Scots soccer advances to State, beats Squalicum 1-0

Saturday, November 3, 2018

The Shorecrest girls soccer team defeated Squalicum 1-0 Thursday night, thereby making the State Tournament for the eighth consecutive year, tying the school record.

Sometimes a game is won in the strength of a red-hot goalie, other nights a forward cashes in on a couple breakaways.

Thursday the greatest influence on the game at Shoreline Stadium was the wind, howling from the south.

Scots junior Izzy Menning was able to read the wind just right on a corner kick early in the second half, her right foot deftly placing it over the outstretched arms of the Squalicum keeper and tucking it into the far-top corner for the game’s only score.

SC keeper Maia Kaje, a junior, did the rest, preserving the shutout and propelling the Scots to State for the eighth consecutive year. Previously, Shorecrest ran a similar State streak during the 1991-1998 seasons.

Helping the Scots get to State during that time as a player was Mindy Falor, now SC’s Head Coach, Mindy Dalziel.

The Scots will learn their seed and bracket fate on Sunday when the WIAA announces all the pairings. State bracket is found HERE.

Shorewood Soccer advances to State - Play for District Championship Saturday

Thursday, November 1, 2018

Soccer ball
The Shorewood girls soccer team defeated top-seeded Edmonds-Woodway 2-1 Tuesday night and have qualified for next week’s State Tournament.

But there is still important business at hand for Coach Gary Harris’ T-Birds as they’ll face powerful Snohomish for the District Championship at Shoreline Stadium Saturday afternoon at 3pm.

It was a case of too many Manalilis that made life miserable for Ed-Way Tuesday.

The T-Birds got on the board first against the Warriors when freshman Morgan Manalili poked home a rebound two minutes into the second half to break the scoreless tie. Sixteen minutes later twin sister Kaitlyn flashed her lightning speed to score on a breakaway to make it 2-0.

Ed-Way didn’t go down without a fight, getting on the board with 13 minutes left in the match. But T-Bird goalkeeper Abby Manis repelled repeated Warrior chances to tie the game, and in the end it was Shorewood who qualified for State with the victory.

In an earlier match Tuesday, Shorecrest kept their State playoff hope alive by shutting out Meadowdale 4-0. They’ll face Squalicum Thursday at Shoreline Stadium, with the winner advancing to State, while the loser’s season will end. Kickoff is 7pm.

Tournament bracket is here.

Soccer Triple-Header Tuesday at Shoreline Stadium

Shorewood’s girls soccer team defeated Shorecrest 1-0 Saturday night and have advanced to the District One 3A semi-finals Tuesday night at Shoreline Stadium against powerful Edmonds-Woodway, the tournament’s top seed.

Kickoff is at 8pm. The winner will qualify for State and play Saturday for the District Championship.

T-Bird freshman Jadyn Smith drilled a free-kick from just outside the box in the first half for the game’s only score.

The Shorewood game will be the third of three matches at Shoreline Stadium Tuesday.

Shorecrest tries to keep their hopes of advancing to State alive with the day’s opening game at 4pm against Meadowdale in a loser-out game. The Scots have qualified for the State Tournament the last seven years.

Snohomish and Squalicum face each other in the six o’clock winners-bracket game.

REMATCH - Scots and T-Birds meet Saturday In first round of districts

Wednesday, October 24, 2018

Soccer ball

The David Bromberg tune “Sharon” features the line (in its raucous chorus about a dancer who always leaves her audience wanting for more), “The same rowdy crowd that was here last night is back again”.

Much the same can be said for the enthusiastic throng in attendance at Tuesday night’s regular season girls' soccer finale between Shorecrest and Shorewood, as their hard-fought 1-1 draw left fans wanting more.

Those fans’ fondest wish has come true as the two teams will face each other in the first round of the District One 3A playoffs Saturday night at Shoreline Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 6pm.

The tournament format is double-elimination. The top four teams will advance to State.

District Tournament bracket is HERE.

Tuesday night’s match was a classic. Shorewood got on the board 30 minutes into the first half on a goal by fleet freshman Kaitlyn Manalili. Shorecrest evened the score three minutes later as senior Maddie Kellogg continued her hot scoring streak for the Scots.

Both teams had chances to take the lead in the second half and the two overtime periods, but a tie game it was destined to be.

