Shoreline Area News: 2017 in review

Sunday, December 31, 2017

The Shoreline Area News has a regular cartoonist - Whitney Potter

The Shoreline Area News has published over 3800 stories so far in 2017. Following is one story from each month of the year, typical of some of the topics we cover.

January - Schools
Echo Lake 5th graders sworn in as Presidents in Olympia
Teachers Karen Nicholson and Allan Rand taught their 5th graders a Social Studies Storypath on the election process, learning about our government, political parties, platforms, the electoral college and culminating with the election of a president in each of the two classrooms. The classes travelled to Olympia where their elected Presidents were sworn in by a State Supreme Court judge and chatted with the governor.

February - Parks and Gardeners
Volunteer Opportunity at Grace Cole Park
An announcement for volunteer gardeners to help remove invasive species at Grace Cole Park was one of many gardening events in parks all over Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. Our parks look better every year because of the hundreds of hours of work put in by volunteers. Groups are formed around specific parks, pathways, and trails. They are led by Master Gardeners, Rotary clubs, neighborhood associations, or individuals with a passion. Victoria Gilleland writes a regular gardening column.

March - Politics
Kagi emphasizes role of early learning in foster care in Democrats' budget
Evan Smith covered politics all year, checking in with city councils and state legislators.

April - Theater
Theater Review: The Drowsy Chaperone receives a well-deserved standing ovation
Doug Gochanour reviewed productions from Driftwood Players, Phoenix Theatre, Shoreline Community College Drama, and Aurora Theatre Company. Jim Anderson covered Seattle Musical Theatre.

May - Sports
Sasha Gaeth and Gunnar Thorstenson save their best tennis for State
High school sports are covered by volunteers associated with an individual team. In tennis, coaches Arnie Moreno at Shorewood and Rob Mann at Shorecrest have been stellar at consistently sending reports and photos of their teams. Other sports had parents who stepped up to provide information about their teams. 2017 had particularly good football coverage from both schools.

June - Photographers
Demo Day - Abandoned buildings at Fircrest come down
We have been blessed with wonderful photographers. Steve Robinson, Jerry Pickard, Wayne Pridemore, Lee Lageschulte, Marc Weinberg, Jan Hansen. Other regulars are Frank Kleyn, Shirley Sidell, Dan Short, Lien Titus, Janet Way, Martin de Grazia, Bruce Hill, Carl Dinse, Seattle Poppy, G M Wiegand, Geoff Vlcek, Mike Remarcke. Then the readers who see news happening, take a photo and send it in. And all the bird photographers who give Christine Southwick permission to use their photos in her popular For the Birds columns.

July - Weather
WeatherWatcher - Heat wave coming
Carl Dinse tracks the weather at his private Shoreline weather station.

August - Letters to the Editor
What NOT to do if you find a dead cat
We welcome letters to the editor, and receive them on a variety of topics.

September - Art
New show opens at the Gallery at Town Center
We also follow the openings of art exhibits sponsored by the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Arts Council in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, Galleria Essentia in Ballinger Terrace, Shoreline Community College art gallery. We ran a series on Public Art in Shoreline and are working on other art related stories.

October - Fire and police
Fire calls and Police blotter
Fire and police actions in Shoreline are a regular feature; articles on fires and police action in Lake Forest Park are also published.

November - Neighborhoods, PTA
Pumpkin Pie for Hillwood neighbors
Meetings, event, projects of local PTA units, neighborhood associations, clubs, and groups - and there are a lot in the area!

December - Veterans
Patton's soldier
VFW post events, Shoreline Veterans' Association, Memorial Day, Veterans' Day, Medal of Honor winners, ceremonies at local cemeteries are all part of what we do.

Apologies to those who have not been mentioned. We truly appreciate everyone's contributions.

Do you like reading Shoreline Area News? Why "Net Neutrality" matters

Saturday, December 2, 2017

Net Neutrality

Current Federal Communication Commission (FCC) rules prohibit Internet providers like Comcast, Verizon, and AT/T from paid prioritization and require equal access for all.

County Executive Dow Constantine says,
Imagine if your cable or phone company got to decide what you could and couldn't see on the internet, or made it slower and more expensive to visit sites they didn't own - or didn't agree with.
The chairman of the FCC has proposed to destroy the principle of net neutrality, which prevents internet service providers like AT/T, Comcast, CenturyLink and Verizon from speeding up, slowing down, or blocking any specific content, applications, or websites.

The FCC is expected to vote on repealing Net Neutrality on December 14.

