Erik Amundsen

Artist Bio

Having lived abroad and traveled to 30 countries Erik is currently living in Newcastle, WA with his wife and 4 year old son. His main form of creative expression is flat lay nature photography, taking objects from nature and arranging them on a solid color background to express a fine art feel.

Erik operates under the name The Botanic Table of Elements, conjuring up images of order and categorization of the periodic table of elements but with the natural feel of botanicals. Other mediums include making inks and dyes from foraged material, watercolor painting, furniture making and block printing.

Artist Statement

While my art is typically classified as photography, to me the artistry lies in having the eye to recognize beauty, the creativity to reimagine it in the studio and the patience and technique to carry out my vision. In doing flat lay nature photography I take elements from nature and arrange them on a solid colored background in patterns and shapes. They are often accompanied by a short written reflection. I have arranged over 300 photos during the past 5 years.

The entire process is a meditation for me. First to wander in nature with the purpose of finding beautiful and interesting things. Then to let my mind play at creating a layout concept. Once I have an idea my hands take over, while my hands are occupied my mind is finally free to dive deep into thought. In this flow state my mind begins to process the things I have been experiencing recently. Emotions rise to the surface, new ideas take shape, and I often finish a piece both exhausted and renewed. These emotions and thoughts are simultaneously influencing what I am creating but also directed by what I am creating. It is a nonverbal conversation between my body and mind. My titles and reflections come out of the things I was ruminating on while creating them.

I love visiting new ecosystems and working with the natural elements of a place. It connects me to a physical location and the animals/people who subsisted off the native plants. The work is essentially a collaboration with nature, I collect things forged in wild places and highlight them. It is a deeply meaningful and spiritual practice for me. Many of the elements I work with (flowers, leaves) wilt quickly, I have only a few hours to work with them until they are visibly degraded. The pieces themselves are ephemeral and seasonal, it is only through photographing them that I can capture their moment in time.

Kristy Swanson
Kristy Swanson

Artist Bio

Kristy Swanson is an emerging artist working in encaustic, encaustic monoprints, and mixed media. Influenced by shapes and patterns found in both natural and urban environments, she creates subtle and meditative artwork using transparent layers of beeswax, pigments, hand pulled monoprints, and mark making, creating intimate impressions and visual fields that hold the feeling of place that she's experienced. She strives to make intangible experiences visible, aiming for a quiet and complex beauty, balancing simplicity of expression with rich sensory details. Kristy began painting in 2016 and is primarily self-taught. She has worked as both a hair colorist and as a master's level therapist, and threads of these careers inform her art: a love of color and beauty, as well as an interest in quiet reflection and introspection, show up in her artworks. In addition, she is an avid lover of nature, pursuing skiing, cycling, hiking, and gardening as time allows. She lives in Woodinville, WA.

Artist Statement

I draw my inspiration from the natural world. I'm fascinated by shapes, patterns, rhythm, repetition, and nuance that I see everywhere I look. I'm particularly drawn to tiny details that typically go unnoticed - the fractals of a leaf, the shifting patterns that wind creates on water, the multitude of colors found in a handful of sand. Inspired by the ordinary and the everyday, I respond to the little details in my environment, discovering beauty in the expected and the unexpected. My artwork references nature indirectly, conjuring images of landscape, or water, or stone, or flora, without being intentionally representational.

I strive for balance between two polarities: on the one hand I seek simplicity, clean lines, elegance, and calm; and on the other hand I want to create nuance and complexity within that spareness through the inclusion of texture, layers, and detail. I aim to achieve a quiet and complex beauty that balances simplicity and subtlety with rich sensory details.

Barry Roitblat
Barry Roitblat

Artist Bio

Barry creates functional works, hand-crafted from nature's treasures and specializes in hand turned bowls, pepper mills, and more, from exotic and embellished natural wood.

Based in Bellevue, Washington, Barry has been turning for about 16 years and has had pieces on display at the Bellevue Arts Museum, ShoreLake Arts Gallery, Revolution Gallery, Edward A. Dixon Gallery (Ohio), Maria V Howard Art Center (North Carolina) and other local and national venues.

Artist Statement

I am fascinated by the grand works of art created by “Mother Nature” and enjoy turning nature’s art to a human purpose. I delight in the beauty revealed as an apparently nondescript piece of wood becomes a polished, functional art-piece.

ShoreLake Arts Gallery presents Cheryl Brown and Jenna Brechbiel

Friday, January 7, 2022

Cheryl Brown and Jenna Brechbiel
January 5 - February 19, 2022

ShoreLake Arts Gallery is exhibiting a selection of works by Mixed-Media Collage Artist Cheryl Brown and Watercolor Artist Jenna Brechbiel.

See these works and the creations of other local artists during gallery hours: Tuesday – Saturday, Noon to 5pm. Located in Town Center at Lake Forest Park. You can also view and purchase art in the online shop.

The ShoreLake Arts Gallery is not-for-profit and features changing art exhibits on the walls every six weeks, as well as jewelry, ceramics, glass and more by over 100 local artists.

