Curtain Up! Light the lights! Gypsy plays at Seattle Musical Theatre

Monday, April 15, 2013

Cast members of Gypsy
at Seattle Musical Theatre
Seattle Musical Theatre wraps up their 35th anniversary season with the musical masterpiece, Gypsy, performing April 26 through May 19, 2013.

Clearly on the top of almost every best musical list, this gem shares the intense tale of Seattle’s own Gypsy Rose Lee's younger years with her larger than life stage mom, Rose. Gypsy follows Rose’s incessant drive to push her daughters, Louise (who would later become Gypsy Rose Lee) and June to the big time on the vaudeville circuit in the 1920’s. While often hysterically funny, Gypsy also shows the raw side of dramatic ambition and the emptiness that both success and failure can bring.

This self described musical fable is an adaptation of Gypsy: A Memoir, the autobiography of Gypsy Rose Lee, who began performing in the vaudeville houses in Seattle as a young child. While June became the distinguished motion-picture star June Havoc, Louise had a rich career as an actress, author and playwright while starring in burlesque, theatre, movies and her own talk show. However, she was best known for emphasizing the “tease” in striptease. As her son Eric Preminger states, “not bad for a poor girl from Seattle whose mother insisted had no talent.”

Originally opening in 1959, Gypsy was the collaboration of all the genius minds of Broadway’s golden era. Coming off their success with West Side Story, lyricist Steven Sondheim, choreographer Jerome Robbins and writer Arthur Laurents joined forces with Jule Styne to write the music.

Nominated for eight Tony Awards during its original run, Gypsy went on to win multiple Tonys, Drama Desk and Critic’s Circle Awards in revivals from 1973 to 2008. The musical features a little bit of everything, including both intense dramatic and comedic scenes exploring varied topics such as child abuse, early love and mental illness, to classic soft shoe and tap numbers and burlesque spectacles.

Audiences will surely recognize some of the biggest show tunes of all time including, “Everything’s Coming up Roses,” “Together,” “Wherever We Go,”  “Rose’s Turn,” and “Let Me Entertain You.”

Seattle Musical Theatre announces their 36th season

Saturday, January 12, 2013

Seattle Musical Theatre has constructed an enticing 36th season that will thrill audiences from all walks of life. New this year is a five show repertoire that includes a whimsical mix of Broadway and off-Broadway hits, contemporary and classic musicals, and adult delights along with fun for the whole family!

The 2013-2014 season kicks off with the Tony-nominated movie-to-musical hit Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (September 13 – October 6). Based on the popular 1988 film, the musical follows two con men living in the French Rivera, one making his extravagant living by swindling rich ladies out of their fortunes, and another who scams women by waking their compassion with the fictitious tragic tale of his grandmother’s waning health. But after meeting on a train, they realize the small town isn’t big enough for two frauds, so they determine a conning competition is the best way to see who gets to claim the territory. However, the con artist that comes out on top may come as a surprise to everyone. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a cheeky, irreverent musical sure to keep everyone laughing until the very end.

To ring in the holidays, Seattle Musical Theatre is bringing back the hit from their 35th season, Scrooge! (December 6 – 22) Based on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, Scrooge! follows grumpy Ebenezer Scrooge through his revealing night of ghostly visits from his late business partner and Christmas Past, Present, and Future. Winner of multiple Academy and Grammy Awards, Leslie Bricusse brings new life to this classic tale. Seattle Musical Theatre took its audience feedback to heart with the successful production, building a holiday tradition for families to experience this everlasting and heartwarming tale each year.

The third selection is the Tony and Drama Desk award-winning The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (February 7 – 23). This hilariously silly musical follows six young people as they compete to become a spelling bee champion. Fraught with the woes of puberty and overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, these youngsters struggle to become the best, but ultimately learn that winning isn't everything and that losing doesn't necessarily make you a loser. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee will leave a smile on everyone’s face as this quirky yet charming cast of outsiders demonstrate how they can stand out and fit in at the same time. As a unique twist, every performance includes four audience members who participate on stage as part of the bee, guaranteeing a new set of hilarious experiences every night.

Coming up quickly afterward will be the Mel Brook’s show that took Seattle by storm on its road to Broadway in 2007. Young Frankenstein (March 21 – April 13) is a monstrous new musical comedy that will have you remembering all the classic lines from the 1974 film starring Gene Wilder. It is the only place you'll witness a singing and dancing laboratory experiment in the largest tuxedo ever made. See Frederick Frankenstein as he unwillingly follows in his grandfather’s footsteps and becomes the mad scientist he was always meant to be. Young Frankenstein is a true roll in the hay that should not be missed by anyone!

Rounding out the season is the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Tony Award, and Drama Desk Award winner Sunday in the Park with George (May 23 – June 15). This moving study of the enigmatic painter Georges Seurat follows the artist as he struggles to maintain his relationship with his love, Dot, while working on his definitive painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.” We then meet his descendent 100 years later, an American artist uncertain of the road ahead of him. Musical theatre masters Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine bring to stage a heartbreaking work that is one of the most acclaimed musicals of our time.

