Winter wonderland

Yes the driving is terrible. Yes it's a stretch to get all the unsheltered inside. Yes there are many problems that come with prolonged, freezing weather.

But it is beautiful. Krista and Brad Tenney's Shoreline garden is lovely under any circumstances, but it's a fairyland in the snow.

Compact snow and ice on Shoreline roads

Even if you can handle the road conditions, there's still the issue of knowing where the lanes are.

This is SR 104 / Ballinger Way in the Ballinger Business District. It's a four lane road with turn lanes and 40mph speed limit. This is also the site of a serious vehicle - pedestrian collision.

Stay home if you can.

Snow plows are not effective on compact snow and ice

Monday, December 27, 2021

February 2021 snow plow on 15th NE
Every local city has snow plows out to try to clear the streets.

Crews continue to work primary and secondary routes; however, plows are not effective on compact snow and ice.

They are best cleared under thawing conditions and the thaw is not expected until the weekend.

Only after primary and secondary roads are clear will crews start working neighborhood streets and many streets will never be touched.

Many dangerous sections of road have been closed - watch for and observe the signs.

Please don't drive unless you need to be out. With these cold temperatures, ice will be a significant issue, creating dangerous driving conditions. If you do have to go out, clear the snow from your vehicle first so it doesn't fly off and hit other vehicles and put loose snow / ice on cleared roads.

Many restaurants and businesses are closing because of weather conditions.

Feeding hummingbirds during winter freeze

Jan Hansen says "My responsibility is to keep this guy's beverage from freezing."

Christine Southwick discussed this in a previous For The Birds column:

Remember your hummer friends too: In cold weather, full hummingbird feeders don’t freeze above 28°F. Colder than 28F, bring feeders in after dark, and put out again at first light.

Hummingbird feeder wrapped in
non-LED Christmas lights
If it stays cold during the day, tape a hand-warmer against the bottom of the feeder, or use non-LED Christmas lights.

Anna’s hummingbirds feed well into dusk, and come back at early dawn. They need to fill up to survive winter over-night, and tank up in the morning to replenish their energy levels.

So, when the days are short, and the nights are long, the wild food has been mostly consumed, and insects are scarce.

Heat your bird bath, give your yard birds food, and provide shelter from winter weather, and more of your birds will live to see their next Spring.

Other ideas

One local resident put his hummingbird feeder out on top of an insulated thermos full of boiling water. The thermos was still warm hours later and the nectar was still liquid.

Metro and Community Transit on snow routes; Spartan Rec Center closed; temperatures remain low

Transit companies are on snow routes
And it's snowing in Shoreline again!

Spartan Recreation Center CLOSED

Due to issues with the heating system, the Spartan Recreation Center will be CLOSED until Monday, January 3, 2022.

Metro and Community Transit activate snow routes

King County Metro has activated its Emergency Snow Network, reducing service to about 60 core routes that have been prioritized for snow and ice removal. Find more information at Metro Winter Snow Guide.

Community Transit has also activated its snow routes. Community Transit snow webpage

Conditions forecast

Temperatures will continue to be dangerously low this week. Stay inside. If you need to go out, dress accordingly.

There's still compact snow/ice on many roads. Please use caution! Plows can't plow compact snow and ice to the asphalt. Ice and compact snow are best removed under thawing conditions. With the forecasted cold temperatures, it may be several days before roads become clear. We encourage everyone to limit trips. It it is necessary to drive, please use extreme caution on the roadways.

Lake Forest Park City Hall will remain closed through Tuesday, December 28, 2021.

The roads continue to have compact ice. The public works crew has been working very hard in clearing the main roadways.

Salt and sand are in limited supply and can’t be spread on all of the city’s roads. The crews have been able to plow down to bare pavement on some parts of the major arterials.

Low temperatures continue overnight and through the next couple of days. Please limit your vehicle use on the roadways and drive safe.

How much snow did you get?

City of Shoreline Weather Update: Cold temperatures and snow in the forecast

Weather Update: Cold temperatures and snow in the forecast

Conditions forecast

There is the potential for snow Saturday and Sunday nights, but the amount of accumulation expected is still unclear. The real issue will be the cold temperatures, which will begin Saturday and extend well into next week. Temperatures could drop into the teens during that time. Snow, ice, and cold temperatures can make for dangerous driving conditions and put our vulnerable populations at risk. Now is the time to prepare.

