Shorewood boys soccer keep their season alive with win over Arlington

The Shorewood boys soccer team kept their season alive by beating Arlington 3-1 Tuesday night at Shoreline Stadium in a loser-out District One tournament game.

Arlington scored in the game's first minute, capitalizing on a bad T-Birds pass. Senior captain Jack Bong, bound for WSU next year, wondered "is this going to be my last soccer game?". But Bong's teammates picked him up and saw to it there'd be at least one more game for the T-Birds.

Senior Ilya Panek knotted the game midway through the first half after senior Chris Gerbino's long throw-in made it to the far post. Gerbino has proven to be a consistent threat all season with his ability to get extra distance on his throws.

"I played a couple of seasons of water polo, I think that's where my throwing ability comes from", Gerbino said after the game.

SW used another long Gerbino throw to break the tie ten minutes into the second half when Ben Grant headed in the game-winning goal. And Grant provided some insurance not two minutes later when Theo Steinmetz took a free kick from Liam Ammador-Emmons down the left side, beat his defender around the corner, and found Grant in front of the net.

"Liam played a good ball to me. I tried to get the ball inside and Ben was there", said Steinmetz.

The T-Birds (8-8-2) will square off against previously unbeaten Squalicum (16-1-1) in a loser-out / winner-to-state game Thursday at 7pm at Shoreline Stadium. Squalicum dropped to the losers' bracket when they lost to Lynnwood, 2-1 Tuesday.

Scots blank T-Birds 1-0 in Saturday soccer match

Sunday, May 7, 2017

Noah Trostle tapped home a loose ball in front of the net for the only goal in the Scots' 1-0 win Saturday night over crosstown rival Shorewood in the opening round of the District One 3A boys soccer tournament.

Two minutes into the second half, Finn Hoffman sent a free kick goalward. The ball rattled around until it found Trostle's foot, and he just managed to trickle it past T-Birds' keeper Nathaniel Poole for the game winner.

SC Goalie Ben Evans made his best save of the night on a SW header right before the final whistle blew to preserve his shutout and the victory.

With the win, SC advances to the District semi-finals Tuesday night against Snohomish, while the T-Birds face an elimination game Tuesday against Arlington.

Shoreline Stadium will be jumping on Tuesday, with three games on tap.

4 PM - Shorewood v Arlington (loser out)
6 PM - Squalicum v Lynnwood
8 PM - Shorecrest v Snohomish

The District One 3A boys soccer tournament begins on Saturday, and local soccer fans will be treated to an ideal opening round match as the #4 seeded Shorewood Thunderbirds host their crosstown rivals, the #5 seeded Shorecrest Scots at 6pm at Shoreline Stadium.

The teams have played twice this season, with an early non-league game going to the Scots, 1-0, while the second matchup ended in a 2-2 tie.

Both teams finished the season with a pair of shutout wins. The T-Birds (7-4-1 in Wesco, 7-7-2 overall) blanked Everett and Edmonds-Woodway, while the Scots (6-3-3, 7-5-4) skunked Meadowdale and Marysville-Getchell to close out their regular season.

When asked what his team needed to do to advance to State, first year SW coach Gary Harris replied
"We need to keep defending well as a team and limit our opponents' opportunities, and we need to find ways to score through set plays or from the run of play. We want to keep it close with our defense and try to score when our chances come".

SC coach Drew Thompson was more succinct in his analysis of what his team needs to do ....."defend, defend, defend".

#1 seed Snohomish (11-1, 13-2) comes into the tournament as the team to beat. Four teams will advance to the State Tournament from Districts.

The entire bracket can be found here.

T-Birds and Scots slog to 2-2 tie

Friday, April 7, 2017

On a night better suited for ark building than playing soccer, the Shorewood and Shorecrest boys battled to a 2-2 tie Friday night at Shoreline Stadium.

The Scots' Ricardo Ruiz opened the scoring with a goal barely five minutes into the game, as Shorecrest was playing into the stiff wind and sideways rain during the first half.

Mathew Wilkinson tied things up for the T-Birds with a header off a corner kick that got past Scots' goalkeeper Ben Evans at the 25:00 mark.

Shorecrest responded with nine minutes to play in the half when Rhys Kroehler blasted a rebound past the T-Birds' Nathaniel Poole, giving the Scots a 2-1 halftime lead.

Liam Ammador-Emmons knotted the game at two on a penalty kick with just under twenty-five minutes to play in regulation.

Poole made the save of the night with two minutes to play in regulation, stopping a Scots' shot from point-blank range to preserve the tie.

A surprisingly large (given the conditions) and spirited crowd was on hand to support the two teams, and their decorum reflected the great respect the community has for one another.

Shorecrest and Shorewood will renew boys soccer acquaintance Friday night

Thursday, April 6, 2017

Expect Jack Bong (left) to be a standout for Shorewood
By Frank Workman

Shorecrest and Shorewood will renew boys soccer acquaintances Friday night, 7 o'clock, at Shoreline Stadium.