Once again, this rematch presents an ideal opportunity for local youth players (of both genders) to come watch superb high school soccer being played by girls who sat in those very stands when they were in grade school, in the days when they were playing for Hillwood and Shorelake.

Local soccer teams to square off in season finale Tuesday

Monday, October 22, 2018

Soccer ball
Tuesday night, October 23, 2018 at 7pm at Shoreline Stadium, the Shorecrest and Shorewood girls soccer teams square off in the regular season finale.

If ever there was a night for local youth coaches (of both boys and girls teams) from the Hillwood and Shorelake Soccer organizations to bring their teams to a game, this would be it.

Nearly all the players they’ll be watching are the product of the two programs, and watching the ‘big kids’ play can teach them invaluable soccer techniques as well as great lessons regarding sportsmanship, effort, hustle, and team play. Dry weather is in the forecast.

The teams come into the game with very similar records. The Scots are 8-3-2 in WesCo action, while the T-Birds are 8-4-1.

Both teams have strong coaches. Mindy Dalziel is at the helm for the Scots, while long-time local coach Gary Harris leads the T-Birds.

Both schools have long, proud, and successful programs, with State Championship banners adorning the walls of both gyms. Michelle Akers, arguably the greatest female American player, was a Scot, while her US National and World Cup Champion teammate Lori Henry (who is a long-time assistant coach for SC) played for the T-Birds.

Nina Lowe, a two-sport SW State Champion (in soccer and basketball, as well as a former T-Bird girls basketball coach) was on the 1999 championship team, while Scots coach Mindy Dalziel won State in 1992 and 1993 as a player at Shorecrest.

It will be the first meeting of the year between the two teams, and with the District One 3A playoffs starting next weekend, much is at stake.

Those teams ranked in the top six in the complex RPI system earn their way into Districts with a bye into the tournament, while those ranked 7-10 must win a dreaded ‘win-or-go-home’ play-in game that precedes Districts. Both teams have a chance to finish in the top six. A top-four finish earns a team a first-round home game.

The latest RPI rankings can be found HERE.

The outcome of Tuesday’s match will go a long way to determining the final seeding of both teams, as well as deciding if either (or both) teams get a first-round home game next Saturday.

Players to watch - For Shorewood, freshman twin sisters Kaitlyn and Morgan Manalili are very technical ball-handlers with great awareness, along with the ability to create and finish plays. Look for senior defender Hai-Ying Aw to make long throw-ins. Sophomores Grace Kamilla and Shea Mertel both hustle like crazy.

For Shorecrest - Junior Izzy Menning plays with passion and drive. Junior defender Sydney Van Ness is a stud; an anchor on the back line with a big free-kick leg. Junior Sevi Mitsopoulos, back from injury, is a real playmaker. Senior captain Amanda Kagarabi brings great all-around athleticism and leadership qualities to the team, as well as the experience that comes with having been a part of two state champion teams for the Scots, in track and basketball.

Kagarabi, especially, is looking forward to Tuesday’s showdown.

“I’m so excited for this game. We are all playing for pride, and our games with Shorewood always have a whole ‘nother type of energy. We’re excited to end the regular season on a high note as we prepare for the playoff battle coming up over the next few weeks.”

Shorecrest soccer standout scores goal in her first collegiate game

Thursday, September 13, 2018

Maggie Taylor scores a goal in St. Michael's
game against Northern Vermont University-Lyndon
When high school students graduate, many of them go on to college. Some stay close to home, while others scatter to the four winds.

One such recent grad who has traveled far is Maggie Taylor, Shorecrest class of 2018.

Taylor played four years of soccer for Coach Mindy Dalziel and the Scots, and she is continuing her playing career at far away St. Michaels College, in picturesque Colchester, Vermont, population 17,000.

With an enrollment of 2,000 undergrads, St. Mike’s is just north of Burlington, a stone’s throw from Lake Champlain.

In her first game for the Purple Knights last week, Taylor scored her first collegiate goal, and added an assist for good measure.

Afterward, Taylor said “I am having so much fun and the team is amazing - super supportive and a good environment. It’s a lot harder than I expected but a lot more rewarding”.

She is majoring in Political Science and Business.

Maggie is the daughter of Pat and Tina Taylor, who live in Lake Forest Park.

Soccer game at Ridgecrest Elementary

Seattle Poppy walks the neighborhoods of Ridgecrest, Meridian Park, North City, and photographs the interesting things that she comes across. She has found deserted playgrounds, charming lawn ornaments, little free libraries, water for dogs - and the list goes on.

