County Council proclaims See Blue Week - expands “Blue Friday” for countdown to Super Bowl

The members of the Metropolitan King County Council are looking for a “Sea of Blue” after declaring the week of January 26 - February 1 as "See Blue Week" in support of the Seattle Seahawks as they prepare to defend their Super Bowl title.

“From the fronts of our Metro buses to the tops of the cranes across our skyline, the support and civic pride our region has for our Seahawks is impossible to miss” said Councilmember Rod Dembowski.
“For the second year in a row it is remarkable to watch our county come together behind one of the most unique and talented sports franchises in the nation. Even for the casual sport fan, it is hard not to get caught up in the excitement and emotion of a second straight Super Bowl run. Go Hawks!”

This expansion of "Blue Friday" recognizes the impact of the “12s” support during this championship season and most notably during the historic comeback during the NFL Championship.

This action asks Seattle Seahawks fans from everywhere to show their support by wearing blue during the Super Bowl "countdown" week.

WHEREAS, our beloved Seattle Seahawks have carried the day in taking us to a second consecutive Super Bowl, Super Bowl XLIX; and

WHEREAS, the “12th Man” will be at the University of Phoenix Stadium in force and spirit; and

WHEREAS, because a “Sea of Blue” helped the Hawks prevail against the Green Bay Packers leading to this Super Bowl moment; and

WHEREAS, the fans have shown our pride of the Seahawks through “Blue Fridays” and the power of “Blue;” and

WHEREAS, we want our Seahawks to feel not only the seismic force of the “12” but to also see a sea of blue throughout the region for the week leading up to Super Bowl XLIX

NOW, THEREFORE, we, the King County Executive and Metropolitan King County Council, proclaim, January 26-February 1, 2015 as

“See Blue Week”

So that the nation will witness a “sea of blue” and the force of the fans on Super Bowl Sunday 2015.

Sheriff Urquhart Makes Super Bowl Bet

Cupcake Royale 12th Man
Seattle: King County Sheriff John Urquhart has made a friendly wager on Super Bowl XLIX with Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department (Boston MA).

When the New England Patriots lose Sheriff Tompkins will be sending a dozen lobster tail pastries from Luberto’s Bakery in Revere, MA to the King County Courthouse.

Sheriff Tompkins is correct when he says “The King County Sheriff’s Office is one of the finest law enforcement agencies in the country and the Seahawks are a solid team” but we believe he’s confused when he goes on to say “the Lombardi Cup is coming back to New England in nine days”.

In return Sheriff Urquhart has wagered a selection of cupcakes from Seattle’s own Cupcake Royale along with made-in-Seattle Sea-Salt Truffles from Fran’s Chocolates, favorites of President and Mrs. Obama!

“The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department and the New England Patriots may have a strong history, but the Seahawks and the 12th Man have destiny on their side. No fan of the Seahawks will ever lose faith in our team’s ability to win the big game,” said Sheriff Urquhart.

Go Hawks!

Transportation to the Seahawks game Sunday Jan 18 against Green Bay

Friday, January 16, 2015

Here's what you need to know about getting to the big game, getting home, and navigating around the traffic for the Seahawks vs Green Bay Packers NFC Championship Game at CenturyLink Field on Sunday, January 18, 2015. Kick off at 12pm (for the 12th Man)

WSDOT

As we anxiously countdown to Sunday’s NFC Championship Game when the Seattle Seahawks take on the Green Bay Packers at CenturyLink Field, we want to pass along some information that could affect your travel plans. And of course, go Hawks!

Expect about 2,000 enthusiastic fans sporting their blue and green pride at Westlake Park in downtown Seattle from 11am to 1pm Friday, Jan. 16. The Seahawks Playoff Rally will close Pine Street between 4th and 5th avenues. Except delays if you are in the area.

Now, to game day. The I-90 express lanes will operate westbound from 7am to 2pm on Sunday, Jan. 18. Lanes will be eastbound by 3pm. The I-5 express lanes will operate on a normal weekend schedule. We often get a lot of questions about why we don’t adjust the I-5 schedule for big games like this one when 68,000 fans are expected to attend. There are tricky statistics behind it. See recent traffic studies for more information. And just to emphasize my earlier statement… go Hawks!

SOUND TRANSIT

Seattle Seahawks fans can take Sound Transit's special Sounder trains to the Seahawks NFC championship game this Sunday. Special Sounder service to the 12:05pm game is in addition to regular Link light rail and ST Express bus services to and from the stadium area.

