Councilmember Dembowski delivers van to the Shoreline Lake Forest Park Senior Center, surprises Center with $20,000 grant

On Wednesday, July 15, 2021 King County Councilmember Rod Dembowski delivered a “retired County vanpool” 7-passenger Dodge Caravan to the Shoreline Lake Forest Park Senior Center on 185th in Shoreline

He also surprised the Senior Center with a $20,000 grant from King County.

“Over the course of the pandemic I have had the opportunity to work closely with the tireless leadership and dedicated volunteers at the Shoreline Lake Forest Park Senior Center,” Councilmember Rod Dembowski said.
“They continue to provide essential services, such as protecting vulnerable seniors from COVID-19, feeding those in need, and vaccinating the public.
"Their work inspires me and countless others in the community. I am honored to help advance their work by securing this grant, and delivering their new van.”

King County Metro retired the 2013 van earlier this year. Metro retires vehicles in its vanpool fleet after they reach the end of their service life – typically after six years. When the vans reach this age, they are considered surplus and donated by the King County Council to local nonprofits.

The County’s Youth and Amateur Sports Grants Council District funds made the grant Dembowski secured possible.

The $20,000 “get active” grant money can be used for their senior activities, e.g. their yoga, tai chi, Hula and similar activity programs.

Tagger(s) targeting the Senior Center and churches on 185th

Tuesday, May 25, 2021

Access vans, with volunteer drivers, take seniors to medical appointments*

Over the weekend, someone spray painted vulgar cartoons and homophobic and racial slurs on six HYDE Shuttle transportation vans at the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Senior Center.

They also tagged the Shoreline Covenant Church at 185th and Ashworth with a religious jibe. And the Shoreline Community Church across the street from the Senior Center.

The tagging seems aimed at upsetting as many people as possible, rather than a targeted attack.

The Senior Center and possibly other locations have been hit three times. Last weekend the large banner on the outside of the building was slashed. Last month someone threw rocks through the SC window and the French school in the building next to the SC.

The HYDE Shuttle vans are used to transport the Senior Center's most aged seniors to medical appointments, dialysis and cancer treatments, grocery shopping and a host of other critical transportation needs.

They have not only the expense of repainting over the spray paint but the delay in services for the seniors.

They ask that should you be walking by, especially after dark, please call the police if you see anyone around our facility or vehicles.

What is amusing to some immature individuals is very costly to a non-profit that continues to service our community.

If you have information email it to shorelinesc@soundgenerations.org or call 206-365-1536.

*We no longer post photos of graffiti because we don't want to give the vandals the publicity. Ed.

Public Health denies request for a fixed vaccination site and vaccine supply in Shoreline

Thursday, March 25, 2021

the Shoreline Fire department's daily rounds.

Public Health – Seattle and King County has denied Shoreline Fire District’s request to provide vaccine for a fixed vaccination site in Shoreline. (see previous story)

Shoreline Fire District, Shoreline-Lake Forest Senior Center, and the Shoreline School District have been working together to establish a fixed vaccination site at the Senior Center.

Once fully operational, such a site has the potential of administering up to 1,000 vaccinations a day.

They made a request to Public Health for approval and guarantee of a supply of vaccine so they can move forward. While Public Health supports the efforts to establish a fixed vaccination site, they denied the request to supply the vaccine.

Shoreline Fire District will continue to seek partners who will provide vaccine to a fixed vaccination site in Shoreline.

Currently, there are no large, fixed vaccination sites in all North King County. As the supply of vaccine grows, having large, fixed vaccination sites will play a critical role in getting as many people vaccinated as quickly as possible.

Shoreline Fire District has been operating a mobile vaccination unit in Shoreline, vaccinating some of our most vulnerable residents living in adult family homes. At the end of each day, the Fire Department has delivered its surplus supply of vaccine to the Senior Center where a wait list of seniors ready to receive their dose awaits.

They are ready to move this partnership to the next level and set-up a fixed vaccination site if they can find a partner to supply the vaccine.

The City of Shoreline supports these efforts and will do what it can to help make it successful.

The Shoreline Fire Department, Shoreline-Lake Forest Senior Center, and the Shoreline School District are partnering to establish a fixed vaccination site at the Senior Center.

Once fully operational, it could administer 1,000 vaccinations a day. They are looking to Public Health – Seattle and King County to give approval and guarantee a supply of vaccine so they can move forward.

Shoreline Mayor Will Hall and King County Councilmember Rod Dembowski have joined our community partners in requesting Public Health’s quick approval.

Currently, there are no large, fixed vaccination sites in all North King County. As the supply of vaccine grows, having large, fixed vaccination sites will play a critical role in getting as many people vaccinated as quickly as possible.

For the past few weeks, the Shoreline Fire Department has been operating a mobile vaccination unit in Shoreline, vaccinating some of our most vulnerable residents living in adult family homes.

At the end of each day, the Fire Department has delivered its surplus supply of vaccine to the Senior Center where a wait list of seniors ready to receive their dose awaits. They are ready to move this partnership to the next level and set-up a fixed vaccination site.

The City supports these efforts and will do what it can to help make it successful.
