If you missed Shoreline's own Rat City Rollergirls at Key Arena Saturday night you missed two great bouts. This sport is a great spectator/fan activity with the blocking, bumps and bruises of football.

Judge for yourself from these images or better yet, make plans to be in the arena to support Shoreline's only professional sports team.

Next events are March 15 and April 12.  Go to Rat City Rollergirls website for details.

Season 10 Double Header Home Team Bout
Saturday, February 15 at 5:30pm, KeyArena, Seattle Center

Two undefeated teams Saturday night, only one Sunday morning
By Jim Almy

Update your insurance, hug your loved ones, strap on your helmets, and get ready to settle some scores.

When the Rat City Rollergirls Roller Derby teams square off this Saturday, Feb. 15, at the KeyArena there will be a little spill over from last month’s bouts.

Grave Danger, league champions for three years running, are out to reverse their opening bout loss to the Derby Liberation Front (DLF) and will direct their attack against the Socket Wenches, a team that also dropped their first bout of the year to the Throttle Rockets.
Expect another earthquake in the opening bout when the two teams in the league with perfect 1-0 records, DLF and the Throttle Rockets, begin the night on the same track at 5:30pm.

The Rat City Rollergirls (RCRG) is Seattle’s premiere all-female, flat-track roller derby league. Rivalry runs deep between Seattle's Rat City and Denver's Rocky Mountain Rollergirls

Sunday, February 2, 2014

D'evil'D Meggs Wilson from our home team, Grave Danger

The same is true in football as in roller derby: both love to hit and smash their opponents, and they are full of win in Seattle. Shoreline's Rat City Rollergirls laced up their blue and green skates and hosted a Seahawks scrimmage for fans in Shoreline on Saturday, February 1, 2014.

They had a double header, with the ladies of the Camaro Harem playing against a pickup team from the Rat City Rollergirls, followed by the Outcast boys taking on the gals of Grave Danger.

They've laced up their Seahawks skates!

"We're wagered for winning breakfast bragging rights with Rocky Mountain Rollergirls. When the Seahawks win, Rocky Mountain will send us a care package of omelet fixin's and chili peppers, but if they lose, we'll be sending out some salmon lox and coffee to the mile high city. We can't wait to taste that winning breakfast on you, Denver! Go Hawks!!"

Rat City Rollergirls Season 10 opener Jan 18 at Key Arena

Saturday January 18, 2014, Doors open at 4:30, First whistle at 6pm, KeyArena, Seattle Center.

The Rat City Roller Girls Season 10 Opener is coming up fast on January 18th at KeyArena.

"We’re lacing up our skates for a season of fast paced roller derby action and the season opener levels the playing field for each of the four home teams."

They have drafted many talented skaters onto the league since last May, including new recruits from local youth leagues. They have all been training hard for months at our new practice facility in Shoreline for this moment to compete with the some of the best skaters in the nation.

"First bout of the night will be hard hit and fast paced, as the blue bruisers of the Sockit Wenches are taking on the jet fueled speed of the Throttle Rockets. The second bout of the night will leave you on the edge of your seat as the devastating explosiveness of the Derby Liberation Front battles their worst nightmare; the 3 year undefeated League Champions, Grave Danger. Bring your posters and scream your head off for your favorite skaters and teams, as each team is known to visit their own fan sections in the corners of the arena."

Miss Washington 2013, Allyson Rowe, will stop by to sing the National Anthem after the opening ceremonies at 5:30pm. The fan favorite halftime show will feature Waxie Moon and Dance Belt USA. Featured charity, YMCA, will get your blood pumping during intermission with the YMCA Fitness Challenge.

Bring non-perishable food items for Ballard Food Bank for limited edition Rat City Swag. Donation bins will be placed at each entrance at KeyArena.

10 YEARS STRONG
After 10 years, Seattle has proven they are fans of roller derby. Seattle fans have helped break the National Attendance Record for modern day roller derby three times over, at KeyArena, and eventually sold out the lower bowl of the arena.

Rat City puts the same amount of dedication into furthering its local derby community to grow the sport: hosting training camps, coaching junior derby, informally scrimmaging with teams from nearby leagues, or hosting tournaments at our Rat's Nest in Shoreline. In order to gain acceptance as a mainstream sport, the skater athletes of Rat City believe that when one person skates better, we all skate better. In recent years, skater athletes have been drafted from youth leagues who have advanced to the level where they are rostered with our All-Star Teams.

Aside from furthering the skating community, the athletes of RCRG are dedicated to providing community outreach through events, activities, and charity partnerships with Ballard Food Bank, Seattle Goodwill, Girl Scouts of Western Washington, and Special Olympics of Washington.

The Rat City Rollergirls (RCRG) is Seattle’s first all-female, flat-track roller derby league. RCRG is composed of about 80 active skaters and many more retired skaters who are actively involved in the organization.

