UW Bothell Campus

First-year students at the University of Washington Bothell are typically matched with a student mentor who will help them with their transition to life in college and speak from experience about how to succeed.

This year, the 829 incoming first-year students of the Class of 2023 were assigned a specific Personal, Academic and Community (PAC) Coach over the summer. Students started meeting with their PAC coaches before the start of autumn quarter as part of the First Year Advising and Orientation Program.

“Our goal is to help students identify goals, develop an action plan, follow through with their plan and make use of campus resources,” said Chancellor Wolf Yeigh. “The PAC coaches are just one of several programs UW Bothell has in place to foster the success of all students.”

Of the incoming first-year students this autumn quarter, 96% are Washington residents, with 57% coming from King County and 27% from Snohomish County. Forty percent of them would be the first in their immediate families to earn a four-year degree.

Of the 666 incoming transfer students, 91% are Washington residents, and 43% would be the first in their immediate families to earn a four-year degree. Of the incoming transfer students, 86% are transferring from a Washington state community college.

Thirty-six percent of incoming first-year students and 34% of incoming transfers are eligible for federal Pell Grants, the federal aid to students in financial need.

These students have an exciting future: A 2019 report by Seattle-based PayScale ranked UW Bothell No. 3 in the country, after analyzing top schools with the highest earning potential. In addition, according to CNBC Make It, UW Bothell ranks No. 2 in the nation for public colleges that provided the greatest return on investment.

In the 2018-19 academic year, UW Bothell graduated 2,218 students. Of the 1,982 undergraduates, 61% graduated debt free; among the 236 graduate students, 54% graduated debt free.

“We continue to hold the faculty-student relationship paramount while building pathways that provide students in our region with access to a broad array of majors and programs that align with their goals,” said Sharon A. Jones, vice chancellor for academic affairs.

Overall, 28% of UW Bothell students are enrolled in first-year and pre-major programs. Of students enrolled in a major field of study, the percentages are as follows.
  • 28% School of Science, Technology, Engineering / Mathematics
  • 16% School of Interdisciplinary Arts / Sciences
  • 15% School of Business
  • 9% School of Nursing / Health Studies
  • 4% School of Educational Studies

Among all students at UW Bothell, the top five cities of residence are:
  • Seattle (14%)
  • Bothell (8%)
  • Bellevue (7%)
  • Lynnwood (6%)
  • Everett (6%)

Here is another demographic snapshot of the UW Bothell student body:
  • 36% White
  • 30% Asian
  • 10% Hispanic or Latino
  • 9% international (nonresident alien)
  • 7% Black or African American
  • 6% indicated two or more races
  • Less than 1% indicated Native American or Alaska Native
  • 2% did not indicate a race or ethnicity

UW Bothell has a total student body of 5,936. There are 5,364 undergraduate students and 572 graduate or professional students enrolled this fall. The average class size is 30 for undergraduates and 19 for graduate/professional students.

Since opening in 1990, UW Bothell has 23,600 graduates of whom 88% live and work in the state of Washington.

The campus is in Bothell, just off SR522.

Washington launches consumer protection resource for college, vocational students

Wednesday, November 20, 2019

Washington has a new way for postsecondary students to file consumer protection complaints.

Consumer complaints cover a variety of topics. Some of these include false or misleading advertising, failure to follow the school’s own published policies, and violations of state requirements.

The state's new online portal is for students attending any college or vocational school in Washington, as well as student loan borrowers.

Before, students and borrowers had to seek out the correct state agency to handle their complaints. But in 2017, a report noted that this was confusing for consumers.

Three different state agencies share primary oversight of approximately 600 private for- and non-profit postsecondary schools in Washington. These schools serve close to 50,000 students — over 10 percent of all postsecondary enrollments.

Now, any student-loan borrower or student attending a college or vocational school in Washington can go to one place to file a consumer protection complaint. The state's new online portal will route complaints to the agency with jurisdiction. The site will also connect users to resources and information about next steps.