Subscriptions will be available to the public for purchase in March online at  or over the phone at 206-363-2809.

Seattle Musical Theatre celebrates Charles Dickens’ 200th birthday with Scrooge: The Musical!

Monday, October 22, 2012

Scrooge and Tiny Tim in SMT's production of Scrooge, The Musical!
Stegar Thompson as Ebenezer Scrooge and
Kitana Turnbull.as Tiny Tim

Seattle Musical Theatre dives into the holiday spirit early this year to celebrate Charles Dickens’ 200th birthday with their production of Scrooge: The Musical from November 16th through December 9th, including shows on Thanksgiving weekend!

Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol, leaps from the pages in this melodic revamp of the yuletide classic. Scrooge: The Musical follows grumpy Ebenezer Scrooge through a revealing night of ghostly visits from his late business partner, and Christmas Past, Present and Future.  Ultimately the ghosts lead Scrooge to redemption through the rediscovery of the love, truth and happiness found in Christmas. Leslie Bricusse adapted the script in 1992 from his own celebrated film starring Albert Finney, with the festive tunes “Father Christmas” and “December the Twenty-Fifth” showcasing the songwriting prowess that earned him a Grammy and two Academy Awards throughout his career.

“What I enjoy about the transformation of the original story into this musical is that is allows us to go deeper into the feelings of the characters,” says director Steven Fogell. “The music can transport us emotionally into the heart of the story; greed, misunderstanding, redemption, and love.”

Listed in the songwriter Hall of Fame, Bricusse brings new life to this classic that has been a part of all of our holidays since we were as small as Tiny Tim.  Other Bricusse favorites include the films  Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Victor/Victoria and Doctor Doolittle, all of which earned him multiple Academy Award nominations and awards.  Bricusse also received Tony Award nominations for his Broadway musicals Jekyll & Hyde, and Stop the World – I Want to Get Off.

Steven Fogell is heading the artistic team as Director and Scenic Designer. He comes to Seattle Musical Theatre after seventeen years as Bainbridge Performing Arts’ Education Director and then later Artistic Director. He has also recently taken on the position of Seattle Musical Theatre’s growing youth and adult education program as Education Director.

Tickets for Scrooge: The Musical are priced at $35-$40. Performances run from November 16th through December 9th, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm, Sundays at 2:00pm, and an extra show on Thursday, December 6th at 7:30pm. For tickets, call 206-363-2809 or go online

A Chorus Line opens Feb. 10 at Seattle Musical Theatre

Sunday, January 22, 2012

Before there was Glee, there was A Chorus Line. The heart wrenching and exhilarating portal into the lives of those driven to perform opens February 10, 2012 at Seattle Musical Theatre.

Set in 1975, the book was authored by James Kirkwood Jr. and Nicholas Dante. The lyrics were written by Edward Kleban and the music was composed by Marvin Hamlisch. The depth of their talent and skill is evidenced not only by the winning of nine Tony Awards, but a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, which is extremely rare for musical theatre.

A Chorus Line follows a group of desperate to work actor/dancers through their audition experience for a spot on the synchronized dance chorus of an upcoming Broadway production. Ironically, Director Zach uses the audition to mine each of their very unique personal events that shaped their lives as dancers.

The show is a historical piece as well. Written from the experiences of real dancers on Broadway in 1974, it is filled with pop cultural references of the time. This was a different era, where skeletons were locked securely in closets, and there was no social media to reveal one’s secrets. The social revelations in A Chorus Line were ground breaking in their day. The themes, however, are timeless, as the experiences of the dancers of “the line” leaves the audience with a deeper understanding of overcoming pain and fear in our search to experience what we love.

Seattle Musical Theatre (formerly Civic Light Opera) is conveniently located in Magnuson Park, at 7120 62nd Ave NE. Parking is free and plentiful. Have dinner in LFP at the Grill or The Commons and easily make the 20 minute drive to SMT. Performances are Friday through Sunday, with one Thursday night offering. Tickets are $35-$40 with special rates for seniors, students and group sales. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling the box office at 206-363-2809.

Seattle Musical Theatre presents Hairspray November 11 to December 11

Thursday, November 3, 2011

“Welcome to the 60’s!” with this riotous explosion of love, laughter and a heartfelt exploration of what makes us all human. The show opens in Baltimore, Maryland in 1962 with our “pleasantly plump” hero, Tracy Turnblad, dreaming of fame, love and her desire to dance on The Corny Collins show. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes an overnight celebrity and her dreams morph into something bigger – integrating the show. But society - led by the devious Amber Von Tussle and her racist stage mother, Velma – would dash those dreams, just as they would the dreams of all the “colored folk” across town. But fortunately, local heartthrob and TV dance show host, Link Larkin, along with beauty salon owner Motormouth Maybelle and her dancing kids, Seaweed and Little Inez, help Tracy create a new reality.

