Recruiting middle and high school students for Letter to Elders

Friday, September 4, 2020

Opportunity for youth to connect
with Senior Citizens through the
written word.

The past 6 months has created tremendous challenges for our aging population as most services and programs moved to online access.

The reality is that many seniors do not have access to computers and those that do, are not all at the technological level to download programs such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom.

This transfers to cell phone use as well as FaceTime and similar programs remain a mystery to a population that is more comfortable with developing their relationships in person, through US Postal mail and accessing entertainment through television, not internet.

Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center is busy developing means of reaching seniors in their homes, to reduce the ill effects that social isolation has created.

With this in mind, we are most fortunate to have two students, brother and sister team of Ishan and Ishita Bansal, step forward and create an amazing new program called Letter to Elders

Ishan and Ishita have developed a registration process for middle and high school students to apply to become pen pals to seniors in our community. In one week, they have acquired nine participants, eagerly awaiting their assigned individual that will be provided through the senior center.

The following is the recruitment ad that Ishan shared with classmates returning to school:

“Do you want to give back to the community but only have time to offer? Do you want to help support and bring joy to the senior community?
"As the global pandemic continues, there are seniors across the country without loved ones to call and cannot visit them in these conditions.
"For these seniors, isolation is just as hard and is becoming a growing problem. Letters to Elders is an organization connecting these seniors with youth across the area, building connections and ending isolation one letter at a time.
"Volunteers get to intimately connect with seniors, learn new things, and earn service hours, all through a traditional pen pal program (either letter or email).”

If you know of a student that would like to participate, have them contact Ishan and Ishita directly or register HERE or contact us at lettertoelders@gmail.com

If you know an adult that would benefit from a new friendship, one in which regular letters will be exchanged, have them contact the senior center at 206-365-1536. All contact will be via US Postal Service only, no in-person visits and students are mandated to refrain from sharing any contact information.

Senior Center: Staying cool during the heat wave

Tuesday, August 18, 2020

BASIC STEPS for STAYING COOL DURING THE HEATWAVE

In past years, Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center has been a drop-in for those needing to escape the heat of their homes during extremely warm weather during the summer months.

Unfortunately, we are not able to open our doors for drop-in visits as we operate rigid health guidelines to protect the integrity of all of our current nutrition programs and services.

However, we encourage you to incorporate some of the tips listed below as you battle the heat.

We also ask that you be mindful of your senior neighbors. If you do not see activity around their homes during this time, please check on them and share how you stay cool. Many homes in Shoreline do not have central air and can heat up into the 90s.

  • Turn on fans
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Stay in the coolest part of their home
  • Go to a nearby park and sit under a shade tree if they are ambulatory
  • Do not overexert yourself with household chores, exercise regimes, etc.
  • Take shorter walks with your dog, he/she will be fine as they are hot as well
  • Reduce intake of hot beverages, including coffee (add ice if you must have your cup a day)
  • Close blinds during the day

Some things you can do to help out a neighbor in coping with the heat:
  • Loan them a fan
  • Drop a case of water at their doorstep with a note listing your name and phone number
  • Drop off a bag of ice
  • Offer to walk their dog for them; be sure to provide them your name and phone number
  • Offer to drive them to the grocery store and carry their packages for them
  • If you have concerns about a neighbor, knock on their door but have a sign that they can read through the window, that states your name, address and phone number and simply say “Are you OK?”
Strangers at doorsteps can be very intimidating but a sign allows them to take whatever precautions they have a need to do, before opening the door to a stranger.

Ida Culver House Broadview held special Socially-Distant Graduation Ceremony for its graduating high school seniors on staff

Friday, June 26, 2020

Photos courtesy ERA Living

Era Living hosted a special socially-distant graduation ceremony for its graduating high school seniors on staff at the Ida Culver House Broadview on Tuesday June 9, 2020.

With residents able to gather on their balconies to watch and/or livestream the event via their televisions, Ida Culver House Broadview leadership honored the staff who have been instrumental in taking care of elderly residents throughout the pandemic while adapting to online classes.

The outdoor ceremony included celebrations and remarks in recognition of student staff members achievements and contributions to the retirement community during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Eleven high school seniors who are graduating from Shorecrest and Ingraham High Schools were honored.

In this special outdoor ceremony, members of Ida Culver House Broadview’s leadership team and the President of the Resident Council shared inspirational words and honor their accomplishments.

The students donned graduation caps and were surprised with a gift from the residents. Residents gathered on their balconies to participate in the celebration from afar, and the event was livestreamed on resident televisions and the Ida Culver House Broadview Facebook page so that families and friends of the graduating seniors could watch the ceremony.

Speakers and participants included:
  • Ida Culver House Broadview Executive Director, Brittany Bell
  • Ida Culver House Broadview Resident Council President, Ruth Scott
  • Ida Culver House Broadview Dining Services Coordinator, Miles Mitrush
  • Ida Culver House Broadview Food Services Director, Brian Hedlund
  • Eleven graduating seniors from Shorecrest and Ingraham High Schools
  • Other Ida Culver House Broadview staff members
  • Residents of Ida Culver House Broadview

The COVID-19 pandemic has turned everyone’s lives upside down and has created some unique challenges for graduating seniors who are missing out on the usual pomp and circumstance of reaching this important milestone in their lives.