Cheryl Brown
Artist Bio

I am my mother’s daughter. Watching her experiment with fiberglass, knitting, sauerkraut, new culinary creations, painting and more, gave me the desire to try new things and create. For me, the passion for planning a project and collecting just the right papers, fabrics and cast-off items for a project is as fulfilling as its completion. Thus, I have partially formed ideas in my head, many supplies for unfinished projects and many new things to try on my calendar.

My nest is empty, but I still work full time, my art fills in the gaps. I enjoy doing summer festivals and meeting other artists and art lovers. I am looking forward to retirement and more time to try new things and visit new places!

Artist Statement

I work in the medium of collage enjoying the many tactile benefits of the art form that give me permission to collect, to tear, to touch, to play. I use a combination of handmade and manufactured papers and re-purposed materials, always looking for that perfect something to add an element of surprise and whimsey into my art.

I have always been fascinated with old maps, books, sheet music, scraps of paper and fabric, wrappers and ribbons, and have amassed quite a collection on my own, as well as from the collectors of my work.

Looking deeper at what is mundane or ‘normal’ and presenting it in a new and surprising way is the goal of my work. In my “Common Bird” series, the crow or raven is simply a black bird that is seen everywhere to the point of being at times, a nuisance, but upon closer examination displays an incredible intelligence, curiosity and many human-like traits.

Jenna Brechbiel
Artist Bio

Jenna Brechbiel is a self taught watercolorist and has been teaching watercolor for the past six years. She has had the privilege of teaching at many wonderful locations such as Bellevue College, South Seattle Community College and Daniel Smith in Seattle (current).

Artist Statement

“You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star.”
― Friedrich Nietzsche

As a creative watercolor artist, Jenna strives to create beauty out of the chaos. Jenna’s paintings are created by vibrant washes of watercolor mixing together to create unique and unpredictable combinations. Then she molds and shapes the image and slowly builds while still highlighting the chaotic first layers. Life is unpredictable, live free.. paint free.

Now on sale at the Shorelake Arts Gallery in LFP: The Woman Who

Sunday, October 17, 2021

Local artist, cartoonist, illustrator and educator Margaret Hartley responded creatively to the pandemic lockdown.

During our first lockdown I started a weekly cartoon and sent it out to family and friends.
"The Woman Who" is coping with being confined to her home with her partner and cat.
Her weird, funny and sad reactions really resonated with my readers, and I decided to turn my one page cartoons into a zine.

"The Woman Who" is now on sale at the Shorelake Arts Gallery in Lake Forest Park, off the lower lobby of Town Center, intersection of Bothell and Ballinger Way.

The Woman Who is a fun read and a great way to support our local arts group, Shorelake Arts.

More about Margaret:

Her cartoon strip "Moira" ran for seven years in More Magazine, Auckland New Zealand.  I created another strip  “Hiccups” for Seattle’s Child and L.A. Parent.

You can see more of her work at instagram.com/margarethartley_art/

New show at ShoreLake Arts Gallery features Ben Groff and Lee Harper

Tuesday, October 12, 2021

Ben Groff and Lee Harper
October 6 - November 13, 2021

ShoreLake Arts Gallery is exhibiting a selection of works by Oil Painter Ben Groff and Photographer Lee Harper. See these works and the creations of other local artists during gallery hours: Tuesday – Saturday, Noon to 5pm. You can also view and purchase art in the online shop!

The ShoreLake Arts Gallery is not-for-profit and features changing art exhibits on the walls every 6 weeks, as well as jewelry, ceramics, glass and more by over 100 local artists.

Ben Groff
Artist Bio

I was born in Pennsylvania, growing up there and among the little hills of Rockland County, New York. I moved to Seattle after college, later to Lynnwood, and have lived here ever since, enjoying a long career as a nurse at Virginia Mason Hospital. My interests have included hiking, mountaineering, and world travel, from which I draw most of my images. However my deepest concern has always been pan-artistic, spanning music, photography, art, and literature; I have been a fiction writer with many published stories. I am married with two grown children and one lovely granddaughter.

Artist Statement

From an early age, I drew pictures in pencil, continuing into my mature years. When I finally came to painting in oils, this emphasis on clarity of line and form carried on into the new medium and I found myself to be by nature a realistic artist. But realism must never be an end in itself; rather the brush must adapt itself to the object and the object to the brush so that a deeper sense of the reality of the scene can emerge. Above all I seek to work with heightened color and light to express the spiritual essence that I find in that sudden, transitory moment of illumination the image contains, making it permanent.

Lee Harper
Artist Bio

My foray into the world of photography began with taking daily snaps on my iPhone as a way to combat the rainy and dark Seattle winters. Next was my “gateway camera”, a point and shoot. From there it was game on and I was addicted!

In 2017, I completed the Summer Intensive Program at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Montana. I try to get out as often as I can, sometimes to my front yard, and sometimes for further adventures, like watching the snow geese in Skagit.