The state Legislature directed three agencies to create one central complaint portal
  • Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC),
  • Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board (Workforce Board), and
  • Department of Licensing (DOL)

The Department of Health's Nursing Commission and State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) also have oversight over private and public postsecondary schools. To develop the portal, WSAC collaborated with the Workforce Board and DOL and consulted with DOH and SBCTC.

The Washington Student Achievement Council is committed to increasing educational opportunities and attainment in Washington.

By Frank Kleyn

On Wednesday, November 13, 2019 local author Christine Day visited the Lake Forest Park Elementary School library to share her debut middle grade novel "I Can Make This Promise” with sixth grade students.

This author visit was made possible by Third Place Books. Christine Day is a local author and grew up in the North Seattle area, though she now lives in Lake Stevens.

Christine attended Meridian Park, Einstein, and Shorewood. Inspired by her family's history, Christine’s novel tells the story of a girl who uncovers her family's secrets -- and finds her own Native American identity.

Lake Forest Park students asked excellent questions and Christine provided them with her inspiration to become an author as well as the particulars of the writing and publishing process.

Third Place Books has Christine’s book in stock for all interested readers. Lake Forest Park students loved the book and Christine’s visit and extend a heartfelt thank you to Third Place Books and Christine Day!

Third Place Books is located on the upper level of Town Center, intersection of Bothell and Ballinger Way NE, Lake Forest Park. 206-366-3333.

On Wednesday, November 13, 2019 Douglas Carl, owner of "A Better Day Salon" at the Lake Forest Park Town Center visited the Lake Forest Park school library to deliver new dictionaries to every fourth grader at Lake Forest Park Elementary School.

Douglas taught students that as fourth graders they are moving from “learning to read” to “reading to learn” and a dictionary is a wonderful tool that can be used for learning at school and home.

He spoke about the importance of using words to solve problems and how he hopes “A Better Day Salon’s” donation can help spread goodwill and knowledge throughout the Lake Forest Park community. Principal Aimee Miner, and Douglas worked together to hand the books out to the thankful students.

Teachers and students look forward to using the dictionaries in the classroom and at home. The Lake Forest Park staff and students are very appreciative of this generous donation and look forward to using the dictionaries.

Nov 6 open house at North Seattle French School in Shoreline

Saturday, November 2, 2019

"BIENVENUE SHORELINE!"
OPEN HOUSE

The French immersion and bilingual preschool and K-5 elementary school will host its first open house Wednesday, November 6, 2019 from 6 - 7:30pm at its new home at the Shoreline Center, Wing F, 18560 1st Ave NE, Shoreline WA 98155 in the building directly behind the Senior Center.

North Seattle French School's new head of school, Gilles Faure, and his staff welcome families from Shoreline and surrounding communities to its open house. It's an opportunity for parents to learn about the school, its curriculum and core values, and the benefits of French immersion and bilingual education. Meet faculty and parents and ask questions about the NSFS experience and the enrollment process.

North Seattle French School (NSFS) moved to the Shoreline Center in July 2019. Our new location significantly increases the school’s classroom space and enables NSFS to continue to grow and thrive in the coming years.

NSFS opened in the fall of 2013 with a single kindergarten class. The school was founded by a handful of parents who dreamed of a local French-American school and worked hard to realize their dream. Since 2013, we have grown by one grade each year and have added a part-time preschool. At the end of the 2018-2019 school year, we graduated our first 5th grade class, achieving our goal of becoming a full bilingual elementary in the greater Seattle area.

Op-Ed: Shoreline PTA Council endorses Shoreline Proposition 1

Wednesday, October 16, 2019

At our September 23, 2019 General Membership Meeting, the Shoreline PTA Council 6.12 voted to endorse Shoreline Proposition 1.

The proposed new Shoreline Aquatics, Recreation and Community Center, along with improvements at four area parks, is a strong investment in creating active gathering spaces for our families – including, notably, a fully accessible play area for people of all physical abilities.

