Jeanne Monger honored with Distinguished Community Service Award at SCC 2022 Student Success Luncheon

Friday, December 9, 2022

At the 2022 Student Success Luncheon of the Shoreline Community College Foundation, held in November, Board of Directors Chair Vince Madden presented the Distinguished Community Service Award to Shoreline resident Jeanne Monger.
Jeanne and Larry (on the right) helping to paint the first ELNA mural
Jeanne was recognized for 40 years of volunteer work in the local community, work which continues today. She has been a board member for the Echo Lake Neighborhood Association (ELNA) for 18 years, volunteering for almost every weeding and blackberry removal event, along with her husband Larry. They even helped paint the first Echo Lake mural on NE 205th.
ELNA Picnic
Jeanne plans, cooks, and serves a full picnic dinner for 100 at the annual ELNA work party and picnic in Echo Lake Park.

She is arguably the most active Block Watch Captain in Shoreline, communicating with police and neighbors, performing vacation watches, and with adjoining block watches, closing streets and organizing food and activities for a big National Night Out event every year..

She volunteered with the ShoreLake Arts Council from the day it started and in 2009 was honored with their heART award, in part for her volunteering with the Shoreline Arts Festival, as well as the sound stage at Jazz Walk.

Jeanne was an active PTA member for all the years her daughters Janice and Cindy were in Shoreline Schools. She received PTA's greatest volunteer honor, the Golden Acorn, from Echo Lake Elementary PTA - and then she received an additional Golden Acorn from Shorewood High School PTSA.

Jeanne and Larry are still members of the Echo Lake Elementary PTA.

She is just as active in her Shoreline church, helping to run plant sales, and volunteering with events like the free dinners, and homeless shelters. Most of all, Jeanne and Larry are the maintenance committee, responding to all the issues that arise with the building infrastructure, no matter what time of night, and working with contractors, tenants and neighbors.

In recognition, she was honored as the Lutheran Woman of the Year.

The Monger family: Cindy, Larry, Jeanne, Janice
In her acceptance speech, she called out her husband Larry, who since retirement has joined her in most of her volunteer activities. She was delighted that both of their daughters were at the luncheon, travelling from Bellingham and Staten Island, NY to be there.

The presentation video can be seen on YouTube
The annual Foundation event is a fundraiser for their scholarship program, which provides over $400,000 in scholarships and emergency aid each year to students in need at Shoreline Community College, which allows them to stay in school and finish their programs.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Jessica Jorgensen
Jessica Jorgensen has always been a curious observer, and along with that curiosity came the desire to document; to draw and paint the visual absurdities and narratives she sees through the objects and people in her everyday life.

She grew up in the California Bay Area and graduated in 2008 with a BFA in Drawing and Painting from Biola University. In 2012 she relocated to Seattle and opened her Etsy shop, drawing and painting custom portraits for clients across the US.

She proudly calls the Pacific Northwest home, and has participated in various solo and group shows, while continuing to teach art classes in her community.

When she’s not working in the studio, she can be found enjoying long walks outdoors with her chocolate lab Roscoe or curling up with a good book.

Valencia Carroll
Valencia Carroll is a classically trained oil painter. She has exhibited, presented and taught art workshops throughout western WA.

She has also served as Art Docent Program Coordinator in the Northshore School District for multiple years. Her latest artwork explores the subject of play while enjoying drawing and experimenting with composition throughout her process.

Free Concerts in the Park

Northwest Blend | Hawaiian
Wednesday, August 17, 6:30pm
Kruckeberg Botanic Garden

ShoreLake Arts’ last free concert in the park for the season is happening at 6:30pm on Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at the Kruckeberg Botanic Garden located in Shoreline. Northwest Blend is a unique band performing Hawaiian music which is going to be a joyful, fun night out with friends and family.

Bring your low chairs, blankets, and picnic supplies. Dress for the weather. If you bring a high chair, please try to sit further back so you don’t obstruct your neighbor’s view. The garden is not usually open on Wednesday evenings so this is a special treat.

Parking - Kruckeberg Botanic Garden has limited parking available. But you may also park at Richmond Beach Congregational. It’s about a 5-10 minute walk. Ridesharing (Lyft/Uber) is a great option as well!

Kruckeberg Botanic Garden is a hidden gem tucked away in a neighborhood in Richmond Beach. This four-acre public garden contains a unique blend of Pacific Northwest native plants and unusual exotics set in a naturalistic wooded setting.

ShoreLake Arts is proud to present this event with major support from Jack Malek of Windermere Real Estate, City of Lake Forest Park, City of Shoreline, Kruckeberg Botanic Garden, and individual donors, like you.

2022 ShoreLake Battle of the Bands ends on a High Note

Friday, August 12, 2022

First place: Jamm

What an incredible turnout from the community! Over the course of three nights featuring amazing local musicians and performances, there were over a 1,000 guests who came out to support the bands and ShoreLake Arts. Thank you to all of you for making it a week to remember!

A concert, a competition, a community event for all age groups, a platform to nourish talent, this year's Battle of the Bands was all that and more. The highlights were many, including a beer garden sponsored by Monka Brewing Co., food trucks, and musician Q and A’s on stage with emcee Sasha Cousineau. Of course all of this was capped off with five wonderful performances by such talented local musicians. The future is bright!

Speaking of wonderful performances, the group of seven judges had the difficult task of selecting the winners. Scott Markley from Annex Room Studio presented the 1st place award.

Congratulations to Jamn!

They gave the City of Lake Forest Park a stellar performance weaving through their songs, anchored by vivid lyrics and vocals. Undeniably catchy! They are getting $1,500 in cash and a day of recording studio time at the legendary Robert Lang Studios.

And congratulations to the runner-up Rug! E. Pruitt and Jeannie Rak presented the second place award to this band who gave us a powerful performance. They left an everlasting impression in just 15 minutes. Their prize is $1,000 in cash and a performer’s gear package from Mackie including speakers, tripod stands and a pair of dynamic microphones.

Runner up: Rug

This year also included the People’s Choice Award where the audience voted for their favorite band - Stargazy Pie.

The award of $500 in cash and recording studio time at Robert lang Studios was presented by Jack Malek of Windermere. Thank you to all of our judges Robert Lang, Tina Lang, Scott Markley, E. Pruitt, Jesse Field, Alex Donka, and Jeannie Rak for all of their work bringing this event together and a special shout out to Aidan Gallagher, one of the stars in the Netflix series, The Umbrella Academy, who stepped in as a guest judge on Tuesday night.

Neighbors enjoying the night at Battle of the Bands

There are moments in life where you feel such a high level of positivity in your community that you forget all about the woes of the world and just feel joy. That moment was Saturday night at the Shorelake Arts Battle of the Bands held in Lake Forest Park’s Animal Acres Park.

JAMN take their turn on stage

An audience of all ages, from young children, teenagers, young adults, and yes - us senior citizens -  gathered together in our local park to listen to Five Bands “battling” to win first prize.

It almost seemed a misnomer to call it a battle as all of the bands were grateful and supportive of each other as artists who all shared a common love of expressing themselves with music.

As I watched the children dancing with their unrestrained delight enveloping the audience with their exuberance, I felt grateful to ShoreLake Arts and the City of Lake Forest Park for providing us with this beautiful evening.