Friday was a bonus day when she walked by Ridgecrest Elementary in the early evening. She found what might have been a pickup soccer match - or maybe an organized team. The players just looked like they were having fun on a summer night.

From the Ridgecrest playing field she went to the covered playground area and found Spanish dancers whirling and kicking with their full skirts swirling around them.

There are so many things going on all around us. Unless you get out and walk, you'll never know the joy that is nearby (unless Seattle Poppy gets there to take a photo!)

Shorecrest soccer to play Snohomish Saturday for District Championship

Saturday, May 12, 2018

Shorecrest's Ricardo Ruiz #10
The boys' soccer team from Shorecrest defeated Lynnwood 2-1 Tuesday night to advance to Saturday’s District One 3A Championship Game against Snohomish.

Game time is 7pm at Shoreline Stadium.

The Scots (8-4 in league play, 12-6 overall) are guaranteed a berth in the State Tournament that begins next week.

Tuesday night, junior midfielder Alex Zahajko scored both Scots goals in the first half, with senior captain Ricardo Ruiz assisting on the first, and junior Noah Trostle setting up the second.

Lynnwood scored their lone goal in the second half to make it close, but junior Goalkeeper Odoum Nith was clutch down the stretch, thwarting all other Royals'
chances to ensure the win and send the Scots to Saturday’s District Championship Game, and to State.

Snohomish, a perennial boys soccer power and a hotbed of youth soccer, will be a formidable foe. The Panthers (10-1-1, 13-3-1) beat the Scots 2-1 on March 23.

Ricardo Ruiz spoke for his team. “We’re beyond excited for the chance to advance to State. It’s been a long journey with our boys, overcoming injuries, red cards, you name it, we’ve been through it.
"We’re a young team with unmatched potential. People who underestimate us will make a big mistake. I’m excited to see how far we’re going to go, and hopefully, at the end of the ride, we will have the State trophy in our hands.”

Shoreline teen selected for International Soccer tour

Thursday, March 22, 2018

Logan Calpito of Shoreline has been selected to participate in the US Club Soccer 2018 id2 National Selection International Tour for the second consecutive year.

He and 17 other youth soccer players were all hand-picked around the nation and will travel to Spain March 22 – April 3.

The group represents 11 U.S. states and 16 top youth soccer clubs in America. Historically, US Club Soccer has competed against top LaLiga clubs including FC Barcelona, Valencia, Villarreal and Espanyol. LaLiga is a technical partner of US Club Soccer’s Players First initiative.

Logan Calpito was raised in Hawaii and played for the Rush Hawaii club. His family moved to Shoreline for better opportunities for Logan to play.

Officially beginning March 28, the tournament concludes with the championship round on April 1. Prior to this, the id² National Selection team will begin its journey in New Jersey with a domestic camp, March 22-24. After an expected arrival in Barcelona on March 25, the team will transfer to the city of Girona for training sessions over the following two days. While in Girona, the squad will scrimmage Girona FC’s top youth academy team on March 26, which will also compete in the MIC. Finally, on March 27, the group moves on to Platja D’Aro for the MIC competition.

The id² Boys Program director Gerry McKeown will lead the team in the id² Program’s ninth trip abroad. Logan Calpito (formerly of Rush Hawaii) returns from the 2017 id² National Selection team. Last year’s team advanced to the quarterfinals of the MIC – the best tournament finish by a U.S.-based team, according to MIC officials.

“It is a unique opportunity to expose our players to games that have consequence,” said McKeown. “At this age, our young players do not play enough elimination games. It will be challenging for them playing against great international clubs when the performance actually counts. In this tournament, if you underperform, it will result in an early departure or more beach time.”

Consistent with US Club Soccer’s philosophy that identification and development should be free to players, the organization is fully funding the trip in conjunction with strong support from Nike. The id² Program is an Olympic Development Program approved by the United States Olympic Committee and U.S. Soccer Federation.

Girls Soccer Shorecrest plays Shorewood Tuesday night

Monday, September 11, 2017

Youth soccer coaches from Hillwood and Shorelake Soccer Clubs would be well advised to pack up their teams and bring them to Shoreline Stadium Tuesday night, as the Shorecrest girls play Shorewood at 7pm.

