Significant improvements for the Briarcrest Elementary building planned for the next school year

Friday, December 16, 2022

Briarcrest Elementary photo courtesy Shoreline Schools

Briarcrest Elementary School will have significant improvements made to the building next school year, thanks to a voter-approved bond that is funding a new HVAC system and more upgrades for the building.

Briarcrest is located in the southeast area of the school district at 2715 NE 158th St, Shoreline, WA 98155.

To accommodate this work, Briarcrest will temporarily relocate to the North City School site for the 2023-24 school year. All Briarcrest teachers, staff, students, instruction, programs, and services will be part of this temporary relocation to North City.

The main improvement driving this work is replacing the Briarcrest’s HVAC system. The heating and cooling at Briarcrest has been inefficient and, at times, quite ineffective. The current system is failing, and due to its age, we are unable to source parts or service to maintain it any longer, so it must be replaced in its entirety.

While the HVAC system is replaced, this presents an opportunity for improvements to many other building systems, including all lighting, fire sprinklers, fire alarm panel, and the security system.

We are hopeful that budget and timing will also allow for additional improvements to restrooms and the Briarcrest playground and/or playfield. The improvements to Briarcrest will result in a safer and significantly more efficient building, which improves learning conditions for all students and eliminates the building’s reliance on fossil fuels.

Echo Lake Elementary School has its very own book vending machine

Thursday, December 15, 2022

Photo courtesy Echo Lake Elementary PTA
And it is exactly what it sounds like: a typical vending machine for snacks, but one that has been specially repurposed for books.

This is tied into the school's Eagle of the Week program where students earn a special gold bookworm coin for being safe, respectful, responsible, and kind.

Students redeem the coin for a book of their choice. The machine is stocked with books in both English and Spanish that highlight equity, inclusion, and social justice so that students can see themselves and learn about others in the books that they read.

Fourth-grade teacher Shari Wennik says, "We're super excited to give students the opportunity to earn books while also promoting kindness.
"We want this to be one of their special memories from Echo Lake Elementary, where students discovered or continued their love of reading."

Special thanks to Nvidia’s matching donation program that helped purchase the machine, and to the Echo Lake PTA and Washington State School Retirees’ Association for grants to help purchase books.

Do not be alarmed to see first responders at your local school in 2023

Tuesday, December 13, 2022

Maintaining safe and secure schools with ideal conditions for all students to learn and grow is a top priority for Shoreline Schools.

To help us keep students, staff, and school visitors safe and cared for when at our sites, we are partnering with the cities of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, Shoreline Fire, Lake Forest Park Police, and Shoreline Police to conduct safety and security assessments of our buildings.

With several new and remodeled buildings in our district and after the COVID-related disruptions to schooling over the last few years, now is an important time for our first responders to conduct safety and security assessments of our buildings.

These school visits will take place over the next few months outside of the school day, typically on weekends or school breaks when there are not large-scale activities taking place.

You may see first responder vehicles at a school building while we hold these visits.

Understanding that police presence at schools any day of the week can be alarming to members of our community, we wanted to let you know that these visits will be taking place.

We anticipate the visits will occur between the dates of December 19 and February 26.

We appreciate the support of and continued partnership with local law enforcement and emergency responders to help us keep our school community as safe and secure as possible.

Student, staff, family, and community partnership is also critical in maintaining safe learning spaces for all; if you have a safety concern, you may quickly, easily, and anonymously report it via this anonymous safety tip line.

If you have questions or concerns about the planned school safety and security assessments described above, please contact public.info@ssd412.org

Two Shorewood High School seniors are Semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Vivek Malik and Raghav Dhandi are two academically talented students whose scores on the 2021 PSAT qualified them for the nationwide pool of National Merit Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors.

The students now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,250 National Merit Scholarships which will be offered next spring.

Shoreline Schools awarded Farm to School grant

The Washington State Department of Agriculture has awarded Shoreline School District a $83,838 Farm to School Purchasing Grant for use during the 2022-23 school year.

Shoreline is one of 83 recipients selected across the state to receive this funding, which can be used to purchase fresh produce, grains, and protein from participating producers and to fund equipment and additional labor that may be needed to prepare the food items.

The Shoreline Schools Food and Nutrition Services department has identified more than 20 local farms to purchase food from through the Puget Sound Food Hub

The Puget Sound Food Hub represents many farmers from historically underrepresented communities and upholds the “Good Food Principles” of environmental sustainability, valued workforce, health and nutrition, and animal welfare.

