Wednesday’s Create & Make Workshop: Introduction to Zentangle®

Tuesday, September 12, 2017

Intro to Zentangle®
Create and Make Workshop
Wednesday, September 13th, 6:30pm - 8:30pm
Shoreline Center, 18560 1st Ave NE, Shoreline

Would you like to create a simple but satisfying piece of art in 60 minutes? Then come to our first Create and Make Workshop of 2017. The Zentangle® Method will do just that!

Zentangle® is an easy way of creating beautiful images by drawing structured patterns called tangles. It is a proven method to promote mindfulness and fosters self-esteem, focus, relaxation, creativity, and stress relief.

People of all ages and skill levels can create Zentangle® art and have fun in the process. These classes will provide the historical background of Zentangle while introducing the basic steps of the method and exposure to the associated vocabulary, tools, and skills used. Previous art and drawing experience is not required.

Laurie Bell has been a Music Educator for 35+ years in public and private school settings. She integrates the arts (singing, dancing, drumming composing, playing instruments, etc), as well as doing actual ‘art’ in her music room—including Zentangle®.

She was an Artist in Residence during the 2016-2017 school year for 3rd – 5th grade classes at Brookside Elementary, as well as offering Zentangle for the Brookside PTA Afterschool Enrichment Program. She has taught Zentangle to adults through both the Shoreline and Edmonds Parks and Recreation Departments. She has been doing the Zentangle Method since 2014 and became a Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT) in June 2016.

The workshop will take place on Wednesday, September 13th, and is held from 6:30 – 8:30pm in the Cromwell Room of the Shoreline Center, 18560 1st Ave NE, Shoreline, WA.

Tickets are $35 and available at BrownPaperTickets.com.

Last concert of the year brings overflow crowd to LFP's Animal Acres

Monday, September 11, 2017

Children's performer Tim Noah mesmerized a stage full of children

By Diane Hettrick
Photos by Jerry Pickard

An overflow crowd of families parked for blocks around and filled Animal Acres park on Saturday, September 9, 2017 for the Picnic in the Park.

Families happily spilled over into the brand new Eagle Scout Park across the street, where children played on the new playground equipment in a fenced enclosure while adults sat and ate.

At the main event, there were wonderful activities for the children. The City brought in bouncy houses. The Lake Forest Park Youth Council had handouts about their work and flower pot painting for the younger children.

The petting zoo and the City trucks were kid favorites.
Shoreline/LFP Arts Council had a coloring table for the little ones. North City Water District had a bean bag toss - with a water theme, of course!

Tim Noah, who has been a star in kid concerts for three decades, brought his act to the Showmobile stage.

There was a row of food trucks with meals, shaved ice, and donuts. Hawaiian Shaved Ice was popular all day, in spite of cooler outdoor temperatures.

For the adults, LFP Rotary set up a beer garden. LeRoy Bell and His Only Friends provided an adult concert and closed the program a little past four.

CONCERTS IN THE PARK FINALE
THE COMMANDERS JAZZ ENSEMBLE – BIG JAZZ BAND

August 23rd, 6:30pm (rain or shine)
Cromwell Park
18030 Meridian Ave N, Shoreline 98133

Pack a picnic dinner, gather your family and friends, and come enjoy a free performance by the U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West Jazz Ensemble, at Cromwell Park on Wednesday, August 23rd, 6:30pm

This will be our final Concert in the Park this summer!

The Commanders, a newly-revived ensemble coming from the US Air Force Band of the Golden West, carries on the American musical tradition of the great big bands, yet offers a lot more than the big band sounds. This energetic group of highly-trained professional musicians, formed from 18 Airmen, delivers the full gamut of jazz music - traditional jazz, cool, bop, swing, Broadway favorites, and patriotic music. The Commanders offers an entertaining show you won't soon forget!

A typical evening with The Commanders might include favorites from Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Count Basie, and Dizzy Gillespie to the sounds of today's modern jazz groups delivered by the group's enchantingly talented vocalist. Their renditions of hot jazz feature rousing improvised solos from every instrument in the group. This is an ensemble capable of delivering a truly unique combination of entertainment.

We’re in for another beautiful night of outside music, so be sure to stay hydrated and try some infused waters at the Aegis Living of Shoreline’s free “Hydration Station.”

Concert In the Park entertains through the smoke

Friday, August 4, 2017

It was a very hot day

By Diane Hettrick
Photos by Jerry Pickard

On Wednesday, August 2, 2017, the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Arts Council staged its second concert in LFP's Animal Acres Park.

