Health and safety in Shoreline schools - COVID-19 School Safety Guide - remote learning not offered by district

Monday, September 13, 2021

Interested in learning more about the COVID-19 health and safety protocols used in our schools?

You can find the complete 34 page COVID-19 School Safety Guide here. The guide is also posted in the “Return to School Information” section of the schools website. It is listed in the page directory on the left side of the page.

The guide contains detailed information on the health and safety protocols used in all areas of school and district operations.

Due to staffing and financial considerations, Shoreline Schools will not offer its own remote learning program, but any Shoreline student in grades K-8 is eligible to register for the Home Education Exchange, and any student in grades K-12 can register for a remote learning program run by other school districts or entities approved by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

You can find a list of approved online learning programs here or in the school website page directory. For questions relating to searching for online programs, please contact public.info@shorelineschools.org or 206-393-4412.

The flashers and school zone cameras in Lake Forest Park will be active and enforceable beginning September 1, 2021.

Hello Shoreline Schools Families and Staff,

As your new Superintendent of Shoreline Public Schools, it is my honor and pleasure to welcome you to the 2021-2022 school year! On behalf of all of our staff and the Shoreline School Board, we are so excited to see all of our students back for full-time, in-person learning this year, and we can’t wait to see them!

Although we continue to face challenges due to the impacts of the pandemic, I assure you that we are committed to providing the best educational experience for all of our students. Our administrators and staff have been and continue to be hard at work to ensure we have a great start to the school year in just a couple of weeks. You can learn more about your school’s back-to-school information by visiting the school website or contacting the principal.

While we are not currently hosting any large indoor public events, I look forward to meeting many of you throughout the course of the school year. In July, I presented my Superintendent Entry Plan to our school board. You can view the entry plan here. In the coming weeks and months, I will be meeting with many groups of families, staff, students, and community members to listen and learn about the strengths and needs of our schools and district. I look forward to learning, working and leading alongside our Shoreline Schools community to support the highest levels of success for each and every student who walks through our doors.

In the meantime, you can also learn more about me and my path to Shoreline in this article from our summer newsletter.

I understand that there are concerns about returning to full-time, in-person learning due to the COVID-19 Delta variant and a rise in cases nationally and statewide. Full-time, in-person learning is required by the state, and we will continue to follow all current and updated health and safety protocols recommended by public health officials to keep our students, staff and schools as healthy as possible. You can learn more about some of these practices and a link to frequently asked questions on the topic further down in the email. We will also continue to monitor infection rates in our local area and partner with our public health organizations to ensure we are taking all of the proper steps and precautions.

I am so grateful for your continued partnership and support as we embark on a new school year. We know that the pandemic has been and continues to be impactful, not the least being how differently we have “to do” school. Nonetheless, each day offers promise and fresh opportunities, and I feel hopeful and inspired by our staff, our students, and our community. I firmly believe that together through a spirit of understanding, cooperation, care, and friendship, we can and will get through this. I am honored to be on this path with you in service to our children and young people. Thank you so very much, and please feel free to reach out to me anytime at susana.reyes@shorelineschools.org.

Sincerely,
Dr. Susana Reyes
Superintendent

Parkwood Elementary highlighted in statewide study for improving outcomes for Black students

Thursday, June 10, 2021

Parkwood Elementary is one of 38 schools in Washington highlighted as an outlier for supporting positive outcomes for Black students in a recent study from the Center for Educational Effectiveness (CEE) with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The study “Characteristics of Positive Outlier Schools: Illuminating the Strengths of American Indian/Alaska Native, Black, Latino/a, and Students Experiencing Poverty” measured systemic performance and improvement in several areas for over 2,100 schools.

The areas measured include: attendance, English language arts proficiency (ELA), math proficiency and other performance and improvement metrics.

Using student-level academic and engagement data from 2014 through 2019, this study identified schools in Washington that have successfully removed barriers and created the conditions that amplified the existing strengths of Black, Latino/a, American Indian/Alaska Native, and students experiencing poverty.

