Former Shoreline Community College baseball player drafted by Milwaukee Brewers

Shoreline Dolphins outfielder Zane Zurbrugg was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 27th round of the 2019 Major League Baseball draft. Zurbrugg played two seasons for the Phins in 2018 and 2019.

In 2019, Zurbrugg earned First Team All-Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) North Outfield honors as well as First Team All-Region American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Northwest honors. He hit .385, which put him in 2nd in the entire NWAC in batting average. Zurbrugg also reached an on-base percentage of .488, which placed him 4th in NWAC, and a .533 slugging percentage, which put him in 10th in NWAC.

After suffering knee and hip injuries during his freshman year, 2019 was Zurbrugg’s first fully healthy season playing for the Dolphins, and he entered the season ready to prove his ability.

“He is a savvy player who sacrificed and worked hard for this opportunity with the MLB and the Brewers,” said Ben Reindel, Athletics Coordinator and Head Softball Coach. “He battled several injuries that put him on the bench, but kept a positive attitude throughout. When he got back to full health and had a chance to show what he can do, he made the most of it.”

A natural athlete, Zurbrugg throws 90+ miles per hour from the outfield and routinely makes infield ground outs into singles. He was recruited to Shoreline from Bremerton High School.

“Zane has worked himself to a position to be proud of,” said Reindel. “We here in Phin Nation are extremely proud and will be rooting Zane on his whole career. Go Brewers!”

Shoreline Community College awarded two competitive federal grants to increase equity, retention and access for underrepresented students

Sunday, October 17, 2021

The U.S. Department of Education awarded Shoreline Community College (Shoreline) its Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP) and Title III Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions Program (AANAPISI) grants, two initiatives designed to help close equity gaps and ensure that all students academically succeed. Both awards are highly competitive and receive more than 100 applications each year.

Shoreline Acting President Phillip King said the combined grant awards will “significantly alter access and success for students at Shoreline Community College.”

The $1.5 million AANAPISI grant will fund supportive services for Asian American, Native-American, Pacific Islander (AANAPI) and low-income students.

Nineteen percent of Shoreline’s students identify as Asian American or Pacific Islander, 29 percent are eligible for need-based financial aid and nearly 28 percent of students are the first in their family to attend college.

King said the opportunity to serve Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students in the college’s service area is a part of a multi-year plan to enhance student support services.

The college said it plans to use the AANAPISI funding to address equity gaps for AAPI and low-income students in all parts of their academic journeys at Shoreline.

While target students are just beginning at the college, students will receive more comprehensive onboarding and counseling. They will continue to receive support along the way as they work their way through the academic pathways at Shoreline in the form of advising and career planning, tutoring and more.

The grant will also fund programs that foster belonging and community among AAPI students, who may often feel excluded or placeless on campus.

The SIP grant will help by providing similar support services to underrepresented students at Shoreline and will bring in a total $2.3 million over five years.

King said the dedication and hard work by Shoreline research and grant staff Dr. Bayta Maring and Dr. Zack Thill was instrumental in awarding the two grant projects.

Governor Jay Inslee recently appointed Rebecca Chan and Kim Wells to the Shoreline Community College Board of Trustees.

“Rebecca Chan and Kim Wells each bring significant financial and organizational management experience to the Board of Trustees, and the College is pleased to welcome them into the campus community,” said Acting President Phillip King.

Rebecca Chan, SCC Board of Trustees

Rebecca Chan is a licensed CPA and Finance Manager at Providence St Joseph Health, with more than 15 years of healthcare finance experience.

She earned a bachelor’s in business administration with a concentration in accounting from the University of Washington.

A resident of the city of Shoreline, Chan has volunteered with a variety of nonprofit organizations for many years and currently serves on the King County Women’s Advisory Board, focusing on gender-based violence.

"As a first-born daughter of an immigrant family, I know the importance of education and mentorship.
"Being a Shoreline trustee resonates with my core values of education and healthcare as human rights; these basic needs translate to a safe and healthy community. The community college system is the pipeline to living wage jobs in healthcare and other industries,” Chan said.
Kim Wells, SCC Board of Trustees

Kim Wells
is the Director of Organization Development and Learning at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, with over 25 years of experience in human resources and talent management.

She has a master’s degree from the University of Washington, where she studied evaluation methods for organizational interventions.

Wells has served on many community boards, including Bridges Multicultural Theater and BirdNote, and she started the first diversity, equity, and inclusion effort at Fred Hutch in 2000 as well as chaired its Diversity Committee for several years.

“I started my career out of graduate school teaching English at Seattle Central College and saw firsthand how important community colleges are to the educational system.
"I look forward to serving on Shoreline’s Board of Trustees and doing my part to support the College’s continued success and growth,” said Wells.

Chan and Wells’s terms at the College both began in June 2021. They join three other appointed trustees: Chair Catherine D’Ambrosio, Tom Lux, and Eben Pobee.

Founded in 1964, Shoreline Community College offers more than 100 rigorous academic and professional/technical degrees and certificates to meet the lifelong learning needs of its diverse students and communities.

Shoreline’s campus grounds once served as a special place to the Duwamish Tribe for gathering traditional foods in ways that increased the bounty of the land.

The campus is one of the most strikingly beautiful college campuses in Washington state. Learn more at www.shoreline.edu
