Shoreline Chamber of Commerce Dollars for Scholars launches online scholarship application

Tuesday, January 28, 2014

Shoreline Chamber of Commerce Dollars for Scholars® officially launched a new website on January 21, 2014 through a new software tool provided by Scholarship America®, Dollars for Scholars’ parent organization.

This new website will allow Shoreline Chamber of Commerce Dollars for Scholars to help students in the community access more scholarships. Through the website, students will have the ability to create an online profile, which allows them to apply for and be matched to multiple scholarships—on both the local and national level—in just a couple of clicks.

Shoreline Chamber of Commerce Dollars for Scholars was able to customize the website to meet its specific needs; including keeping the local community updated on chapter news, events and deadlines; providing information on what’s going on in education on a national level; and giving students and parents a one-stop-shop for chapter scholarships, educational resources, opportunities, and events.

Shoreline Chamber of Commerce Dollars for Scholars is enthusiastic about the capabilities of this new website. It provides a very professional template that contains most standard information that a scholarship website should have. It also provides a flexible formatting to include additional information of particular interest to Shoreline students, which our board can easily modify as events dictate.

The new website also provides the capability for students to fill out applications on line and provides access for Shoreline and Lake Forest Park students to scholarships offered by scholarship sponsors other than the Chamber.

Specific information on our scholarships will not be online for several weeks. However, Shoreline Chamber of Commerce Dollars for Scholars encourages students to begin developing their online profiles now, to assure they are alerted about scholarship opportunities in advance of deadlines. In addition to scholarships, students will also have access to exclusive volunteer and internship opportunities that may be available to them, as well as a wealth of financial aid and college success tools and resources provided by Scholarship America.

About Dollars for Scholars®
Scholarship America’s Dollars for Scholars® program is a national network of nearly 1,100 local chapters, driven by local volunteers that help hometown students in over 3,000 communities across the country. In addition to raising funds and distributing scholarships for students, chapters also provide assistance with college readiness and the financial aid process.

About Scholarship America®
Scholarship America® is the nation’s largest provider of private scholarships, helping students pursue and complete their education beyond high school through local and national scholarship programs, and emergency financial assistance. Scholarship America has distributed more than $2.7 billion in scholarship assistance to more than 1.8 million students over the last 50 years. Local students win Comcast Foundation scholarships

Monday, June 3, 2013

Rhiannon A. Bates, a senior at Shorecrest High School, and Dylan B. Stephens, a senior at Shorewood High School, are among the 90 recipients of the Comcast Foundation’s annual Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program awards in Washington State, the Foundation has announced.

Among Bates’ past and present achievements: volunteering 500 hours with ZooCorps and tutoring Spanish-speaking students; and serving as president of the film club and participating in the swim and dive team, the science club and the Muslin Student Association. At the time the school nominated her for the award, Bates was planning to study zoology at Washington State University.

Kathy France, youth program coordinator for the Woodland Park Zoo Society, wrote to the Comcast Foundation, “Rhiannon is a smart, focused and mature young woman.  She is patient and helpful with our visitors, particularly those who are very young.  She stays current with the content we teach, and makes an extra effort to re-tool her presentations when her audience doesn't understand the concepts.  She is remarkable organized and is faithful with her scheduling - a trait that is greatly appreciated but often not quite "there" with volunteers of this age.  She is a joy to work with.”

Shorewood student Dylan Stephens
awarded Comcast scholarship
Among Stephens’ past and present achievements: serving as an Advanced Care Volunteer at Swedish Edmonds Hospital and participating in Young Life High School Youth Group and as a Wyldlife leader of a middle school youth group. He is president of the senior class and earned a Varsity letter in tennis. At the time the school nominated him for the scholarship, Stephens was planning to pursue pre-med studies at Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA.

The Comcast Leaders and Achievers  Scholarship Program provides $1,000 scholarships to students who strive to achieve their potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their communities, who are involved in their schools, and who serve as models for their fellow students. The philosophy behind the program is to give young people every opportunity to prepare for the future and to engage them in their communities. The program also demonstrates the importance of civic involvement, and the value placed on civic involvement by the business community.

To date, Comcast has awarded nearly $19 million to nearly 19,000 Leaders and Achievers Scholarship winners.

The Comcast Foundation was founded by Comcast Corporation in June 1999 to provide charitable support to qualified nonprofit organizations. Since its inception, the Comcast Foundation has donated more than $123 million to organizations in the communities nationwide that Comcast serves. Information about Comcast in Washington.

Shorewood grad receives scholarship from Northwest Golf Media Association

Sunday, September 9, 2012

Pete Treperinas
Shorewood grad
Northwest Golf Media Association Announces Recipient of Annual Scholarship; University of Washington Student Selected

Pete Treperinas, a senior-to-be at the University of Washington, has been selected as the recipient of the first NWGMA Scholarship, which will be given annually by the Northwest Golf Media Association.

Treperinas, a 21-year-old journalism major interested in a career in sports journalism, is receiving $2,500 from the NWGMA. He is a graduate of Shorewood High School. Treperinas will be formally given the scholarship at the NWGMA banquet being held at Broadmoor Golf Club in Seattle on October 8.

The scholarship is open to all students who are entering their senior year at a Northwest college or university and who have demonstrated an interest and ability in sports journalism. The scholarship is posted at universities in Oregon, Idaho, British Columbia and Washington.

