CANCELLED: Shakespeare in the Park Wednesday, July 13, 2022

Wednesday, July 6, 2022

Join ShoreLake Arts for
Shakespeare's Cymbeline
July 13, 6:30pm
Richmond Beach Library Park

UPDATE: the Shakespeare in the Park performance was cancelled "due to COVID."

Get thee to the park, with picnic, family, friends and blankets in tow to experience this rarely performed romance.

Under the direction of Makaela Milburn, prepare yourself for this Twisted Tale.

Cymbeline is not your average Shakespeare comedy as the story quickly twists to the dark side. A wicked stepmother, a spoiled prince, and a wayward villain match wits with clever Imogen, but even the best of folks hit low points.

What happens after “happily-ever-after” can look a whole lot different than what you dreamed.

Touted as a modern, queer-forward folktale of scrappy resolve, identity exploration, and big-hearted forgiveness.

A wondrous small company of players bring this story to life with music and a joyful pastiche of styles to illuminate this rarely performed production.

FREE. Walk-up.

YOUR support makes this program possible. Thank you!

July 13, Wednesday Wooden O's production of Cymbeline, 6:30-8:30pm
Richmond Beach Community Park, Shoreline

Production information available https://www.seattleshakespeare.org/woodeno/

Directions to the Richmond Beach Community (Library) Park:
  1. From I5, take exit 176/NE 175th St and head west on NE 175th approximately .7 miles to Aurora Ave/WA-99.
  2. Turn RIGHT onto Aurora Ave/WA-99 and drive .5 mi to N 185th St.
  3. Turn LEFT onto N 185th St (the sharp left turn at the light) and follow 185th – after about one mile, the road turns into Richmond Beach Rd.
  4. Continue along Richmond Beach Rd to 21st Ave NW.
  5. Turn RIGHT on 21st Ave NW – the park will be on your left.
  6. Limited parking available in the Library lot and in the residential areas.

Ross Collado and Judith Perry

ShoreLake Arts Gallery is exhibiting a selection of works by painters Ross Collado and Judith Perry. See these works and the creations of other local artists during gallery hours: Tuesday – Saturday, Noon to 5pm. Located in the Town Center at Lake Forest Park. You can also view and purchase art in the online shop!

The ShoreLake Arts Gallery is not-for-profit and features changing art exhibits on the walls every 6 weeks, as well as jewelry, ceramics, glass, paper goods and more by over 100 local artists.

About the artists:

Divided We Stand by Ross Collado
Ross Collado

Ross Boa Collado identifies as Filipino-American and self-taught abstract expressionism painter living in Seattle. As early as 6 years old, his siblings, cousins and friends relied on him for anything that required creativity. He designed greeting cards and classroom visual aids with crayons and watercolors. In college, he studied Computer Science and worked in a related field for a while. His artistic process is highly intuitive. Each piece begins with an overall concept or idea, but what is truly unique is how the direction of the brushstrokes and colors that he uses builds an overall composition and evolves over time. The result is a one-of-a-kind piece that feels intentionally created for the owner and sparks conversation while in the room.

Currently, his works are on display and have been sold in several coffee shops in Seattle: Espresso Vivaci on Broadway, Capitol Hill and Yale Street in Downtown Seattle, Broadcast Coffee Roasters on Yesler Way for the month of October and November in 2021. "Green Flash '' (4ft x 5ft) is, a recent, commissioned work for an NGO fundraiser based in Portland Oregon and is now on display at his residence. "Six Feet By Eight Feet '' (20in x 20in) was featured in the September 2021 issue of Northwest Yachting. Seattle Refined featured Ross as Artist of the Week during the 3rd week of September 2021. He was also included in the 425 Magazine Holiday Gift Guide in December 2021.

Artist Statement

Making art for me is not therapeutic, but rather a series of intense moments. "It's like I am walking through a creative tunnel of exploding colors and ideas waiting to come to life through a brush stroke." My passion for acrylic painting took off in the midst of COVID-19 and at the heart of BLM protests in Capitol Hill in Seattle. "Nightfall," my first commissioned piece, was created in 2020 as cries of "Justice for George Floyd" echoed and a tear gas smell filled the area where I live.