As always, several hundred people came out for the evening event.

The nice thing about Animal Acres is the tall trees keep the temperature pleasant, even on hot days. People can be in direct sun or in pleasant shade

Even though wildfire smoke was in the air, it didn't seem too bad at ground level, at least not bad enough to keep people away.

The band Lost Dogma played an eclectic mix of Folk, Rock, and Blues - something to please everyone.

The Arts Council, sponsors of the event, handed out information on the rest of the summer concerts and other Arts Council sponsored activities. They also had information about being a member / patron of the Arts Council to support their work.

Aegis Living of Shoreline gave out Watermelon and Strawberry flavored iced water to help people stay hydrated. They have been appearing at events around the area, but on this very hot day they were particularly welcome.

The remainder of the Arts Council summer concerts:

August 9: Different Drummer– Multi-genre Chamber Ensemble. Kruckeberg Botanic Garden, Shoreline

August 16: Champagne Sunday – Raucous Folk. Paramount School Park, Shoreline

August 23: US Air Force Jazz Band – Band of the Golden West’s “The Commanders” Jazz Ensemble. Cromwell Park, Shoreline

Call for Sketchers, Plein Air Painters, and Artists of All Stripes

Friday, September 2, 2016

Artists, we all love our studios.

They're the perfect place to roll up our sleeves and get some work done but, let's face it, they can be a bit lonely too.

So, why not spend a day out of your studio making art with other artists, interacting with the community, and trying out some new mediums?

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council will be hosting the 4th Annual Sketchcrawl at the Lake Forest Park Town Center on Sunday, October 2 from 12pm – 2pm, and they want YOU to take pART!

What exactly is a Sketchcrawl?

The basic idea is to get artists out of the studio and into the public sphere where you can create while engaging the public. You can come sketch what you see: shoppers in The Gallery at Town Center and the Farmer’s Market, people browsing in the bookstore, friends having a meal in The Commons, and kids making art at the Experimentation Station.

By sketching out in public, artists are able to talk about their craft, answer questions, and give instructions to budding artists. The community gets the chance to watch art-in-action, engage with the making process, and discover talented artists that they never knew before.

Interested in joining Sketchcrawl as an Official Sketcher?

Register online through the Arts Council’s website, then check-in at 11:45am on October 2 at Third Place Commons. Plus, the first 10 sketchers to sign up will receive a free event t-shirt!

Sketchcrawl is sponsored by the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council and all artists are welcome.

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to cultivate creativity and inspire our community through the arts.

Business workshops for artists and crafters

Friday, August 26, 2016

Artists and Crafters Unite!

Time to roll up your sleeves, put on your business hats, and get down and dirty with the numbers and paperwork side of being an artist.

This fall the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council will be hosting a series of Art/Business Workshops designed to help you put your best foot forward.

You’ve already done the hard work of pouring your talents and skills into your art, now let us help you take that next step and polish your professional side.

Workshops are held on Tuesdays from 6:30pm - 8:30pm at Shoreline City Hall, Room 301. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased via Brown Paper Tickets.

Professional Practices in the Arts – September 11

This workshop will go over various artwork pricing methods, proper artwork presentation and framing, knowing your market, and self-promotion tools. Presented by Lorie Hoffman and Tara Shadduck of the Arts Council, topics covered will also include how to approach galleries, knowing when to pay for a show and when not, and where you can find more resources to continue to polish your professional side.

Writing an Artist Statement and Bio – September 27

The Artist Statement is a powerful tool, along with titles it’s one of the only ways artists have to give context to their artwork and guide the viewer on how to see your pieces. You work hard to make your art, make sure your Artist Statement is helping you convey that process and supports your vision. Participants should bring what they currently have for statements & bios and be prepared to actively work on their statements during the workshop.

Selling and Discussing Your Own Art: How to Address Performance Anxiety Like a Classical Musician – October 11

Having your artwork judged by others undoubtedly puts many artists in uncomfortable and vulnerable positions. This seminar will examine the latest research and practices of managing performance anxiety by applying lessons used by classical music students and professionals alike. Art in every form requires a confident artist to advocate for its value and importance.

Dr. Kate MacKenzie is a professional musician and musicologist who specializes in understanding performance anxiety in its many complex forms. This seminar will also include a group discussion that will be open for questions and concerns.
