Good night, Highland

After the last show. Photo by Terry Green

Today was a day full of celebration. All the open skates were full, the last show was a success, the shop was busy, lots of people came all day. We have many more photos to share from the last few days, but I thought it important to say, “Good night, Highland.”

#Highland Ice Arena held its last skate on Saturday, October 15, 2022 with a celebration. Teams performed, people skated - some who hadn't skated for years.

They are getting well-deserved attention from the media. Stories have been published in print and online media and told on radio and TV.

The story that we published on September 5, 2022 End of an Era: Highland Ice Arena closes October 15, 2022 by Jamie Holter, was our top story for three weeks.

Over 100,000 people saw the story and thousands commented, shared, clicked - easily our top story of all time.

The comments were basically all the same, variations of "oh no, a piece of my childhood gone." Then they would forward the story to the people they skated with.

Terry Green and her brother Rick Stephens are the co-owners.

They will continue their business sharpening skates. Rick Stephens will still be selling skates by appointment on Wednesdays and Saturdays for the next few weeks at the Highland location.

The building will be demolished and two apartment buildings built in its place.

Dan Hall, like many, took a recent trip to look at the place he spent so many hours while his daughter played hockey. He shared the photos he took.

End of an Era: Highland Ice Arena closes October 15, 2022

Highland Ice Arena in Shoreline

By Jamie Holter

If you are reading this in the Shoreline Area News, you have probably been to Shoreline’s Highland Ice Arena at least once or, more realistically, maybe 100 times in your lifetime.

The rink was built on a vacant lot on Aurora and named for the area. View looking north.
.
Whether it was skating lessons, fun with friends, school parties, birthday parties, or other family outings, the rink on Aurora has been a part of Shoreline entertainment and community long before Shoreline was a thought. In fact, the area was originally known as Richmond Highlands so that’s how the arena got its name.

Grand Opening 60 years ago

The Highland Ice Arena is closing its doors for good October 15, 2022, after serving the greater Puget Sound community for nearly 60 years to the day.

Terry Green, longtime Skating Director, and daughter of founding owners Dorothy and Jim Stephens, shared pictures and memories of this cherished landmark recently as she prepared to close up.

Postcard with photos from 1962

Her dad grew up in Vancouver, BC and learned to skate early at Vancouver’s Forum. He worked jobs on the ice and found an early passion for curling. He won the National Northwest Jr. Men’s champs twice in 1938 and 1939.

Like most men his age, he planned to join his father’s military regiment, the Canadian Army. But due to an unfortunately timed outbreak of mumps and hives, he was rejected. Frustrated, he pursued a short teaching career and later joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, which proved to be an important decision only discovered later on.

Dorothy Stephens at the start of her career in the Ice Capades

At about the same time, more than half a country away, Dorothy was skating on the frozen ponds of Quebec with three brothers who forced her into service as ice hockey goalkeeper. She was tough and good. So good and so skilled, she tried out for the Ice Capades and secured a spot.

The spot took her on tour throughout the U.S. During a break on that tour, she was at her home ice arena where her future husband was hanging out between his tours. They met. It wasn’t instant. It took a little while to win her heart! They married on the winter solstice, December 21, 1944. Both finished their respective tours and got down to their shared passion – the ice and their trademark motto “Let skating preserve the fitness of youth”.

After teaching in Tacoma and Portland for several years, they had an opportunity to co-lease the Ballard Ice Arena at Shilshole and Dock for a few years. In 1962, they took the leap and opened their own - the Highland Ice Arena was born! [Fun fact: they had the first Zamboni in Washington State!

Jim and Dorothy Stephens at home on the ice

Mom and Dad Stephens taught for years. They worked at and volunteered for every aspect of the ice arena world. They ran their own business. They supported and coached Curling teams. They got the North Seattle Granite Curling Club off the ground. They influenced hundreds, if not thousands of skaters and athletes over the years.

Terry, their daughter and 40+ year Skating Director, says growing up in her family was the best life. The entire skating community is very close. They shared stories of falling asleep in the music room on New Year's Eve because they kept the ice arena open until 12:15am to ring in the new year with everyone.