Firmly holding on to Leonardo Da Vinci's famous quote; "Art is never finished, only abandoned.", I fuel my passion with equal fervor for travel and exploration of hiking trails leading to grand vistas and waterscapes. My never ending quest of finding beauty in everything and everywhere go hand in hand with my mission to represent beauty that moves the heart, mind and soul.

Koi Pond by Judith Perry

Judith Perry

Judith Perry is an award winning artist and a signature member of the Hawaii Watercolor Society and president of the Women Painters of Washington. She has studied at the finest Art Schools and continues learning from professional artist's workshops. Her style is typically bold and has been influenced by James Whistler with his high contrasts in value, Lucien Freud and his search for the character in figure work, and Mitch Albala for his treatment of the landscape. She prefers painting in a series of the same subject matter so there can be an in-depth presentation. It is a method of pulling the viewer in for a deeper understanding. After living many places from the east coast to Hawaii she is now living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. The lushness of natural geography is now a focus and involves a study by seasons, from the weed of winter to the reflections of the waters of Puget Sound in the summer. She is now giving workshops as well as private lessons.

Artist Statement

Growing up in the small town of Raymond I was directed to the pre college academic classes rather than the craft or skill classes. Art was more about reading artists' biographies until I entered college and took formal art classes. The professor's encouragement and my sense of peace and joy while painting led me to ongoing making and studying art.

My interests change and I waver back and forth regarding subject matter and materials. My advanced studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago focused on the figure. I still find it fascinating and draw and paint the figure for shows. Most galleries will not accept Nudes, but to me they are the ultimate landscape. My mediums vary. Watercolors were natural while living in Hawaii due to the colors and light. Landscapes in oil are a comfortable fit. But drawing with graphite, charcoal, colored pencil, pastel and vine charcoal are like an extension of my arm.

ShoreLake Arts Gallery Presents: Kuria Jorissen and Rachel Wold

ShoreLake Arts Gallery Presents:
Kuria Jorissen and Rachel Wold
April 6 - May 14, 2022

ShoreLake Arts Gallery is exhibiting a selection of works by Astrophotographer Kuria Jorissen and Abstract Painter Rachel Wold. See these works and the creations of other local artists during gallery hours: Tuesday – Saturday, Noon to 5pm. Located in the Town Center at Lake Forest Park. You can also view and purchase art in the online shop.

Galaxies at First Light
Kuria Jorissen

Kuria Jorissen

Artist Bio

Growing up, Kuria was always exploring, discovering, and learning. Whether that was exploring the great outdoors or simply expanding her knowledge of art, photography, and more, Kuria kept at it. With her close family and friends being creatives, Kuria grew up going to art shows, building her own art, and capturing the world with a camera at her hip. Over time, that camera kept evolving and upgrading. And she eventually worked her way through a Bachelor's Degree in Photography, with Astrophotography being the focus of her thesis. Graduating was just the start of Kuria's journey. Keeping the momentum going, she worked harder in learning the tools of her trade, and developing new techniques in the field and in the studio to bring her work to the next level. Alongside new techniques for capturing and editing photos, Kuria also researched planning tools, astronomy, and discovered the lesser known stories of the stars. What started as an interest in the outdoors and the night sky above us, evolved into something more for Kuria. It became a way to share the beautiful, night landscapes with the stars painted above. It became a way to communicate and tell lesser known stories of the stars. And it became a medium to encourage people to fight to preserve our national and state parks, and to push back against light pollution to preserve the dark skies.

Ocean of Stars
Kuria Jorissen
Artist Statement

Often traveling to far off wilderness areas, I do most of my work from midnight to 4 am. My work in astrophotography involves constantly learning, researching, and perseverance through many foiled attempts. The one lesson you learn quickly is to never trust the weather reports. I spend much of my time studying new methods, history, astronomy, and the cultures around lesser known stories of the stars.