Rat's Nest hosts roller derby playoff party - and you're invited

Friday, November 8, 2013

Team Rodent

By Patricia Guthrie

First, they skated into Shoreline to set-up a new “Rat’s Nest” training center. Now they’re off to an international championship. The Rat City Rollergirls are scheduled to compete Friday, Nov. 8 in the 2013 WFTDA Championship Tournament in Milwaukee. And fans can catch all the action on live WFTDA-tv at a Championship Viewing Party, starting at 4pm Friday. At the Rat’s Nest, of course!

The Rat’s Nest is located at 19022 Aurora Ave North, Shoreline, WA 98133.

Seattle’s team faces the Ohio Roller Girls first. The bracketed tournament consists of 12 teams with the championship bout scheduled Sunday.

"This game [against Ohio] will make us or break us," said Seattle's Rat City All-Star skater, Jukesapose. "It's going to take a lot of work to beat Ohio and if we succeed there, then we get to face the no. 1 team in the world - Gotham Girls from New York City."

This the first time since 2008 that Seattle has earned a trip to the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) Division 1 International Championships. It has a chance to bring home what’s called the sport’s “greatest glory,” The Hydra Trophy.

The team’s new Shoreline Rat’s Nest home, located in a former warehouse, houses a flat track and a large front room decked out in decorations for the viewing party.

‘We would really love to get people out this weekend from the Shoreline community to support our All Stars,” said Scarlet Leather aka Jessica Ivey, chief marketing officer.

The community has shown “really overwhelming support” since the team moved its headquarters here this summer, said Lorna Boom, aka Alyssa Hoppe, chief operations office. The organization got its start almost ten years ago in South Seattle’s White Center, aka “Rat City” for a variety of unverifiable reasons.

As the team says: “No matter the origin, it’s a pretty badass name. We love it.”

Rat City Rollergirls raised almost $4,000 via crowdsourcing fundraising, Indiegogo, to help send 20 skaters to the championship. It also plans to host a garage sale this weekend.

Rat City Rollergirls was the first flat-track roller derby team formed in the Northwest and led the resurgence of the fast-paced, blocking, bruising and cruising sport. And it is a sport; no fake pre-planned stunt and excessive grunts in these bouts. Need to learn roller derby rules?

Check this quick lesson. The team consists of about 80 women who train together but compete in four separate home teams: Derby Liberation Front, Grave Danger, Sockit Wenches, and Throttle Rockets. The toughest, most-competitive skaters are chosen for tournament play, hence the Rat City All Stars. Longtime Seattle derby stars Carmen Getsome, Jalapeño Business and Luna Negra are among this year’s All Star team that’s known for defensive strategy, jammer agility and team-wide determination.

This season, the All Stars competed against some of the best teams in the world  -- London, New York and Montreal -- racking up four wins and four loses. The team won their ticket to this weekend’s championship after placing third last month in Division 1 playoffs, defeating Detroit Derby Girls.

The Rat’s Nest. It’s where the action’s at.

(The organization is still looking for volunteers and business sponsors to help spruce up The Rat’s Nest. Bleachers, painting, signs and small construction projects are on the to-do list. Contact them if you can help)

After being thwarted for the past five years, Shoreline’s Rat City Rollergirls All-Star Team will make their triumphant return to the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) Division 1 International Championships on Friday, November 8 in Milwaukee, WI. Rat City will be one of twelve teams competing to bring home The Hydra Award Trophy. They face off against Ohio Rollergirls Friday evening and the rest of the weekend will follow the fate of winners and losers according to the bracket.

"This game [against Ohio] will make us or break us,." said Rat City's All-Star Skater, Jukesapose. "It's going to take a lot of work to beat Ohio and if we succeed there, then we get to face the no. 1 team in the world - Gotham Girls from NYC."

Rat City All Stars captured four wins, and suffered four loses this year against some of the top teams in the world: London, New York and Montreal among others. Seattle's roller derby team won their seat in Championships after placing third last month in Division 1 play offs in Salem, OR after bankrupting.

The All Star team is comprised of the toughest, most-competitive skaters from the league's home teams. Longtime Seattle derby stars Carmen Getsome, Jalapeño Business and Luna Negra team up with new transfers Jukestapose and Sintripetal Force to bring this world powerhouse to the track. Defensive strategy, jammer agility and team-wide determination characterize this year's All Star team.

As promised, Rat City Rollergirls (RCRG) have rolled into Shoreline and they represent our newest ‘professional sports league.’ And I did mean league, as they are not just a team. In this article I will use the term league and team interchangeably to refer to Rat City Rollergirls.

New home town location is 19022 Aurora Ave North where you are invited to attend an opening day event .. $10.00 donation at the door.

Saturday, August 31, 4pm, Chicago vs Portland
Sunday, Sept 1, 1pm Chicago vs Rat City (B Team)

Women’s Flat Track Derby Association is currently composed of 160 leagues and WFTDA is the international governing body. Be assured, this is not your mom or dad’s roller derby of the 1950’s-60’s with the banked track and people being hit off the track and over the rail. This is about women athletes competing in a sport that requires strength, agility, balance, endurance and strategic thinking and planning as well as lots of practice. WFTDA sets the standards and makes the rules of the game as well as setting safety standards. They also say which leagues become members. Right now there are 198 member leagues and 98 leagues in the Apprentice Program.