She says that still today, she can go to any competition anywhere in the U.S. and meet someone who skated at the Highland Ice Arena. Back then, skating instructors brought their kids to work and now she sees those kids with their own kids, putting on their own make-up for their own competition. Generations and generations of happiness and preserving the fitness of youth.

The Stephens family 1955

But like many things, it’s time to close. Dorothy and Jim both passed within months of each other recently at ages 99 and 100 respectively and left quite a legacy.

Terry’s husband, Gary, her brother, Rick and his wife Diana Stephens are currently running the rink. The sale has been pending since January 2021. Rick and Diana will continue to run a skate shop and handle boot fittings, sharpening and repairs at a location yet to be determined.

Valkyria Mansfield, 4th generation family skater and the youngest of the great grandkids

Surviving family members say it’s tough to run a business, let alone get up and down into the Zamboni these days. So they decided to sell.

The deal closes October 6, 2022 and Terry invited the community to one last skating exhibition on October 15, 2022

Many, many thanks to the family for sharing their passion and this jewel with our community for so long.

Expect big hits and quick jukes at Rat City Roller Derby’s Season 16 home opener Saturday at Edmonds Community College, 20000 68th Ave W, Lynnwood 98036

Spectators can enjoy two full-length bouts featuring RCRD home teams. First, Derby Liberation Front will take on the Sockit Wenches, starting at 4:45 p.m. The second bout will pit the Throttle Rockets against Grave Danger. There will be a mix of new faces and returning favorites on the track.

Rat City Roller Derby president Anne Smashaway said the league is excited to kick off its home team season. “Even though we don’t have a home right now, we are still here playing rain or shine,” she said.

The former Rat’s Nest building in Shoreline was sold last spring to a developer with plans to build more than 240 units of housing. RCRD has been looking for a new permanent location, but has specific track dimensions that require a larger facility, about the size of a warehouse.

In the interim, RCRD has been partnering with Seattle Parks and Recreation for space rentals. For space leads, please contact Scarlet Fever, Business Operations Manager, at bizops@ratcityrollerderby.com.

Schedule:
  • Jan. 11 — Home Team Season Opener, doors open at 4pm, first bout starts at 4:45pm, Edmonds Community College, 20000 68th Ave W, Lynnwood
  • Feb. 8 — Rat City Roots (Home Team Mashup), doors open at 6pm, bout starts at 6:45pm, Southgate Roller Rink, 9646 17th SW, Seattle
  • March 14 — Home Team Game 2, doors open at 4pm, first bout starts at 4:45pm, Edmonds Community College, 20000 68th Ave W, Lynnwood
  • April 11 — Home Team Game 3, doors open at 4pm, first bout starts at 4:45pm, Edmonds Community College, 20000 68th Ave W, Lynnwood
  • May 30 — Home Team Season Champs, doors open at 4pm, first bout starts at 4:45pm, Edmonds Community College, 20000 68th Ave W, Lynnwood

Tickets can be purchased online at brownpapertickets.com or ratcityrollerderby.com

Rat City Roller Derby (RCRD) is Seattle’s premier flat-track roller derby league. RCRD was formed in 2004 and has grown into a league of ~120 active members, with hundreds more retired skaters. We train skaters 18+ from beginner level, all the way through our All Stars team, which is ranked 16th internationally out of 450 teams in WFTDA (Women’s Flat Track Derby Association.)

We have four home teams – Derby Liberation Front, Grave Danger, Sockit Wenches, and Throttle Rockets – as well as a development team, the Mischief.

More access to Roller Derby coming to Seattle Parks and Rec Community Centers
By Rachel Schulkin

After the closure of other roller derby facilities in King County, Seattle Parks and Recreation heard from several roller derby teams and programs that were seeking space to hold games and practices.

After reviewing the various sizes of our gyms, gathering input from the roller derby community, we are proposing the painting of permanent roller derby lines at up to 17 sites across Seattle Parks and Recreation Community Centers over the next two years as floors are refinished on our typical cycle.