Both teams are searching for their first win of the early season.

Mindy Dalziel’s Scots dropped a 2-1 decision at home last week in their season opener against always tough Glacier Peak, a 4A team.

Gary Harris has taken over the reins of the T-Birds, and they’ve been blanked in both their early matches, also against top-notch competition. 1A powerhouse Kings topped them 4-0, while 3A Lakeside beat them 2-0.

Harris, a veteran local soccer coach, knows it’s early.

“We need to find ways to score. And while we gave up some goals, we did defend well as a team and many of the goals we allowed are preventable. The girls are working hard and have great attitudes, so I know we’ll improve as the season progresses.”

Senior Anna Whitaker has distinguished herself on defense ever since her freshman year. Senior Grace Morehouse and sophomore speedster Rachel Shoop can run like the wind and are fun to watch.

For the Scots, they are led by masterful midfielder Maggie Taylor, a senior. Sydney Brandt and Laura Hoover, also seniors, stand out, as do juniors Amanda Kagarabi and Maddy Kellogg.

As this is deemed a pre-season game, expect to see nearly all eligible players to see game action.

But just because it won’t count in the league standings, it’s still Shorecrest and Shorewood.

So it still matters.

On to State for Shorecrest Soccer - Shorewood out

Saturday, May 13, 2017

Elliot Misic #9 defends against Shorewood player
in game earlier this year

The Shorecrest boys soccer team defeated Edmonds-Woodway Thursday evening, 4-2, and with the win the Scots have qualified for the 3A State Championship tournament that will begin next week.

But before State starts, the Scots (9-6-4) will play Squalicum (17-1-1) for third and fourth place in District One at Shoreline Stadium. Game time Saturday has been moved up to 3pm to accommodate Squalicum's Prom Night.

Shorecrest needed to come from behind against E-W to keep their season alive. After the Warriors scored with 5:00 to play in the first half, Adrian Ortega tied the score with under a minute to go in the half.

Ortega took a long pass from teammate Elliot Misic and sneaked it past the Warriors' keeper.

"I saw Adrian deep down the right side and was able to get him the ball.  His shot was beautiful, perfect," said Misic. "The timing couldn't have been any better.  His goal gave us a big lift."

SC took the lead for good on a controversial free kick by Noah Trostle with just two minutes into the second half.

"I saw their defenders with their backs turned, thinking time had been called, and their keeper was all the way over by the left post," Trostle said after the game. "There was a huge opening on the right and I made the shot."

Misic scored the Scots' final two goals, one on a perfect pass from Ricardo Ruiz.

"I saw Ricardo take it down the line. I sprinted toward the goal, and he put the ball right on my toe," a sweaty but happy Misic beamed afterwards.

After the Warriors scored on a penalty-kick following a handball in the box to make it 3-2 SC, Misic scored again with under twenty minutes to play.

"I was just outside the box and I one-timed it. It deflected off a defender and went in. Sometimes you just get lucky," said Misic.

Shorewood was eliminated on Thursday in the late game, losing to Squalicum 5-1.

Lynnwood will face Snohomish  at 7pm at Shoreline Stadium for the District Championship.

Shorecrest soccer falls to mighty Snohomish Wednesday - plays Edmonds-Woodway in loser out game Thursday

Wednesday, May 10, 2017

The Shorecrest boys soccer team fell to mighty Snohomish 3-1 Tuesday night in the District One 3A semi-finals.

With the win, Snohomish qualifies for the State Tournament for the 18th time in the last twenty years. They will oppose Lynnwood Saturday night at 7pm in the District Championship Game at Shoreline Stadium.

Shorecrest got on the board first against Snohomish on a Noah Trostle goal just four minutes in. It didn't take long after that for the Panthers' machine to start clicking on all cylinders, though, as they scored all three of their goals in a twenty minute stretch.

The Scots hung around in the second half, needing just one goal to make the game interesting, but to no avail.

Still, Coach Drew Thompson was pleased with his team's performance.

"We really stepped up our game in the second half but couldn't find the net. If we play that hard on Thursday, we'll be fine".

Junior goalkeeper Ben Evans was instrumental in keeping the Scots in the game, making countless big saves throughout the game.

The Scots (8-6-4) will play Edmonds-Woodway (8-8-2) Thursday at 5pm at Shoreline Stadium. The winner qualifies for State, while the loser is eliminated.
