The cruise ship Norwegian Bliss sailed out of Puget Sound on Friday, July 1, 2022, headed for Alaska.

As the 3rd ship in the Breakaway Plus class, Norwegian Bliss is designed with features and amenities to offer guests the ultimate Alaska cruising experience.

Scene over the Sound: Jets in formation

Sunday, June 26, 2022

Story and photo by Jan Hansen

This early afternoon, June 25, 2022 a group of jets flew down the Sound like Blue Angels. They flew high, but were very impressive. There was a formation of four with a fifth flying above them. I was quite certain that they were from the base on Whidbey Island.

My neighbor helped me by sharing that NAS Whidbey has electronic warfare squadrons that fly the EA-18Gs variant of the FA -18 airframe; it is probably a group of them that flew by.

Non Sibi Sed Patriae, and like the Coast Guard, Semper Paratus!

Story and photos by Jan Hansen

The US Naval salvage/rescue ship, Grasp T-ARS-51 sailed out shortly after noon today.

Close behind her wake was a larger US Navy ship. I could not see a number on her hulk, and this ship did not present on the Marine Traffic application.
I guess there are some things we are not supposed to know.

Scene on the Sound: Canadian frigate HMCS Ottawa

Saturday, June 18, 2022

This morning I spotted this vessel cruising past Jefferson Head. She is the HMCS Ottawa.

Here are the basics from Wikipedia:

HMCS Ottawa is a Royal Canadian Navy Halifax-class frigate. Ottawa is the twelfth and final ship of the Halifax class that were built as part of the Canadian Patrol Frigate Project. She is the fourth vessel to carry the name HMCS Ottawa. The first three were named for the Ottawa River.

This ship is the first named for Canada's national capital, the City of Ottawa. She is assigned to Maritime Forces Pacific (MARPAC) and is homeported at HMC Dockyard, CFB Esquimalt.

Ottawa serves on MARPAC missions protecting Canada's sovereignty in the Pacific Ocean and enforcing Canadian laws in its territorial sea and Exclusive Economic Zone.

Ottawa has also been deployed on missions throughout the Pacific and to the Indian Ocean; specifically the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea on anti-terrorism operations.

Scene on the Sound: Standing in the middle of Puget Sound

RB Saltwater Park photo by Barbara Twaddell

Barbara Twaddell said it best: "I felt like I was standing in the middle of Puget Sound." She was at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park and sent a picture to prove it!

Richmond Beach was a good spot for seagulls to fish - shallow water and not a lot of people.

This is in Edmonds - the part of the beach that is normally under water. Wayne Pridemore has promised me that he is not lying on the ground to take photos like this.

I think it's a safe assumption that the green layer seldom sees the light of day.

That's Point Wells in the background. The oil tanks are not beautiful, but imagine it filled with enormous apartment buildings.

Not sure what they were trying to catch in the little net but this youngster doesn't look too excited about wading in cold water.

Lee Lageschulte says that she has never seen so many people at the dog park.

The low tides will continue for a few days until the moon stops wobbling in its orbit - but we have seen the lowest tides. I wonder what the beaches look like in Japan?

Scene on the Sound: yet another very very low tide

Thursday, June 16, 2022

Walking on to the ferry has taken on a whole new meaning.

Wednesday's tide was even lower than Tuesday's. SpaceWeather.com says the moon is wobbling a bit in its orbit and that is causing the strong, low tides. We'll have another low tide Thursday but it won't top Wednesday's.

SpaceWeather was pretty casual about the moon wobbling. They're much more interested in geomagnetic storms and what they can do to east coast cities.

Beachgoers are reminded that tidepool critters are not used to being exposed to the air like this. Please don't step on them or pick them up.

You actually are not supposed to take anything away from the beach. Those shells are an important part of the marine environment.

The passenger walkway to the ferry is designed to rise and fall with the tides. I can only imagine the angle with these low tides. Walk-on passengers probably need climbing gear.

Scene on the Sound: Super low tide

Wednesday, June 15, 2022

I saw a notice that the tide would be extra low on Tuesday. No kidding.

Two observations: I have never seen the front of this breakwater. And it always amazes me that the ferry can dock when the water is so low.

I was on a field trip under the old dock during a very low tide and we could walk within a dozen feet of the end of the dock. Either the ferries have an incredibly shallow draught or there's a drop off at the end of the pier. Feel free to inform me.

The field trip was for an introductory oceanography class from the UW. The most valuable class I have ever taken, it taught me about Puget Sound and its influence on everything around us. It should be required in schools.

Scene on the Sound: The USAV Worthy

Wednesday, June 8, 2022

USAV Worthy. Photo by John Wolfe.

The USAV Worthy (T-AGOS-14) is a Missile Range Instrumentation Ship currently operated by the United States Army, classified as a Special Vessel / Military Ops, with equipment to detect ballistic missiles.

Originally, the USAV Worthy was a Stalwart-class Modified Tactical Auxiliary General Ocean Surveillance Ship of the United States Navy, launched in 1988.

Stalwart class ships were originally designed to collect underwater acoustical data in support of Cold War anti-submarine warfare operations in the 1980s. (Wikipedia)

USNS Worthy was struck from the Navy registry in 1993 and modified to be Kwajalein Mobile Range Safety System (KMRSS) Worthy, a missile range instrumentation ship at Kwajalein Atoll's Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site (RTS), operated by the United States Army. (Wikipedia)

The Kwajalein Mobile Range Safety System (KMRSS) is installed on the Worthy superstructure to support remote site launch activities. The Worthy also provides logistical and other instrumentation support for remote site operations.

The Worthy was also here in February.

The Low Tide Beach Walks are fairly informal events. A beach naturalist will be on hand at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park at the designation times. The naturalist will explain the various creatures and features to be found at the beach to anyone who wants to gather round and listen.

Here's the schedule for the whole summer:

Scene on the Sound: cruise ships continue

Tuesday, May 10, 2022

Cruise ships continue to sail in spite of the experience of a Carnival Cruise Line ship from Miami that docked in Seattle with 100 cases of COVID-19 on board.

I think that this one is an Ovation of the Seas ship. (Feel free to correct me). Lee says it's the biggest one she has personally seen since the pandemic shut-down.
