Important Information about School Meals

As the school year approaches, the Shoreline Schools nutrition department is sharing information about school meals, including:
  • Free and reduced meal applications
  • How to load money onto your child’s account
  • The basics of meals at school
  • A new school menu system for this year
  • Meal charge procedures
  • How to contribute to the district’s “Angel Fund”
  • Our wellness policy
  • Allergy accommodation information
Eating school meals will be a lot like it was before COVID and remote learning, but there are a few changes.

Here are the most important points for the 2022-23 school year.

School Meal Purchasing Options

The USDA school meal waiver that provided free meals for all students last year expired and was not extended by Congress, so we will return to pre-pandemic operations for the 2022-2023 school year.

There are two options for your child to eat meals at school:

Free Meals
Paid Meals
Need help paying for school meals?
Buying school meals or a la carte items?
Fill out a Free and Reduced Meal application.
Load your student's account.
  • If you qualify, breakfast and lunch are 100% free (no more copays for reduced-price meals)
  • A la carte items must still be purchased with cash in hand or on account (these are snacks and extra food items sold separately from the full school meal)

  • Breakfast costs $2.00-$2.50 (varies by grade)
  • Lunch costs $3.65-$4.15 (varies by grade)
  • Families will get account low and negative balance notifications
  • Account balances must be positive to purchase a la carte items

Applications available in English, Spanish, Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Tagalog, Tigrinya, and Vietnamese on our website.

You can learn more about meal accounts and ways to pay on our website.

  • About School Meals
  • Lunch is made up of 5 basic food components: milk, meat or meat alternate, vegetable, fruit, and grain.
  • Breakfast is made up of 4 food items: milk, fruit/vegetable, 2 grains (or 1 grain and 1 meat/meat alternate).
  • Many of our foods are made from scratch using the best ingredients, including low-fat proteins, whole grain pastas, fresh fruits and vegetables, locally sourced breads, and hormone-free milk.

Meal Charge Procedures

The goal of the school meal program is to provide nutritious meals to students during the school day.

Students may receive breakfast and lunch at no cost to them if they are categorically eligible for free meals or if they qualify for free meals based on federal poverty guidelines.

Sometimes, however, children who do not qualify based on these standards would like a breakfast or lunch but do not have money in their account or in-hand to cover the cost of the meal at the time of the meal service.

The intent of the District Meal Charge Procedures is to ensure responsible financial management of the non-profit food services budget as well as a consistent and transparent student-oriented practice at each school for the responsible financial management of student meal accounts.

Wellness Policy

Children who are healthy, physically fit, and eat well-balanced meals are more likely to learn in the classroom. The district’s Wellness Policy supports increased emphasis on nutrition, as well as physical activity, at all grade levels to enhance the well-being of our district’s youth.

Some key components of our Wellness Policy are:
  • Providing students access to and encouraging consumption of nutrient-dense food
  • Discouraging the use of food as reward
  • Providing opportunities for physical activity and developmentally appropriate exercise
  • Providing and promoting accurate, evidence-based information related to health, nutrition, and physical education
For more information about the Wellness Policy, including guidance for snacks at school and other FAQ, please visit our Nutrition and Wellness page.

Allergy Accommodation Information

We are sensitive to the various nutritional needs of our students. If your student has an allergy to any food, please contact your school nurse as soon as possible. The top 8 allergens (soy, wheat, milk, peanut, treenut, egg, fish and shellfish) are flagged on breakfast and lunch menus.

While there are many more ingredients that can cause allergic reactions, the top 8 are the only allergens required on nutrition labels.

For more information about allergens, special diets, and our procedures, please visit our Allergies and Special Diets page.

The Food and Nutrition Services section of our website is robust and maintained regularly, and it contains a wealth of information that may answer other questions you have.

If you have any additional questions, contact Jessica Jandayan, RDN, CD, SNS, Director of Food and Nutrition Services, Shoreline Public Schools, nutrition.services@ssd412.org

Thursday, August 11, 2022

Shoreline School District Substitutes
Multiple positions

We are looking forward to a great year and are excitedly preparing for the arrival of all our students in just a few short weeks!