I fell in love with the art of printing. Watching my art come to life is as enjoyable as taking photos. I got sick of buying cheap frames to put my art in, and decided I would print and mount my photos on wood. A friend offered to cut the wood for me, allowing me to make art of all sizes. The smallest are 2 inches square, and are my favorite to make. It’s like shrinky dink art!

I have exhibited in several group shows at community art galleries, and individual shows at local coffee shops, bars, and eateries and festivals in Seattle and on Camano Island. This past summer I participated in two pop-up art walks in Phinney and Broadview. It was so much fun to share my art with my neighbors (from a safe distance of course!). Art makes me happy and photography helped me keep my sanity during the pandemic.

Artist Statement - City Critters

I enjoy taking photos of city critters – squirrels, crows, pigeons, turtles and more. They are curious, brave, scrappy and resourceful. And they make me smile. Given their city environment, they are often pretty used to people, and make great subjects. I like doing intimate portraits of them, with a focus on their eyes, their little paws, or their beaks. Most of the animals in this show live in Seattle – at the beach, the Ballard Locks, my front yard, or other local natural areas. I hope you enjoy the city critters and that they make you smile too.

Call to Artists
2022 ShoreLake Arts Gallery Rotating Exhibits

Deadline: October 31, 2021

ShoreLake Arts, a not-for-profit organization, is looking for local artists to show in 2022 at our gallery in Lake Forest Park, WA.

Our 5-6 week rotating exhibits feature two artists with each person showing on approximately nine feet of wall space. The gallery schedule is set on a yearly basis. The gallery is also a gift shop with artist-made small works and jewelry. Applying for small works is a different process.

See the application on our website for more information: shorelakearts.org

Artists are invited to submit the following:
  • Brief bio
  • Artist’s statement
  • Link to website address (if applicable)
  • 5 digital images (as attachments only – No ZIP files) that reflect a cohesive body of work with an image list that includes title, medium, size and price

Please submit all of the above in one email with the images being the only attachments to: gallery@shorelakearts.org

Submission Guidelines:
  • We show local, Pacific Northwest artists only. All work must be hand delivered – no shipped work will be accepted.
  • We prefer showing artists that haven’t had a show at the gallery in the past two years. All work shown in the gallery must be original, for sale and not shown in the gallery before.
  • Commission on sold work is 50% with a maximum commission of $80. Everything priced at $160 retail or higher has a commission of $80 per piece.
  • Work must be no larger than 36”x36”, including the frame.
  • Work does not have to be the images submitted as long as it is similar in theme, style, medium and size.
  • All work must be wired and ready for hanging.
  • We are looking for a cohesive body of work as it shows better in our smaller space. All media is considered.

ShoreLake Arts Gallery is located inside, on the lower level of the Town Center at Lake Forest Park: 17171 Bothell Way NE. We encourage you to stop by and view the space.

2022 Application Deadline: October 31, 2021

ShoreLake Arts Battle of the Bands ends on a high note

Monday, August 16, 2021

There was something for everyone at the Battle of the Bands from pop ballads to driving rock.

What an incredible turnout from the community! Over the course of three nights of amazing local musicians and performances, there were 1,200+ guests who came out to support the bands and ShoreLake Arts at Pfingst Animal Acres Park on Saturday, August 14, 2021. Thank you so much to all of you for making it a week to remember!

This was our second year having the ShoreLake Battle of the Bands, but our first in-person version of it. The highlights were many, including a beer garden sponsored by Monka Brewing Co., pizza and Korean BBQ food trucks, and musician Q and A’s on stage with emcee Sasha Cousineau. Of course all of this was capped off with six wonderful performances by such talented local musicians. The future is bright!

The Jurors. Photo from ShoreLake Arts

Speaking of wonderful performances, the group of jurors had the difficult task of narrowing it down to two winners. Robert Lang from Robert Lang Studios in Shoreline presented the 1st place award and Scott Markley from Annex Room Studio presented the runner-up award. Thank you to Robert Lang, Tina Lang, Scott Markley, Dr. Jonathan Booker, Jesse Field, Alex Donka, and E. Pruitt.

First place winners CANNxN. Photo from ShoreLake Arts

Congratulations to the 1st Place Winner of the 2021 ShoreLake Battle of the Bands! CANNxN (pronounced Cannon) gave the city of Lake Forest Park a stellar performance weaving through their synthy and spacey songs, anchored by vivid lyrics and vocals. Undeniably catchy!

Runner up Halley Greg. Photo by ShoreLake Arts

And congratulations to the runner-up! Halley Greg gave us a powerful performance accompanied by incredibly written lyrics, guitar parts, and backing vocals. They left an everlasting impression in just 15 minutes. What a treat for us all!

They are getting $1,000 in cash and a livestream event at the Annex Room Studio.

Thank you again to all of the participating bands this year! A big round of applause to Eric Blu and the Soul Revue, Halley Greg, Brian James and the Great Unknown, Living With A Bear, Cousin Wolf, Sam and the Savages, Your Downstairs Neighbors, CANNxN, Aurora Avenue, and Stargazy Pie.
