From January to April, two high school seniors in the greater Seattle area are chosen weekly and given a $100 scholarship to acknowledge their commitment.

Kyla Riley, Scholar Athlete of the Week

Kyla Riley is a superb example of an all-around great student, athlete and member of her community. Between the 15 nominations received, Kyla’s dedication and hard work is reflected in all those that come in contact with her.

“Kyla is mature beyond her years and has been a great role model for her teammates and fellow colleagues over the years,” Kelly Donyes, employer at GYMagine Gymnastics, said. “She has had to personally struggle with personal illness that would have sidelined many us, but Kyla found the strength and courage to continue to support and excel in sports and school.”

Kyla was diagnosed with a difficult medical illness that causes extreme fatigue, yet it has never slowed her down.

Kyla has been involved in many sports throughout her years at Shorewood High School, including: diving team for four years and named Captain her senior year; gymnastics team for four years –and captain for three years; and she has been on the drill team for two years, helping her team win 2011 State Champions.

“She is an amazing young woman who has a bright future ahead,” Coach Susan Riley said.

Two Shorewood gymnasts receive local scholarship

Monday, December 12, 2011

Dick and Diane Chapman, parents of Shorewood Alumnus Doriane Chapman (Gunnels) have been supportive of high school gymnastics since their daughter started at Shorewood in 1992. Over the last 19 years their support has not wavered.

Shorewood Gymnastics Coach Susan Riley wanted to honor the Chapmans for their long time support of the Shorewood Gymnastics program by naming a scholarship after them. Dick and Diane were honored and in turn wanted to help fund the scholarship.

Kyla Riley and Kristie Wong

This year two Shorewood gymnasts, Seniors Kyla Riley and Kristie Wong were selected to receive the first annual Dick and Diane Chapman-Shorewood Gymnastics Senior Scholarship. Riley and Wong will each receive $500 towards their college education, donated by the Chapmans.

Sadly, Dick passed away on November 25, 2011 and was not able to take part in the selection of this year’s winners. Diane and Doriane made the selection in Dick’s honor.

The goal of the scholarship is to honor Shorewood senior gymnasts that display leadership, school athletic involvement and character.

Kyla Riley was selected for her leadership (three years gymnastics captain, 1 year diving captain), school athletic involvement (four years gymnastics, four years diving and two years Drill Team), and her character as explained by Shorewood Math Teacher Corrie Crowder in her letter of recommendation for Kyla.
“For a painfully long time, Kyla had health issues that made it difficult for her to come to school. Amazingly, Kyla stayed on top of her academics and athletics…During this time she demonstrated extraordinary strength of character and determination. She always worked hard and never gave up.” Kyla plans to study Kinesiology at Vangaurd University.
Kristie Wong was selected for her leadership (cheer captain), school athletic involvement (four years gymnastics, two years cheer), working two jobs, and her character as described by Shorewood Science Teacher Nathan Davis in his letter of recommendation for Kristie.
“Kristie’s academic’s school involvement and interpersonal skills will assure her success in life.”
Kristie hopes to attend the University of Washington and study Medicine.

No - not really.

But several community leaders are willing to put themselves in the “slammer” for the sake of education.

Representative Ruth Kagi, Senator-Elect Marayln Chase, Representative-Elect Cindy Ryu, and Shoreline City Council members Chris Eggen and Chris Roberts have agreed to participate in the Shoreline Chamber of Commerce "Dollars for Scholars - Jail and Bail" taking place this Saturday evening, November 20 at the Shoreline Conference Center. The event starts at 5:30 pm.

The Jail and Bail is part of the annual Dinner Auction of the Shoreline Chamber of Commerce . This year is a western theme, hence the inspiration to do a Jail and Bail for the Dollars For Scholars portion of the evening.

During the auction, the community leaders will be “arrested” and put in a “jail” constructed for this purpose. Minimum Bail is $500 each. Bail money raised for their release will go to the "Dollars For Scholars" program that every year awards scholarships to graduating seniors who attend Shoreline schools.

Since the beginning of the Shoreline Chamber Dollars For Scholars event, over $60,000 in scholarships have been awarded.

For more details or to register to attend, go to the Chamber webpage.

Shoreline Goodwill student wins scholarship award

Wednesday, June 9, 2010

By David Sandler

Roseanne Trinidad (photo), a graduate of Shoreline Goodwill’s Retail and Customer Service Training Program, accepted an H. Martin Smith Jr. Scholarship Award at Goodwill’s Appreciation Breakfast on June 8 at Benaroya Hall.

When she arrived in the United States from the Philippines, her inability to speak English confidently made it difficult to find work. The Retail and Customer Service Training Program at Shoreline Goodwill helped her become more outgoing while learning valuable jobs skills. Now she works two jobs to support herself here and help her four siblings in the Philippines, all while taking classes at Shoreline Community College. Roseanne’s goal is to earn a bachelor’s degree and get a job in the medical field.

“I’m just a simple person who dreams about finishing school and lifting up my family from poverty,” she says. “I believe that when I finish my studies, I will have a better future, because education is the key to success.”

“We are proud of everything that Roseanne has achieved since coming to this country. This scholarship will help her continue on the path to getting a college education and a good job so she can have a better future,” said Barbara Nabors-Glass, Vice President of Job Training and Education.

The scholarship program was established in 2003 to honor the memory of H. Martin Smith Jr., a long-time member of the Goodwill Board of Directors who was instrumental in raising the profile of Goodwill in the community. He also worked to expand the programs in order to help more people.

Shoreline Goodwill is part of Seattle Goodwill Industries, a private, nonprofit organization that has served the central and northern Puget Sound since 1923. Its free job training and education programs and services help low-income and underserved people obtain the skills they need to secure employment so they may achieve economic self-sufficiency. For more information about Goodwill programs, please call toll-free 1-877-GIVE4GOOD or visit the website.
