Eagle Scout project - dinosaurs at the Children's Center

Sunday, September 14, 2014

Jacob Fenske and his dinosaurs

Photos by Jennifer and Brent Fenske

Last month, Troop 325 Eagle Scout candidate Jacob Fenske created new "dinosaurs" to adorn the outside playground at the Shoreline Children's Center on Meridian Avenue North in Shoreline.

With the help of his troop, Jacob cut new plywood creatures, and then sanded, prepped, painted and installed them at the Center. Over 87 hours went into this Eagle project.

Jacob hopes to receive his Eagle Scout award this Fall.

The Eagle Scout rank is the highest achievement in scouting and requires the scout to earn badges, complete service hours, learn and teach outdoor skills, take on leadership roles, and plan, organize and complete a personal service project in his community.

Only 7% of scouts earn this prestigious award; since 1912 over 2.3 million scouts have earned the Eagle Scout rank.

For more information about Jacob's project and scouting, check out the Troop 325 website.

Scout organizes food drive for Hopelink this Friday and Saturday at Safeway

Tuesday, September 9, 2014

When you do your grocery shopping this Friday and Saturday, consider adding a few items for the Shoreline HopeLink food bank.

Shoreline resident Andrew Seger, working with Shoreline HopeLink, has organized a food drive for his Eagle Scout Service Project.

On Friday, September 12 from 6 to 8pm and on Saturday September 13 from 10am to 6pm, Andrew and his volunteer crew will be outside the North City Safeway at NE 175th and 15th NE, asking people to add a few items for the local food bank.

HopeLink reports a local shortage which is not expected to abate until the Holiday food drives begin.

The Shoreline HopeLink normally does not collect enough donations locally to support the need and usually relies on distributions from eastside HopeLink locations.

Andrew is hoping to do something about that.

Lake Forest Park girl earns Girl Scouts' highest award

Thursday, June 12, 2014

Sophie Knudson achieves
Girl Scout Gold Award
Sophie Knudson of Lake Forest Park has just completed requirements for the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouts. Fewer than six percent of all Girl Scouts ever receive this award.

The Gold Award challenges girls to change their communities - and the world - in a way that has a sustainable impact. The quest is to solve a problem and Sophie identified and addressed just that by organizing an event to educate her community about the tremendous number of deaths caused by malaria throughout the world.

Last year, Sophie organized the first annual "One Day 5K run" to help combat malaria in rural Africa.

This year the race was organized by the Lake Forest Park Youth Council, of which Sophie is president. Held on April 13 at Kellogg Middle School, 16045 25th Ave NE, it raised enough money to provide 647 mosquito nets to families living in rural Kenya.

The Youth Council has agreed to host the 5K annually.

She is glad that she was able to explore her passion and showcase her dedication with the project, adding, “My mission isn’t only about combating malaria, it is also about building youth leaders to make a change in our local as well as global community.”

Scout research has shown that Girl Scout Gold Award recipients do well in life. They rate their general success in life significantly higher than their peers and report higher success in reaching their life goals.

Knudson will be honored for her accomplishments at s special Gold Award Gala at the Tacoma Art Museum on June 22.

Troop 325 Eagle Scouts

Troop 325 boy scouts don't just go on exciting adventures and learn to cook over a campfire, they work diligently and with purpose to complete all of the rank requirements to achieve the highest rank in Scouting, Eagle, by their 18th birthday.

The troop has had a high percentage of Eagle scouts over the years under the leadership of former Scoutmasters Gary Buck and Bob Plaag, and current Scoutmaster, Nancy Marx. Gary Buck is the current troop Eagle adviser.

2013 Shorewood graduates and recent Eagle Scouts from Troop 325 are Austin Buchanen, Aaron Miller, Russell Marx, and Jonathan Gugger.
Colin Eoff is also a 2013 Shorewood grad and previously received his Eagle rank.
Zach Jacobsen also received the rank of Eagle in 2013 and will be graduating from King's High School next year.

Daniel Heath just completed his Eagle project this month, constructing a picnic area at Jacob's Well, a temporary shelter for women and children in Shoreline, and will be receiving his official Eagle rank soon.

Austin Springman is currently working to complete his Eagle requirements, while also being on staff at BSA Camp Brinkley this summer. Daniel and Austin will be graduating from Shorewood next June.

Scouts must complete 21 badges including required subjects like First Aid, Camping, Citizenship, and Wilderness Survival, as well as other areas of interest like Robotics, Rock Climbing, and Geology. In addition, scouts are required to do community service, perform leadership roles within the troop, learn basic skills, participate in outdoor activities, and go on at least one week long summer trip.

Jonathan explained, "I wanted to get involved with Pitch In for Baseball because I thought an equipment collection would be a great way to promote my love of the sport and complete my Eagle Scout Project. I was happy to help communities that lost everything from Hurricane Sandy before the baseball season started. It is cool to think that maybe I contributed to introducing baseball to another child in our country or somewhere in the world."

Girl Scout event inspires girls to pursue STEM careers

Hundreds of young girls listen intently as Dr. Bonnie Dunbar talks
about her adventures in space

By Emily Goergen, Girl Scout Junior, Troop 41002

Over 400 girls in Kindergarten through 6th grade, 200 adults, and 140 exhibitors and volunteers participated in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) event organized by a troop of 4th and 5th grade Girl Scout Juniors on Saturday, May 11th, at Einstein Middle School in Shoreline.

Dr. Dunbar autographed photos

The event featured speakers including retired female astronaut Dr. Bonnie Dunbar, who was recently inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame,® and video game designers Bronwen Grimes and Kristine Ishii. Girls also participated in hands-on activities, such as learning about needs and wants with a CPA, extracting DNA from strawberries, and constructing penny boats.

The troop decided to host the event when they heard that kids decide whether they are interested in STEM fields by about third grade, while most STEM programs target middle- and high-school students. Additional research shows that meeting an inspiring person and doing a hands-on activity are more likely to get kids interested in STEM fields than book-based classroom instruction.

Women in STEM fields talked to the girls

Participants had plenty of opportunity to do both. Dr. Dunbar shared her photos from space and stressed the need for more females in scientific fields, including the need for more female astronauts. Ms. Grimes and Ms. Ishii spoke to Junior Girl Scouts about how video games are developed. In addition, scientists, developers, physicists, and other women in STEM fields met with small groups of girls to talk about what they do.

The event also featured an egg drop sponsored by University Mechanical Contractors Inc. Over 100 girls submitted entries for the competition. After the first round, which involved dropping an egg 20 feet, 12 submissions survived the 30 foot drop in the final round.

Other featured activities included the University of Washington’s planetarium exhibit, the Shoreline Solar Project’s hands-on solar oven construction workshop, a demonstration of the robotic life suit from They Shall Walk, bicycle powered smoothies from the Cascade Bicycle Club, and assembling and flying balsam wood gliders with Boeing and Alaska Airlines volunteers.

The event was organized and managed by the girls in Junior Girl Scout troop 41002. From the ideas about what to include in the event to the design of the badge, from the registration form to the rules for the egg drop, the event was developed by girls who are nine to eleven years old, with help from adults who coached them along the way.

Heather Fitzpatrick is the leader of the troop, which includes girls from Edmonds, and Shoreline.
