Artist Statement

It has been my observation that there is frequently a disconnect between who we believe a person to be and who they are. The content of each of my pieces reflects upon this as well as explores emotional pain, vulnerability and strength primarily using the female form.

My work is influenced by numerous things, but I am particularly interested in the things that people hide. In the past, I have dealt with social anxiety and the pitfalls that came with feeling unseen and misunderstood. As a result, I was often reserved or prickly in countenance in order to protect myself, hiding who I was and how I felt. My paintings are largely influenced by this idea of ‘hiding’ except vulnerability and emotional pain is revealed rather than concealed. The emotional qualities of my paintings are contrasted with contained or neutral poses as if the women are withholding themselves.

I explore the above themes in a variety of ways. Deliberate formal choices such as composition and color palette are heavily considered. I use posture and hints of text to further convey emotional implications. Additionally, I focus on human connection as it pertains to the eyes. Eyes are an important facet of how humans relate to others and are firmly rooted to ideas surrounding expression of emotion and identity. In western culture, eye contact is associated with honesty and confidence—which acts in dichotomy to my ideas of hiding and revelation. As such, I alter the eyes of my figures in many of my pieces through application of paint or exclude them through formal and compositional decisions, thereby changing how the viewer relates to the piece. This methodology is used to meditate on the fact that people are often unseen and/or misinterpreted.

Additionally, I have incorporated the idea of completeness in my work. Often, those undergoing an emotional ordeal tend to see what they lack rather than what they have and as a result feel incomplete. They long for qualities they recognize in others and wish they had. In my experience, this is a very real part of pain that people feel. I approach this concept through the juxtaposition of substance and detail versus the degradation, simplification and/or absence of form in areas of the figure as formal attributes.

My passion for live music began back in high school when Rock and Roll was at its beginning.

It was an exciting time, and I started taking my camera with me. Back in the early days, the bands didn’t care about cameras. Later, when they started to try to keep out our cameras, we smuggled them in. It was very easy to get them in, taking the photos was another matter.

Later in my career, I started to get photo passes from a media source. The bands gave the media a chance to shoot for the first 3 songs. That is where I got the idea of “The first 3 songs, Rock and Roll at 125th of a second” for my show.

When you only have about 5-10 mins to get a shot, you really have to concentrate. The big problem with shooting the first 3 songs is that most bands are just getting warmed up when they kick you out. The rush for me is trying to get the shot within the time constraints; my eyes are always looking for that shot. In the early days, when we were shooting film, you had to pay attention to your exposure number. You didn’t want to run out of film at the wrong moment. Digital solved that problem.

In recent years I have expanded my photographic subjects to include birds and landscapes. My wife and I are avid hikers.

I do miss live music and I am waiting impatiently for it to come back.

I hope you like my images.

2021 Shoreline Short Short Film Festival

Tuesday, March 16, 2021

2021 Shoreline Short Short Film Festival

Saturday, April 24, 7pm-11pm

The Shoreline Short Short Film Festival is back for its fifth season. This time in the form of a pop-up drive-in! Join ShoreLake Arts and your community for a special night of celebrating the art of the short film. Get your ticket today!

Filmmakers from all over Washington have submitted their “short short” films and you’re invited to see the selected films on Saturday, April 24, 7pm, located at Shorewood High School (enter the parking lot on 175th). In the case of extreme rain or high winds, we have two backup dates reserved, #1 Sunday, April 25th, #2 Sunday, May 9th.

Car arrival is from 7-8pm, and the program will run from 8:15-11pm.

The Shoreline Short Short Film Festival aims to support emerging and developing filmmakers in Washington State and encourage appreciation for the art of filmmaking in our community.

We're excited to bring this single night short film festival back to the community! It's important to ensure that our local filmmakers (and artists) have an opportunity to get their work shown to a live audience again. Truly nothing beats the energy and spirit of a live audience. Even from our bubbles and the seats of our cars, it's still a very impactful evening. All watching and reacting at the same time. This group of filmmakers exemplify the very belief that creativity can't be quarantined.

The evening will showcase a juried selection of 3-12 minute films made by emerging and developing filmmakers working in our community. The top filmmakers will be honored with handmade Golden Sasquatch statues, cash prizes, NW Camera Co. rental discounts, and goodies from Trader Joe’s! Plus, audience members can vote for their favorite filmmaker to win the People’s Choice Award!

Categories include General Films (Drama), Comedy, Music Video, Animation, and Student Film. We had 61 total submissions this year! A big thank you to everyone who submitted this year. This was the most competitive and diverse group of film submissions in our 5 years.

All films are unrated and a select few contain adult/mature content. Viewer discretion is advised.

New show at ShoreLake Arts Gallery in Town Center

Exhibiting February 24 - April 3, 2021

ShoreLake Arts Gallery is exhibiting a selection of works by Multi-Media Collaborative Artists, Cindra Avery and Melissa Newell. Cindra Avery and Melissa Newell

Artist Statement

The work for “Collaborative by Nature” represents a six-year creative collaboration focused on the natural world. The impetus for this work was based on our shared interests in gardening, birds, collage and mixed media design.

