He was the Director of the Seattle Urban League, and a key participant in civil rights campaigns against housing discrimination, school segregation, and employment bias.

Shoreline Community College Foundation annual fundraising event raises over $100K for student support

Sunday, December 10, 2023

On Friday, November 3, 2023, the Shoreline Community College Foundation hosted its annual fundraising event in support of students and programs at SCC. With 225 guests, 20 volunteers, and 34 individual and corporate sponsors, $107,682 was raised.

During the event, College President, Dr. Jack Kahn, gave a brief overview of the economic impact of the college on our local community and as part of the State and National economies.

Dr. Kahn's remarks showed the importance that access to an affordable high-quality education represents, not just for the economy, but also the fabric of the community. As he explained, "we can change lives here."

The keynote was given by Emily Portillo, Bridge to Finish Program Manager at the United Way of King County. The United Way of King County partners with Shoreline Community College to connect students with resources that help them stay in and thrive in school.

Ms. Portillo explained that more than half of community college students live below the poverty line. She added that 48% of students end up leaving school due to cost-of-living expenses.

Of those living below the poverty line, a disproportionate number are students of color. She ended her address by thanking the donors who help fund the programs and services that help students thrive.

After a short video where two SCC students shared their stories of how financial assistance from donors helped them succeed, Foundation Board Member and SCC Faculty Tony Doupé made an impassioned appeal for support.

The Shoreline Community College Foundation provides more than $600,000 annually in student scholarships and support and is governed by a volunteer board of dedicated community members. The purpose of the SCC Foundation is to raise funds in support of the students and programs at SCC.

Supporters were generous

Wendy Coates, Executive Director of the Foundation, thanked the audience for their part in ensuring that Shoreline Community College students will have the resources and support they need to finish school.

She also expressed thanks for “the dedicated faculty and staff at SCC for the kind and exceptional instruction and care they provide students every day.”

Ms. Coates ended the program by thanking the audience for coming and for giving so generously.

She asked that as they left, to “think about this - what you did here today was life changing. What you did here today changed the world!”

Shoreline Community College has named Wendy Coates as the new Executive Director- Advancement snf Foundation.

Wendy Coates is an accomplished and dedicated nonprofit executive with a strong track record growing philanthropic and community support.

For the past 10 years, Coates served as the Executive Director for the Hospice of the Northwest Foundation.

During her time there, she was instrumental in planning, funding, and launching programs that enhanced the quality of life for people in the final stages of their lives.

Other milestones accomplished during her time as Executive Director include unprecedented growth in giving and donor retention, improved engagement and satisfaction of board members, the creation and implementation of fiscal policies and procedures that ensured integrity and transparency, and having the Hospice agency named the “Number One Place to Work” by Modern Healthcare Magazine.

Prior to her career in hospice care, Wendy worked as the Development Director at the Olympic College Foundation where she was part of a team that raised 8 million dollars in support of student scholarships, and helped to create the student emergency grant program which provided resources that helped students stay in school.

“It’s an honor to be part of this mission dedicated to student success. I look forward to working with the community to grow philanthropic support and ensure that Shoreline remains financially accessible for everyone wanting a quality education.”

Wendy grew up north of Boston, MA, lived in Alaska for 10 years, and is currently relocating from Anacortes, WA with her husband, Stephen, and their silly pup, Roxy.

She has served on several nonprofit boards, and was a councilperson on the Kitsap County Council for Human Rights. Jeanne Monger honored with Distinguished Community Service Award at SCC 2022 Student Success Luncheon

Friday, December 9, 2022

At the 2022 Student Success Luncheon of the Shoreline Community College Foundation, held in November, Board of Directors Chair Vince Madden presented the Distinguished Community Service Award to Shoreline resident Jeanne Monger.
Jeanne and Larry (on the right) helping to paint the first ELNA mural
Jeanne was recognized for 40 years of volunteer work in the local community, work which continues today. She has been a board member for the Echo Lake Neighborhood Association (ELNA) for 18 years, volunteering for almost every weeding and blackberry removal event, along with her husband Larry. They even helped paint the first Echo Lake mural on NE 205th.
ELNA Picnic
Jeanne plans, cooks, and serves a full picnic dinner for 100 at the annual ELNA work party and picnic in Echo Lake Park.

She is arguably the most active Block Watch Captain in Shoreline, communicating with police and neighbors, performing vacation watches, and with adjoining block watches, closing streets and organizing food and activities for a big National Night Out event every year..

She volunteered with the ShoreLake Arts Council from the day it started and in 2009 was honored with their heART award, in part for her volunteering with the Shoreline Arts Festival, as well as the sound stage at Jazz Walk.

Jeanne was an active PTA member for all the years her daughters Janice and Cindy were in Shoreline Schools. She received PTA's greatest volunteer honor, the Golden Acorn, from Echo Lake Elementary PTA - and then she received an additional Golden Acorn from Shorewood High School PTSA.

Jeanne and Larry are still members of the Echo Lake Elementary PTA.