Hairspray opens November 11th and plays Friday through Sunday through December 11th. There will be no performances Thanksgiving weekend, however there will be one Thursday night offering on December 8th. Seattle Musical Theatre (formerly Civic Light Opera) is conveniently located in Magnuson Park, at 7120 62nd Ave NE . Parking is free and plentiful with several excellent restaurants located nearby on Sand Point Way, Northgate and University Village. Tickets are $35-$40 with special rates for seniors, students and group rates Tickets can be purchased online   or by calling the box office at 206-363-2809.

While Hairspray is hilarious, it is the issues surrounding segregation that are at the core of the story. Director Vincent Orduna appropriately tells this poignant story from inside a television studio utilizing “America’s budding love affair with television and rock ‘n roll in the 60’s which helped change and shape the cultural relationships of this country”. Orduna and the Hairspray team profoundly address the discrimination of the time by exposing the ludicrousness of the concept “that we can live separately from one another”. Tracy simplifies it best when she says; “I just think it’s stupid we can’t all dance together”.

Hairspray is written by Mark O’Donnel and Thomas Meehan and is based on the 1988 John Waters film.

Chicago team stages world premiere musical in Seattle Mar 20

Friday, March 18, 2011

World premiere at Seattle Musical Theatre, Sunday, March 20: "The King’s Proposal (or the Marriage of Princess Guido)", book and lyrics by Michael Govier, music by Curtis Williams.

March 20 through April 10, 2011.
Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm, Sundays at 2pm. (Special show Thursday, April 7 at 7:30pm)

Seattle Musical Theatre, Magnuson Park, Community Center Building, 7120 62nd Ave. NE Seattle, WA 98115.

Admission: $20-$30. For tickets and information call the Seattle Musical Theatre at 206-363-2809, or see their website

About the production:

The Emerald City is known for many things: angst-ridden rock music, questionable fashion choices, gorgeous scenery, and just a tad too much rain. The Broadway world knows there is now another reputation Seattle can boast: great success with world premiere musicals.

“We chose Seattle for a reason,” says Chicago-based playwright Michael Govier, who is bringing his new comedic musical, The King’s Proposal (or the Marriage of Princess Guido) to the city as part of Seattle Musical Theatre’s 33rd season next month. “There’s a rich history here, and this city is a hot spot for musical debuts—just look at Hairspray, Young Frankenstein, Next to Normal… there are dozens of big guns that have started here.”

Featuring a cast of predominantly local actors, The King’s Proposal is a PG-13, Monty Python-like musical that tells the story of an evil king who tries to marry his daughter to an unwanted suitor. A case of mistaken identities turns into a tale of forced marriage—not to mention forced cross-dressing, forced song singing, occasional sword fighting and the obligatory puppet scene.

As Govier says, “"Even people who don't really like musicals can enjoy this one because it has something for everyone—as long as you don't hate laughing!”

Seattle-area natives Jacob Hutchison and Mary-Faith Givens will be playing the roles of the King and Queen. Experienced Chicago-based actor Brennan Buhl was in the original workshop version of The King’s Proposal and was asked by Govier and Williams to make the trek to Seattle with them to fill the role of the hilariously nervous Guido. Of all the talented people who are bringing the show to life, Govier says, “Rehearsals have been going great. I can not wait for Seattle to see all the hard work we’ve been doing."

Seattle Musical Threatre to premier two original musicals

Saturday, June 26, 2010

Seattle Musical Theatre is excited to announce the launch of their Second Season: a series of original musicals.

While SMT is known for producing high quality productions of established Broadways shows, they realized that there are many talented individuals and groups who are writing exciting new works and looking for opportunities to produce their musicals. In keeping with their mission to provide opportunities for local artists to develop and perfect their crafts, SMT has dedicated their theatre and resources to help produce two new musicals:

The first show, Don Giovanni: A New Musical, is a completely re-envisioned musical theatre version of Mozart and Lorenzo Da Ponte’s opera by the same name and will run January 7 – 23, 2011. Written by Seattle native Jesse Smith, it features a brand new score that mixes contemporary music with theatrical and operatic influences. The show enjoyed a great reception when it was produced at Cornish College of the Arts last summer and SMT is excited to stage its first professional incarnation.

The second show is called The King’s Proposal or the Marriage of Princess Guido. With book and lyrics by Michael Govier and music by Northwest native Curtis Williams, it is the comic tale of an evil King who tries to marry his daughter to an unwanted suitor and involves mistaken identities, forced marriage, forced puppetry, forced cross-dressing, forced songs and swords. The King’s Proposal has been produced as a straight play in Chicago and will enjoy its first production as a musical at SMT. It will run March 20 – April 10, 2011.

Both shows will be fully produced , like any other SMT musical, with sets, costumes, lights, sound, props and a regular sized orchestra.

Main stage shows for SMT’s 2010-2011 season are Camelot, Chicago, The Drowsy Chaperone and Into the Woods.

Ticket prices for Second Season productions are $25-$30, $20 for students and seniors. All performances are at the Magnuson Park Theatre, 7400 Sand Point Way NE, Seattle. Great season ticket packages at steep discounts are still available.
