The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council would like to thank everyone who came out to take pART in the 27th Annual Shoreline Arts Festival.

It was an incredible turnout of local art and talented artists from around the Northwest.

In addition to all of the unique artwork, there were plenty of highlights, including performances at the Showmobile Main Stage and North Lawn Stage, enlightening cultural room exhibits, scrumptious food and beverages, and of course the brand new Festival After Hours.

The heat was the real deal this year, but you all kept your cool and made it such a memorable experience!
This wonderful celebration of our community’s dedication to creativity is made possible year after year by an amazing group of Festival Committee members, volunteers, staff, sponsors, donors, and members, who the Arts Council is extremely and forever grateful for. Thank you!

Music4Life gives Shoreline Public Schools three additional instruments

Friday, June 30, 2017

David Endicott of Music4Life presents a restored flute and a new 4/4 violin to Leann Rozema

At the Shoreline Arts Festival on Saturday, June 25, David Endicott of Music4Life presented a flute and a new 4/4 (full sized) violin to music teacher Leann Rozema, Superintendent Miner’s representative to Music4Life.

And on Wednesday, June 28, he presented a very unusual convertible (slide/valve) trombone to Shoreline Schools that was accepted for Leann by Shorecrest Office Manager Marlys Pickrell.

Marlys Pickrell holds the covertable trombone
This brings the total of ready-to-play musical instruments delivered to Shoreline Public Schools since Sept. 1, 2016 to 34.  Their estimated fair market value is $17,059.

More are on the way before we close our year out on August 31st.  Our goal is to deliver as many instruments as possible to Shoreline and our other participating school districts before school starts.

During the Festival Endicott took in a trombone, an acoustic guitar, a violin, a flute, and numerous financial donations.

The money will be used to refurbish the instruments, which will then be donated to one of the school districts affiliated with Music4Life.

"We want every child to have a chance to play an instrument, regardless of their family's financial situation."

Endicott was interviewed by KING TV on Saturday as part of the Shoreline Arts Festival. The segment aired Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

IronsBC supports the local arts festival - with bird houses

Wednesday, June 28, 2017

IronsBC helped kids build 150 bird houses
during the Shoreline Arts Festival

The past weekend, June 24-25th, Irons Brothers Construction of Shoreline sponsored the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council's annual Arts Festival.

As a sponsor, our team of carpenters, design professionals, administrative, and sales staff not only manned a booth, but worked in the sweltering heat with kids on a building project.

For eight hours each day, our team built over 150 bird houses with local area children. Not only was this project a lot of fun and helping us to develop a future carpentry work force, but we also helped house over 150 birds and their families!!

Here is some of the information we provided to the families who built bird houses with us:

Placement and when to put up

Some birds begin courtship and nesting activities as early as February, but most birds select sites from late March through May. This is also the time when most migrating birds return to Washington.

Nest boxes can be set out as soon as you notice new birds arriving. However, newly made bird houses need to be set out in winter to weather and air out.

Photos courtesy IronsBC

Where

Boxes should be somewhat concealed, in partial shade and placed where predators can't get to it. Check to be sure birds have an adequate, clear flight path to the entrance hole. If possible, the entrance should face away from the prevailing wind. It usually helps to put the box on a habitat edge: between a group of trees and low-growing bushes, or between bushes and an open meadow, lawn or water.

Tips on Attracting Birds

It may take some time for birds to discover your nest box, even a couple of breeding seasons, so be patient. LEAVE UNFINISHED, no paint or stain.
  • Plant native trees and shrubs for food and shelter
  • Avoid using insecticide sprays whenever possible
  • Leave grass and bush cuttings for nesting material
  • Provide clean water in a birdbath
  • Plant colorful wildflowers that will attract insects for birds to eat
  • Leave 1-inch to 4-inch lengths of string or yarn for nesting material
  • Set out a feeder or two to entice suet and seed-eating birds

Come experience the beauty, accessibility, and warmth of Korean culture and arts in a safe, fun, and inviting environment.

We will have many fun activities and demonstrations in the room for the whole family.

In addition, people are taking notice of Korean culture as K-Pop and Korean drama are becoming a worldwide phenomenon! There will be a K-Pop singing and performance competition for non-Koreans, hosted by SeattleN (Korean online magazine), on the mainstage Saturday, June 24, from 6pm to 9pm.

Shoreline Arts Festival - Performance Preview and After Hours Fun

Monday, June 19, 2017

The Shoreline Arts Festival offers two stages of live music and dance playing all weekend long, and you can see it all without spending a dime!

So sit back, relax, maybe grab a cold beer from the Beer Garden or a tasty treat from the Food Truck Food Court, and be entertained by an array of performances spanning a wide range of styles.

