous article about the ramp built by Shoreline-based Irons BC).

The second ramp was built by Jackson Design Build, based in Ballard and serving north Seattle.

The ramp was constructed for Shoreline resident Lydia Arguelles. Lydia had a heart attack in 2017 and has severe arthritis in her hips and lower spine. She has difficulty walking up her stairs without assistance.

She now has a ramp which is safe for her to use with her wheelchair - a relief for her and her family.

NUHSA event May 19 - documentary screening, discussion and tour Hopelink

Wednesday, May 15, 2019

Join NUHSA on Sunday, May 19, 2019 from 4 - 7pm at Hopelink (17837 Aurora Ave. N. Shoreline) for a special screening of Trickle Down Town, followed by a facilitated discussion and tour of Hopelink, a local emergency services provider and food bank.

Tomasz Biernacki’s new thought-provoking documentary about the homeless crisis in Seattle deftly interweaves in-depth stories of community members who are living the crisis on the streets with interviews of political leaders and community advocates, along with vivid images of the current state of affairs and a poignant examination of the roots of homelessness in the region.

Biernacki paints a picture of a region struggling to come to grips with an unprecedented emergency and finds a few glimmers of hope.

Biernacki says, “I have discovered that most people have... knee-jerk reactions and false beliefs... about the homeless.

They see the tents, the RVs, the addicted people who have untreated mental and physical health issues, and instead of doing something to help their neighbors, they degrade, cast away, and add insult to injury.

I want people to see that there are concrete, simple steps people can take every day to help the situation. It’s going to have to be a grassroots effort.”

The event is free and open to the public. Donations are gladly accepted.