To comment to the FCC, follow these instructions:

1. On a computer, (not your phone!), go to: www.fcc.gov/ecfs/filings/express

2. Enter (under "Proceeding") the numbers 17-108 - then hit enter/return

3. After your name, hit enter/return

4. In comments, say you support Title 2 oversight of ISPs, and support net neutrality.

Local Independent Online News Publishers (LION) is a national nonprofit organization with more than 180 members operating locally focused news sites in 42 states. The group issued a statement on Monday expressing deep concern about the FCC’s proposal to scrap Net Neutrality rules.

Local independent online news sites (such as the Shoreline Area News) are springing up all over the country to fill gaps in local journalism, but they rely on an Internet-based level playing field for all publishers and readers, regardless of size or resources.
If Net Neutrality goes away, big internet and wireless providers will be able to charge individual publishers for levels of speed and access, a scenario in which a handful of big companies with deep pockets could squeeze out the kind of small, independent news publishers who are part of LION.

Contact our congressional delegation and ask them to protect Net Neutrality:

Life Changes: a farewell from Frank Workman

Thursday, August 3, 2017

Frank Workman and grandbaby Emma
When my then 8 year old son Tim came home with a Shorecrest Football Big Buddy/Little Buddy sign-up sheet during the first week of school in 1993, little did I know at the time how it would change my life.

We signed him up and went to the first football game of the season, and I’ve been going to Shorecrest games ever since.

That first SC game reminded me of being a third-grader myself when Bob Russell’s dad loaded up a bunch of us boys into his station wagon and took us to watch the local team, our future high school, play.

The lights, excitement and enthusiasm took my breath away.

Nearly sixty years later, it still does.

Later in the fall of ’93, we watched the Scots’ girls’ soccer team win State. Mindy Dalziel (nee’ Falor), now the SC coach, played an instrumental role in securing the championship banner that hangs in the gym today.

The next spring we watched Tim’s Big Buddy, Jason Wieg, play for the Scots baseball team, under the brilliant coaching of the legendary Stan Taloff. We followed the Scots’ diamond fortunes for years until it was Tim’s time to play for the green-and-gold.

In 1995 the local Little League let it be known they were looking for a new Umpire-in-Chief. When I expressed an interest, they all but sent a limousine to pick me up, to have me put it in writing, lest I come to my senses and change my mind. I served five of six years, umpired hundreds of games, and got to meet and become friends with more players and parents than I can remember.

Five years later, Alisa Milner (of the fiddling Milner family) invited us to watch her Scots basketball team play. The gym was packed, the band was playing, and the effort, grace, and teamwork were awe-inspiring. I became hooked on girls’ basketball.

In the process, I met Henry Akin and Scott Farquhar, whose daughters played hoops for the Scots. Years after their girls’ graduations, we still go to games and then rehash them afterwards at the malt shop. I’m not sure which is more fun, the games or the malt shop.

In time, I was handed a microphone by our brilliant District Athletic Director Don Dalziel. A dozen years ago I got to introduce the award winners at the Shoreline Invitational Track Meet. Later I was asked to do the Public Address for all the other events at the stadium, and for SC boys’ and girls’ basketball as well. My thanks to Short Pants Steve Pouley for showing me the PA ropes.

In the fall of 2007, I was given the opportunity to call the play-by-play of a televised SC football game for the district on Channel 26, as part of the Live Video Production Club. After that game, SW’s Marty Ballew and SC’s Trent Mitchell took me aside and asked if I announced soccer games too. I lied and said yes. The next week we aired our first soccer game.

Ten years and ninety games later (with upwards of 25 different students calling the action with me, including the great Joe Veyera who announced two dozen of them alongside me), it’s time to pass the microphone to someone else. I can’t run or jump or throw anymore, but I seem to be able to talk up a storm. I am indebted eternally to Marty and Trent for giving me the chance to live out a dream, and to be able to put the spotlight on our high school athletes.

Along the way, I would crank out articles for our local publications, including the Seattle Times and the dearly departed Enterprise. At first they were usually game reports of Tim’s Little League All-Star games. Commentary columns followed.

Lately I’ve been given a forum here in the Shoreline Area News, thanks to Diane Hettrick. Whenever she needs content in the worst way, I’ve been just the guy to give it to her.

You, too, can help fill space in this publication. Just submit your offerings to editor@shorelineareanews.com.

Diane’s batting 1.000 with me when it comes to publishing my efforts. If your teams or other interests aren’t getting coverage, don’t complain about it, do it your own self.

All these new avenues I pursued in the last 25 years ---HS sports fan, umpire, public address / play-by-play announcer, and writer, were changes in my life I didn’t see coming.

Changes, disguised as opportunities, await us all.