It's a great opportunity for moms and dads, as well as our local youth coaches, to bring their teams out, boys and girls alike, to watch the big kids play and be a part of the action.

The two teams played a non-league game on March 21, with the Scots earning a 1-0 win.

While that game didn't count in the 3A Wesco standings, when these two teams play each other, it always MATTERS.

The Scots come into Friday's game with a 1-3 league mark, 2-5-1 overall, while the T-Birds stand at 3-2 in league, 3-5-1 for the season.

In some respects, new Shorewood coach Gary Harris is going through that awkward, yet exciting, phase of being in a new relationship, as he acquaints himself with the boys on his team and how best to deploy their skills.

"It has taken about 5 games to figure out who plays what position, as well as finding a formation that suits us best," said Coach Harris.
"Now that we have found both, we are just working on getting better as a team. We have had some wins which have helped our confidence but we know we still have a long way to go. That being said, it is a very balanced league this year and if a team does not show up on any given night, they will pay for it."
Coach Harris continued, "Right now we are the true definition of a team. When everyone is doing their job we look pretty good. When somebody messes up it affects all of us. We are just trying to get better as a team."

Goalkeeper Nathaniel Poole, a junior, has come up with several important saves for the T-Birds, while big senior Jack Bong and lightning-fast sophomore Edwin Montiel stand out for Shorewood.

Expect the Scots to count on juniors Ricardo Ruiz and Elliot Misic to provide the team's scoring punch, while junior Carter Clasen defends the net in goal.

Gary Harris
Shorewood High School and the Shoreline School District are pleased to announce Gary Harris as their new Varsity Boys Soccer coach.

Harris is no stranger to coaching in Shoreline and for the T-Birds. While it has been over a decade since Gary coached high school soccer, he has remained active as a coach at the club level, coaching both boys and girls for multiple premier level soccer teams.

Gary also has remained a staple at Einstein Middle School also in Shoreline, where he has been a physical and health education teacher since 1990.

Gary previously was the head coach for nine years for both the Shorewood and Shorecrest girls, including a state title with the T-birds in 1999. Coach Harris has compiled a 99-45-18 career coaching record between the two girls’ programs.

Don Dalziel, Director of Athletics for Shoreline Schools, says "We are thrilled to have Gary return to coaching high school and feel he is a great fit for the T-Birds at this time.
"Gary’s experience and commitment for high expectations and accountability were a key reason he was selected to coach at Shorewood. Gary is familiar with Shoreline, our programs and our procedures. Shorecrest soccer defeats Everett 3-0 to avoid elimination from District 1 Tournament

Thursday, October 27, 2016

Facing an elimination game just to qualify for the Northwest District One 3A soccer tournament, the Shorecrest girls defeated the Everett Seagulls 3-0, on a damp and chilly Thursday evening at Shoreline Stadium.

Lauren Brown, a junior, the Scots' most prolific scorer, sent a blistering shot past the Seagulls' keeper five minutes into the game to give Shorecrest a lead they would not relinquish.

Twenty minutes later junior Julia Strand, a defender, scored her first varsity goal following a kerfuffle in front of the net.

"It was our first corner kick of the game," a happy Strand beamed after the game.
"I called Gabby (Lacson) off the ball and kicked it. I knew it was going in as soon as I hit it."

When Brown was taken down in the second half by a Seagull defender, junior Maggie Taylor capitalized by nailing the penalty kick to close the scoring.

Senior Kate Wiper was in net for the Scots and pitched the shutout.

Shorecrest faces a tough Edmonds-Woodway team in the first round of the double-elimination District tournament at 1 PM Saturday. Four teams from District One will advance to the state tournament

SCC Men's soccer beat Edmonds CC

Shoreline CC in game with Whatcom
Men’s Soccer hosted Edmonds on October 5. The Phins trailed Edmonds by 3 points in the North Region standings and were staring down an early must win game.

A win would pull the Phins even with Edmonds in the standings while a loss would create an almost insurmountable 6 point lead.

The Phins were focused form the opening whistle and a beautiful through ball from Noe Ellen opened John Crate who deftly finished past the Edmonds keeper with one touch.

In the 39th minute an Edmonds foul gave the Phins a direct kick from 40 yards out. Rei Ito played a curling ball towards the back post that continued to curl right into the upper corner of the Edmonds’ goal giving the Phins a 2-0 lead.

Edmonds pulled a goal back in the 44th minute and the teams went into the break with Shoreline leading 2-1. The only goal of the 2nd half came on another beautiful ball from Ellen – this time Angel Alcaraz was the recipient and he added to his team leading goal tally on the season guaranteeing the Phins the win and the much needed 3 points.

The Phins are now tied with Edmonds for 3rd place with 9 points in the North Region. Shoreline is 4-0-6 overall and 3-0-5 in the North Region. The Phins host Everett on Saturday, October 8th at 2:15pm.
