A sold out evening at Shorewood High School for the Pop-Up Drive-In

Tuesday, June 23, 2020

Story and photos from Shoreline LFP Arts Council, organizer of the event

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council’s new summer Pop-Up Drive-In Series kicked off night one at Shorewood High School in front of a sold out crowd this past Saturday night. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this first time adventure for the Arts Council!

For opening night we unlocked the Shoreline Short Short Film Festival vault and picked a variety of award winners and highly rated films from previous seasons to screen.

All of the films were made in Washington and many of the filmmakers were in attendance including Sam Kelly Jr., producer of The Claw from All is Well Studios.

“The Claw was always intended to play large and loud. With film festivals switching to being online, it was a tremendous feeling to see it screen on a big screen to a sold out crowd of cars.
"We heard laughs across the parking lot, and people honked during the opening of the event. This event is bringing joy at a time where filmmakers can rarely see things with an audience. We loved it!” - Sam Kelly Jr.
The audience was asked to vote for the People’s Choice Award and the winner was 2018 Best Picture and Surprised by Shoreline recipient Dinosaurs in the Hood by Long Tran and Nikkia Atkinson. Congrats! You can view the film online here. Warning: it contains language that some will find offensive.

Cars entered the parking lot between 8-9pm with their friends, family, dogs, blankets, lawn chairs, snacks, and masks. Everyone tuned their radios/speakers to a created FM station and maintained physical distancing from car to car throughout the evening.

The series will run through early August. To ensure our communities safety, we have designed the evenings to comply with current state health guidelines. Drive in through our contactless entry system - before you arrive, grab take-out from local restaurants (interactive map here), and settle in for a relaxing night watching film history masterpieces, or a mix of our most loved short films by our very own local talent.

Tickets now on sale for our July 11 screening of the ghoulish classic, Night of the Living Dead (1968). This film is unrated and contains scenes with violence, nudity, and strong language. Parental discretion is advised.

Mark your calendars for the other three Pop-Up Drive-In movie nights! July 11, Night of the Living Dead (1968), July 25, The Little Shop of Horrors (1960), and August 8, Washington made short films. All located at Shorewood High School.

Gallery at Town Center opens with four artists

Wednesday, June 17, 2020

Hours: Tuesday-Saturday, Noon - 5pm
Exhibiting Four New Artists

The Gallery at Town Center has officially reopened and is currently exhibiting a selection of works by local artists Kimberly Leo, Brandi Young, Naoko, Morisawa, and Lisa Sheets. See these works and the creations of over 90 other local artists during Gallery at Town Center hours: Tuesday – Saturday, Noon to 5pm.

Kimberly Leo

Kimberly Leo is originally from New Orleans, Louisiana and has been living in Greater Seattle since 2000. She has a degree in Fine Arts from LSU. Kimberly has a long history with oil painting and abstract landscapes but has recently become obsessed with working with resin and mixed medium. Her art is inspired by natural shapes, crystals, the moon, ebb and flow, friendship, and the cycle of life.

Brandi Young

Brandi is a Shoreline artist, originally from Austin, Texas. For the past few years, Brandi has focused her work on acrylic and collage techniques. She loves taking subjects like cars or buildings and creating a fun contrast of texture and design.

Brandi has a degree in Fine Art from Stephen F. Austin State University. She has worked in photo transfer, colored pencil, acrylic, collage, jewelry making, and anything else that strikes her fancy.

Naoko Morisawa

I make art that is natural, playful and lifts people’s spirits. But I also want my artwork to be about myself, like a diary. Each piece is created with the care one would use writing a letter to a loved one or friend. Bright, fun, and unusual subjects attract and inspire me to work in new directions. Mysterious creatures/objects such as magic mushroom and jellyfish, gravity, Illusions and Waves are recurring themes in my work. My work has been featured in Studio Visit Magazine, London Art Habens Contemporary Art Review, several other international publications printed in Seattle, Tieton, Denver, Omaha, Boston, Tokyo, London, Dublin, Athens and New York.

Lisa Sheets

Lisa Sheets' mixed media collages explore history, gender roles, and cultural norms, and how these things impact our lives. Sheets uses combinations of religious and historical iconography along with pop culture images to stress the sacred in our modern day lives. She emphasizes the constantly shifting and changing roles that shape us, and examines how we unravel those roles through history.

Thank you for supporting local artists and shopping small!

Shoreline Arts Festival 2020 cancelled

Saturday, April 18, 2020

In light of the current stay-at-home orders, and what we perceive to be an unlikely lifting of the ban on large events this summer, the Board and Staff of the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council have decided to cancel the Shoreline Arts Festival for 2020.

The Arts Festival will be back in June 2021 bigger and better than ever, as we find ourselves (hopefully) on the other side of this pandemic and ready to celebrate creativity with our community again. Thank you for your continued support!

Some 2020 Festival activities like Youth Art and Juried Art will move online. If you're interested in registering your artwork for these events, please visit our Festival website for additional information. Updates regarding these activities will be posted soon.

In the meantime, keep an eye out for more virtual events coming soon from the Arts Council! We are committed to the idea that Creativity Can't be Quarantined, and have some new (social distancing approved) creative outlets coming to the community this spring and summer.

The Shoreline Arts Festival is a program of the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council with major support from the City of Shoreline, City of Lake Forest Park, Jack Malek Realtor, Alaska Airlines, and 4Culture.

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to cultivate creativity and inspire our community through the arts.

A little history about the Gallery:

The Gallery is a program of the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council, a not-for-profit organization and features rotating art exhibits, as well as jewelry, ceramics, glass and more by over 90+ local artists.

The shop is located in the Lake Forest Park Town Center, 17171 Bothell Way NE, inside the mall on the lower level.

The Arts Council has maintained an exhibit space/gallery since the organization started. The first location was in the Shoreline Historical Museum (before the Arts Council had its own space) which featured exhibits 4x/year.

After the Arts Council established an office, wall exhibits were shown there. Ceramics, jewelry, etc. started being displayed on a small table in the office along with the wall art in the early 2000s.

In 2009 the separate gallery location in Lake Forest Park opened with eight wall exhibits a year and a diverse selection of locally made wares.