She is just as active in her Shoreline church, helping to run plant sales, and volunteering with events like the free dinners, and homeless shelters. Most of all, Jeanne and Larry are the maintenance committee, responding to all the issues that arise with the building infrastructure, no matter what time of night, and working with contractors, tenants and neighbors.

In recognition, she was honored as the Lutheran Woman of the Year.

The Monger family: Cindy, Larry, Jeanne, Janice
In her acceptance speech, she called out her husband Larry, who since retirement has joined her in most of her volunteer activities. She was delighted that both of their daughters were at the luncheon, travelling from Bellingham and Staten Island, NY to be there.

The presentation video can be seen on YouTube
The annual Foundation event is a fundraiser for their scholarship program, which provides over $400,000 in scholarships and emergency aid each year to students in need at Shoreline Community College, which allows them to stay in school and finish their programs.

Shoreline Community College welcomes inaugural #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship recipients

Friday, February 14, 2020

Scholarship recipients Maral Atayeva and Yara Musad, 4th and 5th from left respectively, were honored at a welcome reception for the #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship at Shoreline Community College. They pose here with staff from the College’s Foundation and International Education departments. Photo courtesy SCC.

Maral Atayeva, a native of Turkmenistan, and Yara Musad, from the Republic of Sudan, began their studies at Shoreline Community College this fall thanks in part to the #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship offered through a partnership between Shoreline’s International Education department and The Shoreline Community College Foundation.

#YouAreWelcomeHere began in 2016 as a nationwide social media campaign led by Temple University. It evolved from a viral hashtag to a scholarship given out by more than 50 U.S. colleges and universities in 2019.

Shoreline is the first, and so far only, two-year college to award the #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship.

The initial #YouAreWelcomeHere initiative aimed to “send an unequivocal message to prospective students around the world that U.S. colleges and universities welcome them to our campuses,” said Samira Pardanani, Executive Director of International Education at Shoreline.

“It launched at a time when international students and their families were expressing increasing concern regarding both political rhetoric about immigrants as well as an increase in VISA denials,” Pardanani continued.

Shoreline President Dr. Cheryl Roberts embraced the campaign, and #YouAreWelcomeHere spread across campus: the College made pins, t-shirts, signage, and a video and even placed #YouAreWelcomeHere messages on facility trucks.

Temple University asked Shoreline to join Phase 2 of the campaign by creating a #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship. Participating institutions would pledge scholarships for two international students that would pay 50% of their tuition for their entire program of study. Applicants were required to write an essay describing their commitment to promoting intercultural learning and exchange.

To Pardanani, amplifying the #YouAreWelcomeHere message by broadening it from a social media campaign to a scholarship was a win-win.

“The scholarships would provide an opportunity for students who demonstrated commitment to building and enhancing cultural understanding,” said Pardanani. “By paying 50% of their tuition, I liked that we’d be meeting some exceptional students halfway.”

Pardanani worked with the Foundation Board and Mary Brueggeman, Vice President of the Office of Advancement and the Executive Director of the Foundation, to secure funding for the scholarships.

The two recipients, Atayeva and Musad, arrived on campus in September.

“We had a reception for them and there were tears, smiles, and goosebumps as we listened to their stories,” Pardanani said. “Maral and Yara are exceptional students and hold so much promise. It truly feels like a happy ending, and a joyful beginning at the same time!”

Maral Atayeva is from Mary City, the capital city of the Mary Region of Turkmenistan. She came to Shoreline to study liberal arts and sciences. Yara Musad hails from the Republic of Sudan and plans to study psychology. The #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship was integral to both students’ ability to study in the U.S. and at Shoreline.

“Getting a degree in the U.S. seemed impossible for me,” said Atayeva. “I was almost coping with the thought this is only going to be a dream, but with the help of my advisors, mentors, friends in my country, and of course, with the #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship, I was able to accomplish my dream. I could not be happier; Shoreline is the place I wanted to be.”

“As a student here at Shoreline, I have a large amount of opportunities that will enable me to further explore my passion for the sciences,” said Musad. “Not only will I be able to broaden my horizons with the variety of classes provided, I’m also able to explore the vast number of clubs given by the institution.”

Tens of thousands of international students have found success by starting their U.S. education at Shoreline.

“We work one-on-one with students to get them from here to their dream college in the U.S.,” said Pardanani. “International students come here, find immense support as they get comfortable with our education system and living abroad, then go on to succeed at major four-year universities across the country.”

“Never would I think I would be greeted so warmly and offered that much help,” Atayeva said of her experience at Shoreline so far. “I love my professors, advisor, peers, and other staff at Shoreline. They really create an atmosphere of support. I was amazed that it is not only my associate degree that they are helping me with, but also support and help to plan my transferring options.”

“No matter how clichĂ© it sounds, I would still advise other students to believe in their dream, work to accomplish it, and believe in the power of human support,” said Atayeva. “It is wonderful to think that you are cared for by people on the other side of the world who do not even know you. This is what I am experiencing everyday here in Shoreline and I, in fact, feel WELCOMED.”

Scholarships and grants available to students at Shoreline Community College

Tuesday, January 14, 2020

2020 is a better time than ever for Shoreline Community College students to access financial help for school. With many new resources for funding, some students may even qualify for free college.