One of our goals this year is to have ready and available substitute employees to make sure our schools run smoothly every day. If you have ever considered volunteering or pitching in at a school, here is an opportunity to help out AND get paid for it!

Last year there was a big need for substitute paraeducators, office staff, food service staff, and bus drivers in particular, and unfortunately we came up short getting these filled. These vacancies can disrupt our learning environment, so we are inviting you to either inquire about these opportunities or help us spread the word.

As a substitute, you can choose what days you work and make a big contribution to our school district community. If you want to consider this, it would be greatly appreciated.

You can see available substitute positions, required qualifications, and application details within our FastTrack employment system. Look for the job listings "Certificated Substitute" and "Classified Substitute" to get started.

If you are interested in bus driver, custodian, or food service substitute positions, they have their own listings within FastTrack to apply.

Discovery Forest artwork and photo by Sumi Wu

Parkwood Elementary is home to "Discovery Forest" by artist Sumi Wu, in partnership with the Washington State Arts Commission

"Discovery Forest" asks you to see how individual, small elements contribute to the larger overall imagery of the artwork. The artwork is made of seven, six-sided, painted steel columns with small cut out shapes throughout.

As you walk around the balcony level at the school, the columns create different scenes. Small-scale images of nature native to the Pacific Northwest add up to form the larger imagery.

You can learn more about the piece and Sumi Wu, including a time-lapse video of the installation here:
https://www.arts.wa.gov/my-public-art-portal/

Committee members who brought this art to Parkwood were:
  • Solie Calhoun, Parkwood Student
  • Tainia Tuilevuka, Parkwood Student
  • Christian Mason, Parkwood Parent
  • Laura King, Shoreline School District Art TOSA
  • Taylor Seda, Parkwood Multi-lingual Learner Teacher

Roots of Empathy in Shoreline Schools

Friday, July 8, 2022

Have you been wondering how you can give back to the Shoreline community? Have you ever considered becoming a Roots of Empathy Instructor?

Several Shoreline elementary schools are in need of volunteers who are willing to train as Roots of Empathy Instructors for the upcoming school year.

Applications are currently being accepted and training dates are scheduled for October 18-20, 2022.

What is Roots of Empathy?

Roots of Empathy is an evidence-based classroom program that fosters empathy in children, now entering its 16th year of partnership with elementary schools in the Shoreline and Lake Forest Park area.

Empathy enables children to build healthy relationships, reduces bullying and aggression, and contributes to their well-being. We are in need of a few more people who are willing to give time to children and watch them evolve over the school year as they observe “their” baby grow.

Want to see what Roots of Empathy looks like?

Click to view a recent BBC World Hacks feature on the Roots of Empathy program that explains how Roots of Empathy works and why a baby is such a powerful teacher of empathy.

You can also take a peek at this Q13 segment that was filmed in a Meridian Park Elementary class in 2020.

Finally, learn more about what being an Instructor means here.

Please reach out to Suz Fix, local Program Manager, at sfix@rootsofempathy.org if you’re interested in joining Roots of Empathy in changing the world, child by child.

Shoreline K-5 Schools open to Out-of-District students

Saturday, June 11, 2022

Parkwood Elementary School photo courtesy Shoreline Schools

Starting this coming 2022-23 school year, Shoreline School District elementary schools will be open to transfer requests from out-of-district students.

In recent years, our K-5 schools have been closed to Choice Transfer Requests from students who live outside the district boundaries, but a recent decline in enrollment and projected decreasing numbers means we have room in the coming school year.

If a family that lives outside of the Shoreline Schools boundary would like to be considered, the first step is to visit this state portal and complete a Choice Transfer Request for their child.

Each building will consider the transfer request based on factors such as space in the school/grade and a student's attendance history (see Board Policy 3141P for a full list). Choice Transfer Requests are submitted and considered annually. Once notified of acceptance, the family may then complete the standard enrollment process for their child.

There is no change to the policy that Choice Transfer Requests are still considered for middle and high schools.

The Head Start and Early Childhood Education (Special Education) programs run by Edwin Pratt Early Learning Center are still closed to out-of-district students.