Jeff Shelley, co-founder of the NWGMA and longtime editorial director for Cybergolf, said, “When Bob Spiwak and I founded the NWGMA in 1995, one of my goals was to take the organization to a place where we could justify financially – through member dues and contributions – the creation of an annual scholarship for college students interested in writing about golf after graduation. Though it took 17 years, awarding our first NWGMA Scholarship to Pete is personally very satisfying.”

Treperinas is on schedule to graduate next June. He attended summer school after spending spring in Greece as an exchange student.

“My Greek heritage is a big part of my life,” said Treperinas, whose growing-up years included Greek folk dancing and Greek church activities. He goes by the first name of Pete, but his given name is Panayiotis (Pana-YO-teez).

NWGMA President Tom Cade said, "Pete got the nod over some other strong applicants. One thing that caught the eye of our committee was his involvement in golf, particularly as the two-year captain of his high school team. He obviously is someone who knows and enjoys the game and he has done well in his college studies and as a sportswriter for the UW Daily and in internships at 710 KIRO (ESPN's Seattle affiliate station) and Seattlepi.com.”

Like most journalism students, Treperinas said he can't predict if he will wind up working for a newspaper, magazine, website, radio station or other media outlet. What he is sure about is that the scholarship money will be helpful in his final year of college. “I'll definitely put it to good use,” he said.

“This is the first year we've given a scholarship,” said Cade. “Only students entering their final year of college are eligible because we want to help someone definitely interested in media get to the finish line, not someone experimenting with different majors or unsure what he or she wants to do. We see the scholarship as part of our organization's mission to encourage and assist media coverage of golf in the Northwest and we're pleased to give it to Pete.”

The majority of funding for the NWGMA Scholarship was arranged by NWGMA members John Tipping and Owen Hoskinson, who own and operate the Seattle Golf & Travel Show and the Vancouver (B.C.) Golf & Travel Show. They donated the proceeds from the silent auction at their Seattle show to the scholarship. “Their generous donation has made this scholarship possible,” said Cade.

The Northwest Golf Media Association consists of over 125 golf media and industry professionals in Oregon, Idaho, British Columbia and Washington. It is a 501c7 non-profit organization that was founded in 1995 to assist the coverage of golf in the region. More information on the NWGMA or the NWGMA Scholarship. For information about the banquet on October 8, call 206-890-5339.

Shorecrest student awarded scholarship from The Actuarial Foundation "Math Minds" competition

Wednesday, July 18, 2012

Amy Glaskova, Shorecrest
Scholarship winner
Amy Glaskova, a senior at Shorecrest High School, has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship in the Project Math Minds Competition sponsored by The Actuarial Foundation through Mu Alpha Theta (MAT). Project Math Minds is an actuarial-related project designed for high school students to work on during the school year. Students compete for college scholarship money provided by The Actuarial Foundation. Winners present their projects to other members of the Honor Society at the Mu Alpha Theta National Convention, held this year in Schaumburg, Illinois on July 16, 2012.

The purpose of the Project Math Minds assignment is to introduce the student to the math used by the actuarial profession to manage risk. This year’s assignment challenged participants to complete an estimate of the total cost of attending college and the financial return after leaving college. Participants were asked to choose three different schools, three different financing assumptions and a desired profession in mapping out their estimate. Actuaries develop and evaluate these projects.

While there was no single correct or incorrect answer, projects were rated on the participant’s ability to demonstrate thoughtfulness and understanding of concepts related to finance and the time value of money. What makes the students think like an Actuary in this project are the assumptions and the financial implications of these assumptions.

The Actuarial Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization established in 1994 to help facilitate and broaden the actuarial profession’s contribution to society. The mission of the Foundation is to develop, fund, and execute education, scholarship, and research programs that serve the public and the profession by harnessing the talents and resources of actuaries. The Foundation’s vision is an educated public in pursuit of a secure financial future.

Shoreline Public Schools Foundation awards two Senior Scholarships

Updated 4-16-2012 6:25pm

Sierra Alef-Defoe from Shorecrest and Chris Evans from Shorewood
are the first winners of SPSF Senior Scholarships

Two Shoreline students became the first recipients of the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation’s (SPSF) Senior Scholarships, created to recognize two students each year who demonstrate exceptional volunteerism in the community. Sierra Alef-Defoe from Shorecrest High School and Chris Evans from Shorewood High School each received a $1,000 scholarship.

Sierra and Chris each spoke about their volunteer experiences during the Foundation’s annual Spring Event fundraiser on March 29 at Shoreline Center. Sierra, of Shorecrest, has a 3.8 GPA and plans to study law with an emphasis on children’s health care. In 2006, in memory of her friend Sydney Coxon, Sierra co-founded the Pink Polka Dots junior guild of Seattle Children’s Hospital. Their goal was to raise money for pediatric brain tumor research, and six years later, they’ve raised more than $400,000.

Chris, of Shorewood, maintains a 3.95 GPA. Not only has Chris been a stalwart community and school volunteer, he has successfully enlisted and led other teen volunteers, from high school drama production crews to student canvassing teams for Jay Inslee’s last congressional campaign. Chris is headed to George Washington University next year to study politics.

The Shoreline Public Schools Foundation provides funding for educational enrichment as well as basic educational needs to all students in the Shoreline Public Schools. The Foundation introduced the SPSF Senior Scholarships this year to promote post-high school opportunities for Shoreline students.