This special group of seniors has not only risen to the challenge of adapting to online classes, but they have also been instrumental in taking care of our elderly residents throughout this pandemic.

Their jobs have shifted from serving residents in a dining room and other traditional server responsibilities to delivering meals to approximately 300 residents’ doorsteps each day, delivering celebratory cakes for resident birthdays and other special occasions, helping sanitize surfaces throughout the building, delivering daily communications to residents and more.

Ida Culver House Broadview is grateful to have them on their team and couldn’t be prouder of how they have all stepped up to the new challenges faced every day. This celebration seeks to recognize them for their achievements at school and at work.

Ida Culver House Broadview is located at 12505 Greenwood Ave N, Seattle, WA 98133

Currently they employ 28 students and 13 per diems students.

Three or four of their graduating seniors will be leaving regular employment for college. Most will continue to work at Ida Culver, with the rest of them are going per diems and working only for holidays and summer time.

Ida Culver House Broadview has fared well in the COVID-19 pandemic. Only one resident tested positive for COVID-19 and has since fully recovered.
They tested broadly one time on May 12, and have an additional round of broad testing of all residents and staff members scheduled for next week.

In total, they have received 317 negative test results for residents and 180 negative test results for employees.

Op-Ed: A heartfelt thank you to the City of Shoreline from the Senior Center

City of Shoreline Emergency Community Response Fund
Grants $50,000 to Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center

On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers and Shoreline seniors, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to the City of Shoreline for financial assistance in the sum of $50,000 through the City of Shoreline Emergency Community Response Fund.

Your generosity will allow us to continue the Essential Services that we have been providing during this challenging time. Seniors are being firmly guided to stay at home and have adhered to this guidance. In doing so, they’ve encountered serious challenges which we quickly recognized and chose to address.

We’ve been able to continue to provide daily hot nutritious meals delivered to their homes, provide a week’s worth of frozen meals at a time, provide a bag of groceries weekly, as well as assist with errands such as pharmaceutical pickups.

Confining oneself to their home when living alone not only develops feelings of isolation, but can foster fear and anxiety.

Your funding will allow us to continue our Mental Health Services in which seniors can telecommunicate with a mental health counselor, resourcing tips on coping with isolation. Our staff and a select group of skilled volunteers, make hundreds of telephone calls per week, just to say hello and see if individuals have any needs.

During a crisis such as COVID-19, added costs rise, overhead expenses remain the same and revenue halts for a 501(c)3 non-profit organization such as Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center.

The City of Shoreline foresaw the needs of our community, quickly creating an emergency fund to ensure that critical services such as ours would have some resources to continue the much needed work that each of us performs.

We are very grateful for a council and city administration that has been very proactive in all phases of Emergency Management. We deeply appreciate your support of our work and the welfare of the seniors of Shoreline.

Sincerely,

Theresa LaCroix, Director
Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center

Sunday, January 19, 2020

Senior and Disabled Property Tax Relief information session, Friday, January 24, 2020, 2 - 3pm at the Shoreline Library Large Meeting Room 345 NE 175th St, Shoreline 98155

State law provides two tax benefit programs for senior citizens and the disabled: property tax exemptions and property tax deferrals.

Yet more than 26,000 qualified seniors and disabled persons have yet to register for the exemption, and only 1 in 100 of those eligible for deferrals are currently enrolled.

  • Are you one of the 26,000 qualified seniors and disabled King County homeowners who have yet to register for the current Senior Property Tax Exemption?
  • Would you like to learn about the new income eligibility rules for 2020 property tax relief?
  • Would you like to learn when and how you can apply?

King County Tax Assessor John Wilson will explain the new eligibility requirements for Senior/Disabled Property Tax Relief that went into effect in January of 2020 (SB5160). The new law sets the King County income exemption limit at $58,423 for income earned in 2019.

Learn how the Senior Citizen / Disabled Exemption works, who might qualify, what to do if you think you might qualify, and where to get help with the application.

  • Assisting with special projects
  • Providing support in libraries

Volunteers must undergo a Washington State Patrol background check and be consistent and reliable.

Power of One is a partnership of the Shoreline-LFP Senior Center and the Shoreline School District. This well-regarded program started in 1996 as a way to get senior members of the community involved in their neighborhood schools, and continues today as a model volunteer program.

Wilson then delivered brief remarks, focused on the expansion of the state’s property tax relief program

“As I begin this new term, I am pleased to let taxpayers know we'll be launching a county-wide effort starting in just a few weeks to enroll as many eligible taxpayers as possible into the property tax relief program,” said Wilson.
“The old economic threshold of $40,000 will increase in King County by almost 50% -- to $58,423. This change should open the door to thousands more seniors, the disabled, and those injured former vets being eligible for help with their property taxes.”
Wilson concluded, “During this second term, I will rededicate myself to our efforts to remain one of the best-run agencies of local government, delivering for taxpayers and fighting for a more progressive, fair, and equitable tax system ”

John Wilson was first elected in 2015, and re-elected without opposition in the November 2019 election.
