Scene on the Sound: USCGC Polar Star returns to Seattle

USCG Polar Star

This week the Polar Star returned to its homeport in Seattle.

Three icebreakers are homeported in Puget Sound, but only one is operational at this time.

The U.S. Coast Guard’s heavy icebreaker USCGC Polar Star returned to its home port of Seattle, Washington, on August 25, 2024 after a major service life-extending overhaul – and not a moment too soon.

The medium icebreaker USCGC Healy, the service’s only other icebreaker available for operations in the Arctic and Antarctica, also sailed back into Seattle earlier this month after suffering a fire that forced its crew to abandon a planned deployment to the High North.

The Polar Sea will be moved to Mare Island Drydock in Vallejo, California, in preparation for storage in the Suisun Naval Reserve Fleet in Suisun Bay, California.

Lady Washington passed through this afternoon after a time in Everett and Anacortes.

A trip aboard is a delight as the crew works the lines that secure her to a dock and then hoist the sails. The sounds of the wind and water replace the sounds of an engines.

History is shared and experienced in a wonderful experience for young and old. I, obviously, recommend getting aboard and sharing an ahoy.

Scene on the Sound: U.S. Navy ship USS Sampson in Seattle for Seafair Fleet Week

USS Sampson makes its way from its Everett home port to Seattle for Fleet Week

SEATTLE – Sailors assigned to Arleigh Burke class Guided-Missile Destroyer USS Sampson (DDG 102) have arrived in Seattle to participate in annual Seafair activities, July 30 – August 4.

USS Sampson (DDG 102), along with vessels from the U.S. Coast Guard, offer public tours and its crew will participate in annual festivities across the city.

The Seattle visit will offer the public an opportunity to tour a U.S. Navy warship and meet with Sailors as they showcase their ships’ capabilities. It also gives the public a chance to gain a better understanding of how sea services support national defense and freedom of the seas.

USS Sampson (DDG 102) is open for public tours August 1- 4, 2024 from 10am to 4pm.

To ensure ship tour completion by 4pm, lines will be monitored for approximate entrance start time. All tours will be complete by 4pm, so the tour line may be cut earlier in the afternoon, depending on line waiting times. It is recommended that those interested in public ship tours arrive early.

Pedestrian access to public ship tours at Seattle’s Pier 46 will be through the secondary entrance for U.S. Coast Guard Base Seattle nearest the Coast Guard Museum at 1519 Alaskan Way S, Seattle, WA 98134

General parking is not available on site. Public parking lots in the area include those at the sports stadiums in walking distance of the base. From downtown Seattle, pedestrians can also use the Elliot Bay Trail to walk to the entrance.

Visit Seattle Seafair’s website for more information about the participating U.S. Coast Guard vessels.

When arriving for public tours, all visitors will be required to present government-issued photo identification, and pass through an airport-style security screening checkpoint prior to boarding the ships.

All visitors are subject to search prior to entering the security zone. Visitors are encouraged to bring as few items as possible when arriving for their tour, as there is no on-site storage. Flat-heeled, closed-toe shoes are required for tours aboard ships.

Prohibited items on board include the following:
  • Weapons: including knives, firearms and club weapons
  • Defensive chemicals or sprays: including mace and pepper spray; spray cans of any type
  • Fireworks, flammable liquids or other explosives
  • Drugs and drug-related paraphernalia illegal by federal standards, including cannabis
  • Large bags, including backpacks, diaper bags and large camera bags (small camera bags and small handbags may be permitted, but are subject to search)
  • Strollers
While general photography of this event is allowed, the use of drones in the area of Navy vessels is strictly prohibited.

Due to the nature of U.S. Navy ships, those with limited mobility, or those who require walkers or wheelchairs, may not be allowed on ship tours for their safety. In these cases, the Navy will facilitate a pier-side brief.

Scene on the Sound: The Edge

By Jan Hansen

The Celebrity Edge is now sailing past on Friday evenings headed to Alaska. On board giving lectures is my favorite naturalist and researcher Brent Nixon. He is reason enough to pack a bag and take my family past Shoreline, north through the inside passage.

From Wikipedia: Celebrity Edge is an Edge-class cruise ship operated by Celebrity Cruises, a subsidiary of Royal Caribbean Group. After the new vessel was ordered with French shipbuilder STX France in December 2014, her keel was laid in June 2017, and she was floated out in January 2018.

Upon delivery in October 2018, at 130,818 GT, she became the lead ship of the Edge class and the largest ship by gross tonnage to have joined the Celebrity fleet.

Scene on the Sound: Art Aboard!

Royal Caribbean with Bear
Photo by Jan Hansen in September 2023

According to Travel Weekly, as Royal Caribbean chairman Richard Fain told one puzzled travel agent during an inaugural cruise: 'The bear is a little bit ridiculous, and certainly unexpected,' then added, 'But isn’t she great?'

The bear's prominence symbolizes the importance of art on the Royal Caribbean fleet.

'Art is an integral part of the vessels. A ship has to appeal to all the senses,' Fain said. Art is also 'one of the more controversial things. Everyone has an opinion.'

Fain calls the eight-ton bear made of 1,340 stainless steel triangles 'Felicia.' The Denver-based British artist Lawrence Argent's stainless-steel sculpture is titled 'From Afar.'

Scene on the Sound: Shortage in the System

Monday, July 1, 2024

Jan comments: It is a beautiful time of year, and many are using our ferry systems. The Washington State Ferries are short vessels and crew. Some of the scheduled runs are being cancelled, so travelers need to do check ahead and plan.

WSDOT details: We’re expecting about 700,000 people to ride our ferries from Friday, June 28, through Sunday, July 7, 2024.

To help navigate this July Fourth travel rush, customers are encouraged to download and use the WSDOT mobile app

The app and our website allow visitors to see sailing schedules, view live terminal conditions and traffic cameras, check for rider alerts that provide service updates by route, monitor a real-time map for the location of each operating vessel and make vehicle reservations for our Anacortes/San Juan Islands or Port Townsend/Coupeville runs.

We run a complex operation of roughly 400 daily sailings. Our online tools let customers take control of their ferry travel to help plan a trip and know what to expect before they get in a ferry waiting line.

Scene on the Sound: So many people passing by Shoreline

Celebrity Edge passing by Shoreline

Story and photo by Jan Hansen

The Port of Seattle reported that last year’s cruise season hosted 291 cruises with a record 1,778,193 revenue passengers. Passengers are counted both embarking and disembarking, meaning over 907,572 individual passengers visited over a six-month season that began April 15 of last year.

This year's schedule is on a four-page document

I didn't count the number of sailings, but it certainly appears to be more traffic and more passengers on board. Some of the cruises are completely sold out!
