The joyous thrill-ride is over.

On a cool, drizzly Seattle evening, on a familiar piece of turf, Shorewood girls varsity soccer met its match and then some, in the form of mighty Holy Names.

The Metro 3A District 2 champions met the Wesco 3A District 1 champions, and anticipation was in the air.

After the opening thrust and parry worthy of a fencing duel, the Cougars struck hard and fast with their speedy and skillful wingers to score on a breakaway.

The second goal was an unfortunate T-bird own goal, at which point the cause was lost. Holy Names sensed blood in the water, and their opportunistic statuesque sharks headed in a third goal for a substantial halftime lead.

Hope flickered briefly when a defensive error conceded a penalty kick, for our star #6 to stroke it home to cut the deficit to two. The Cougars slammed shut any comeback when a defensive lapse allowed a ferocious unstoppable shot from outside the box into the roof of the net to add a fourth goal.

The T-birds battled valiantly, but the Cougars put on the defensive clamps to snuff out any offensive threat from the fabled front four of the senior twins and super sophs.

As Shorewood piled forward in a desperate attempt to score, Holy Names substitutes applied the coup de grace to mercifully end the struggle of a worthy gladiatorial adversary. There would be no miracle rally this time, and we wish the Cougars well, as they continue in their own quest to capture soccer’s prized chalice.

We recognize and salute our departing Shorewood senior players:

#3 Eile Goett, Left Fullback
#5 Hannah Alexander, Center Midfield
#6 Jadyn Smith, Center Back
#12 Jill Anneberg, Defensive Midfield
#16 Kate Grutz, Attacking Midfield
#17 Morgan Manalili, Striker
#18 Kaitlyn Manalili, Center Forward
#22 Teagan Aw, Right Fullback

Shorewood soccer shaken but stirred into rebound for State Tourney win on Nov 12

Monday, November 15, 2021

Shorewood T-Birds holding their District 1 trophy
In soccer’s State Tournament, seedings and rankings are meaningless, as on any given day, anything could happen.

The Shorewood T-birds were flying high, seeded #7, on a 3-game winning streak in the District 1 playoff, winning the final in dramatic fashion.

The Lakes' Lancers (from Lakewood), seeded #10, went through the rugged District 3/4 playoff, fighting through the loser’s bracket to earn a State berth.

Except that the underdogs were not going to go quietly into the good night, scratching and fighting for all they were worth. In the first half, a scuffle for the ball outside the box turned into a hopeful lob that swerved high and dipped beyond the reach of the Shorewood keeper, to take a 1-nil lead.

The T-birds were undaunted as they had overcome such deficits before, and would surely unleash their vaunted quadruplet firepower on the Lancers. As the T-birds surged forward, the Lancers counterattacked quite against the run of play, unexpectedly launched a rocket from outside the box to score, taking a 2-0 lead.

Shock turned into horror as realization dawned that their run could end even before it had begun, as the clock ticked down towards half-time. A corner kick was quickly taken, and as the ball pinged around the six-yard box, #10 stabs home a crucial goal, to cut the deficit.

After the halftime pep talk from the coach, Shorewood comes out intent on controlling possession and methodically applying offensive pressure on the Lake's defense. A quick burst down the right flank, a gorgeous first-time volley in the box by #10 to embrace the brace, and gratefully tie the game, 2-2.

More attacking pressure results in a PK and the ace penalty kicker #6 coolly strokes the ball into the bottom left corner to take the lead. A keeper error from a simple turn and shoot by #3 extends the lead, 4-2. A clumsy challenge just outside the eighteen-yard box allows another direct free kick by #6 to bury it in her favorite bottom left corner to seal the game.

Lakes would score a consolation goal on a goalie bobble to end the game 5-3. Shorewood would face powerhouse Holy Names, and it would turn out to be A Tale Of Two Nights.

Shorewood High School’s girls varsity soccer team wins 3A District 1 Championship, and going to State

Shorewood Soccer team wins 3A District 1 Championship
and will be going to State competition

Shorewood high school’s girls varsity soccer team put on a bravura performance last Saturday night in wet, freezing conditions at the 3A District 1 playoff final match of the league postseason soccer tournament.

They wrapped up the Wesco 3A league title on October 28, 2021 with a record of 13-2-0, and qualified as the #1 seed for the District playoffs, with the top RPI ranking in the league.

In the quarter-final, they faced arch-rival Shorecrest in a local derby, getting a flattering 3-0 win.

The semi-final was a much closer affair against Northwest 3A challengers Ferndale, spurning several chances, but making the decisive strike to eke out a 1-0 triumph. This earned them the right to face the #2 seed Snohomish in the 3A District 1 Championship Final on Saturday, November 6th.

In a game punctuated by torrential rain and a brief stoppage for hail, the difficult conditions produced a taut, nervy battle, full of twists and turns.