Seattle-bound trains from Snohomish County will depart Everett at 9:15 and 9:30am with stops in Mukilteo and Edmonds, arriving at King Street Station at 10:14 and 10:29am.

Return trains to Everett will leave Seattle 15 and 75 minutes after the game. The last outbound train will depart later than normal to allow fans time to participate in post-game activities. An online schedule of Sounder trains serving Seahawks games is available here

As part of game-day festivities, riders can pick up "I'm In!" rally signs provided by the Seahawks at all Sounder stations.

Sounder game day trains have grown popular over the years. Ridership on special Sounder train service was up 35 percent in the third quarter of last year, and served more than 33,000 riders during the same period.

Many ST Express buses also drop off passengers near the stadium. Link and ST Express bus schedules are available here

Regular fares apply for all Sound Transit services.

METRO TRANSIT

Football fans can climb on King County Metro Transit game day shuttles to the Seahawks playoff game against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, Jan. 18.

Shuttles require cash fare and leave specific park-and-ride locations two hours before kickoff, and return to those park-and-rides after the game. Travelers in the SODO, Pioneer Square and downtown Seattle areas can expect traffic congestion and delays before and after Seahawks games.

Metro’s non-stop Seahawks shuttles leave the Northgate Transit Center beginning two hours before kick-off. Each shuttle will leave as it is filled. The last shuttle leaves for the game about 35 minutes before kickoff. All pre-game shuttles arrive near CenturyLink Field on Fifth Avenue South at South Weller Street.

Seahawk shuttle fare information

  • Cash-only fare is $4 each way or $8 for a round trip.
  • No ORCA cards, transfers or passes are accepted for the Seahawk shuttles.
  • Exact change is required.
  • Buses returning to the park and rides leave from Fifth Avenue South at South Weller Street. Details are on Metro’s Seahawks shuttle page.

For information about regular transit service to Seahawks games, or to plan other trips, visit Metro Online or Metro’s online Trip Planner. After planning your trip, check Metro’s alerts page to find out about any planned revisions to your routes. Also, the Puget Sound Trip Planner app is available for Apple and Android devices.

Three Shoreline teachers honored in celebration at CenturyLink Field

Symetra and the Seattle Seahawks honored the 16 Puget Sound-area teachers who were recognized as Symetra Heroes in the Classroom® during the 2013 NFL season, at a special celebration at CenturyLink Field on March 14.

Among the 2013 honorees were three Shoreline School District teachers:
  • Shereen Allen — Cascade K-8 Community School
  • Allison Bowhay — Echo Lake Elementary School
  • Stephanie Rietman — Shorecrest High School

Jim Pirak, Symetra SVP, Marketing, and Mike Flood, Seattle Seahawks VP, Community Relations and Special Projects, hosted a luncheon in the Coach’s Loft, welcoming the teachers, their school principals and special guests, including Shoreline School District Superintendent Sue Walker.

Shoreline Schools Superintendent Sue Walker, pictured with linebacker
K.J. Wright, was a special guest at the event.

Following lunch, the teachers received an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the stadium, which included taking in a view of the field from the press box. The festivities wrapped up in the Seahawks locker room, where each teacher was surprised with a “customized” locker complete with nameplate. Each teacher’s locker’s contents included a plaque commemorating his or her “Heroes” award and a copy of the March 14 edition of the Seattle Times, which featured a ¼-page ad saluting all 16 Symetra Heroes in the Classroom recipients.

Seahawks Linebacker K.J. Wright was a special guest, joining the teachers and guests in the players’ locker room.

Wright, who brought along the Lombardi Trophy, offered some advice for the teachers with students who have designs on becoming NFL or NBA players.

“Just tell them, ‘Just make sure you get your degree,’ ” Wright said. “Because, for example, my last semester of college I had the opportunity to leave so I could go train in like Florida or somewhere; or stay and train at my school and get my degree. I chose to stay. I worked out and I got my degree at the same time. You never know what will happen, so get your degree. If you make it to the NFL, that’s just a bonus. But the education that will last you a lifetime.”

