Edmonds Driftwood Players announces 2024 Scholarship winners

Saturday, August 10, 2024

Edmonds WA – August 9, 2024. Following Board approval on July 31, 2024, Edmonds Driftwood Players is proud to announce our 3 scholarship recipients.

Daryna Ilyashenko is the recipient of the Ralph Eaton Technical Scholarship,
Elizabeth Howlett is the recipient of the Theatre Arts Scholarship,
Josh Kretz is the recipient of the AC & Norma Gehrig Memorial Scholarship.

Each will be awarded $1,000 payable to their school of choice.

The Ralph Eaton Technical Scholarship honors a long-time member who spent many hours designing and/or building sets and was our volunteer Technical Director for many years. It was created by his loving wife, Judy Anne Eaton, a longtime member and volunteer.

The Theatre Arts Scholarship has been a long-standing award established in 1988.

The AC & Norma Gehrig Memorial Scholarship was created by our longtime member, volunteer, past board director and office manager, Keith Gehrig to honor his parents.

Daryna Ilyashenko
Daryna Ilyashenko is a 2024 graduate of Meadowdale High School and is planning to pursue a major in acting and original works and minoring in costume construction at Cornish College of The Arts in Seattle.

“Theater has helped me understand myself more, it has taught me my strengths and weaknesses. Due to this Theater community, I was able to grow through being vulnerable. I am so ecstatic to be able to continue my journey and acting at Cornish College of the arts and Seattle.”

"While balancing a lead role and being light crew head, Daryna also managed to keep up her stellar grades, work a part time job, and take care of her younger siblings. Talent is important, of course, and Daryna’s talents are plentiful: but what makes her stand out is her drive to pour her all into anything and everything she does."

-Jacqueline Meyners, Theatre Teacher and Director of Meadowdale Players

2022 Shorecrest graduate
Elizabeth “Bobby” Howlett
Elizabeth “Bobby” Howlett is a 2022 graduate of Shorecrest High School who has completed her sophomore year at USC School of Dramatic Arts with an emphasis on acting for stage & screen, voice, and script analysis.

She hopes to study abroad in London at the British American Dramatic Academy (BADA) for Spring semester and plans to graduate in May 2026.

In her words: “Acting has become a way for me to embrace my uniqueness. I can better show empathy to others both as an actor and a person. This allows me to connect better with characters as an artist, and also collaborate with people with differing perspectives and opinions.”

"I was always delighted with Bobby’s approach to the work. Too often my students fail to wed their joy, freedom and sense of play with the rigor necessary to train in a field this demanding."
-Paul Urcioli, USC School of Dramatic Arts

Josh Kretz
Josh Kretz is a 2023 graduate of Meadowdale High School and has completed his freshman year at Western Washington University where he is working toward a degree in theater arts with a concentration in education with further plans to obtain a master’s in teaching.

“My goal is to become a theater teacher, so I can educate students on the importance of Theater and give them an opportunity to find their voice and become their own advocate. It will also give me a chance to continue being an advocate for autism and to raise awareness and acceptance. I want to continue to work towards making the arts accessible to anyone and everyone.”

"As Marketing crew head, Josh has taken his work one step further, and has developed into an incredible leader. Not only does he delegate tasks, but he leads his team in bonding activities, gets input from each team member on important decisions, and works with each of them to create a powerful and effective marketing strategy. Josh has bloomed as a leader and advocate in the program."
-Jacqueline Meyners, Theatre Teacher and Director of Meadowdale Players

On May 13, 2024 Washington State Alpha Delta Chapter of A∆K, an international organization of women educators dedicated to excellence in education, altruism, and world understanding, presented two scholarships to local students planning to become teachers.

This scholarship for $1,000 is offered annually to graduating seniors from Shorecrest, Shorewood and Edmonds-Woodway who excel academically, are involved in activities and community service, and have demonstrated a desire to work with children.

This year’s outstanding winners are Darci Dalziel and Ava McGinness!

Chris, Ava, and Leslie McGinness

Ava McGinness
, the daughter of Chris and Leslie McGinness, will graduate from Edmonds-Woodway High School this spring. She has a combination of abilities, experiences and an approach to life that will make her a wonderful teacher. A committed student who recognizes the role of education in self-growth and accomplishment, she has received excellent grades in such rigorous courses as IB English, IB Marine Biology, IB Business & Management, AP Calculus, and three years of Spanish..

Ava credits a particular group of teachers for giving her the confidence to believe that all things are possible if you set your heart to it. She would like to inspire her future students to have that confidence to overcome boundaries in their lives and become their best selves.

Ava has already had opportunities to do that as a lifeguard and swim instructor at Yost Pool, the captain of her club volleyball team and player on her school team, a volunteer in her church nursery, a teacher of young children during church mission trips to Texas and Colorado, and a babysitter. Ava also works at Crista Senior Living where the residents appreciate her commitment to exceptional service with kindness and a smile.

Ava plans to attend Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, AZ to pursue a degree in elementary education. She hopes to teach second grade. With her positive, kind attitude, love of children, and her many abilities, she will be an asset to any school staff.

Darci with her mother Mindy Dalziel

Shorecrest High School senior, Darci Dalziel
is the daughter of Don and Mindy Dalziel. She has the experience and qualities to make an excellent teacher. Coming from a family of educators, she already knows the dedication and hours outside the classroom needed to be an effective and supportive teacher and has been inspired by her parents and former teachers, such as Ms. Libby of LFP Elementary, to be that teacher.

