Northwest Neighbors Network - empowering people to “Age in Place”

Tuesday, August 22, 2017

Help empower people to “age in place” by volunteering with Northwest Neighbors Network.

Given the opportunity, the majority of people in their 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond would prefer to stay in their homes as they age.

Aside from the expense of assisted living, most people prefer to stay where they feel comfortable and secure.

Fortunately, organizations designed to help people stay in the homes are springing up across the United States. Currently there are approximately 200 “Villages,” made up of volunteers and professionals. The Greater Seattle area has half dozen Villages.

Northwest Neighbors Network (NNN) is working to create a new Village for the Shoreline to South Lynnwood area.

NNN has established its website and an outline of how it wants to proceed. Once it is fully established, the goal is to connect members with one another for social activities and/or support systems to help assist people wanting to stay in their homes by providing such things as rides to appointments, shopping trips, household/yard care, simple home repairs, phone check-ins and more.

NNN needs the help of volunteers to complete their mission and begin accepting members.

This grassroots organization needs people with a variety of skill sets, including fundraising, organizational and public relations. A comprehensive list of volunteer opportunities can be found on their website

If you have questions or offers of help, email NNN

It's cold outside - prevent hypothermia in older adults

Friday, January 6, 2017

By Kathy Stewart, VP Nursing Aegis Living

Temperatures in the Seattle area are expected to hover near freezing until Friday. Even for the healthy and young, the chill can be felt through your coat as you wrap your arms around yourself to keep warm. You bundle up just to run out to the mailbox.

By U.S. Air Force photo/Senior Airman Justin Weaver

We must prepare our elderly loved ones for preventing low body temperature, or hypothermia.

While normal body temperature averages 98.6 degrees, hypothermia occurs when the core body temperature drops below 95 degrees.

If you suspect your loved one has hypothermia, they must get immediate care. Winter can be an inconvenience or a nuisance for those who dislike cold weather; but for the elderly, cold weather can be a serious health hazard.

As we get older, our bodies become less efficient at regulating our body temperature
. This puts many seniors, especially those over age 75, at risk for hypothermia. What’s more, hypothermia can happen inside the walls of a loved one’s home, not just when they’re outside in the elements.

The reasons the elderly are at higher risk of hypothermia:

1. Slower metabolism. Seniors have a more difficult time maintaining a normal body temperature. Even in their home, the risk for hypothermia increases if the room temperature dips below 65 degrees.

2. Chronic medical conditions. Many common diseases among the elderly can make it more difficult for seniors to stay warm. Conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, stroke, Parkinson’s disease or an underactive thyroid can increase the risk factor.

3. Medications can affect body temperature. Some medications may change how the body regulates temperature. Antidepressants, nausea medications and some over-the-counter cold medications can make seniors more vulnerable to colder temperatures.

4. Fixed income. Seniors on a tight budget, in an effort to save money, may not use the heat or may not keep their home warm enough.

How can hypothermia be prevented inside the home?

Of course, the obvious answer is to keep the home warm with the thermostat never dipping below 65 degrees. Talk to their physician to see if their health, medical conditions or medications are putting them at greater risk for hypothermia.

Keep plenty of warm blankets and sweaters within an arm’s reach. If they have a fireplace or wood-burning stove, double check their wood supply. Be sure your loved one has a working cell phone or technology that alerts emergency response.

How can hypothermia be prevented outdoors?

When outdoors, encourage your loved one to bundle up in proper multi-layer attire to protect them from the cold, moisture and wind. We suggest they wear a warm hat since large amounts of body heat can escape through your head.

Maybe consider getting them a holiday gift of wool socks, hats, gloves, scarves and thermal-based layers for under their clothing to keep them extra warm and comfortable.

During these cold months, it’s not advised for the elderly to work outside for long periods of time. Offer to help with yard work, hire help during the winter to assist them, and offer to run errands. It is best to warm the car prior to your loved one entering the vehicle.

Many of us would not think twice about getting hypothermia on a 60-degree day, but it’s different for our aged loved ones. On a day that you might not even wear a coat, they could be at risk for hypothermia. Keep them safe!

Aging in Place - Northwest Neighbors Network

Friday, December 16, 2016

Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at 2:00pm, IORA Primary Care Shoreline offices, 15214 Aurora Ave

Usually it's a matter of personal preference, the idea that “there's no place like home.” Sometimes it's a matter of financial necessity; sky-high rents make downsizing impossible.

Whatever the reason, as numerous studies conclude, the overwhelming majority of older adults wishes to “age in place”—stay living in their own homes / apartments throughout their senior years.

Yet aging in place can become challenging. At some point, the “little things” (changing that ceiling light bulb) or unanticipated “bumps” (getting to the mailbox on crutches after a knee replacement) can make it difficult to remain at home.

Not everyone is fortunate enough to have family members or friends to help out, and even for those who do, busy schedules or distance can be limiting factors.

We Want to Help
Northwest Neighbors Network (NNN) is a nonprofit organization forming in this area to be the neighbor you can count on.

Serving Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Woodway, Mountlake Terrace and parts of south Edmonds and Lynnwood, NNN's purpose is to coordinate community volunteers and prescreened professionals to help neighbors with such things as rides to appointments, shopping trips, household and yard care, simple home repairs, phone check-ins and friendly visits, and social activities.

We Need YOUR Help
As part of the rapidly growing national “Village” movement, NNN is one of a handful of Washington nonprofits helping seniors age in place. Because NNN anticipates only one paid staff position, funded by membership fees and hopefully grants or other funding sources, many volunteers will be needed to make NNN work. Our small planning team has accomplished much, but we need more volunteers to take on tasks small or large to move NNN to the point of launching our membership drive.

If you love your home and wish to stay in it for as close to forever as possible, or have parents or grandparents who do, please help us now.

Join us on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at 2:00pm at the beautiful IORA Primary Care Shoreline offices, 15214 Aurora Ave N (just south of the Shoreline JoAnn Fabric) to hear the exciting news about NNN's partnership with a local college, meet other volunteers, and learn how you can help NNN progress.

Refreshments will be served. RSVP to Gail Schwarz or 206-240-0279.
