Dip with a cause raises money to fight polio

Sunday, January 21, 2024

The water was cold but the sun was shining and skies were blue

The Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park picked just the right day for their annual immersion in the icy waters of Lake Washington. They had clear skies and sunshine and temperatures many degrees higher than last week with our arctic freeze.

They had requested cash donations to support the international Rotary project to eradicate polio in the world - and jars of peanut butter to donate to the North Helpline food bank.

They got both.

We are pleased to say that with $418 cash, $100 check and $70 charges, we took in a total of $588 for Polio Plus - and many, many jars of peanut butter to go to North Helpline.

International Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years as a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative

In that time, polio cases have been reduced by more than 99.9 percent.

It’s crucial to eradicate polio from the last two countries where it remains endemic and to keep other countries polio-free - Afghanistan and Pakistan.
If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.

Rotary grant supports Miyawaki Urban Forest History Project at the Shoreline Museum

Thursday, November 2, 2023

By Judy McCully

The Environmental Rotary Club, along with Rotary Clubs of Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Mill Creek, and Emerald City, are working together to ensure the success of the Miyawaki Urban Forest History Project at the Shoreline Historical Museum by making a joint grant request to District 5030.

Amplifying the funding from these rotary clubs, on October 25, 2023 Rotary District 5030 approved our joint grant request, more than doubling the financial assistance for this worthy project.

The Rotary Grant will fund an entryway and artwork for the forest which will serve as a community gathering place and host educational programs.

This Miyawaki Urban Forest History Project aims to create a beautiful and sustainable urban forest that celebrates the history of the area and promotes environmental awareness. The entryway and artwork will reflect the rich history of the community and provide a welcoming entrance for visitors.

The Rotary Grant will help to fund this important project and ensure its success. With the support of the community and organizations like Rotary, the Miyawaki Urban Forest History Project is sure to become a valuable asset for the Shoreline community and a source of pride for years to come.

Environmental Rotary Club president, Kimberly Peterson commented, “We are excited to be a part of this community-driven project which was developed by a group of people invested in preserving the natural world and highlighting Indigenous relationships to our landscapes.”

Miyawaki Urban Forests are a unique type of urban forest developed by Japanese botanist, Dr. Akira Miyawaki. These compact forests are not only beautiful, but they also provide a host of benefits to the environment and to the people who live in urban areas.

Unlike traditional urban forests, which are often composed of just one or two species of trees, Miyawaki Urban Forests are composed of a diverse mix of native trees and shrubs, planted closely together in a small area. This high-density planting method allows the forest to grow quickly and become self-sustaining in just a few years.

One of the key benefits of Miyawaki Urban Forests is their ability to sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

The high-density planting method allows these forests to store up to 40 times more carbon than traditional urban forests.

Additionally, these forests also provide many other benefits including the reduction of urban heat island effects, reduced air and noise pollution, and improved biodiversity. Overall, Miyawaki Urban Forests are an innovative and effective way to improve urban environments while also mitigating the effects of climate change.

By involving community members in the planning, planting, and maintenance of the forest, the project will help to build a sense of community and collective responsibility.

Additionally, by documenting the history of the project and the community members involved, the project will help to preserve and celebrate the unique cultural heritage of the area.

Overall, a Miyawaki Urban Forest History Project provides a range of benefits to the community it serves, from mitigating the effects of climate change to improving the health and well-being of community members.

The forest will be planted on the land adjacent to the Museum at N 185th and Linden Ave N in Shoreline.

Annual Rotary Cup Shorewood - Shorecrest football game Friday, October 20, 2023

Monday, October 16, 2023

Shorewood won the 2022 Cup
LFP Rotarian Allen Merry is holding the cup.

The 2023 Rotary Cup Football Game between Shorewood HS and Shorecrest HS is scheduled for Friday, October 20, 2023.

This crosstown rivalry has a long history; this will be the 45th Annual Rotary Cup.

Tradition is that at the end of the game, members of Lake Forest Park Rotary and Shoreline Rotary take the Rotary Banner out on the field and the winning team gets behind the banner for a photo op.

The photo is from last year’s event when the Shorewood Stormrays (renamed from the Thunderbirds in 2021) won the game against the Shorecrest Scots, 22-7.

They were ecstatic, probably because they had lost the previous eight years in a row.

It should be noted that Shoreline Rotary will be inducting Rob Petschl, the Shorewood varsity head football coach, on October 18th at our next in-person / hybrid meeting.

The 2023 Rotary Cup Game:
  • Where: Shoreline Stadium, 400 NE 185th Street, Shoreline, WA 98155. The stadium is just to the west of I-5 on NE 185th Street, immediately adjacent to the Shoreline School District Headquarters and Conference Center.
  • When: 5:30pm gates open, 7:00pm game time.
  • How Much: Adult admission is $7.00, Seniors and Children $5.00.

Correction: Rob Petschl is the Shorewood varsity head football coach. The Shoreline Schools Athletic Director is Don Dalziel.

The Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park celebrated 37 years of community and worldwide service at its meeting on Wednesday, September 6, 2023.

Celebrating with us was District Governor (DG) Kaj Pedersen.

Kaj was born in Zambia and educated in Zimbabwe and Scotland. He has over 20 years of experience in venture creation technology and is a software executive for AstrumU

Kaj is passionate about Rotary’s moto and principles and our goal to eradicate polio. He has served as the Bellevue Breakfast Club President and Assistant Governor.

His inspiring message urges members to continue doing the projects we enjoy: our enthusiasm and success in helping others will naturally attract new members.

In celebration of our 37th birthday, past DG Alan Merry gave a synopsis of Ben Cashman’s report on his first year as president of the newly founded LFP club.

Terry Smith was awarded his first Paul Harris fellowship award, Chuck Paulsen his first ruby, and Robin Roat her second ruby.

Congratulations, with a big applause and thanks to all three of you for your generosity in Rotary.

Thank you, DG Kai Pedersen for your inspiring message, and Assistant Governor Tom Broetje for celebrating our club’s birthday with us. Our best to you both!
