Final home team double header with Rat City Rollergirls Saturday in Shoreline

Friday, April 1, 2016

Jammers fight for position as ref moves in
Photo copyright Marc Weinberg

It’s Home Team Championships time!! Join us THIS SATURDAY 4/2 for our final home team double header for the season!

First off, we’ll have the grudge match between the Sockit Wenches and Grave Danger. Both teams are battling to stay out of last place… Who will come out on top? Then, watch as the Throttle Rockets - Rat City Rollergirls try to dethrone Rat City’s reigning champions, Derby Liberation Front in an epic showdown to finish out the home team season!

So wear your best Rat City home team gear, and get ready to show your support for your favorite skaters! Although we will have tickets at the door, this bout is bound to sell out, so get your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.

Please join us at the Rat's Nest, 19022 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline, Washington 98133. Buy tickets at the door. General admission tickets are $20. Tickets for children 12 and under are $15.Children 5 and younger are free. Doors open at 4:30 pm, first whistle at 5:30 pm.

If you don't know anything about Roller Derby here is a quick synopsis.

Each team fields four blockers and one jammer, for a total of ten skaters on the track at a time. The jammers are the point-scorers for their team: they wear a star on their helmets, and start behind the blockers. On their first trip through the pack, the jammers do not score points – they are instead fighting for lead jammer position. That means they must be the first to break through the pack without getting knocked out of bounds and without getting any penalties.

The lead jammer referee will signal who is lead jammer by making an “L” formation with their arms, pointing at the jammer with lead jammer status. The lead jammer has the advantage of being able to call of the jam at any time before its natural conclusion (2 minutes).

Once the jammers have lapped the pack once, they can now score points for each opposing skaters’ hips they pass legally (in bounds and without getting a penalty on).

It is not easy though! The opposing teams’ blockers will be impeding the jammer’s movement through the pack while trying the clear a path for their jammer.

First time going to a bout? Here's a roller derby overview.

Each team fields four blockers and one jammer, for a total of ten skaters on the track at a time. The jammers are the point-scorers for their team: they wear a star on their helmets, and start behind the blockers (who make up "the pack").

On their first trip through the pack, the jammers do not score points – they are instead fighting for lead jammer position. That means they must be the first to break through the pack without getting knocked out of bounds and without getting any penalties.

The referee will signal lead jammer by making an “L” formation with their arms, pointing at the jammer with lead jammer status. The lead jammer has the advantage of being able to call off the jam at any time before its natural conclusion (2 minutes).

Once the jammers have lapped the pack once, they can now score points for each opposing skaters’ hips they pass legally (in bounds and without getting a penalty on).

It is not easy though! The opposing teams’ blockers will try to impede the jammer’s movement through the pack while clearing a path for their jammer by hitting and blocking the other team.

Rat City to change name of practice space, calling for community input

Thursday, October 22, 2015

Attention local derby fans and community members — Rat City Rollergirls (RCRG) wants to return the Rat’s Nest to you, the people.

The RCRG would like to give the community the opportunity to vote on the new name of the derby-practice space it maintains in Shoreline, which is currently named the Rat’s Nest.

In 500 words or fewer, tell RCRG why you would choose one of the following names:
  • Seattle Roller Derby Center
  • Shoreline Roller Derby Center
  • Washington Roller Derby Center
Submissions should be sent here no later than November 20 and the results will be announced before the December 5 RCRG bout.

The Rat’s Nest is not only used by RCRG, but various other leagues such as Puget Sound Outcasts, Jet City Rollergirls, Seattle Derby Brats, and Potential Fresh Meat.

After RCRG moved from its original practice space in Ballard to the current space located at 19022 Aurora Ave N in Shoreline, the name from Ballard — the Rat’s Nest — stuck out of habit.

However, RCRG no longer feels the name represents what the space has become — a hub for premiere roller derby throughout King, Snohomish and Pierce counties.

RCRG skaters whittled down a long list of submissions in order to present the public with three choices to select from. The name change is part of Rat City’s recent effort to revitalize its community-care program, as well as strengthen relationships with its derby brothers and sisters.

The Rat City Rollergirls (RCRG) is Seattle’s premiere all-female, flat-track roller derby league. RCRG is composed of about 80 active skaters and many more retired skaters who are still involved. The skaters are divided among four home teams, as well as the All Stars and Competitive Rat Lab teams. It is Rat City’s mission to maintain a competitive athletic program, promote the sport of roller derby, provide quality sports entertainment for fans, and make a positive impact in the community.

Rat City Rollergirls ... an international bout and a knock out punch

Tight squeeze

Text and photos by Marc Weinberg

Sunday, August 23 Rat City Rollergirls played host in Shoreline to the Canadian "Terminal City Rollergirls".

I've written about local events for more than a year, but have never seen this home team deliver such a decisive victory before.

Rat City jammer breaks out early and heads off to score

The jammers broke out consistently early from the pack and picked up stunning support from their team mates. When the Canadians had a chance to score, the Rat City defenders were strong, focused and fearless.

Half time gave fans a chance to get snacks and this youngster
had a great time feeding dad popcorn.
Rat City fans come in all sizes.

In the first bout Rat City "Rain of Terror" set the pace against "Terminal City B" and ended with a win of 292 to 114. Rat City All Stars picked up on that momentum and delivered their own home town crowd a 253 to 72 victory.
Whatever Rat City teams have been doing in training since I last saw them, really showed up on Sunday.
Canadian team graciously accepted their defeat

Tickets available for Saturday's Roller Derby at Key Arena

Friday, April 24, 2015

Season 11 Home Team Championships this Saturday at KeyArena: Derby Liberation Front (DLF) vs. Grave Danger (GD)

This Saturday, April 25, Seattle roller derby fans will have the chance to see DLF and GD add another chapter to their tale of rivalry as they battle for first place in the Season 11 Home Team Championships. When these two teams last played at The Rat’s Nest on April 11, DLF reclaimed the lead with only 13 seconds left in the bout, winning by a mere three points. And in February, GD lost to DLF by six points in another game that left fans guessing until the last minute. Rewind to 2014—DLF won the Season 10 trophy, upsetting GD’s three-year championship winning streak. Saturday’s bout will likely be an unforgettable display of jam-packed, hard-hitting action.

Rat City fans that prefer to root for the Throttle Rockets or the Sockit Wenches can catch both teams in the grudge, which will be the first bout of the double header. Despite a season of sold-out games at The Rat’s Nest, tickets are still available for $17 via Ticket Master. Doors will open at 5:00pm.

The Rat City Rollergirls (RCRG) is Seattle’s premiere all-female, flat-track roller derby league. RCRG is composed of about 80 active skaters and many more retired skaters who are still involved. The skaters are divided among four home teams, as well as the All Stars team and Rat Lab.