Groupings and themes emerged organically. We passed pieces back and forth until both of us felt we had fully explored the material, the surfaces, and finally, the meaning. When we first started this experiment in creative collaboration, we were often surprised and a bit unnerved by the work we received and briefly left with “What am I supposed to do?”

Once we each moved past this initial discomfort, we found we each had the ability to let go of any sense of preciousness and instead to trust the process. Over time our pieces and work evolved, with each of us responding to the marks, color use and forms as we pushed each other in new directions.

Now there is less anxiety over how to respond, but genuine excitement as we take on new challenges. We continue to draw on both the strengths and weaknesses of each other. As we continue to explore new ideas and directions, we have also discovered the joy of working in the studio together for some part of the process.

These sessions have become particularly generative with the feeling of improvisational art while we move about the studio, wearing our COVID masks, socially distanced but totally immersed in the body of work we are creating. Currently we have well over 100 collaborative pieces.

A future post-COVID dream is to expand the collaborative experience by inviting artist friends, family, and former students to participate. Our belief is the creative process is most fully realized and celebrated through collaboration.

Milky Way by Bill Ray

Bill Ray

Artist Bio

Bill is an award winning photographer and instructor whose photos have been in juried art shows like the Edmonds Arts Festival and Schack Art Center Everett. He is a lifelong photographer, starting with the Ansel Adams Zone System as a teenager.

An early Photoshop user from scanned film, he switched to full digital in 2006, delighted to find his arts avocation had converged with his computer engineering profession. He is an active member of ArtistsConnect Edmonds, Puget Sound Camera Club and Seattle Photographic Society.

Artist Statement

I first became passionate about photography doing black and white darkroom work as a teenager, trying to make my pictures look like those of Ansel Adams after taking mine from “above his tripod holes.” Later, the great color nature photographers like Robert Ketchum, Elliot Porter, and Art Wolfe provided inspiration, plus Henri Cartier-Bresson for capturing the decisive moment.

Our eyes generally see more than a photo can display. We can concentrate on part of a scene while staying aware of the totality, then instantly shift focus. The eye can handle a wider range of light and dark in one glance than a camera. I love those times when a photo rises above the technical challenges to capture the beautiful miracle of our world -- plus the times when the camera sees glories beyond our eyes, like the 200 billion stars in our Milky Way galaxy.

I believe there are deep spiritual reasons why natural beauty stimulates the pleasure circuits hard-wired into our brains. It’s a clue there must be reasons why the Universe exists at all. It reminds us that “dominion over” means to be responsible stewards of the planet. My intent is to refresh a sense of connection beyond humanity’s increasingly urbanized human-centered worldview.

Bathtub Lakes by Suze Woolf

Suze Woolf

Artist Bio

Suze Woolf studied ceramics and printmaking at the University of Washington. An early adopter of computer graphics, her career has included print and interface design. Though known as a watercolorist, she explores a wide range of media from painting, paper-casting, artist books and pyrography to installation – sometimes all together.

She has exhibited throughout the Pacific Northwest but also in Utah, British Columbia, Maryland, California, Colorado, Oklahoma and Washington DC. Her work is in regional public collections as well as many private ones. She has curated a large travelling exhibit, juried competitions for municipalities and artist organizations, and contributed work to non-profit fundraising.

She has received grants, stipends and exhibits from Artist Trust, Shunpike, The Entrada Institute, Zion Natural History Association, the Museum of Northwest Art and the San Juan Islands Museum of Art. She has been an artist in residence in Zion, Glacier, Capitol Reef and North Cascades National Parks.

She was a test artist resident at the Grand Canyon Trust’s remote Kane Ranch. 2019 will be her seventh year in Zion’s annual plein air invitational. She has also been an invited resident at art colonies such as the Banff Centre, the Vermont Studio Center, Willowtail Springs, Jentel Foundation and Playa Summer Lake.

Artist Statement - Western Landscapes

Wallace Stegner originally called the national parks our best idea: “National parks are the best idea we ever had. Absolutely American, absolutely democratic, they reflect us at our best rather than our worst.” I’ve spent a lot of time all over the West exploring their landscapes. Besides my sheer joy at being in the midst of such visual feasts, the way I learn a place is by painting it.

I’ve been Artist-in-Residence in a number of parks: North Cascades, Glacier, Zion, Grand Canyon, Capitol Reef. I’ve also been an art colony resident in Banff, AB (between three Canadian national parks), at Willowtail Springs, CO (next to Mesa Verde), the Vermont Studio Center, the Jentel Foundation in Wyoming and Playa Summer Lake in Oregon. Each time I fall in love with a new landscape. But close observation also makes me aware of the many issues facing those lands. My joy in their beauty becomes a goad to serious work about the threats to them.