Our primary reason for support, however, is the inclusion of an eight-lane pool for recreational and competitive swimming and diving, along with a fully accessible viewing area.

The Shoreline School District currently does not have a long-term facility that can support the swim and dive teams from Shorecrest and Shorewood High Schools.

High school swimming is one of the very few non-cut sports that any student can join, including beginning swimmers, and this allows students from all backgrounds to participate in a sport during their high school career.

Swim and dive team students and their families attended many city and school board meetings in the last year to advocate for the continuation of a sport that has created an especially tight-knit and inclusive community.

PTA supports the critical role physical activity plays in increasing physical and mental health in children and understands that fitness and engagement in physical activities are associated with not only greater academic achievement and cognitive functioning, but through team sports can also enhance a sense of belonging and self-confidence.

It is imperative that we build strong communities that include safe, inclusive and accessible parks and community centers.

Shoreline is in need of a long-term facility that can comfortably host regional swim meets, maximize participation of year-round swimmers and attract an increasingly diverse population into the swim community.

Help ensure that high school swimming can continue in the Shoreline School District. Please support Proposition 1.

Silje Sodal and Amy Reed
Co-Presidents
Shoreline PTA Council 6.12

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has named University of Washington Bothell’s Dan Jaffe, a professor of environmental chemistry, to its list of air quality experts.

The 12 experts will assist the federal agency’s Chartered Clean Air Advisory Committee, providing technical expertise in a review of the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for particulate matter and ozone.

Jaffe is an expert both on ozone, a key ingredient of smog, and on particulate matter, the tiny bits in smoke that may be breathed deep into the lungs.

“This appointment represents an opportunity to use my scientific expertise to support the EPA’s decision-making,” Jaffe said.
“The long-term goal should be that our environmental laws, rules and regulations be based on the best available science and be designed to protect public health with an adequate margin of safety.”

Jaffe also is a recognized expert on the global transport of pollutants through the atmosphere. He leads research into local, regional and global pollution sources in the western United States. In addition, he is chair of the Physical Sciences Division in UW Bothell’s School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

“Dr. Jaffe is known internationally as an expert on air pollution and especially on ozone. We’re delighted that the EPA has recognized his work and that he is able to add his voice to the decision-making process,” said Marc Servetnick, acting dean of the School of STEM.

The EPA clean air committee had requested additional experts. The EPA administrator selected them from people who were publicly nominated.

Monday, September 16, 2019

“How to Be a Powerful Advocate for your Gifted Student"
Presented by Marcia Holland, Northwest Gifted Child Association
Monday, September 30, 2019 from 6:30pm - 8:30pm
Meridian Park Elementary School
17077 Meridian Ave N, Shoreline 98133

Gifted students have complex needs and being labeled "gifted" doesn't mean school is easy for them. In this meeting, sharpen your set of "tools" to better advocate for your child with the teacher, principal, school and district. Such as:

The steps of effective advocacy
  • Barriers that need to be overcome to be persuasive
  • What it is about Highly Capable kids that leads to the need for accommodation
  • The legal basis that supports advocacy for Highly Capable students
  • Specific tactics that advocates can request
  • What to say to your own children about giftedness so they can also be advocates
We welcome all interested families to attend this free speaker event! Register at Eventbrite

Marcia Holland has been involved in supporting excellence in education for children since her sons were students in the Renton School District in the 1970s and 1980s. Marcia has served on the board of the Northwest Gifted Child Association on and off over the last 30 years.

Her focus has always been educating others – parents, educators, administrators and legislators – about the unique learning needs of children who learn at markedly faster and more complex rates than their chronological peers. Having been an unserved gifted child herself, she remembers the sense of frustration, isolation and “marching in place” of her K-12 experience.

The new school is being constructed
next to the current building

Construction work at Kellogg Middle School is visible now, with steel structure emerging and a huge crane.

Because Kellogg has so much property, there will be no disruption to current classes. The new school will be built next to the old, and when it is completed the students will move in.