About Symetra Heroes in the Classroom®

Since 2006, more than 180 Puget Sound-area teachers have been honored as Symetra Heroes in the Classroom. Teachers are recognized in front of their students and peers at surprise in-school presentations. They receive tickets to a Seahawks home game, where they are acknowledged during on-field presentations at CenturyLink Field. In addition, Symetra makes a $1,000 donation to each teacher Hero’s school for classroom books and supplies. Teachers may be nominated by their principal, district staff, student or student’s parent. The winners are selected based on their ability to make a real difference in students' lives; to go above and beyond in their day-to-day responsibilities; and to help students build life skills. Denver Public Health made good on Superbowl bet

The wry faces are those of Broncos fans...

Denver Public Health made good on their Superbowl bet with Seattle/King County Public Health.

Their director, Dr. Bill Burman, with the SKCPH Seahawks flu prevention poster on the board behind him, is wearing sunglasses from the local HIV testing campaign, AND a King County Public Health Reserve Corps t-shirt.

They even put a Mariner Moose "cover your coughs" poster in their immunization clinic. Talk about good sports!

Our people at Seattle/King County Public Health say, "Thanks for the Superbowl hijinks, Denver Health! If the NFL cards line up, let's do this again next year!"

Seahawks parade photos

Thursday, February 6, 2014

If you consider that the entire population of Seattle - man, woman, and child - was on 4th Avenue for the Seahawks parade on Wednesday, and the entire population of Shoreline - and Lake Forest Park - there would still be room within the 750,000 estimate for Kenmore.

Contributing photographer Geoff Vlcek was in the middle of it, as seen by these photos of the history-making event. For those who want more Seahawk info, HistoryLink has a whole page of articles - here.

Getting to the parade: Seahawks Victory Parade transit service information

Tuesday, February 4, 2014

On Wednesday, February 5, the downtown Seattle and adjacent areas will be affected by street closures and congestion as Seahawks fans gather to welcome home and honor their Super Bowl winning team.

While the Seahawks Victory Parade is southbound on Fourth Avenue through downtown from Seattle Center to CenturyLink Field, and 4th Avenue will be closed for the midday event, many other streets and local neighborhoods will also be affected, both well before and well after the actual parade.  Parking in and near downtown Seattle is expected to be very limited.

Metro is using all available resources and making every effort to keep transit service moving, but there will likely be delays and service disruptions.  Metro plans to reroute about 33 bus routes in the downtown area, but unexpected disruptions may also occur during the event.

Commuters
Metro's regular commuters may want to get an early start Wednesday, as many Seahawks fans may also plan to head downtown early. Area park and ride lots may be more crowded or fill up earlier than usual.

Additionally, due to crowds and congestion that are expected to last well into the afternoon commute time, the trip home may also be more crowded or delayed.

Street closures
Pine Street west of 9th Avenue will close at about 7:00am on Wednesday, and Fourth Avenue is expected to close at about 10 AM.  When 4th Av is closed, Metro will not be able to cross it at any location except Yesler Way.

Transit reroutes
Metro and other buses that use or cross 4th Avenue between S Royal Brougham Way and Seattle Center will be rerouted, and nearly all transit service that travels through the downtown area will be affected by altered routing or delays.

Seahawks and Parade Fans
When preparing for Wednesday’s event, Metro encourages fans to plan ahead, arrive early, be ready for very cold weather, expect transit and traffic  delays and, most of all, to travel safely.

Transit information
Visit Metro's Service Advisories page for information about planned reroutes during Wednesday's event.

Metro’s online Trip Planner indicates service that is rerouted as well as scheduled and predicted departure times. Predicted times are available but may be less accurate when buses are rerouted or significantly delayed.

In addition to Metro, Community Transit, and Sound Transit operate in the downtown Seattle area. Payment of fare is required on all transit service.

Visit Sound Transit's website for information about extra Sounder and Link rail service on Wednesday.

The victory parade to honor the Superbowl Champion Seahawks will take place on Wednesday morning, starting in downtown Seattle.

The parade starts at 11am on Fourth Avenue, south of Denny Way. It will continue along Fourth, and arrive at CenturyLink Field around 1:30pm.

Metro warns of disruptions to bus routes because of the traffic and organizers encourage fans to carpool or use transit to get downtown, as parking will be very limited.

In spite of suggestions after the game, schools will not close for the event.

The event will be carried live on KING 5 and streamed on KING5.com.

“Thanks to Coach Pete Carroll and all the players as they return with our region's first Super Bowl championship. The Lombardi Trophy has found its new home in King County. We are the best fans in the NFL. And today we can say, without fear of contradiction, that our team is the best in the NFL.
