SC Soccer to face defending champs in toughest test

Thursday, November 5, 2015

Shorecrest girls soccer team has a
players-only meeting after their practice Thursday
For most soccer teams, making it to State would be a big deal.

But the girls' team at Shorecrest isn’t just any team, and merely making it to State is only the first step on the way to achieving their next goal … winning a District Championship.

When the Scots shut out Archbishop Murphy Tuesday night, that win earned them a place in the sixteen-team State Tournament.

Before State begins next week, though, they face a formidable foe, their nemesis from last year, the undefeated (18-0) defending 2A State Champions, the Squalicum Storm, Saturday night at 7pm when the two teams face off for the District One Championship at Sedro-Woolley High School.

Coach Mindy Dalziel has been at the helm for the Highlanders for eleven seasons. This will be her team's ninth appearance at State, and the fifth consecutive year the Scots have made it to the final sixteen teams.

Shorecrest (16-1-1) has certainly played well against the stout competition in 3A WesCo, outscoring their opponents 60-6 over the course of the season, including 9 straight shutouts to end the regular season before allowing a goal last Saturday to Lynden in the first round of Districts.

But Squalicum has amassed an even more impressive set of stats, only allowing goals in two of their games while outscoring the competition by a staggering 85-3 mark, including 12 consecutive shutouts.

These two teams were on the same path last year, with the Storm beating the Scots 3-0 to win Districts, and 2-1 in the State Championship Game, both at Shoreline Stadium.

First things first. The two face each other Saturday night and it should be a terrific game between two of the best teams in the state, regardless of their school-size classification.

On paper, it looks like the Scots will need to bring their A game just to keep from being blown out by the juggernaut that is the Squalicum Storm.

Shorecrest vs Archbishop Murphy girls soccer District Playoff game

Wednesday, November 4, 2015

#10 Lauren Brown takes the ball down the field

The Shorecrest Scots headed into the game Tuesday knowing that the Archbishop Murphy Wildcats hadn't lost a game since their 2nd game of the regular season on Sept 12th. They also had only allowed 5 total goals in the 15 games since that loss while scoring 41 of their own goals in that span.

The lady Scots started the game with an unusually weak defensive effort that was allowing Archbishop Murphy's offense to penetrate onto their side of the field. However, once the Scots made a few adjustments, they started to pressure the goal.

Player of the Game: Sophia Viviano

In the 23rd minute of the 1st half, Sophia Viviano scored on an assist from Alexa Iacolucci. This lead gave the Scots a confidence boost that showed throughout the rest of the game. They seemed to gel and really set the pace of the game with clean passes and lots of communication.

While players like Ella Nelson, Mara Trostle, Sydney Coe, Lauren Brown, and Julia Strand all had great games, midfielders Maggie Taylor and Alexa Iacolucci seemed to really dominate the game.

With 27 minutes remaining in the game, Sydney Brandt assisted Sophia Viviano's 2nd goal of the game.

When the final whistle blew the Scots had not only shutout the Wildcats, but they did not allow a single shot on goal! It was an impressive team performance.

With the win the Scots move on to the 2A District 1 Championship game on Saturday, November 7 vs Squalicum at Sedro Woolley High School. The game starts at 7pm.

Senior Anna Boyle and junior Kate Wiper split time in net for the Scots' ninth consecutive shut-out.

When Junior Lauren Brown scored five minutes into the second half, there was a feeling in the air that the dam was about to break. Senior Sophia Viviano netted one five minutes after that, and Brown accounted for another goal with 24 minutes to play in the game. Four goals in 11 minutes.

Sydney Coe scores on a header

Senior defender Sydney Coe scored a rare (for her) goal on a header from senior Mara Trostle in the game's final minute. When asked after the game where on her head she struck the ball for her first varsity goal, a giddy Coe pointed to a spot dead-center on her forehead. "I hit it perfectly", she smiled.