Darci is a member of the National Honor Society and has maintained a 3.9GPA while taking UW Pre-Calculus, AP US History, AP Calculus, and AP Environmental Science. She also took three years of Spanish, Treble Choir and Advanced Mixed Choir. Darci performs with the Shorecrest Flag Team, and is a member of the Asian American Pacific Islander Culture Club.

An exceptional athlete, Darci is a team player and a leader. She was a standout on the SC Varsity Girls Track and Field team four years and served as captain twice. Soccer is her first love! She played four years of Varsity Soccer at SC, being selected for All-League and All-Area awards, and served as captain this year. She also played Club Premier Soccer two years and was a State Qualifier this year.

Darci has already put her desire to work with children in practice as a member of Natural Helpers, a coach for summer soccer camps, and a volunteer at Lake Forest Park Elementary and Kellogg MS. After earning her degree in Elementary Education at St. Martin’s University in Lacey, Washington, Darci hopes to return to this area to teach. We hope she does!

Edmonds Driftwood Players announces 2023 Scholarship winners

Wednesday, July 19, 2023

Edmonds, WA – July 17, 2023 – Following Board approval on June 26, 2023, Edmonds Driftwood Players is proud to announce our two scholarship recipients.

Ari Lemley is recipient of the Ralph Eaton Technical Scholarship and Elise McFarland is recipient of the Theatre Arts Scholarship. Each will be awarded $500 payable to their school of choice.

The 2023 Theatre Arts Scholarship was generously funded by an anonymous donor to honor and acknowledge the over 20 years of service of EDP’s longtime member, Joanne Branch.

The Ralph Eaton Technical Scholarship honors a long-time member who spent many hours designing and/or building sets and was our volunteer Technical Director for many years.

Ari Lemley
Ari Lemley
is a 2023 graduate of Edmonds Heights K-12 with plans to attend Western Washington University to pursue a BA majoring in Theatre. Ari is no stranger to EDP having attended our Teen Troupe Summer Camp from 2016 to 2019. Ari intends to pursue additional education to further his skills as an actor, director, and teacher.

His passion is to teach others the joy of theater. “I think it would be very good for the kids to have a queer role model in their lives, especially because theater draws in so many queer kids.”

Throughout, he has demonstrated an ability to lead his peers in work ethic, generosity in acting and off stage, and immense intellectual curiosity.
Working with Ari has been a pleasure from his first audition. He is charismatic, humble, and able… and an asset to every cast and ensemble in which he is placed.
--Christopher Puckett, Voice Instructor at Edmonds Heights K-12.

Elise McFarland
Elise McFarland
is entering her 3rd year at University of North Carolina School of the Arts working toward her BFA in Acting. Elise also attended EDP’s 2019 Teen Troupe Summer Camp as well as performing in Mr. Scrooge on EDP’s Mainstage in 2016.

“There were many times this past year where I doubted my ability as an actor, and consequently my worth as a person. But keeping in mind before I went onstage that what I was doing was not about me, but about connecting to other people and making them feel less alone, ultimately allowed my brain to transform those thoughts into whispers instead of screams.”
“During a time where the UNCSA community lost a member of our student body to suicide, I experienced a newfound urge within myself to create work that I was proud of, partly because I’d struggled all of first semester with how I felt about myself as an actor and I wanted to change my trajectory, but mostly because the person we lost no longer had the opportunity to share their art with the world.”

Edmonds Driftwood Players is a volunteer-based 501(c)(3) non-profit community theatre with the mission to produce live theatre that entertains, enriches, and engages the community. Established in 1958, it is one of the oldest continually operating community theatres in Washington State.

Marin Cady and Kaylee Logan, both seniors at Shorewood High School, were recently selected by Washington Alpha Delta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa to receive a scholarship for a future educator.

Alpha Delta Kappa is an international organization of women educators who support in education, families and communities, and world understanding.

This $1,000 scholarship is awarded by the Washington Alpha Delta Chapter to a graduating senior who has demonstrated high academic performance, involvement in activities and community service, and a true desire to work with children. Marin knew she wanted to be a teacher from an early age and has displayed her interest in working with children by tutoring elementary through high school in a wide range of subjects and situations, participating in Link to help incoming freshmen integrate to high school, and providing childcare for young children through fifth grade at her church.

Although she is still open to subjects and levels, Marin is drawn to the middle school age where students are discovering themselves. She has always been passionate about history and would love to engage students in its importance in social justice and solving today’s problems.

Marin plans to attend Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon.

Sno-King School Retirees award scholarships to two Shorewood students

Saturday, April 22, 2023

Sno-King School Retirees have chosen four students to receive $2500 scholarships for the 2023-2024 school year to begin their studies as future teachers. Our unit consists of retired educators from Edmonds, Northshore, and Shoreline School Districts.

Through the generosity of a former member, Winnie Smith, we will be able to offer each of these students an additional three years of financial help to become an educator.

Marin Cady, scholarship winner
Two of these recipients are from Shorewood High School, Marin Cady and Sophia Calandrillo

Marin will be pursuing her degree at Lewis and Clark College with a goal of teaching history to middle school students.

Marin has spent many hours tutoring other students and this has solidified her desire to be a teacher.

She plays softball with her school team and year long with her select team.

Marin also is a violinist with the Shorewood Symphony Orchestra.

We will watch Marin grow and succeed in the next four years and marvel at her accomplishments.

Sophia Calandrillo, scholarship winner
Sophia
also plans a teaching career after she receives her degree from UCLA.

She has been very active in school and the community with tutoring also taking up much of her time.

Sophia has run cross country and track while being very involved in community projects with Rotary International where she was the president of Key Club.

Sophia will continue to work hard for her goals and will be a wonderful teacher!
