SCC Foundation honors Shoreline Area News Editor

Thursday, November 6, 2014

At its 2014 Student Success Campaign Community Breakfast on Thursday, November 6, 2014, the Shoreline Community College Foundation awarded its annual Distinguished Service Award to Diane Hettrick, Editor of the Shoreline Area News.

The award was presented by Stephanie Santeford, SCC Foundation President, and Jim Hills, SCC Special Assistant to the president, Communication and Marketing.

In his remarks, Hills said "I often think of a community as a fabric, woven of many threads. A community is strong when the threads are strong and the weave is tight. Diane Hettrick is one of those strong threads. And the work she does makes sure the weave is tight."

Hettrick said "Shoreline and Lake Forest Park are full of wonderful people, working hard to make our community a better place. I am grateful that people are willing to take the time to share their stories, events, and activities through the Shoreline Area News and pleased that people find value in what they read there."

Thanks to the Lake Forest Park Rotary, veterans in financial need at Shoreline Community College now have a lot more resources available to help.

At the chapter’s Sneaker Ball, held March 1, 2014 at Inglewood Golf Club, attendees raised $13,000 in just seven minutes at the fund-raising dinner and auction.

“Our ‘raise-the-paddle’ event this honored our veterans who may be living with financial uncertainty,” Sally Renn, club president said. “To accomplish this goal, we are contributing funds to the Veterans Emergency Assistance Fund at the Shoreline Community College Foundation.”

Foundation President Mark McVeety said he was gratified at Rotary’s offer to help.
“This is how community works; identify needs and then come together to meet those needs,” McVeety said. “The college has a great Veterans Resource Center and terrific support, but some veterans need help that the college can’t provide. That’s where the Foundation comes in with programs like the emergency fund to help these men and women get the assistance they need when they need it."

Dean of Students Kim Thompson was overwhelmed by the response of the donors at the Sneaker Ball. Thompson oversees Shoreline’s veterans program and led the effort to secure a federal grant that established the Veterans Resource Center.

“This was just beyond my wildest dreams,” Thompson said. “We work closely with the college Foundation and this money will definitely make a difference for many veterans who trying to move on to the next phase of their lives.”

Shoreline Interim President Daryl Campbell attended the event and thanked Rotary and the many donors.

“Rotary and the college are foundational pieces of our community,” Campbell said. “By working together, we’re making that community a better place to live.”

SCC Foundation Breakfast raises funds for students

Sunday, November 10, 2013

SCC Foundation supporters fill the dining hall

The SCC Foundation hosted its Annual Student Success Campaign Community Breakfast on Wednesday, November 6, 2013. Attended by friends, community, business and the campus community, this traditional breakfast raises crucial dollars to support scholarships and other related student financial benefits.

The PUB dining room was filled with supporters. With the theme "Global Pathways," the breakfast raised funds to support to students so they may pursue the knowledge and skills required to compete in a global economic environment.

Foundation President Mark McVeety, and students Mikayla McGill (nursing program), and Shariffa Edwards (dental hygiene student) explained that sometimes just a few hundred dollars can mean the difference between financial stress and the ability to focus on studies.

Often the Foundation is able to provide funds for enrichment programs for students. Sometimes it's money for a bus pass or a textbook.

State funding for two-year colleges has been cut in half in the last five years, and tuition at SCC has doubled. The Foundation helps to bridge the financial gap for students.

The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Sadayoshi Nojima, from the Trajal Hospitality and Tourism College, which has been affiliated with SCC for twenty years, bringing Japanese students to SCC and Edmonds CC for a six month program. Nojima said that within two years he expected to bring a thousand students a year to the two institutions.

The program is part of the SCC goal to create global citizens of its students.

Presidential meeting - Shoreline CC President and Foundation President discuss missions and goals

Saturday, July 6, 2013

Shoreline Community College Interim President Daryl Campbell (left)
and Shoreline Community College Foundation President Mark McVeety
meet on July 1, 2013, in Campbell's office on campus.

Shoreline Community College and the Shoreline Community College Foundation have always worked hand-in-hand to help the college and students, but new leadership at both organizations is bringing fresh energy to the relationship.

Interim President Daryl Campbell at the college and new Foundation Board President Mark McVeety met on the first day of their respective tenures, July 1, 2013, to discuss missions and goals for the two separate-but-supportive organizations.

“The foundation is an important relationship for the college,” Campbell said. “The funds raised by the foundation board members directly help our students.”

Campbell and McVeety discussed new ways the college and foundation can work together to meet the needs of students and make a positive impact both on- and off-campus. During the meeting, Campbell committed $5,000 from the college to support the growth and development of the foundation.

“This is an investment that I’m sure we’ll see returned many times over in support to students,” Campbell said.

