Positive aging awards for three local women

Wednesday, July 11, 2018

Three local women were given awards at Sound Generations’ June 20th Inspire Positive Aging Awards Luncheon.

Sound Generations, formerly Senior Services, is the parent organizations for King county senior centers including the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Senior Center.

Local women and the organizations they volunteer for:
  • Jemanesh Demisse (Community Service award): Dale Turner YMCA, Tilth Alliance
  • Dianne Hansen (Intergenerational Impact award): Shoreline Public Library and SWEL Timebank
  • Natalia Mendez (Defining Inspiration award): SeaMar's Lake City Latino Senior Group

Jemanesh Demisse, 72 (right)
Jemanesh Demisse, 72
Community Service.

Jemanesh is dedicated to helping the underserved elders in King County's East African community. She has been working with the East African Senior Meals Program at the Yesler Community Center for over eight years, preparing nutritious and culturally relevant meals for over 50 elders each Thursday and Saturday.

She has demonstrated leadership by actively recruiting volunteers for the meals program and Rainer Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands, and she is not afraid to go out of her way to assist a community member. She is the first to first to fundraise when someone is in need, the first to visit a community member in the hospital, and cheers on the younger generation at graduation ceremonies.

Despite her recent health challenges her dedication to her community is unwavering. Her nominator said, “Jemanesh has a heart of gold… [She] taught me that one can be humble and give without the expectation of getting anything in return.”

Dianne Hansen, 71 (right)

Intergenerational Impact

Dianne is admired for her work as a volunteer tutor and piano teacher in her community. She generously devotes her time to tutoring young children at the Shoreline Public Library, and through the SWEL Timebank discovered her passion for teaching piano lessons.

This inspired Dianne to offer free piano lessons to children whose families couldn't afford private lessons. Dianne also purchased keyboards and music books that she'd loan to students so they could practice at home.

She now devotes time to her 12 young piano students but still finds time to dedicate to other causes, including piano lessons for retiree and working mother students, general tutoring, teaching ESL classes, and sewing classes.

Her patience, compassion and enthusiasm is infectious, and she is an inspiration to all who know her.

Natalia Mendez, 76 (right)

Defining Inspiration

Those who know Natalia are inspired by her positivity and selflessness. Natalia emigrated from Pueblo, Mexico to Yakima when she was 34, where she raised four children on her own and was known in the community for bringing meals to less fortunate families.

She continues to embody this spirit of kindness today, spending hours each week preparing delicious Mexican food to share with SeaMar's Lake City Latino Senior Group. Even though she struggles with chronic pain after a car accident, she remains active physically and is always willing to try new activities like yoga and dancing.

At an event celebrating the independence days of Latin American countries last year, Natalia sang a song from Mexico in front of the lunch crowd. Her nominator described her voice as "soulful, strong, and inspiring" - just like Natalia herself.

Lecture: Financial Wellness and Elder Law - Tuesday

Richmond Beach Community Association presents a Senior Health and Wellness Speaker Series in February

Richmond Beach Community Association is hosting a series of speakers on senior health and wellness during the month of February. The next meetings will occur on February 20 and 27. Both meetings will start at 7:00pm and will be held in the lower level of the Richmond Beach Congregational Church at 1512 NW 195th Street in Shoreline.

The meetings are free and open to all. Whether you are a senior, have a senior in your family or plan to someday become a senior, this series is designed to educate and inform you on three very important topics: housing options, finance/elder law and care options for seniors.

Financial Wellness and Elder Law - February 20

Financial wellness is having an understanding of your financial situation and taking care of it in such a way that you are prepared for financial changes. For seniors, financial wellness can be thrown off balance by unexpected expenses, illness or even theft.

Maggie Knowles of Maggie Knowles Productions has been helping seniors for years manage their finances. Knowles owns her own bookkeeping business and will talk about how seniors can take better care of their finances independently and the signs when they need additional help with their finances. She’ll also speak on what kinds of help with money matters would keep seniors more independent for a longer time.

Richmond Beach Community Association presents a Senior Health and Wellness Speaker Series in February

Saturday, February 3, 2018

Richmond Beach Community Association is hosting series of speakers on senior health and wellness during the month of February.

This series of three meetings will occur on February 13, 20 and 27. All meetings will start at 7:00pm and will be held in the lower level of the Richmond Beach Congregational Church at 1512 NW 195th Street in Shoreline. The meetings are free and open to all.