Here’s a preview of what the festival has to offer on Saturday, June 24 and Sunday, June 25 at the Shoreline Center, 18560 1st Ave NE, Shoreline 98155.

The Winterlings
With songs as vivid as feature films, Seattle indie-folk duo The Winterlings take listeners on unexpected journeys soaring with astronauts, hitchhiking in Alaska, fighting beside a female Civil War soldier, and walking deeper into the forest of human existence.

Marina Christopher
Marina Christopher is a talented bassist, vocalist, composer and educator in the local Seattle scene. After achieving a BA in Classical Double Bass performance at Central Washington University, her career in the Seattle scene has been very successful.

Aaron Shay
His foot-stomping songs showcase a unique brand of lyrical craftsmanship, as well as an affinity for literature, technology, and science fiction. With an earnest and charismatic style of performance, Shay blends his songs with storytelling, instigating upbeat sing-alongs that leave audiences delighted and inspired.

Mariachi Guadalajara
It is a tradition that can be defined by eight socio-musical elements: mariachi instrumentation and texture, musical genres and subgenres, performance methods and styles, singing styles and forms, dance styles, performative space, performance clothing, and the word "mariachi".

Mr. Feelgood and The Firm Believers
Since late 2012, Bellingham, Washington’s Mr. Feelgood and The Firm Believers have developed at a blinding pace into an incredibly distinct, newfangled sound. With humanity’s best intentions always in mind, the group spreads their pure happiness and love with a vigorous, get-up-and-move energy with a sound that is unlike any other.

Roemen and The Whereabouts
Roemen and The Whereabouts came together at the beginning of 2012. All 4 guys had played together, and apart, in different bands of all different styles from rock to jazz and from country to pop. Inspired by the recent rise of acts like Mayer Hawthorne and Fitz and The Tantrums as well as the love for the classics like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, this band sets out to do just that.

Arts Festival After Hours

K-Pop World Festival / Food Trucks / Beer Garden
6pm-9pm, Saturday June 24

You wanted more Arts Festival, and you got it! At 6pm the Main Stage, Food Truck Food Court, and Beer Garden will come alive with sound, culture, cuisine, and libations. Join us for dinner, drinks, and a show you will never forget.

K-Pop World Festival - Seattle Preliminary

The Arts Festival Main Stage is the place where dreams come true. We’re excited to be hosting the Seattle Preliminary of this world-wide competitions, the performers you’ll see on our stage have already made it through several rounds of judging and the winners from this show will receive round trip tickets to compete at the K-Pop World Festival Finals in Changwon, South Korea.

Fysah Sands

Born in Seattle and raised in Oklahoma, Fysah embodies the essence of RnB/Soul with a dash of southern charm. She is best known for her engaging stage presence and her powerful vocals. Fysah has collaborated with Gary Shider and Steve Cropper and has since released three albums, the most recent one titled “Another Life.”

Jason Kertson

In 2013, Jason auditioned for “The Voice” Season 5 and had a five minute on air segment. In December 2013, Duff McKagan of Guns n’ Roses contacted Jason and asked if he would play guitar in the Pink Slips, a band that his daughter Grace was forming. They performed together for the first time in Seattle on New Year’s Eve 2013 and recorded an EP in 2014. Jason has also performed with his own Seattle area band for the past five years. He already has over 100 original songs to his credit.

Critical Distance

Shoreline/SnoCo locals! Rock and roll … AND MORE. We play an eclectic mix of original songs with a few covers thrown in for good measure.

The W Lovers

Fleur and Wesley Wood have made their mark on the live music scene all over the American West, with more than 300 live shows since their inception in 2014. Based in Washington State and friends of the road, touring has taken them from Washington to Colorado and through New Mexico, California and Oregon over the summer months this year.

Sundae + Mr. Goessl

A delightful throwback to a time when music was the entertainment, Sundae + Mr. Goessl perform a wide variety of “Vintage Jazz”. With Sundae’s sparkling personality, she almost reaches out to grab the audience as she sings and the banter between songs is pure hilarity. Mr. Goessl’s impeccable jazz guitar work is nothing short of incredible and although he doesn’t talk, he speaks to the listeners through his instrument.

Billy Brandt w/ the Thing n Stuff Band

Billy Brandt w/ the Thing and the Stuff Band’s music has working class appeal that radiates masculine charm and chutzpah. A voice like dark roasted coffee with a hint of cream and a band as sweet as the cube of sugar. His original music speaks to everyman themes of love, loss and possibility, reflecting a depth of influences from Ray Charles and Lou Rawls to Frank Sinatra and Mose Allison.