“Our participation with the Puget Sound Food Hub allows Shoreline schools to bring seasonal, sustainably sourced food of high quality directly to the plates of our K-12 students,” says Jessica Jandayan, Director of Food Services and Nutrition.
“With these offerings, we hope to enhance student nutrition, introduce students to unfamiliar foods that they may enjoy, and increase awareness of the importance of sustainable agriculture in our school community.”

Student voice was central in the department’s decision to apply for the Farm to School Purchasing Grant.

Most notably, 200 students at Meridian Park Elementary School signed a petition to add more vegan entrees to their menu, and a student coalition from Kellogg Middle School expressed interest in adding more meatless days to help reduce the environmental impact of school meals.

Planned student focus groups will help develop new recipes made with local ingredients and help the Food and Nutrition Services Department be responsive to the evolving needs of students from cultural backgrounds that restrict meat and those with plant-based diets.

“What a wonderful opportunity this Farm to Schools grant offers us to connect our students to the farmers and producers of the food that we all enjoy. Having grown up in the eastern part of the state to parents who were migrant farm workers, this program has a special place in my heart,” shares Superintendent Susana Reyes.
“Kudos to our Food and Nutrition Services staff for qualifying for this grant and for working diligently to make health, wellness, and nutrition education a part of daily life in Shoreline Schools.”

Tart apples from a Food Hub farm
School meals this year have already included local nectarines and sungold tomatoes, and plans are in place to feature pears and honey crisp apples at all K-12 schools’ salad bars this fall.

The district’s first “Farm to School Feast Day” is planned for November 8 at all K-12 schools.

Lunch that day will feature a locally sourced chicken drumstick that will be prepared and roasted in-house by the school district and a dinner roll made from scratch with local flour.

Throughout the current school year, students can expect to enjoy weekly fresh fruits and vegetables and quarterly Feast Days, courtesy of the Farm to School Purchasing Grant and the Shoreline Schools Food and Nutrition Services team.

Since 2013, Nancy has served as Assistant Principal at Shorewood High School, where she was previously Dean of Students.

Prior to her time with Shorewood, Nancy worked locally in education as a substitute PE and health teacher at Einstein Middle School and as Dean of Students and Assistant Principal with Edmonds School District.

Shoreline Schools awarded $247,500 in grant funding for solar panel installations

Sunday, September 25, 2022

Solar panels on Briarcrest Elementary Schools

The Washington State Department of Commerce has awarded Shoreline School District three grants of $82,500 each to fund solar panel installation projects at Syre Elementary, Shorecrest High School, and Shorewood High School.

Projects selected to receive this funding support community efforts to move toward sustainable energy sources and result in long-term energy cost savings that can be reallocated to other needs. Shoreline School District’s total of $247,500 in grant funding is the highest of all government agencies who were awarded this funding.

Aldercrest (Cascade K-8 and Home Education Exchange) solar panels

A 2010 voter-approved bond has funded the construction of Shorecrest and Shorewood high schools, and a 2006 voter-approved bond funded a roof replacement at Syre Elementary.

These past projects allowed the district to apply for and take advantage of this grant opportunity, and funds from the 2006 bond will contribute to the solar project costs. To have solar panels installed, buildings must have electrical systems and roofs that can accommodate the panels and the system.

“I appreciate and am so proud of our Capital Projects department’s foresight to prepare our buildings for sustainable energy and their work in applying for these state grants. We are excited to have been selected for these grants!” said Superintendent Susana Reyes.
“The past bonds that were approved by Shoreline and Lake Forest Park voters continue to benefit our schools, and we are deeply grateful for this support from our community.“

Edwin Pratt Early Learning Center has solar panels

The three schools planned to receive solar panels will join Edwin Pratt Early Learning Center, Einstein Middle School, Kellogg Middle School, Parkwood Elementary School, Briarcrest Elementary School, and Aldercrest (Cascade K-8 and the Home Education Exchange) as Shoreline schools that have solar panels installed.

While the grant funding does not cover the entire cost of these solar panel installation projects, it does help reduce the district’s expenditure significantly.

The district is in the process of reviewing proposals and designs for the three systems, with construction planned to begin in the summer of 2023, or possibly sooner.

School buses at the Transportation department

The first day of school for students in grades 1-12 is Wednesday, September 7, 2022 (this is a full school day, not early release).

The first day of school for kindergarten and preschool students is Monday, September 12. You can find these and other important dates on Shoreline Schools website calendar.

School start and end times, including those for early release and half days, are available on the district bell times webpage.

Drivers should be particularly aware of students walking to schools and bus stops. We still have bus stops with little room for children to stand between the road and our many drainage ditches.

Slow down when you see children and never pass a school bus with its flag out!
