Seattle Samurai shares space with Namaste Yoga Studio

Seattle Samurai Arts opened in North City on April 11, sharing space with Namaste Yoga Studio at 18021 15th Ave NE Shoreline 98155 (map).

By Joshua Ross, Seattle Samurai Arts

I teach a classically based Samurai Martial Art, or Bugei, called Nami Ryu Aiki Heiho.

Teachings include how to fight with a sword, draw a sword from the scabbard, and fight empty handed using jujutsu and strikes. Through this you can learn self defense for yourself and family as well as how to hold your own personal space and be confident.

Front door to Seattle Samurai Arts

One of my teaching goals is to help students, whether they are kids or adults, become curious about the world and cultivate a desire for knowledge and want to learn -- to reach for a place where learning for curiosity becomes the goal instead of a reward.

To this end Sato Bu Kan offers two curricula - one is a belt system and the other is a no belt system.

The studio for Seattle Samurai Arts

The goal of the belt system is to be a familiar starting point for students who want to be a black belt, but the goal is to get them curious and on a lifelong road to learning for the sake of curiosity.

Any person is welcome to come an learn from me. We accept students from 8 and up with some exceptions for younger kids if the interest is there.

Small business: Caring Transitions

Friday, April 8, 2016

Jennifer Black and her family

West Seattle resident Jennifer Black embraces being an entrepreneur and is truly passionate about providing timely solutions to challenges faced by an aging local population.

She created Caring Transitions to help families and older adults navigate difficult transitions throughout the planning, moving and move-in process for downsizing and care facilities.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates that by 2050 the number of people living in long-term care facilities will double. As this trend plays out in every community in the United States, seniors and their children are faced with difficult issues that range from disposing of a lifetime of belongings to their actual move.

Caring Transitions manages relocation logistics and communications with all parties involved in a move to create the best possible, stress-free outcome. Often times, the best way to begin is with a free home visit, which jump-starts the decision-making process.

The management of antiques and collectibles are often a natural part of the downsizing process. Jennifer offers a solution, as her business incorporates her love of antiques and collectibles. “I am hoping to expand our on-line auction business. There are so many people that have unique and interesting items that they would like to resell or repurpose. With the online sale format, we can partner items together.”

While Jennifer’s office is located in West Seattle, the Caring Transitions Franchises provide services across the Greater Puget Sound. Due to much demand, Jennifer recently expanded services to the Shoreline and Lake Forest Park communities, as well as an office in the south end that provides services into Olympia.

And, while the service is an attractive and worry-relieving option for older adults and their families, Caring Transitions’ is also a perfect solution for busy families and people clearing out the home of a loved one who has passed.

More information here, or call 206-330-0878.

Small Business: Debbie Tomassi - tea towels

Sunday, February 21, 2016

Petal Puss

Debbie Tomassi is a Lake Forest Park-based painter, humorous writer, illustrator and product designer, an artist with a tireless imagination who creates in nearly every medium there is.

Her new line of tea towels signals her entrance into the home decor market, where she’ll be adding more designs and products in the coming months.

Her new line of vintage inspired kitchen textiles are a special product that began when she decided to recreate the kind of high quality kitchen linens from the 1950’s that her grandmothers handed down to her, which are as beautiful and vibrant today as they were when new.

These new, original designs are printed on 100% cotton, and each tea towel is cut and sewn by hand with great attention paid to every detail.

These kitchen essentials will become even softer and more absorbent with each washing, while the colors remain as vibrant as the day you brought them into your home.

Bird Medley
They’ll add a dash of whimsy and a pinch of fun to any kitchen!

Each design begins with paper, paint and brush. The artwork is then digitized and sent to the USA printer who uses a unique process to permanently set the dyes into the fabric.

Order at Debbie Tomassi Design or contact Debbie 206-367-9679.

Small Business: Seattle Tutoring Services

Thursday, February 18, 2016

Schuyler Dunphy, math tutor

Schuyler Dunphy is now accepting new students for math tutoring services in North Seattle, Shoreline and nearby communities. Formerly a fish biologist, Schuyler (pronounced Skyler), began volunteering as a tutor for Catholic Community Services when nerve injuries sidelined him from his research position. He now offers private tutoring for students who are struggling in their classes or seek to achieve top grades in preparation for college.

“Recent research indicates that it is not helpful to categorize people as inherently good or bad at math,” he says.
“Unfortunately, parents often call their kids ‘smart’, thinking that this encourages them and boosts their self-confidence. However, challenges in the academic and professional world are inevitable, and encouraging students’ perseverance in the face of obstacles is a more helpful in fostering long term success.”

As a tutor, he wants to foster his students’ ability to learn independently and appreciate that getting stuck on a math problem is unavoidable and an opportunity for growth.

More information about Schuyler’s services can be found at his website.

Sylvia’s Shoreline store has a delightful beach theme complete with palm trees and cabana style dressing rooms designed by Shoreline local Bev Horgan of International Surroundings in collaboration with Hodge Construction as general contractor. An added bonus - the store utilizes 100% LED lighting, dramatically reducing power usage.

Established in 1975 to fill the needs of local swimmers, Sylvia’s has become a community staple.

Reader Cynthia Sheridan's favorite local small business is Two Trading Tigers on the upper level of Lake Forest Park Town Center at the intersection of Bothell Way and Ballinger Way.

Two trading Tigers! I always find something in their ever-changing inventory: a colorful scarf, a gently used sweater, a unique household item ... and love the reasonable prices.

In 2004 Cherie Lee and Marlee McKibbin opened a consignment shop in the upper level of Lake Forest Park's Towne Center.

They specialize in upscale women's fashions, household goods and furniture.

They carry seasonal items and their Christmas merchandise is out now.

Holiday dishes, decorations, linens.

To place items on consignment call 206-440-5598 for an appointment.

Items must have a recognizable label. Clothing must be cleaned, pressed, and on hangers. They also must be current styles, colors and seasons. There will be a 60/40 consignment split.