By reading just the first few sections of Rat City Rollergirls home page “About Us” you will get a good sense of who our new neighbors are.
About Us…
The Rat City Rollergirls (RCRG) is Seattle’s premiere all-female, flat-track roller derby league. RCRG is still composed of about 80 active skaters and many more retired skaters who are still involved. The skaters are divided among four home teams: Derby Liberation Front, Grave Danger, Sockit Wenches, and Throttle Rockets. In addition, a small number of skilled, dedicated skaters are chosen to represent the league on its fifth team, the Rat City Rollergirls All Stars.
Mission Statement: As Seattle’s premier, member-owned roller derby league, it is our mission to maintain a competitive athletic program, promote the sport of roller derby, provide quality sports entertainment for our fans, and make a positive impact in our community.

RCRG got started in April 2004 when a group of friends said, "why not here?" and "let’s do it now!" Shortly after that they formed Rat City Rollergirls, the first flat-track derby league in the Northwest.

They made their first tournament appearance in 2006 in Tuscon, AZ.  Since then this league of accomplished skaters has developed a very loyal fan base. The team has continued to maintain a ranking among the WFTDA in the top 10 best teams. Rat City is currently ranked #12 in the world and holds the #3 seed at the Division One Playoff Tournament to be hosted in Salem, OR in late September.

RCRG will continue to not only advance local derby activities in our community, but will provide coaching for juniors and adults and look for opportunities to participate in local festivities like Bumbershoot in Seattle and Shoreline events too. They have a history of local participation in charities and community outreach through their events and skating bouts.

They are proud to be skating at Key Arena where other great teams have preceded them.  According to Alyssa Hoppe, Chief Operating Officer, in addition to community activities and trainings in the Shoreline location, there will also be team bouts. These will be public events, and yes, seating will be limited due to the constraints of the building.

Ms. Hoppe said on July 17,  “The new Shoreline location is more than twice the size of the current Ballard location and while tickets will be limited compared to Key Arena, they will be available to the public, not just Season Ticket holders and VIPs. Fans will have plenty of opportunities to see all kinds of flat-track roller derby, including world-class All-Star competition.”

RCRG has consistently graduated to larger and larger venues, finally finding a home at Key Arena, home of the Seattle Storm WNBA team and former home to the Seattle Sonics NBA team.

Of course, there's a real rat!

For a guy writing about a group of women who call themselves ‘girls’ in today’s society, I am careful to only refer to them ‘as girls’ in the context of their sport. Everyone is a true athlete and to see this you’ll just have to come to a bout and judge for yourself. For me the most exciting moments have been when the ‘jammer’ skater, the one who can score team points, approaches the pack like a lioness on the hunt and instead of penetrating the lines of the defense with a heavy hand, she simply sidesteps her opponent blockers and slips through the crowd of defenders as they wonder what just happened. The crowd roars with approval and the game goes on. If you like the extraordinary moves in football and basketball, you will love this too. Check their schedule, plan an evening out, have some fun and show up for one of their bouts.

Local Novice Level Skater To Represent Northwest Pacific Region at Pacific Coast Sectional Championships

Monday, October 22, 2012

Ikaika Miyata of Shoreline
Ikaika Miyata of Shoreline will represent the Northwest Pacific Region in the Novice Mens Event at the 2013 Pacific Coast Sectional Figure Skating Championships in Provo, Utah, November 9-13, 2012.

The Pacific Coast Section encompasses three regions, Northwest, Central and Southwest Pacific Regions; Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho, Alaska, Hawaii, Utah, Northern California, Nevada, Wyoming, and Arizona. The top four skaters in each event here will advance to the 2013 U.S. National Championships in Omaha Nebraska, January 20-27, 2013.

Ikaika is a 16 year old Junior at Edmonds Heights K-12. He is a Novice level skater, and has been skating for six and a half years. He became the 2012 Northwest Pacific Regional Intermediate Mens Champion under the coaching of Steve Baker. He is currently coached by Amanda and Karel Kovar. His choreographer is Sharon Jones Baker, 1988 Olympic British Ice Dancer. Ikaika is a member of the Everett Figure Skating Club, and trains at the Olympic View Ice Arena in Mountlake Terrace and Comcast Community Ice Rink in Everett. He volunteer coaches in the Learn To Skate program.

At this higher level of skating, it is common for skaters to move away from home to the larger training centers around the country. Ikaika and his family are committed to keeping him close to his roots in Washington, while seeking options closer to home.

When asked about the upcoming competition, Ikaika said, "I am very proud to have the opportunity represent our Region at this big event. This year has been a rebuilding year for me, I’ve been working really hard at impoving my technique on my jumps and spins and I am really pumped and ready to be able to go to Sectionals and skate against some of the best skaters in the Nation.”

A non-profit, tax-deductible fund has been set up for Ikaika (Kai) Miyata to assist directly with his expenses for this Sectionals Championship competition and/or ongoing training, at the New England Amateur Skating Foundation, P.O Box 6881, Providence RI 02940. Specific instructions for donating in his name can be found at www.ikaikamiyata.com or email. A FundRazr campaign has been created for non-tax deductible donations.
