A family fun day! A “share the abundance” food drive for Hopelink, activities for the kids, seasonal décor, and more! Sky Nursery 18528 Aurora Ave N Shoreline 98133, 206-546-4851

  • Please bring cans or packages of non-perishable food to share, or make a donation at the Hopelink table.

Any beds or pots that won’t be put to work until next spring also need a little fall love. We’ll discuss cover crops, mulch, and other ways of protecting your soil so that it can stay in tip-top shape until spring.

Growers will be competing in a number of categories, including breeding new varieties.

Check out the latest introductions, enjoy seeing quality dahlias, and marvel at arrangements, baskets, and vases brimming with flowers.

Once the judging is done (at noon on Saturday), you are free to take photographs, write down favorite varieties (some of which will be for sale at Sky Nursery next spring), and talk with dahlia experts.

Have you tried starting seeds but sometimes had problems?

Emily will help you learn to troubleshoot common problems.

Slight differences in germination temperatures, seed storage, light levels, humidity, and other factors can sometimes make a big difference in your success.

You’ll learn how to diagnose damping-off, what to do about spindly seedlings, and more. Emily will also go over when and how to “pot up” your seedlings and give more detailed information on transplanting.

Feel free to bring in troubled seedlings, or photos, for Emily to diagnose!

The Northwest native bee Osmia lignaria, or Orchard Mason Bee, is adapted to seek pollen in wet and chilly weather that keeps many other pollinators shivering at home. This makes the mason bee ideal for pollinating your fruit and berries throughout our cool wet springs. Ray Strelecki will tell you how to attract and encourage these valuable native pollinators. He’ll cover bee houses, siting, favorite plants, and reducing predation and parasites.

She’ll cover the basic questions about seed-starting and transplanting and show you Sky’s full line of seed starting supplies, from seeds to peat pots to heating mats to mini greenhouses.

11:30 am-Noon-  Enjoy holiday choral music performed by the talented and enthusiastic students of Sky’s near neighbor, St. Luke’s School, under the direction of Joan Dirska.

1:30pm-2:30pm- Plus, a special concert by Strum: Seattle’s Totally Relaxed Ukulele Musicians. These uke-crazy individuals are dedicated to making the world a better place through ukulele music. Kick back and enjoy holiday and Hawaiian music with them!

Northwest Artists in Action is a group of accomplished fine artists who love to create and display their art in public.

The unique feature of the group is that each artist will be creating an art project on site. This gives you a chance to see a painting being created in real time and the opportunity to discuss the art with the artist.

Oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, pencil…. Stop by and admire a variety of paintings and sketches in progress, plus a display of finished original art available for purchase.

And the Puget Sound Dahlia show is happening at the same time!

This presentation covers all you need to know about growing cacti and succulents indoors in the Northwest. Members of the Cascade Cactus and Succulent Society will cover soil, watering, light, pests, display and general care of your plants as well as growing from seed if attendees are interested.
