Scene on the Sound: USCGC Alert is prepared to serve her country

Saturday, June 12, 2021

USCGC ALERT (WMEC-630)

The ALERT is at all times prepared to serve her country. Whether it is Maritime Homeland Security, Law Enforcement, Drug Interdiction, Fisheries Enforcement, Search and Rescue, Marine Safety and Environmental Protection, Helicopter Operations or Damage Control, the USCGC ALERT is Semper Paratus !

USCGC ALERT’s primary missions are reflected by her motto, “Rescue, Enforce, Defend.”

Coast Guard missions take the USCGC ALERT all over the Northern Pacific Ocean; from the Maritime Boundary Line between Russia and the United States and the coastal waters off the Washington, Oregon, and California. USCGC ALERT also travels the warm waters of the Central and South American coasts.

She patrols the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone to protect living marine resources from foreign fishing interests and board domestic fishing vessels to enforce federal and state fisheries and vessel safety laws. USCGC ALERT also enforces laws regarding illegal immigration and the detection, monitoring and interdiction of many forms of contraband.

The former U.S. Coast Guard Cutter John Midgett left Puget Sound on June 1, 2021 en route to its new home as part of the Vietnamese Coast Guard.

The 378-foot ship was officially transferred to the Vietnamese Coast Guard on August 14, 2020, but, due to a ban on international travel to Vietnam because of COVID-19, the voyage was postponed.

The ship is now called the Vietnamese Coast Guard Cutter CSB 8021.

Scene on the Sound: USCGC Healy completes successful test of new motor and is ready to take on the Arctic

Thursday, June 3, 2021

Photo by Deborah Cordone, USCGAUX PA1
Republished with permission

Late last week ship spotter Jan Hansen watched with interest as the Coast Guard icebreaker Healy anchored overnight in Puget Sound off Shoreline.

The next day it weighed anchor, turned and headed out north.

It sailed north and anchored offshore Port Angeles, where the photo was taken

The ship returned to Seattle following a successful test of the new motor and calibration of science equipment.

After nearly TEN months of repairs we are ready to take on the Arctic! Thanks everyone who contributed, especially our RELENTLESS engineers!

Up next: we circumnavigate North America.

Scene on the Sound: Articulated tug

Sunday, May 30, 2021

Jan Hansen captured this tug and barge sailing by Shoreline last week.

John Crawford identified it as an articulated tug barge (ATB). ATBs consist of a tank vessel (barge) and a large, powerful tug that is positioned in a notch in the stern of the barge, which enables the tug to propel and maneuver the barge.

And, he says, it could be a Crowley ATB as they operate on the West Coast.

U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy photo by Jan Hansen

Jan says "I was curious today as I looked across toward Suquamish and saw the USCGC Healy appearing to be at anchor.

"I found on the Coast Guard website that she has a Facebook page. There it was posted that Healy is preparing for sea trials with a new propulsion motor."

Description from USCG site.

USCGC HEALY (WAGB-20)
Seattle, Washington

The Coast Guard Cutter HEALY (WAGB - 20) is United States' newest and most technologically advanced polar icebreaker.

HEALY is designed to conduct a wide range of research activities, providing more than 4,200 square feet of scientific laboratory space, numerous electronic sensor systems, oceanographic winches, and accommodations for up to 50 scientists.

HEALY is designed to break 4.5 feet of ice continuously at three knots and can operate in temperatures as low as -50 degrees F. The science community provided invaluable input on lab lay-outs and science capabilities during design and construction of the ship. At a time when scientific interest in the Arctic Ocean basin is intensifying, HEALY substantially enhances the United States Arctic research capability.

Scene on the Sound: The Midnight Sun

The Midnight Sun photo by Jan Hansen

By Jan Hansen

It was great to see a U.S. cargo ship sailing by on Friday. The Midnight Sun is a cargo ship, detailed as a Vehicles Carrier. It belongs to the Tote Shipping Company.

This trip is from Anchorage to Tacoma.

From Marine Traffic:

MIDNIGHT SUN (IMO: 9232278) is a Vehicles Carrier that was built in 2003 (18 years ago) and is sailing under the flag of USA.

Its carrying capacity is 24917 t DWT and her current draught is reported to be 9 meters. Her length overall (LOA) is 255.73 meters and her width is 35.97 meters.

Shoreline resident John Crawford added this information:

From the TOTE website: "In 2017, TOTE Maritime Alaska began converting our Orca Class vessels to liquefied natural gas power, bringing the world’s most advanced, environmentally friendly technology to Alaska."

(No more bunker fuel !!!)

Also: these TOTE ships (AKA: roll-on, roll-off's) sail between Tacoma to Anchorage in about 72 hours. Turn around in each port is about 24 hours. They are the supply lifeline for Alaska, supplemented by the tug and barge industry for non-perishable supplies.

Happy and proud to be retired from TOTE's sister company, Foss.

Scene on the Sound: Submarine and Kitsap fast ferry

Saturday, May 22, 2021

On Wednesday a fast attack submarine sailed by Shoreline.

It crossed paths with a fast ferry, the Finest, from Kitsap Transit.

According to the Seattle Transit blog, the ferry began regular weekday service November 2018 and normally makes six round-trips runs between Pier 52 in downtown Seattle and Kingston on the Kitsap Peninsula, across from Edmonds.

The trip takes approximately 40 minutes, much better than the one and a half hour trip Kingston residents used to have to get to Seattle by the regular ferry, then the Sounder train or express bus.

Puget Sound is a busy place and the narrow passage along Shoreline is a great place to see the parade of boats, ships, and the occasional oil rig.

In this case it looks like a tug hauling construction equipment alongside a cargo ship.

Scene on the Sound: Race to the Straits entertains Richmond Beach residents Saturday

Monday, May 3, 2021

Wayne Pridemore took all the photos of Saturday's sailing event.

Wayne commented: "The view was spectacular of the sailing boats passing by Richmond Beach Saltwater Park on Saturday afternoon May 1, 2021.

"The fleet of boats first passed north to Edmonds and then later returned headed south towards Ballard. There are very few places in the United States where one can enjoy such a panorama. We are blessed."

Megan Korgut, owner of the Drumlin gathering place (with food trucks) in Ridgecrest at 522 NE 165th is an avid sailor. She explained what was happening on Saturday.

This was the Race to the Straits, run by Sloop Tavern Yacht Club out of Seattle. Normally this race is a two day race with the halfway point at Port Townsend, where there is a party.
But because of COVID-19, it was two days out and back to Shilshole and no party. The first day was to Whidbey Island.

Megan says the next race from Edmonds is on Wednesday, May 12.

Scene on the Sound: Tide's out and so are the mountains

Wednesday, April 14, 2021

A bright, sunny day and a very low tide brought out a few beachcombers. Seeing this, it seems amazing that aircraft carriers and submarines routinely sail these waters - not to mention the occasional oil rig.

Most of the haze was gone from the air today, making for gorgeous views of the Olympics.

When I first moved to Seattle - lo, these many years ago - the air here was still clear and leaders were very snotty about how much better we were than polluted California.

However, no one did anything proactive to keep the air clear and as the years have gone by, our air has become more and more polluted (aka haze).

Unless you were here then, you have no idea how truly stunning the mountains are when you can actually see them.

And California has some of the clearest air in the nation.

All the peaks have names, but The Brothers is the only one I can identify.