Now a new change awaits for me---- being a grandparent. My wife and I have pulled up stakes and moved to San Diego. We want to be close to Tim and his beautiful wife Jena, who have blessed us with a pair of granddaughters.

I’ve spent the better part of the last twenty-five years watching other people’s kids (and grandkids) play games. I want to be on the sidelines watching Emma and Rosie when it’s their turn to take the field.

I sure want to thank all the young athletes (past, present, and future) whose exploits have excited, enthused, and inspired me.

You may not be able to hear me, but I’ll always be cheering for you.

--Frank Workman

Did you know that there is an email edition of the Shoreline Area News?

Every day, a program called Feedburner picks up every story we have published in the previous 24 hours and sends them to subscribers in one daily email digest.

Subscribers appreciate not missing any stories. They also like the list of story titles at the top of the email, so they can decide what they want to read.

Readers who get occasional stories on Facebook or from other sources are usually surprised at the number of daily stories.

Subscribe to Shoreline Area News by Email

Once you subscribe, you will receive a confirmation email from Feedburner. It contains a link that must be clicked.

Usually the first digest will arrive the next morning around 6am.

If you ignore the email and link from Feedburner - no subscription. There are hundreds of emails from people who never completed their subscriptions. Don't be one of them!

Happy Thanksgiving

Thursday, November 24, 2016

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. Try to spend the day thinking of all the things that make you thankful - and don't discuss politics with your family!

I'm thankful for all the lovely people who take the photos that appear in this publication, who send in events, stories, poems, and press releases and write stories.

I'm thankful for people who point out errors and ask questions.

I'm thankful for people who subscribe, who Friend us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, or download us on their webpages. I'm thankful for people who share our stories and say where they came from, who tell their friends, neighbors, and coworkers about us.

I'm thankful for everyone who reads the stories - or looks at the headlines!

Invitation to submit articles

Tuesday, October 25, 2016

By Diane Hettrick

Is there something that you wish we would publish? Maybe that's a story that you should write. If you are worried about your writing - I'll edit your work. If you don't take photos - we have wonderful photographers.

I can tell you some things I wish readers would submit:

  • Restaurant reviews - you don't have to be a critic. Just tell us about your go-to restaurant in Shoreline or Lake Forest Park. Favorite dishes? Atmosphere? Friendly staff? Affordable? Take-out?
  • Favorite park - do you have a favorite spot in a local park?
  • Small business - there are small, locally owned businesses that have been here for years, but not everyone knows about them.
  • Organizations - just when I think I know all the local groups, I find out about a new one. Have we published information about your group?
  • Celebrations - anniversaries, weddings, engagements - you will have to submit your own photos for these!
Other ideas? Drop me a line.

Technical difficulties

Tuesday, May 10, 2016

For our web, RSS, and email readers - here's the reason we only published one story yesterday, from Assistant Editor (and tech support) Carl Dinse:

Blogger, which is the service we use for the ShorelineAreaNews.com website is currently having a major outage. We are unable to reach the website, or our editing interface for publishing stories at this time. I've checked all of the other sites I know are hosted by blogger and they appear to be offline as well. I have also tested alternative internet connections to make sure it wasn't a comcast specific issue. I have a bunch of stuff in queue to be published but will not be able to do so until this outage is resolved by Google. Thank you for your patience. -Carl Dinse

Email subscribers: Links are working again

Tuesday, March 24, 2015

Thanks to reader and web developer Jeff D, who sussed out the coding problem at Feedburner (something about an html tag that got added) and posted his analysis to the user group, Feedburner has removed the offending tag and the links now work again.

Clicking on a title in the table of contents will once again take you to the specific story instead of to the web page.

Which reminds me - some email browsers have length limits. If I publish a large number of stories, the email may lop off the bottom of the digest. There will be a small link at the very bottom which will take you to the webpage to read the rest.

And watch for the links in the stories. I "embed" them, which means that the stories do not openly display the email address or a link to a web page (some of these links are three lines long!). Look for an underline on a word. The word may be a different color or it may just have a very faint line. If you click this word, it will take you to a webpage with more information about the organization or event.

Thanks for your patience!

--Diane Hettrick

Note to email subscribers

Friday, March 20, 2015

For many of you, there was a change in the way that your email edition works.

Starting last week, the links to the stories at the head of each email digest no longer take you to the story in the digest, but open a web page and display the most recent story posted.

This is nothing that we have done. We use a product called FeedBurner that collects all the stories from a 24 hour period and sends them out in a digest to subscribers. It has worked smoothly for five years.

FeedBurner has made no announcements about changes, so I'm hoping this is a temporary glitch. Some domains (yahoo and hotmail) do not seem to be affected.