For the latest weather forecast go to National Weather Service. (Editor: For local weather Carl's Shoreline Weather Station)

What to do when the power goes out

Snow Removal

Shoreline street crews will apply de-icer, if possible, before any possible snow hits. However, they won't put de-icer down while it is raining as it will just wash away. If it snows, Shoreline crews plow primary routes first. They will continue to work primary routes until the snow stops. Once snow stops and the primary routes are clear, they will then move to secondary routes. Only after primary and secondary roads are clear will we start plowing neighborhood streets.

Please stay off the roads if you can to give crews a chance to clear them and put down de-icer.
Road Closures

Depending on conditions, the City may post road closure signs on some of our known danger spots. You can see where those are on the Snow Event Closure Map. The City may also need to close other roads due to conditions.

Facility closures and/or hours of operations:
  • City Hall and Spartan Recreation Center
  • These facilities will be closed Friday, December 24 and Saturday, December 25.

Shoreline Parks

Parks are open; however, we encourage visitors to use caution. Wet, heavy snow can cause tree branches to snap and trees to fall. Please stay out from under trees and avoid forested park areas.

Shoreline Emergency Severe Weather Shelter

The threshold for activation will generally be a prediction of four-plus hours of temperatures at or below 33 degrees overnight or snow accumulation of two or more inches. Activation will be determined on a daily basis by 9:00am. Call the shelter hotline at 206-801-2797 for activation status. When activated, the shelter will be open from 8pm to 7:30am.

Update: The shelter will be open starting Saturday evening, 12/25, through 12/29. If you find neighbors in need of shelter, please send them to St. Dunstan's Church. We will open the doors to guests at 8pm.

Have you seen snowplows in Shoreline?

Thursday, October 14, 2021

Just in case you are wondering - these are the primary routes that will be kept clear of snow and ice.

No, it's not yet time for Snowmageddon, but the City of Shoreline wants to be ready.

Snow and ice season may be another month or two away, but residents may see multiple snowplows out on the roadway from Tuesday to Friday October 12 - 15, 2021 as crews conduct annual training.

The training provides an opportunity for snowplow drivers and support personnel to review procedures; inspect and test all the equipment; and take to the streets to practice driving the established snowplow routes.

“The work that the snowplow operators do is difficult and dangerous,” said Public Works Superintendent David LaBelle.
“They work long shifts so it’s important that they be well trained and prepared to do that task. This hands-on training gives our newer employees a chance to familiarize themselves with the vehicles and snow routes when there’s no snow on the road, while giving those with more time on the job a chance to become reacquainted with the plow routes and equipment.”

The City is equipped with six trucks fully outfitted with plows and spreaders dedicated to snow removal and ice control. Approximately 6,000 gallons of liquid calcium chloride and 150 tons of rock salt is stocked and ready to aid the snow and ice removal efforts.

For more information on the snow and ice program or to see our primary and secondary plow routes, go to shorelinewa.gov/stormready

White out at RB Saltwater Park

Wednesday, February 17, 2021

Photo copyright Marc Weinberg

This is the closest I have seen to showing how the air was full of snow - tiny particles of white suspended in the air as far as the eye could see. None apparently moving, yet covering the ground ever higher as time went by.

Marc Weinberg photographed this scene at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park during daylight hours.

Save this so you can remember how different this snow was in 2021.

Roses love sunshine - and don't seem to mind the snow

Red rose blooming with patches of snow on the ground

It's not just the daffodils that grow through a cover of snow. Many others flowers are oblivious to 11" of snow and just keep smiling.

I really thought that one of my rhodies was a goner, though. In the snow, what had been a six foot wide bush was half that width. Branches, which had been carefully trimmed up from the ground to avoid ground beetles, looked like they were all on the ground.

Today, he looked completely normal, in fact quite jaunty. He said, "Me? Look that ragged? It was dark and you must have been mistaken." Ok.

So here's another rose Lee found today.

Snow sculptures - everyone gets very creative

Monday, February 15, 2021

The snow was unusual in the amount that fell but also that it was perfect for creating sculptures. Here are some of the photos we received.

A neighborhood group in Lake Forest Park created a cartoon sprite who has been featured in two animated movies - one in Japan and one at Disney - Totoro.
