The Seattle Times: An unusual race in Shoreline sends runners in circles

Sunday, March 17, 2024

Route for the Boeing Creek Trail Run

On a drizzly, windy Saturday morning in Shoreline, 40 bundled-up runners crossed the start line of a slightly unusual race. Grand Douglas fir trees loomed over the participants as they began their day puffing up a trail at Shoreview Park. For the next two, four or six hours, they would run in circles.

The Seattle Times published a feature on the Boeing Creek Crawl, held in Shoreview Park on March 9, 2024. See our previous story here and The Times story here.

Polar Plunge - DIY cryotherapy

Thursday, January 2, 2020

Photos by Lee Lageschulte

Hundreds of people gathered on the Puget Sound shore at Brackett's Landing in Edmonds for the annual Polar Bear Plunge.

Members of the Richmond Beach - Edmonds Runners Club were among them but it might be a bit difficult to pick them out.

At the signal, everyone rushed toward the water.

Everyone got off the beach but it looks like a lot settled for calf deep. And a couple turned and ran back to shore immediately.

It was clear that it was exhilarating and that people were having fun. But they were ready to get out of the water.

Next event - January 1, 2021.

New Year's Run with the Richmond Beach / Edmonds Running Club
  • 12pm   Café Louvre
  • 1pm   Plunge: Brackett's Landing, Edmonds

Come out and join us for our first club run of the year!

It's a great excuse to behave yourself on New Year's Eve and start off the New Year with a "fresh start."

This year we will be changing both the start time for those of you who think an 8am on New Year's Day is a little too much and moving the location to Edmonds and joining in with the rest of the Edmonds crazies by running into the Puget Sound at 1pm.

By the way, the Puget Sound will be more than 10 degrees warmer than Green Lake's average for this time of year for those of you whom may worry.

We will meet up at our normal Sunday meeting spot of Café Louvre at 12:00pm, run the waterfront route and end up at Brackett's Landing.

Bring a bag to drop off before the run. There will be a bag drop so that your warm clothes and towel can meet you for the after plunge. Once everyone is nice and dry we will head back up to Café Louvre where we will go over last year's "napkin-o-goals" and make a new one for 2020.

Café Louvre address: 210 5th Ave S, Edmonds WA 98020

Hemlock State Brewing Company "Hibeernation Party" at Ridgecrest Public House Tuesday July 31 at 8 pm

Tuesday, July 31, 2018

By Megan Korgut

Join us this Tuesday July 31, 2018 at 8pm at Ridgecrest Public House, when we tap the last keg of beer from the first location of Shoreline's first brewery, Hemlock State Brewing Company.

Ridgecrest Public House, 520 NE 165th, Shoreline 98155.

Ridgecrest Pub and Hemlock State Brewing opened their doors in Shoreline on November 2015, and Hemlock State Brewing sold their first keg of beer to Ridgecrest Pub. So it's quite appropriate that the last keg of beer made at their first location also be at Ridgecrest Pub.

Hemlock State Brewing has been brewing their beer every Tuesday. But they recently started their "Hibeernation" while they focus on their future expansion nearby.

Since they aren't brewing this Tuesday, they will be on hand to pour you some of their Ryes over Run Belgian Rye IPA instead.

Hemlock State Brewing has been on tap at Ridgecrest Pub whenever possible. Both businesses have been sharing advice and information frequently as they evolve. This will all continue!

The one thing that will not continue is the Tuesday night pub runs to the old brewery location. We'll do one last run to their brewery this Tuesday, leaving the pub at 6.30pm as usual. All paces welcome. This run is optional, but there will be a little surprise incentive at the brewery.

Ragnar Run 2018 - Blaine to Langley

Monday, February 19, 2018

The Richmond Beach Running Club says it's time to start 2018 Ragnar plans. Last year, they fielded three teams and they hope to repeat that again.

If you have never run Ragnar, it is 24 hours of running fun, team camaraderie, and sleep deprivation (in a good way). Each person runs three legs, each one ranging from 2-10 miles and a total mileage of 10-21 miles.

Anyone interested in Ragnar is invited to join the RBRC on Sunday, March 18th, from 3:00 to 4:00pm at Salish Sea Brewing in downtown Edmonds, 518 Dayton St #104, Edmonds 98020.

On the 18th, we'll share Ragnar basics, discuss price, and select team captains. You do not have to commit to anything on the 18th, so don't worry. Just come on out to learn more.

If you cannot make this meeting, but are interested in joining Ragnar, email for information.

Richmond Beach Running Club strips for charity

Richmond Beach Running Club members
gather out of the drizzle to get ready to run

Text and photos by Larry Vogel, My Edmonds News

It was barely light when the Richmond Beach Running Club converged on the Five Corners Caffe Ladro in Edmonds in a heavy Saturday morning drizzle to kick off a hands-down creative charity event in which runners literally give the shirts off their backs to benefit homeless youth.

Dropping items into the donation box
at Perrinville
Club members are all avid runners from a variety of areas including Shoreline, Edmonds, Lake Forest Park and Everett.

They regularly meet up to celebrate their shared joy of cruising through neighborhoods and parks, along beaches, trails and city streets, filling their lungs with air, feeling their heart rates rise, and being soothed by the rhythm of their breathing and footfalls.

But as the metabolism rises and the body warms up, clothing that felt just right at the beginning of a run can become hot and burdensome, and runners often find themselves shedding clothing mid-run and tying it around their waists, stuffing it in backpacks, or even abandoning it by the side of the road.

(L to R) Cinzia Fratini, Liz Bowerman and Betty Lider
came up with the idea for the Stripper Run
After just such an experience, club members Cinzia Fratini, Liz Bowerman and Betty Lider had an “aha” moment.

Why not give the clothing they take off during a run to people who really need it. And who needs clothing more than homeless youth?

And so the Stripper Run was born.

Saturday’s inaugural event comprised a 6-mile run from Five Corners to Perrinville and then back along Olympic View Drive.

Erin Zackey adds warm socks to the
bin at 76th and 196th
Rather than limit themselves to the clothes on their backs, the runners carried shopping bags and backpacks stuffed with additional donations of socks, underwear, hats, gloves and jackets.

Along the route, volunteers posted at pre-designated collection points waited with bags and boxes to pick up the items “shed” by the runners.

All clothing will be donated to Seattle Youth Care, which provides a range of programs and services including housing, job training, education, counseling, health care and more, all aimed at helping homeless youth get off the streets and prepared for life.
