Richmond Beach Saltwater Park Sunday evening

There is an air quality alert in effect for King County until noon on Monday. This is the second extension, so hope for a nice, strong wind to sweep out the wildfire smoke.

No Olympics, no Puget Sound

We had the dubious distinction of having the worst air quality in the nation on Sunday. Lake Forest Park was clear in the morning but joined the rest of Sound in the afternoon.

Tuesday, August 1, 2023 will be one of the lowest tides of the year. Monday's low tide was a bonanza for children and other beachgoers

Scene on the Sound: Cruise ship and Nimitz as seen from Richmond Beach

Theresa Williams of Richmond Beach captured this view of the Nimitz coming home as the Norwegian Encore was leaving Seattle headed for Alaska.

Per Wikipedia, "USS Nimitz (CVN-68) is an aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, and the lead ship of her class. One of the largest warships in the world, she was laid down, launched, and commissioned as CVAN-68, "aircraft carrier, attack, nuclear powered", but she was later redesignated as CVN-68, "aircraft carrier, multi-mission, nuclear-powered", on 30 June 1975, as part of a fleet-wide realignment that year."

Scene on the Sound: Yellow stuff in the water

Lines of yellow stuff floating in the Salish Sea

Readers have commented on the long strands of yellow floating in the water off Richmond Beach.

The senior oceanographer at the Department of Ecology said this appears to be a Noctiluca bloom that has been observed in this region. Noctiluca is a dinoflagellate (type of plankton) the size of a millet grain and has been blooming in Central Sound and Whidbey Basin for a month.

Noctiluca blooms are generally not toxic to people and pets, but we do not recommend swimming in these blooms.

The blooms appear orange in color and while decomposing can appear yellow in color, especially near shorelines.

Low tide at Edmonds Beach

There were no guided tours by naturalists but plenty of beach available at Edmonds at this low tide on Monday, June 5, 2023.

Sea creatures like to live under and around docks and piers. They are only visible when the tide goes out, so these folk are taking advantage of the very low tide to check out the beach life.