Parkwood was highlighted for improving ELA and math proficiency, as well as attendance, for Black students.

“This is an incredible honor and the direct result of our community’s commitment to the success and well-being of every child at Parkwood,” said Parkwood Principal Ann Torres in response to the news.
“Our school community’s deep commitment to engagement, partnership, and collaboration is what’s allowing us to better serve and support students of color and students experiencing poverty. Together, we are working hard to make sure that race and socioeconomic status are not predictors of success.”

Torres was quick to note her staff’s commitment to supporting the success and well-being of every child for the improved academic and social outcomes they’re seeing.

“Our staff is incredibly hard working and hold themselves to unbelievably high standards. We never, ever give up on a child,” said Torres. “Our greatest hope is that every Parkwood Panther is confident in their knowledge, skills and lifelong potential.”

Superintendent Rebecca Miner agrees.

“I am incredibly proud of Parkwood and their collective work to ensure authentic educational equity for all students,” said Miner. “We’ve seen this in our own data over the years and we’re delighted to see the educational research community highlight the positive outcomes we’re seeing.”

Echo Lake Elementary field construction underway

Friday, June 4, 2021

Echo Lake Elementary field construction photo by Steven H. Robinson

Echo Lake Elementary field construction began mid April 2021 with the demolition of the previous field.

The field has been plagued with drainage issues which often made many parts of it unusable. The school district hired an architect and contractor to solve the drainage issues and decided to enlarge the playing area at the same time.

At this point, the new stormwater detention system excavation and installation is complete.

The sod has been excavated at the west end of the field. The subgrade is established and approved by the architect.

The lateral drainage installation and permeable gravel base course are in progress.

The whole field will be resurfaced with artificial turf with a cork infill.

June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month in Shoreline Schools

Pride flags fly at all Shoreline Schools this month

In recognition of LGBTQ+ Pride Month beginning on June 1, we want to take a moment to express our school district’s appreciation and support of our LGBTQ+ students, staff, community members and allies. We see you and we stand with you.

LGBTQ+ Pride Month is celebrated each June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City, an uprising to resist the police harassment and persecution to which the LGBTQ+ community was commonly subjected. This marked the beginning of a movement to outlaw discriminatory laws and practices against people who identify as LGBTQ+.

While our nation has made progress in that path to equality, we recognize there is much more work to do to achieve equality for our LGBTQ+ community.

On Tuesday, we proudly raised Pride Flags at each of our schools and district office. We invite you to join us this month in reaffirming our support for our LGBTQ+ students, families and community and recognizing their vast contributions to society.

They were nominated by Shoreline Schools Superintendent Rebecca Miner, who also delivered the award plaques to the recipients in person this week.
“Since our schools were forced to close on March 12, 2020, the City of Shoreline, City of Lake Forest Park and the Dale Turner Family YMCA engaged in offering a system of support and child care for families and students in our district,” said Superintendent Miner.

Recognizing that child care was the most immediate and pressing need many families were faced with, the three organizations quickly mobilized their resources and staffing to begin offering child care and remote learning camps, and offering scholarships and funding so that those programs would be offered for free to families in of that support.

“We are incredibly grateful for the outstanding efforts of the Cities and YMCA during this very challenging year,” said Superintendent Miner.

Case updates May 20, 2021 - Masks are still required on Shoreline Public Schools campuses

Pfizer as well as Moderna are available at the Shoreline Fire vaccination clinic at the Shoreline Center auditorium
18650 1st Ave NE, north end of buildings, for 12 years old and older. Info here

You can make appointments, but it's not required. They would appreciate it if walk-ins could arrive before 5pm.

While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that people who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 do not need to wear a mask in many outdoor and indoor settings, the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) still requires that they be worn by EVERYONE while on school campuses and buses.

The CDC recommendation does not supersede the DOH’s requirement for Washington schools. If your child attends in-person hybrid learning in Shoreline Public Schools, please ensure that they continue to come to school with their mask each day.
