Many scout troops picking up Christmas trees Saturday, Jan 8

I previously posted a story about scout troops picking up Christmas trees curbside this Saturday, January 8. Because of my experience with the police blotters for Shoreline and LFP, I suggested that people not leave money with the tree, as was instructed on the envelope on my doorknob, but instead mail in their donation - and I gave the address for Troop 324.

Bruce Pyper, adult leader for Troop 317 in Lake Forest Park, says that there are many scout troops picking up trees in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, and suggested nicely that not all the donations should be sent to one troop. (oops - Editor)

Read the hanger that was left on your doorstep. It will have an address or a phone number for information. If you cannot find the hanger or envelope, send the SAN your address and we'll find out where your donation should go.

Bruce said, "The troops are responsible for working with the other troops in the area to coordinate who is doing which neighborhood. This avoids 'custody battles' over the trees and any donations. The local Boy Scout Council (Chief Seattle Council) helps track who is doing which area, but it is still up to the troops work out the boundary lines."

"Each Boy Scout Troop is in charge of their own budget and fund raising to support themselves. Many troops in the area having been picking up Christmas trees for years to fund their activities. My troop, Troop 317, has been picking up trees for around 25 years. Troop 324 has been picking up for 18 years.

"Most troops time their pick up with when City of Shoreline is offering to recycle Christmas trees. This gives the troops someplace to take the trees they pick up. I don't have numbers to support it, but I would imagine that more trees are recycled as all people have to do is drag the tree to the curb. Traffic congestion at the tree recycling is also reduced as most troops bring in truck loads (think of a U-haul truck) of trees at a time. A "Win-Win-Win" for the city, tree owners, and Boy Scout Troops!

"Troop 317 has funded many hiking, kayak, or canoeing trips through picking up Christmas trees over the years. Trips to Boy Scout Summer Camp have also been paid for by trees picked up the winter before. Boys who have "graduated" from our troop years ago still remember picking up trees. They also remember the fun camp-outs the trees pay for. We look forward to continuing this tradition of recycling trees for many years."

What to do with the Chrstimas tree? Give it to the Scouts

Tuesday, January 4, 2011

Ok - the tree is now dropping brown needles all over the floor and since the cat drank all the water in the base, it's so dry that you're afraid that if you turn on the lights, the tree will go up like a torch. Time to get rid of the Christmas tree.

First option - the boy and girl scouts. If you got a blue envelope on your doorknob last week, there will be a Scout on your street Saturday, January 8th.

Place your tree in front of your house next to the street by 8:30 am and a Scout will take it away for recycling.

Except for flocked trees. Nobody wants your flocked tree.

The Scouts suggest a donation of $5 cash or check and ask you to place it in the blue envelope and rubber band it to the tree.

Ok - except I do police blotters for two cities and I've lost my innocence. If the bad guys are ready to pounce on UPS packages left on your porch, grab your wallet when you turn your back to put on a shirt at the gym, steal your mail out of your mailbox, and rifle your car while you're parked at Costco, they will have a field day with all those tidy blue envelopes full of ready cash and checks waiting to be washed and rewritten.

Mail your donation to the address on the envelope or call the number listed to find out where to mail your donation.

Syre Brownie Troop honored as Earth Heroes in Schools

By Craig Degginger

Brownie Troop 41245 from Syre Elementary in Shoreline was recently honored as a group of "Earth Heroes at Schools" by King County Executive Dow Constantine.

"While these winners of the Earth Heroes at Schools award represent different segments of the school community, they all share a passion for the environment and for taking a hands-on approach to improving the world around us," Executive Dow Constantine said.

For their annual service project, this determined group of second- and third- grade scouts at Syre challenged themselves and their entire school by starting a lunchroom recycling program. They researched what materials could be collected for recycling, contacted their local recycling service for information, met with the school principal and custodian, and recruited parents and students to monitor the program and educate others on how to properly use it. Through a lunchtime presentation and a school newsletter article, the girls provided information about the program. As a result of the program, lunchtime waste was cut in half.

Executive Constantine presented certificates to the Syre troop in a ceremony at Maplewood Greens Golf Course in Renton.

This year the program recognized a record number of Earth Heroes countywide: Seven teachers, the Brownie troop, a student, three custodians, a parent and eight schools.

Many of the winners also participate in the King County Green Schools Program to take specific actions to conserve natural resources and reduce waste.
