A familiar face is returning to sideline as head coach of the Shoreline Community College men’s soccer team.

George Dremousis says he is excited about being back with the Dolphins. “It was difficult for me to leave and it feels good to be able return,” Dremousis said.

Dremousis is a life-long Seattle resident, playing soccer at Bishop Blanchet High School and Shoreline Community College before graduating from the University of Washington with bachelor’s degrees in Political Science and History in 1991.

In 2011, Dremousis left Shoreline to take the head job at Trinity Lutheran College where his teams advanced to West Coast playoffs of the NCCAA in consecutive seasons. SCC student voted Baden Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Year

Wednesday, November 26, 2014

Hayley Warren
Hayley Warren was recently voted Baden Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Year by the NWAC coaches.  Warren had recently been named Northern Region MVP for her conference-leading 26 goals. She also had 8 assists while leading the Shoreline Phins to a second round playoff appearance. The Phins lost to Lane 1-2 in that round with Warren scoring the lone Phin goal.

The Phin sophomore was the leading scorer in the conference this season and last, totaling 49 goals while adding 20 assists. She was named Northern Region MVP in both seasons while also playing in the conference all-star game both seasons. Her goal total puts her on the top-10 all-time NWAC scorers list.

Head Coach Aaron Howe says, “Hayley is one of the best finishers in the league. She plays with a lot of heart and leads her team well as a co-captain.”

Warren was the primary forward for the Lady Phins. However, she played defense or outside-mid in high school and club ball, making her accomplishments at the forward position all the more impressive.

“It’s a huge honor. I’m still in shock and don’t think it’s really hit me yet. It proves to me that I can do anything I set my mind to. This award is a culmination of a lot of hours of hard work,” shares Warren.

The Phins finished second in the North, earning the right to host the first round of the NWAC playoffs. The ladies won that round over North Idaho 1-0. Along with teammate Melissa Schuetze, Warren represented Shoreline on the combined North-West All-Star team.

Warren plans on earning her general transfer degree from Shoreline and transferring to a university to continue playing soccer. She plans on pursuing a degree in the health sciences in order to explore a career in physical therapy.

The Shorecrest Scots scored first, but the Squalicum Storm surged from behind to win the 2A State Girls Soccer Championship 2-1 Saturday evening at Shoreline Stadium.

In front of the biggest crowd of the season, enjoying blissfully dry weather, the Scots came out on fire in the first half, looking to avenge a 3-0 loss to Squalicum two weeks ago in the District One Championship Game.

Meghan Wicken scored her third goal in two nights, with assists from Mara Trostle and Alexa Iacolucci, about halfway into the first half to give the Scots the lead. But the undefeated (23-0-1) Storm kept their cool and applied pressure of their own late in the half, coming close to evening the score before halftime.

Kimberly Hazlett knotted the score at 1-1 just seven minutes into the second half on a long blast that found the upper-right corner past Scots' keeper Kate Wiper.

With the Storm applying relentless pressure, it seemed a matter of when, not if, they would score another goal, and that time came with just over six minutes to go in the contest when Kim Dorr scored off a corner kick from Michelle Saunders.

The Scots took home the second place trophy, finishing the season with a 19-5 mark - most of which was compiled playing up a division against 3A WESCO competition, including a 1-0 win over 3A State Champion Edmonds-Woodway.

Shorecrest survives 3-2 - plays For State Championship Saturday

Friday, November 21, 2014

Shorecrest raced to a 2-0 halftime lead, scored again in the second half to make it 3-0, then hung on for dear life to beat the Ridgefield Spudders in the State 2A girls soccer semi-finals at Shoreline Stadium Friday night.

The Scots (19-4)  have advanced to the Championship Game, where they will face the undefeated Squalicum Storm (22-0-1) at 4pm Saturday at Shoreline Stadium. The Scots will be trying for their sixth state championship, and their first since 1995.

Sophia Viviano continued her red-hot scoring spree with the game's first goal fifteen minutes in, giving the lanky junior 31 for the season.

Senior Meghan Wicken put the Scots up 2-0 twelve minutes later on a play that was started by Aleah Redfield. Her pass to Emily Hicks wound up on Wicken's foot, who then put it past Spudder keeper Sarah Kaufman.

Wicken scored what proved to be the deciding goal fifteen minutes into the second half, and Scots fans (and, perhaps, their defense) breathed a sigh of relief.

But Ridgefield came back with a vengeance as their leading scorer Taryn Ries buried a wide open shot past Scots'  keeper Kate Wiper to make it 3-1.

Scots fans squirmed when Kara Klaus slipped one through a scrum in front of the net with 8:22 to play to make it 3-2.

After the game, the happy Scots talked about playing for a championship.

"It's super exciting," said Sophia Viviano. "This team has never played for a state championship before and now we get a chance."

Coach Mindy Dalziel had praise for Meghan Wicken. "She's been an unsung hero all season, and tonight she came up big with her goals. We know Squalicum beat us 3-0 last time, but it will be zero-zero when we kick off, and balls can bounce funny and anything can happen. All I know is, I love my team."

Shorecrest Soccer survives, advances to semi-finals at Shoreline Stadium Friday

Sunday, November 16, 2014

The Shorecrest Scots  soccer team defeated last year's 3A champs, Liberty, 4-3 Saturday night in the quarter-finals of the State 2A Girls Soccer tournament to advance to the semi-finals this weekend at Shoreline Stadium.

Shorecrest, with an 18-4 record this season, faces Ridgefield  (18-2-1)  Friday evening at 6 at Shoreline Stadium in one semi-final match, while Ephrata (19-1) and Squalicum (21-0-1) square off at 8 in the other semi-final.

If it's true that big players make big plays in big games, then the Scots' talented junior Sophia Viviano proved herself worthy of the accolade as she scored all four Shorecrest goals ... in the second half of what proved to be a real seesaw game.

The Patriots, utilizing their home field advantage, came out on fire and scored in the first five minutes, and they took that 1-0 lead into the halftime locker room.

Viviano evened the score thirteen minutes into the second half, only to see Liberty quickly respond with their second goal a mere two minutes later to put them up 2-1.

Five minutes later, though, Viviano tied the game up at 2-2. Then she scored again with 14 minutes left to play to give the Scots the lead, 3-2.

But defending champions die hard, and Liberty tied the score again in the very next minute. 3-3.

With ten minutes to play, Viviano gave her team the lead for the final time with her 30th goal of the season.

"This game did one on my heart. The girls played so hard in the second half. We are all happy to be going back to the Final 4 -  now it's time to get it done," enthused Mindy Dalziel, Scots coach, after the game.  "There was no way we were coming home without that win."

Shorecrest has five girls' soccer championship banners hanging from their gym rafters (1983-85-92-93-96). Their last visit to the semi-finals was in 2008 when they placed fourth.