Washington College Grant (WCG)

Washington College Grant (WCG) is the most powerful and inclusive new source of funding that Shoreline students can access. It allows median and low-income families to go to the state’s two- or four-year colleges for free or for a reduced price.

Beginning fall 2020, the WCG will provide guaranteed need-based financial aid to college students whose household income equals up to 100 percent of the state’s median family income (MFI). Previously, only students with a household income up to 70 percent of the MFI were eligible to receive this free aid.

Award amounts vary based on income, family size, and the school or program students attend. Students whose families make $50,000 or less for a family of four will qualify for free aid at one of Washington’s public colleges. Students whose families make up to the median income of almost $92k for a family of four, will also qualify for some aid.

This makes it far easier to qualify for aid and lowers the cost of college for thousands more families. The WCG is a grant, meaning aid awarded through the program doesn’t need to be repaid.

Eva C. Gordon Memorial Scholarship

Thanks to a recent generous bequest, Shoreline also has an additional $550,000 in scholarships for new students through the Eva C. Gordon Memorial Scholarship. Washington State resident, Eva Gordon, passed in June 2018, leaving nearly $10 million to 17 Washington technical and community colleges. Each college’s foundation received just over half a million to give to students.

“The generosity of this gift is so moving and what it will mean for our students is life-changing,” said Cheryl Roberts, Shoreline Community College President.
“We are extremely honored to accept Ms. Gordon’s donation and carry her legacy forward. These funds will greatly extend the scholarships we are able to offer hardworking students who endeavor to earn a degree or certificate but face great financial challenges to do so.”

The Eva C. Gordon Memorial Scholarship will be open to new Shoreline students in winter 2020. Applications will be available online on the Foundation webpage in January.

Student Emergency Assistance Grant (SEAG) Program

Students already enrolled in college but facing emergency situations that may impact their ability to continue can also access many sources of support at Shoreline. New this year is the Student Emergency Assistance Grant (SEAG) Program funded through the state. The SEAG earmarks $100,000 in assistance to students experiencing unforeseen emergencies affecting their ability to attend classes.

SEAG funds provide low-barrier access to emergency aid for students to pay for food, childcare, transportation, rent, utilities, and other non-tuition related expenses.

United Way emergency funds

The SEAG program is in addition to funds Shoreline already has available through the United Way to provide emergency help for students. In 2018-19, Shoreline received $75,000 in emergency funds through the United Way, which helped over 100 students facing a variety of emergency needs. Shoreline’s award grew to $100,000 in the 2019-20 academic year.

“The United Way recognizes the growing need students have for this type of support,” said Mary Brueggeman, Vice President for Advancement and Executive Director of the Foundation.
“Unexpected expenses as little as $100 can sometimes cause a student to drop out,” she said.

The SEAG and United Way funds ensure students have financial support in the face of emergencies that would otherwise cause them to withdraw from school.

Shoreline Community College Foundation

All these new sources of aid are in addition to the Shoreline Community College Foundation’s already generous annual and quarterly scholarships, which awarded $286,000 to students in 2018-19.

FAFSA

The first step for students to maximize their funding and unlock additional aid sources is to submit a free application for federal student aid (FAFSA).

Contact our financial aid office for more details about how to submit a FAFSA. For more information about scholarships, emergency funds, and grants. contact our Foundation scholarships manager in room 5218 or via email at alaakso@shoreline.edu.

at the 19th Annual Student Success Campaign Community Breakfast

Shoreline Community College Foundation hosted its 19th Annual Student Success Campaign Community Breakfast on November 3, 2016 and raised a record $66,000 ($25,000 more than funds raised in any of the past 18 years).

Shoreline Community College Foundation is dedicated to increasing student access and success at Shoreline Community College and to advocating for students and the college. The breakfast is the Foundation’s primary fundraiser of the year to raise scholarships and emergency assistance funds for students in need.

Mary Brueggeman, Vice President of Advancement at the College and Executive Director of the Foundation, stated she is, “absolutely thrilled with the community support of the students who need assistance to realize their dream of a college education.”

Greg Olson, President of the Foundation Board of Directors, stated “I have seen firsthand the incredible difference our donors make in student’s lives with the scholarships and financial assistance we provide to students in need. Most often, the assistance is the difference between having to drop out of school and being able to continue to completion of their degree.”

Brueggeman and Olson attribute the event’s success to the tremendous community support through donations such as sponsorships and individual gifts. The non-profit offers three sponsorship levels with various degrees of recognition and promotion and table sponsorships.

The event is a community favorite and is described by others as one of the best attended, long-term events in the Shoreline and Lake Forest Park communities.

“We try to make it fun yet meaningful so the community knows what a difference they make to the students,” Brueggeman said. She stated the Foundation also receives invaluable support from the faculty, staff, administration, and Board of Trustees of the College.

The Foundation is already looking forward to next year’s event and asks that everyone mark their calendars for Thursday, November 2, 2017.

Donations can still be sent for this year’s campaign to: Shoreline Community College Foundation, 16101 Greenwood Avenue North, Shoreline, WA 98133.