Downstairs on the lower level, the halls will be filled with craft vendors showing their goods for holiday gifts.

SCC Foundation honors Shoreline Area News Editor

Thursday, November 6, 2014

At its 2014 Student Success Campaign Community Breakfast on Thursday, November 6, 2014, the Shoreline Community College Foundation awarded its annual Distinguished Service Award to Diane Hettrick, Editor of the Shoreline Area News.

The award was presented by Stephanie Santeford, SCC Foundation President, and Jim Hills, SCC Special Assistant to the president, Communication and Marketing.

In his remarks, Hills said "I often think of a community as a fabric, woven of many threads. A community is strong when the threads are strong and the weave is tight. Diane Hettrick is one of those strong threads. And the work she does makes sure the weave is tight."

Hettrick said "Shoreline and Lake Forest Park are full of wonderful people, working hard to make our community a better place. I am grateful that people are willing to take the time to share their stories, events, and activities through the Shoreline Area News and pleased that people find value in what they read there."

The SCC Foundation Breakfast raises money to help Shoreline CC students meet their financial challenges so they can stay in school and finish their programs. It offers scholarships, emergency grants, and advice to SCC students in need.

Farewell from reporter Devon Vose Rickabaugh

Saturday, March 8, 2014

Dear Readers of the Shoreline Area News,

I’ve decided to move on from my job as reporter for the Shoreline City Council meetings for the past several years. I’ve observed the council members doing the city’s work: struggling with economic conditions and trying to balance sidewalk safety with available funds, and successfully applying for many grants to help with big projects like the Aurora Corridor improvements and sidewalks near schools.

I’ve been gratified to see city residents come before the council meetings to voice their opinions on items close to their lives like the city’s plastic bag ban and building setback rulings. I’ve enjoyed shaping the important agenda items into what I hope have been informative articles. Also it’s been a thrill to be recognized by Shoreline residents and complimented on my work, or criticized for not covering an event from their perspective.

As a poet and an artist I plan to explore new areas like auditing art history classes at UW and as always playing with my grandbabies. Should any of you want to see my poetry and art I’ve made a small book blog.

Shoreline has been a great place to raise my family and be part of covering the news.

Sincerely,

Devon Vose Rickabaugh

How to share an article with a friend

Tuesday, February 26, 2013

Many times you would like to share a particular article with friends or family. I know this because you either tell me or you accidently send the entire email digest back to me when you are trying to forward it to friends!

Here's a relatively easy way to isolate one article and send it to someone.

Whether you are reading the email digest, or the web version - click the title of the story.

This should take you to the web version of the story.

Go to the "title" window at the top of the web page - the long, skinny window - and the URL for the story should appear.

If you started with the email version and the URL includes the words "Feed Burner" then click or double click the story title again.

The URL will be long, with most of the story title, and will end in .html

For example:
http://www.shorelineareanews.com/2013/02/artists-open-house-scheduled-for-march.html

Copy the URL, paste it into an email, and send it to your friends and family. It will appear as a live link they can click which will take them directly to the story.

Facebook has made it very easy to share stories. Click the title of the story, then the email icon and all you have to do is put in your friend's address and a note from you. Facebook puts the link in for you.

Shoreline Area News - up and running

Friday, November 2, 2012

Our technical issues are resolved, thanks to the work of our WeatherWatcher Carl Dinse, who has stepped into the additional role of tech support for the Shoreline Area News.

If you sent an email that bounced, please resend it. Otherwise I will be working through the newly full in box over the next couple of days.

This is a good opportunity to let you know that we welcome your stories about things happening with your PTAs, churches, clubs, community sports, charities, businesses and whatever else you are involved with in our communities.

And all you great photographers out there - and all of you with digital cameras in your pockets - when you see something interesting happening, stop and take a photo to send to us. It would be good if you could get a few details to go with the photo, but I may already have the story, so don't let that stop you.

And don't forget to tell your friends and neighbors about the Shoreline Area News. We are on the web, on Facebook (Friend us!), Twitter @ShorelineArea. You can set up a feed to your email or webpage, Follow our blog, or subscribe to the email edition (front page of the website has the info).

Where's my Shoreline Area News!

Thursday, October 25, 2012

Where's my Shoreline Area News!

Hopefully, you won't have to ask that question.

However, we are doing some behind the scenes stuff that may cause us to go dark for a couple of days after the 25th.

If so, we'll use that time to catch up on sleep and you can use the time to send us some stories!

Our Facebook page (Shoreline Area News) and our Twitter feed (@ShorelineArea) will still be available for breaking news.