Whether you are a senior, have a senior in your family or plan to someday become a senior, this series is designed to educate and inform you on three very important topics: housing options, finance/elder law and care options for seniors.

Housing Options - February 13

According to The National Wellness Institute, “Wellness is an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence.” To this end, how better to start off our series than with a focus on housing options for seniors. Speakers Julianna Fickeisen-Thal and Melissa Mather-Brown of Choice Advisory Services will explain the range of housing options available for seniors. They’ll discuss the financial considerations of various housing options and the level of care that comes with each option. They will also talk about when a change in housing is appropriate and how to approach that change. And through their experience of working with many families, they will explain the perils and pitfalls of how family, especially adult children, can help and hinder matters.

Often when you talk about finances and seniors there is cross-over into elder law. Peggy L. Sanders of Sanders Law Group will talk about durable power of attorney, wills, planning for extended care and all about trusts. Sanders’ practice focuses on elder law and is in Edmonds.

Care Options - February 27

Our final session will focus on programs designed especially for seniors and their caregivers and offer on-going support for overall wellness. Tanya McGee, Regional Lead Coordinator with Sound Generations Pathways program, will discuss the programs they have for supporting seniors such as fitness classes, meal program, transportation and Medicaid programs. She’ll also talk about Sound Generations programs focusing on caregivers of seniors such as caregiver respite and in-home care programs.

Our hope is the knowledge these speakers share will help you and your family become more aware of the issues surrounding senior health and wellness. With knowledge, we can increase our resiliency and more comfortably ride the inevitable change life brings our way.

Simple steps to help a Senior stop driving

Tuesday, November 7, 2017

Driving with Grandma is taking your life in your hands. You'd like her to live to a ripe old age - and when she goes, you'd prefer that she not take anyone with her. How do you get the car keys away from her? Linda Asaif, of Aegis Living, has the answers.

Aegis Living
How To Help A Senior Stop Driving (Simple Steps)
By Linda Asaif

As a person ages, it is normal for driving abilities to become impaired. By reducing risk factors and instilling safe driving practices, many individuals may continue to be behind the wheel safely well into the senior years. However, it is important to pay attention to warning signs that age may be impacting driving ability and make the appropriate adjustments as needed.

If you are concerned about a senior driver and have seen the warning signs that it may be time to give up the keys, there are steps that can be taken to make the transition easier. Remember, driving means independence for most, and the method taken to help a senior stop driving must be gentle.

Step #1 – Create a workable transportation plan

Before dropping the ball on your loved one’s inability to drive, have a transportation plan in place, complete with the names and phone numbers of family members, friends and those who are willing to give rides. Be sure to let your loved one know that they do not have to give up their social activities, but may need to rely on others for help. The phone number of a senior transit van or bus is also a reliable route to take.

Step #2 – Show your support

Be willing to listen and not just talk about the sensitive subject. When your senior learns of their inability to drive, they may have a lot of questions that they want answered. Be available to listen and offer support, and let them know that you are there for them.

Step #3 – Have a physician or authority figure speak to senior

If the senior does not want to listen to friends and family have the physician, pastor or authority figure speak to your loved one. The encouragement and reassurance from an outsider can offer a new perspective on the situation and prompt the initiation of a driving assessment or relinquishment of the keys.

Step #4 – Contact the insurance company

If your family member or loved one is not compliant and stubborn in their need for independent transportation, you can reach out to Medicare or the automobile insurance company for help. The insurance companies may assess the senior driver’s record and age and submit a request for a driving evaluation. Your senior will need to comply if they want to continue receiving benefits and coverage.

Step #5 – Report anonymously to the Department of Motor Vehicles

While this tactic may seem sneaky, if you are truly concerned for your loved one’s life and other people’s safety, you may need to pick up the phone and get the help you need. When you speak with the DMV it is appropriate to remain anonymous and simply report the unsafe driver. The DMV should contact the individual and have them complete a driving evaluation to ensure that they are a safe or unsafe driver. Precautions will be taken immediately following the driving exam.

Medicare survey is NOT a scam

Medicare is partnering with the University of Chicago for its regular Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS).

Survey results help the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and researchers learn more about people who use Medicare and their health care experiences.

The study includes randomly selecting 16,000 Medicare beneficiaries nationwide.

Participants will receive a letter and a brochure from NORC (non-partisan and objective research organization) at the University of Chicago about the survey and how to participate in the study.

If they choose to participate, the survey team will call them to set up an in-person interview.

If you receive this survey, it is not a scam. The survey is authorized by Section 1875 of the Social Security Act.