Shorewood Thunderbirds would take the lead on a brilliant free-kick, but the Panthers tested their mettle, equalizing late in the final quarter. Shorewood responded quickly, with another magnificent free-kick by their stalwart center-back, #6.

With the clock ticking down into the final two minutes, Snohomish sent forward wave after wave of attacks as Shorewood clung on desperately. In the waning moments, Snohomish sent one last frenzied shot that arcs high and perfectly below the crossbar into the net, sending the game into overtime.

A Golden Goal in OT would instantly end the game, producing high drama, with several close shaves and near misses. It seemed inevitable that this pulsating match would end in the ultimate of gut-wrenching endings, Penalty Kicks, punishment for not winning the game in regulation.

The kicks begin routinely with four consecutive goals easily made, then two high kicks over the bar by each side, and two more made kicks, placing the game squarely in the balance of the last two kicks. The nerve-wracking ordeal was beginning to take its toll, and the Panther player blinks first by clanging her shot off the right post.

T-bird captain and MVP #6 steps up, fixes her steely gaze for one more wonder kick, and calmly slots home the ball. Pandemonium ensues, as they lay claim to the title of 3A District 1 Champions. Shorewood gets their Senior redemption, where as Freshmen, three years ago in 2018, in the same District Final, against the same opponent, they had lost a penalties heartbreaker.

Shorewood’s JV team finished the season undefeated with a superb record of 12-0-2, finishing 2nd in the league table.

Shorewood had last week claimed another more impressive prize, namely the 2021 WIAA 3A Girls Soccer Academic State Champions, with an outstanding cumulative 3.95 GPA. They thus repeated their achievement from 2019, reaffirming their status as true scholar-athletes. (see previous article)

Can they top it with the trifecta of a 3A Soccer State Championship as well? That chapter remains to be written, as they attempt to do what was last done by their predecessors 22 years ago, in 1999. The State Tournament begins November 12/13 and ends November 19/20.

Shorewood soccer seniors go out in style

Thursday, October 28, 2021

By Coach Dan Faires

On a cold and wind driven evening at Shoreline Stadium, Shorewood Seniors played their final regular season game. They went out in complete style:

A hat trick for Senior Kaitlyn Manalili, followed by a brace for Sophomore Amelia Severn and an incredibly epic, header finish from Senior Morgan Manalili on a cross from Jadyn Smith.

Meadowdale never wavered though and competed for the duration of the game as they pulled one back late to avoid the shutout. In a wild, explosive game for the Thunderbirds, they emerged victorious 6-1 over the Meadowdale Mavericks.

Goals:
  • Kaitlyn Manalili (3)
  • Amelia Severn (2)
  • Morgan Manalili (1)

Shorewood vs. Shorecrest girls varsity soccer 10/19

Friday, October 22, 2021

Great win for the Thunderbirds in an always intense, fiery competition with the cross town rival Shorecrest on Tuesday, October 19, 2021.

This one didn't disappoint. From the first whistle it was physical, but the Shorewood players united and competed like warrior poets.

We never lost sight of our game and how we chose to play it against a quality opponent in Shorecrest. They are a tremendously talented group, and always tough to compete against.

Senior Center back and Captain Jadyn Smith was the player of the game, scoring from a set piece in the first for a 1-0 at half time before sending a beautiful cross into the box where Senior Midfielder and Captain Morgan Manalili was waiting and placed an elegant header in the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.

Jadyn led the defense to hold the shutout and Freshman goalkeeper Sophie Schindler maintained the clean sheet.

Shorewood High School girls soccer vs Arlington

Saturday, October 9, 2021

Incredible come from behind win Thursday night for the Thunderbirds!

After giving up the go ahead goal in the 13' minute of play, the Thunderbirds found themselves with a hill to climb.

Arlington is a tremendously fast and defensively disciplined team and their keeper stood on her head as we peppered the goal with 22 shots.

In the second half and some minor adjustments, the Thunderbirds found their game.

Jadyn Smith scored a Penalty kick (assisted by Kaitlyn Manalili) in the 42' minute and in the 44' Morgan Manalili set up a beautiful ball on a platter for her twin sister Kaitlyn to finish and capture the lead.

Thunderbirds victorious 2-1.

Just published: We All Wore Blue - the FC Shoreline International youth soccer team

Saturday, December 28, 2019

Players gathered for their 10 year reunion and to
celebration the publication of the story of their team
Coach / author Emerson Robbins at right

"We All Wore Blue" is the true story of a Shoreline youth soccer team comprised of players from as many as seventeen different countries, every major race and religion and how the team came together and embraced one another and celebrated their differences on their journey to winning two Washington State Championships in 2006 through 2010.

