National Merit® $2500 Scholarship winners from Shorewood and Kenmore

Monday, June 12, 2017

National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) has announced this year’s National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners, including one each from Shoreline and Kenmore.

The 2,500 Merit Scholar designees were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding Finalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.

National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the Finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors.

Edward R. Yang, Kenmore
Probable career field: Industrial Engineering
Inglemoor HS, Kenmore
NATIONAL MERIT $2500 SCHOLARSHIP
This award is supported by National Merit Scholarship Corporation's own funds.

Peter H. Chou, Shoreline
Probable career field: Environmental Engineering
Shorewood HS, Shoreline
NATIONAL MERIT $2500 SCHOLARSHIP
This award is supported by National Merit Scholarship Corporation's own funds.

These Scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, who appraised a substantial amount of information submitted by both the Finalists and their high schools: the academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from two standardized tests; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the Finalist; and a recommendation written by a high school official.

NMSC finances most of these single-payment National Merit $2500 Scholarships. Corporations and company foundations that sponsor awards through NMSC also help underwrite these scholarships with grants they provide in lieu of paying administrative fees.

Scholars may use their awards at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university.

Shorecrest and SCC students win scholarships from Edmonds Driftwood Players

Wednesday, May 10, 2017

Edmonds Driftwood Players announced four 2017 scholarship winners from the June Martin Fund, and one recipient of the Ralph Eaton Fund (technical theater). The Board of Directors approved each $500 award on April 24, 2017.

Alegra Batara is a senior at Shorecrest High School where she excels both academically and theatrically. She plans to obtain her BFA in musical theater. Her theater passion was ignited when cast in "Annie" with Driftwood Theater, and continued for four seasons. She aims to be an activist for Asian-Americans and other people of color not well represented in the arts.

"I first met Alegra as a very talented 11 year old... Through hard work perseverance and intellect, ...her talent has grown in breadth and depth. She exemplifies the best in what a young actor should be. She encourages and empowers her cast mates. She truly is the 'rising tide raising all of the ships'," Mark Press, Music Director EDP and MCT.

Griffin Price attends Shoreline Community College. His passion for music and theater was ignited in high school where he starred in several productions at Wade James Theater. Well rounded in theater, music and academics, he received an Honorable Mention for Best Actor at 5th Avenue Theater, played in Concert Band, and earned a Certificate of Academic Achievement in high school.

"Griffin arrived early to every rehearsal. He maintained a sense of humor and good spirit through the long hours... He could connect and engage, while still being a leader and example. Whether with peers or adults, he showed maturity beyond his years," Morgan Heetbrink, Teacher, Snohomish High School.

Other winners:

Andrew Kim, senior at Edmonds-Woodway High School
Lawrence McDonnell, senior at Blanchet High School
Rebecca Strom, senior at Henry Jackson High School.

Edmonds Driftwood Players is a volunteer-based, 501(c)3 non-profit community theater which has been entertaining and educating the community since 1958.

Endowment fund honors memory of UW Bothell student killed in Mukilteo

Friday, November 18, 2016

Anna Bui
The family of Anna Bui, the University of Washington Bothell student who was fatally shot at a gathering in Mukilteo, is starting an endowment fund in her memory that would offer scholarships to other students at the University.

Anna’s older siblings, David and Anny Bui, say the study abroad scholarship will assist students whose interests are similar to their adventurous sister’s – those who want to experience what the world has to offer and, at the same time, enrich the lives of others.

The Anna Bui World of Hope Fund will help students who might otherwise be unable to take advantage of such a transformational experience.

Anna didn’t study abroad, but she did travel in Europe for three weeks over the summer, much of the time with her sister.

“And that’s the happiest I’ve seen her,” Anny said. Anna wanted to study abroad to improve her high school Spanish.

The endowment is one way to give back in Anna’s name, said David Bui.

“Anna always had her way with people; it’s hard not to like her. It could be anyone from her employer to someone she just met traveling the world,” he said.

A few weeks after her summer travel, the 19-year-old Everett resident was attending a gathering with friends from Kamiak High School when she and two other people were killed.

One of the other people killed was 19 year old Jake Long, who was an employee at Shoreline Community College.

Jake worked as an employee of Lancer Hospitality on campus and was known by many as a bright and friendly staff member who specialized in making delicious wraps and sandwiches with care for our community each day.