McVeety runs the Small Business Accelerator program, a collaborative program between the college and the city of Shoreline that offers free weekly workshops on various business-related topics. It also offers one-on-one business counseling, business mentoring and business-plan development.

“Shoreline Community College has great faculty and programs that are helping students get jobs, go on to universities and lead successful, fulfilling lives,” McVeety said. “Helping to do more of all those things is just a wonderful mission that not only helps individuals, but also helps the surrounding community and the state.”

Next on McVeety’s to-do list is the 16th Annual Student Success Breakfast with this year’s theme, “Global Pathways.”

“The college is really working hard to help all students gain the education and training they need to be successful and competitive in a job market that is really globalized,” McVeety said. “Our theme this year recognizes the effort that the college is making to respond and adapt to the benefit of students.”

The breakfast will be 7-8:30am, Thursday, November 7, 2013, in the Main Dining Room of the PUB, Building 9000. The college address is 16101 Greenwood Ave N, Shoreline 98133. McVeety said he has already purchased the first table and board member John Backes purchased the first event sponsorship.

Rep. Kagi receives “Distinguished Service Award” from Shoreline Community College Foundation

Saturday, November 12, 2011

Rep. Ruth Kagi honored by Shoreline
Community College Foundation
State Rep. Ruth Kagi, of Lake Forest Park, whose district includes the cities of Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, and part of Edmonds, was honored last week with the “Distinguished Service Award” by the Shoreline Community College Foundation.

The award was presented at the Foundation’s annual Student Success Campaign Community Breakfast, which helps raise money for student scholarships and emergency loans.

Kagi, a member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, is a longtime advocate of higher education access for all. Although she has been a regular attendee at previous Student Success Campaign Breakfasts, this year she was unable to accept her award in person.

At the time of the event, Kagi was giving a presentation in Washington, DC on legislation enacted by our state to increase educational stability for foster youth.

“It’s an enormous honor to be recognized by the Foundation with this award, and if I did not have to be in Washington, DC on that day I would have been at the breakfast,” Kagi said. “I’m deeply concerned about cuts to higher education and the effect on financial aid for students. Thanks to organizations like the Shoreline Community College Foundation, private funding can be raised to assist students who otherwise would not be able to afford a college education. These scholarships truly change people’s lives.”

Jane McNabb, Executive Director of the Foundation, said in an email that Kagi’s advocacy on behalf of the college has been “tremendous,” and that, “The Foundation has a history of advocacy for students and [Kagi] has set the standard for this work.”

In the past four years, more than 745 Shoreline Community College students have received a scholarship or emergency loan from the Foundation.

Kagi chairs the House Early Learning and Human Services Committee, and serves on two House fiscal committees – the Health and Human Services Appropriations committee, and the Ways and Means committee.

Her November 3 presentation in Washington, DC was entitled, “Promoting Education Stability For Foster Youth Through Legislation in Washington State.”

SCC Students share their success stories at SCC Foundation Breakfast

Sunday, November 14, 2010

Daniel DeMay left high school during his junior year. The reason? He was bored. Michael Schwartz thought his master’s degree in film and video from a prestigious school would support a 30-year career. It didn’t.

What do the two have in common? They both decided that going back to school was critical, and they found a way to do it through the Shoreline Community College Foundation.

The Shoreline Community College Foundation Annual Breakfast

They were among many students sharing their stories of success because of the assistance of the Foundation at the annual Foundation Breakfast on November 4 on the campus in Shoreline.

The Breakfast is the annual fundraiser of the SCC Foundation.
Jane McNabb, Chief Advancement Officer for the college, was impressed with not only the turnout of community and college members for the event, but with their generosity. “We just raised more than $36,000 for our students,” she said. “It speaks to the commitment to the education of our young adults.” McNabb works with existing community partners and forms new alliances to reduce the college’s reliance on public funding.
The event was sponsored by Spin Alley, Highlands West Dental, Puget Sound Energy, Blackboard, CRISTA Senior Living, the Boeing Employees Credit Union, Dick and Beth Stucky, Scott Saunders and Irene Wagner, Ruth Kagi, Stan and Kathy McNaughton, Roger and Jane McNabb, Jack and Laura Rogers, Eric A. Carlson, DDS, PS, and John Backes.

Dick Stucky accepts his award from the SCC Foundation
Well-known local educator, former member of the SCC Foundation Board and the Board of Trustees, Dick Stucky was honored with the SCC Foundation’s Distinguished Service Award for his dedication to SCC students.
“This honor is special to me,” he said, “but the honor really goes to you,” he said to the audience before telling a poignant story about education.   In 1965, Stucky had just completed his first year of teaching. He wasn’t convinced that he should stay in the classroom or return to farming. A young student told him at the end of the year that she hadn’t liked school before she had him for a teacher. He knew immediately that he no longer had to think about which direction to go.