The team was located in Shoreline and was actually named FC Shoreline International.

Their coach, Emerson Robbins, has written a book about the team, which can be found on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and most of the prominent Northwest area bookstores.

It's an inspirational story for our country and the world, especially important for today's turbulent times.

Centerpieces and decorations included flags from the
17 home countries of the players

The players, now in their late 20s, reunited recently at the Innis Arden Clubhouse in Shoreline to celebrate the book launch and their ten year anniversary.

A successful screenwriter is working on developing the story into a series aimed at Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu or one of the other networks.

Here is Robbins' account of their beginnings

I was born in Seattle, but I grew up in the Los Angeles area. My family moved here (Shoreline) in 1998 and lived there until 2010, when we moved to Whidbey Island, where my wife and I currently live.

I have coached youth soccer for over 35 years. After coaching for about twenty years, when we moved up here I began coaching my youngest son's team. It was the typical youth soccer team you'd find in most parts of the country, except it may have been the worst team I'd ever seen.

The coaches were just Dads who didn't really know too much about soccer, but were trying to do the right thing by their kids and the team. They had not won a single game during the first three years of the team's existence.

Once I took over, the team started winning, but also changing.

It's a long story, but somehow, without any real intention, the team attracted many immigrant kids who wanted to play. One day, there was a tall African boy watching our team practice and seeing him jealously watching, I invited him to join our practice. It turned out he was from Ethiopia and he and his family had just come from a refugee camp in Kenya just weeks prior to coming to WA State.

They were living in subsidized apts in Shoreline, just a block or two from the park we practiced at. He loved playing on our team and soon began sharing his joy with other immigrant kids in his ESL class at Einstein Middle School.

Within a year or two, other immigrant boys joined our team and before long, there were more kids from different countries, races and religions than there were white suburban kids.

The team continued winning and improving.

We ended up all bonding, the players and the families and enjoyed incredible international feasts, with food from as many as 16 different countries. The parents could not afford to pay the high costs of the youth soccer fees, so I helped pay their way.

However, the families could cook, so we all enjoyed these amazing get togethers.

This became our FC Shoreline International team, which ended up winning our respective league titles every year as well as two Washington State Championships.

From the worst youth team I'd seen years earlier, we transformed into one of the top youth soccer teams in the State.

However, the real story was how we all became close and the players and families all celebrated our differences.

People from dramatically different economic circumstances, different races, religions, etc.
And no one on the team cared about such superficial nonsense.
We just had fun together, sharing what we had in common, the love of soccer and the incredible food from all these assorted cultures and countries.

I knew our story might be of interest to many, as whenever we would play an away game, people would look at our motley group and wonder where we were from and how we happened to come together.

However, it wasn't until our current President started speaking so disparagingly and cruelly about immigrants, than I was motivated to have our story told and began writing the book, "We All Wore Blue."

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College women's soccer sophomore back Maggie Taylor (Lake Forest Park, Wash./Shorecrest) earned the Northeast-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, Oct. 28.

Taylor scored a game-winning goal while aiding a defense that posted two shutouts, allowed 2.5 shots on goal per game and went 1-0-1 last week.

In a 2-0 win on Thursday over the University of Maine at Fort Kent, which was ranked second nationally by the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), Taylor scored the opening goal just 4:55 into the contest while helping limit the Bengals to just two shots on goal.

In a scoreless draw with regionally-ranked Assumption College on Saturday, Taylor and the Purple Knight defense yielded just three shots on goal, and only one in the two overtime sessions.

The Greyhounds were sixth in the latest United Soccer Coaches East Region poll. Taylor has started nine times while appearing in all 14 games, scoring once and adding an assist.

Soccer: SC vs SW Girls Soccer - Tuesday 7pm at Shoreline Stadium

Soccer ball photo by Wayne Pridemore
The Girls High School Soccer regular season comes to an end Tuesday night, and for local fans it’s clear they’ve saved the best for last when Shorecrest and Shorewood square off at Shoreline Stadium at 7pm.

Local youth coaches from the Hillwood and Shorelake programs are encouraged to bring their teams (girls and boys) to see our community’s finest players lay it on the line.

District One 3A playoffs await for both the Scots (9-3-1 in WesCo, 10-4-1 overall) and the T- Birds (8-5, 8-7).

But first things first.

Every year this rivalry game stirs the passions of the players, many of whom have played against (and with) each other since their peewee days.
Add to the mix the importance of this game in the final league standings, with District Tournament seedings still in flux, and suffice it to say there’s much at stake.

The T-Birds are playing their best soccer of the season, coming into this match with four straight victories, including an impressive 1-0 win Thursday at perennially powerful Edmonds-Woodway.

The Scots have qualified for the State tournament ten years in a row.

Come Wednesday morning, the full tournament bracket will be viewable here.