Through my work, I seek to share the stories of the stars. To showcase the natural beauty that surrounds us. And to bring people to that quiet moment in the wild and show them the beauty of what lies outside. Through this, I also seek to educate and encourage the preservation of our natural lands and dark skies.

Fire and Ice
Rachel Wold
Rachel Wold

Artist Bio

Rachel Wold is an abstract artist based in Seattle, Washington. She grew up drawing, painting, and exploring the Pacific Northwest and finds solace and inspiration in nature. Although prolific early in life, Rachel fell out of a creative lifestyle in her mid-twenties after pursuing degrees and a career in science.

She works as an oceanographer at the University of Washington's Applied Physics Lab and has led research cruises throughout Washington waters. Ideas for artwork would occasionally surface but she didn't know where to start. After suffering first a miscarriage, then postpartum depression after her second child was born, she picked up an old sketchbook in search of emotional relief. Putting pen to paper again after a decade hiatus reignited her creative passion. She now makes time for her art practice around her fulfilling work and raising two small children.

I feel so optimistic
Rachel Wold

Artist Statement

My art is a form of therapy; I create what I feel, what I need. I use expressive abstraction to create a space for reflection, with the goal of engaging viewers on an emotional and visceral level. My paintings begin intuitively, with a few tones inspired by the world around me. I experiment with tactile textures, fluid splatters, mixing and moving, adding and subtracting as a conversation unfolds between the piece and myself. A dialog of exploration and curiosity.

I am interested in what happens at the interface of things, the moment of transition between opposing or parallel ideas, which is often represented in my work as lines or abstract marks. Lines can be interpreted visually as both a dividing and unifying device, and I encourage this duality. Dynamic gestures and moments of rest, loose layers and meticulously added ink are all part of the experience.

6th Annual Shoreline Short Short Film Festival ends on a high note

Wednesday, March 16, 2022

ShoreLake Arts and the Shoreline Film Office presented their annual celebration of Washington-made short films at the Shoreline Community College Theater on Saturday, March 5, 2022. More than 200 people turned out to celebrate local film in ShoreLake Arts’ first indoor event since November, 2019.

Jurors Tony Doupé (SCC Professor/SAG Actor), Vivian Hua (Northwest Film Forum Executive Director), Starla Sheen (Filmmaker, Edelman Communication Firm), Zubi Mohammed (Magnussen Media Group: Seattle and Los Angeles), Kira Sipler (screenwriter, producer, director, and assistant director), Deb Pralle (stage, screen, tv, radio actor and Group Content Director) selected 14 films made by Washington State filmmakers, all of which were made during the COVID-19 era.

Jeff Schick, Best Picture, and Sasquatch award winner, with event organizer Kevin Sheen

The Calling by Jeff Schick, a Seattle-based writer, director and filmmaker, won best picture. Schick began directing films in 2012, ultimately creating a film production company, Audio Video Room, where he currently serves as a creative director. This is the second SSSFF win for Schick, who won the People’s Choice award in 2020.

Aiwei Wu and Ray Cao (center) won the 2022 People’s Choice Award
A Weekend on Foxes Island directed by Aiwei Wu and Ray Cao won the 2022 People’s Choice Award. Aiwei Wu began making films during college. Wu’s first film won the jury award at the University of Michigan Campus MovieFest in 2019, kick-starting her filmmaking career.

After moving to Seattle, Wu co-founded the Avocado Highway Production with Ray Cao. Ray creates visual effects, designs graphics and props for live-action shorts and animations as well as serving as a scriptwriter.

Both the Best Film and People Choice awards come with a $1000 cash prize and the Sasquatch award. The Shoreline Short Short Film Festival supports emerging and developing filmmakers in Washington State and fosters appreciation of experimental and short filmmaking in our region.

Festival Director Kevin Sheen said, “This was a very special event for our organization, the communities we serve, and all of the participating filmmakers. It’s hard to believe, but this was our first indoor event in over two years.
"I’m very proud of the ShoreLake Arts staff for making this year the best one yet. And to the filmmakers, thank you all so much for continuing to produce amazing work and stories. It was such a fun group of films and people this year. Thank you!”
