Aegis of Shoreline, a senior care community that offers assisted living for seniors with light- to high-level care needs, surprised their residents with a holiday gift of an Eldergrow garden.

John Young, General Manager, partnered with Eldergrow, a new Seattle company, which offers mobile indoor gardens and therapeutic horticulture programming. Young presented the gift to residents for the holidays,

“I wanted to get a meaningful gift for our residents that would provide joy, as well as wellness benefits. Many of our residents garden and when I saw how the garden would be used during interactive sessions, I knew it would be a special gift.”

The finished garden was presented that evening to residents.

Orla Concannon, Founder of Eldergrow, developed the mobile, indoor garden and therapeutic programming for elders so that they could commune with nature year-round.

“Eldergrow’s indoor gardening provides sensory stimulation, improves motor skills, and a new sense of purpose as residents nurture their garden.”

A Matter of Balance
New Matter of Balance class - April 1 to May 27 - at the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Senior Center

Because of a generous grant from the Shoreline Fire Department, the Senior Center is able to conduct the acclaimed Matter of Balance classes free to the seniors in our community.

The goal of the class is help seniors who are fearful of falling feel more confident and feel good about getting out and enjoying more activities.

Many seniors experience fear of falling and restrict their activities. A Matter of Balance class includes:

  • Managing concern about Falls,
  • Emphasizes practical strategies to reduce fear and increase activity levels.

Participants learn to view falls and fear of falls as controllable:

  • Set realistic goals to increase activity,
  • Change their environment to reduce fall risk factors
  • Exercise to increase strength and balance.
  • Class includes 1 hour of exercise and 1 hour of discussion; with breaks.

This program was developed by the Royal Center at Boston University and is nationally recognized as an outstanding program that promotes fall prevention.

This session of Matter of Balance is running for 9 days instead of the regular 8.

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services is conducting a special study of seniors 66+ who are beginning an exercise program. A survey will be taken on the first day of class (April 1). All participants who take the survey will be given $15 as a thank you for their time and effort.

Pre-register at the front desk of the Senior Center located on the Shoreline Center campus, 18560 1st Ave NE or call 206-365-1536. Class is limited to 15.

Volunteer drivers needed for Senior Services

Friday, March 13, 2015

Drive a shuttle - or your car

Volunteer drivers are needed for Senior Services' Transportation program.

Using either their own vehicles or agency vans (the Hyde Shuttles), volunteer drivers help ensure that older adults and folks with disabilities can get to live-giving and enriching activities.

Unfortunately, the program does not have enough drivers to meet the demand for transportation from vulnerable residents of our Shoreline community.

If you have the “drive” to help others, a clean driving record and some daytime availability, call (206) 748-7588, email Hilary or visit the webpage to find out more.

You can also read stories about the program on its blog. Help people in need get “on the road” to fuller, healthier lives!

November is National Care Provider Month

Navigating the Elder Care Maze

“I need to find assisted living for my mom”
“My father-in-law doesn’t drive and can’t use Metro.
He needs information on transportation options”
“I’m providing regular care for my adult son, who has a disability. I need help! Who do I call?!

Do those questions sound familiar? Finding help for an older adult or a loved one can be a daunting task. Fortunately, two local programs provide guidance in navigating the maze of community and government programs:

Senior Information and Assistance (1-888-4ELDERS) is the go-to number for anyone age 60+ and their family members who needs help identifying resources that meet their needs.

The King County Caregiver Support Network provides guidance to unpaid primary caregivers of adults of any age who are unable to care for themselves, typically family members or close friends or neighbors.

Two local programs provide help in navigating the Elder Care maze

Monday, September 15, 2014

Navigating the Elder Care Maze
“I need to find assisted living for my mom.”
“My father-in-law doesn’t drive and can’t use Metro. He needs information on transportation options.”
“I'm providing regular care for my adult son, who has a disability. I need help!”
“Who do I call?!”
Do those questions sound familiar? Finding help for an older adult— yourself or a loved one— can be a daunting task. Fortunately, two local programs provide guidance in navigating the maze of community and government programs:

  • Senior Information and Assistance (1-888-4ELDERS) is the go-to number for anyone age 60+ and their family members who needs help identifying resources that meet their needs.
  • The King County Caregiver Support Network provides guidance to unpaid primary caregivers of adults of any age who are unable to care for themselves—typically family members or close friends or neighbors.

Help by filling out a survey

Aging and Disability Services (ADS)—the Area Agency on Aging for Seattle-King County—currently funds both programs. In the coming year, services may be enhanced to help a broader range of older adults and individuals with disabilities plan to live independently in the community.

As part of that process, ADS would like community input. Please take a few moments to complete an online survey that will help with these important decisions. The survey is open through September 30. Here’s the link.

You read it right. 80 years married.

Vern and Shirley Greet, age 99 and 97, recently celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary at their home at Aegis of Shoreline on 1st Ave NE.

The Culinary Team reserved the special table for two, and served champagne with raspberries and an amazing homemade Raspberry Lemon Curd Shortcake!

Raspberry Lemon Curd Shortcake
one for each
When asked what the secret to being married for 80 years is Vern thought for a bit and said, “Be very patient.  It takes a lot of love and never lose your love light.”  Shirley answered quickly and said, “I keep my mouth shut and try not to be too critical.  I also agree with Vern to be very patient and, of course, a lot of love.”

The Greers owned and operated Greer Lumber on 85th in Greenwood for 47 years before they closed December 31, 1999.

They have lived at Aegis of Shoreline Assisted Living for the past three years.

Matter of Balance class will be starting in September

Tuesday, August 26, 2014

Toshiko Aramaki

A Fall Matter of Balance class will be starting on Wednesday, September 10 and continue through to October 29 at the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center. This is an 8 hour class, meeting from 12:30-2:30pm. The class includes one hour of exercise and one hour of discussion and includes breaks. There is no fee for this important class for seniors; funding is provided by the Shoreline Fire Department. Toshiko Aramaki is the trained and experienced instructor.

It has been found that seniors who continue to exercise and learn about how to prevent falls are more likely to be able to stay healthy and at home. Many seniors experience fear of falling and restrict their activities. The advantage of a Matter of Balance class includes managing concerns about falls and emphasizes practical strategies to reduce fear and increase activity levels.

Participants learn to view falls and fear of falls as controllable by setting realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors and learn exercises to increase strength and balance.

The program was developed by the Royal center at Boston University and is nationally recognized as an outstanding program that promotes fall prevention.