Furthermore, we are allowing the use of tape to continue at Magnuson Park Community Center until permanent lines can be painted on the gym floor after the remodel of the Community Center which is planned to commence in the later part of 2020.

Thanks to all those who reached out to us, and for your patience as we figured out a way to make it work!

Magnuson Park Community Center, 7110 62nd Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98115

Comment from the Rat City Roller Girls: "This is huge for our sport! Thank you Seattle and thank you to everyone in the community who worked to make this happen."

The Rat City Roller Girls previously leased space in Shoreline, in an old mattress warehouse which is slated for demolition.

Rat City Roller Derby packs up and leaves Shoreline

Sunday, May 26, 2019

"We're moving everything out of the Rat's Nest - strong skaters = strong movers!"
Photo courtesy Rat City Roller Derby

By Diane Hettrick

The Rat City Roller Derby packed up their goods and moved out of the Rat's Nest on Aurora at 19022 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline.

The building was the former Sleep Aire Mattress Factory, owned by the Pearson family. It was built in 1966 and operated there for over 25 years. It was closed as a business and sat empty for years. Aurora Rents used it as a temporary location while their new building was being constructed at 175th and Aurora.

Rat City Roller Derby has moved out of The Rat's Nest
Google

Rat City moved in at the beginning of 2014 and used it as a practice site and for small, local matches. Their big matches were held at Key Arena and brought in 6000 fans.

They also rented it to another roller group - the Jet City Roller Derby out of Everett.

The Pearson family eventually put the property up for sale and it was purchased in 2016 by a local developer and his partners as a site for an apartment building. The same partnership group built the Malmo apartments and the Paceline apartments - both on or near Aurora.

Rat City was notified that the building would be demolished.

In three years of looking, they have been unable to find a new space.

The issues are space, columns, location, and money. There are many warehouses but they all have columns. Columns are not compatible with a skating track and bleachers. A flat roller derby track requires 8,100 SF (75' wide x 108' long).

As for location, they need something on a main road in Seattle. And money? If they had money to buy land, they wouldn't have to worry about it being sold out from underneath them.

At one point the Roller Derby thought they had found a space in SODO, but that did not work out. The new owners of the Aurora property helped them look, but without success.

Rat City's lease ended October of 2018. Owners extended it through April and then granted them a little more time.

They had a moving sale on May 4, 2019, and then moved everything out on May 19, just after finishing a full day event called the Summer Slam.

They have been able to find a practice space in West Seattle for the summer only.

"There will be bruises"

Nicole Brodeur, in her column on Rat City, chided the area's millionaires.

"Any one of the region’s countless millionaires or foundations could write these people a check and solve this problem. They need, what, $500,000 for a hunk of land big enough to pour a track, surround it with a fabric building with steel girders and a retaining wall. Electricity and plumbing. Parking. All right, let’s say $1 million. That’s a latte for you fine, rich folks."

Both Brodeur and Nathalie Graham in her feature in The Stranger lamented the loss of the junior teams and the opportunities for young girls to play competitive sports.

Inaugural Girls' Hockey League begins

Monday, October 2, 2017

The first-ever girls' hockey league in Washington State, the Western Washington Female Hockey League (WWFHL), started last weekend at Highland Ice Arena with a resounding success.

Players from the Western Washington Female Hockey Association (WWFHA) at the 8U, 10U and 12U/14U age brackets took the ice with pride in their new league jerseys bearing the Washington Wild team's crest, league emblem, and the association's 15th anniversary patch on their sleeves.

Games were tight, fast paced, and competitive, with several ending in tie games. Most importantly, Highland Ice Arena was invaded by smiling female hockey players from the early morning to the early afternoon, happy to play the game they love. The inaugural girls' hockey league spans from October through March.

The Western Washington Female Hockey Association is the only girls' hockey association in the state and its mission is to empower girls through the sport of ice hockey so that they may reach their goals and dreams on and off the ice.

A new Learn To Play class is scheduled to start this Sunday, October 8th at Highland Ice Arena and spots are still available; equipment may be rented. More information here
