Arts Council Community Spotlight: Harper Flynt, Creative Youth

Thursday, December 4, 2014

In Celebration of 25 years of doing good in our community, the Arts Council would like to take some time and highlight some of our fantastic members who are doing great things in our community.

Harper Flynt - Lake Forest Park

Actor, Missoula Children’s Theater & Arts Festival Youth Artist

What do you love most about our community?

I love that my community is concerned about the environment we live in and recognizes the need for art in people's lives.

How do the arts make an impact in your life?

I love to sing and dance. It makes me feel complete. The theater lets me do both - and act!

Why should someone support the Arts Council?

If not for the Arts Council , I wouldn't be as interested in Show Biz. I have had so much fun acting, and learned so many tips that I wouldn’t have had it not been for the opportunities provided by the Arts Council.

In one word, describe the Arts Council...

Fun!

Join Harper and her family and become a member of the Arts Council. Family Memberships are just $100, and you’ll not only receive great member perks, you’ll also get to bask in the warm glow that comes with knowing you’ve helped foster creativity in your community. Stand with your neighbors who together, over the last 25 years, have invested over $3 million in arts & arts education right here in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.

Arts Council Community Spotlight: Ken Noreen, Art Advocate

Tuesday, December 2, 2014

In Celebration of 25 years of doing good in our community, the Arts Council would like to take some time and highlight some of our fantastic members who are doing great things in our community.

Ken Noreen - Shoreline

Arts Council Founding Board Member
Director of Shoreline Concert Band

What do you love most about our community?

I’m so glad to have raised our children in this community because it’s a place that values the right things; it values what you can succeed in with your individual talents and for a lot of people in this community, that’s the arts.

How do the arts make an impact in your life?

There’s an appreciation as you age for more artistic things. I mean, why do we have the painting in our house that we do? We’re so proud that every place we go we try to bring a painting that means something to my wife and I and that’s just a part of our life, an appreciation of aesthetic things. I really am a sports fan and I love winning, we attend a lot of sporting events, but no way would I give up going to the symphony or the rep in place of that. It’s a life style, something in your heart that you grow with over a period of time. It’s an appreciation for things other than winning or losing.

Why should someone support the Arts Council?

It’s important to support our own local arts organization because this money goes back into our local groups like Shoreline Concert Band or the schools. It’s a reflection of our community, I wouldn’t have ever wanted to raise or family in another community, and that’s why we support the Arts Council.

Join Ken and become a member of the Arts Council. You’ll not only receive some great member perks, you’ll also get to bask in the warm glow that comes with knowing you’ve helped foster creativity in your community. Stand with your neighbors who together have invested over $3 million in arts and arts education right here in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park over the last 25 years.

Ugandan Orphan’s Choir a huge success

Thursday, March 21, 2013

This last weekend the Shoreline – Lake Forest Park Arts Council hosted the Ugandan Orphan’s Choir at the Shoreline Community College. This bright, energetic group of children preformed to a raucous crowd of delighted children and adults, and had children up dancing in the aisles.

“My granddaughter and I attended the performance. What a joy! I would have paid much more than the $8.00 to see these children perform. Thank you Shoreline-Lake forest Park Arts Council for bringing us these wonderful programs and bringing diversity into our lives. My granddaughter and I support a little girl from Uganda thru World Vision and it was so good for my granddaughter to see these darling children showing us a small part of their country and music.” – Shirley Lovelace

Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council puts Artists in Schools

Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” Doing something creative every day fuels the imagination, and helps learning. That’s why we must bring the arts in all forms to schools.

This year, the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council, together with the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation and Opus Bank Community Foundation, has funded over 20 Artists in Schools projects in our schools. Some are occurring as we speak.

One such project is "Creative Dance with Math Experience" at Ridgecrest Elementary. Artist Debbie Gilbert dances with K-6 students, as they build skills, and connect with math concepts like numbers, shapes, fractions and patterns.

Your support of the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council helps us fund these efforts. Mark your calendar: Support Artists in Schools by attending the annual Arts Council Gala on Friday, June 22.

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to nurture all of the arts in the community through programs and events, arts education, advocacy, and support for artists and arts organizations. Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council Announces New Executive Director

Monday, November 14, 2011

Fred Wong is the new Executive Director
of the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park
Arts Council
The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council is pleased to welcome Fred Wong as its new Executive Director. Fred will be joining the Arts Council at the beginning of December, to take the place of Nancy Frey, who is retiring after five years with the Council.

Fred joins the Arts Council with a distinguished background in arts as an artist, educator, and administrator. Over the past fifteen years, Fred has been involved in building public awareness of and access to art, first as an arts educator for the Seattle Art Museum and then for the past ten years as arts administrator for the City of Lynnwood.

In his role as Cultural Arts Supervisor with the City of Lynnwood, Fred worked with his team to build audience, foster strong partnerships in the community, strengthen arts education in schools, and create a clear vision of the role arts plays in the City.

Under his guidance, his team was the first City program to officially use e-marketing and brand its website. The Arts Council looks forward to bringing Fred’s unique and varied blend of artistic, educational, technical, and leadership talents to the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park community.

Says Fred, “Many people are intimidated by the terms ‘art’ and ‘artist.’ They do not view themselves as creative, even though they may have created beautiful gardens, or knitted clothes for friends. In my work and personal life, I am passionate about helping people to nurture their creativity. When I have done that or helped someone realize ‘artist’ is just a label, I am happy. I believe that community arts serve to stir people’s imagination, and to encourage them to find their own creative activities.”

He continued, “Another aspect of community arts is that the arts solve community problems, whether related to community building, civic engagement, education, or crime prevention. I believe strongly that arts organizations, artists, need to partner with non-arts groups to find creative solutions to community needs. I believe a community that strongly supports the arts, will be a strong community.”

As a child, Fred loved to study his grandfather’s Chinese ink paintings, his many art books, and art objects. Fred has painted landscapes in ink since age 11, exhibited his work in the U.S. and Hong Kong, and written a book, “Brush Ink Mind,” about Chinese calligraphy and painting. Fred enjoys hiking, discovering beauty in nature, in arts, in conversation, in food. His wife is a performing artist, and his daughter a student of music. He looks forward to nurturing and supporting the arts and creativity in the Shoreline and Lake Forest Park community.

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to nurture all of the arts in the community through programs and events, arts education, advocacy, and support for artists and arts organizations.
