Rotary Club of LFP hosts LFP PD Operations Lieutenant Rhonda Lehman

Operations Lieutenant Rhonda Lehman
Story and photos by Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park

Operations Lieutenant Rhonda Lehman with the Lake Forest Park Police Department, smiled and joked as she gave the Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park a glimpse of her personal history at their recent meeting.

Raised by her father, she grew up in this region and attended several local schools.

It was after her first child was born that she fulfilled her lifelong dream of attending and graduating from the police academy.

It's heartwarming to know that, near retirement after 30 years of policing, Lt. Lehman has not lost her feminine charm or delightful sense of humor.

In fact, one sees that she has had a strong influence in giving the LFP Force a more personable presence in our community.
Lieutenance Lehman and Chief Mike Hardan

Criminals are dealt with in our city but, "Just like a doctor serves the public, so do the police," she affirms. "The citizens of LFP are our customers."

Congratulations on a long and successful career and best wishes Lieutenant Rhonda Lehman! Thanks for sharing with us today - and glad you slipped in that little story about the Chief.

The goal is to create a Pollinator Pathway
from Eastern to Western Washington
The July 12, 2023 speaker at the Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park was Linda Holman, Horticulture Consultant for the club's new Operation Pollination project.

Linda told the group that "The Environmental Sustainability Committee has begun a project in conjunction with Rotary International’s new program Operation Pollination.

She said that "We have begun by creating three sites in Pfingst Animal Acres Park which will highlight pollinator and native plants. The goal is to create a healthy environment to sustain our bee population.

Rotary members have spent many hours working in the pollinator garden

"We are working with Rotary groups both locally and around the country to build this project. The primary goal is to build a healthy bee corridor from Eastern to Western Washington and also to provide education to the community."

Linda Holman, 2nd from left, is in charge of the project

Operation Pollination begins in Lake Forest Park

Wednesday, April 19, 2023

LFP Rotary volunteers at the Pollinator Garden

On Saturday April 15, 2023 members of the Lake Forest Park Rotary Club began the Operation Pollination project, located in Pfingst Animal Acres park.

The work Saturday was the most challenging part of the project as it required removal of many plants which had been firmly established there.

A number of these plants were transplanted to the street side of the park where they hopefully will thrive.

The site was then cleared and cleaned up to prepare for soil rebuilding and planting.

There will be signage once the plants  are in place as a part of the community outreach which is one of our major goals.

Our next work party will be on Saturday April 29, 2023.  We thank the City of LFP for their support and invite community members to come out to see our project as it progresses.

Photo by Laura Rivera on Unsplash
On April 22, 2023 from 9:00am to 2:00pm Rotary District 5030 will hold a battery recycling event in Lake Forest Park.

There will be a drop-off site at the Lake Forest Park Town Center on the lower level across from the main entrance.

Batteries collected there will be taken to the main pick up site at the Bellevue Downtown Park where Redwood Materials, a California company, will collect them for recycling.

Here is the list of acceptable items.
  • Cell phones, laptops, tablets, electric toothbrushes, wireless headphones, power tool batteries.
  • Bluetooth headphones and headsets, keyboards, mouse, digital cameras (pull memory card), e-readers (Kindles and Nooks), game controllers (X-Box, Nintendo, PlayStation), Smartwatches.
  • Smoke / fire / carbon monoxide detectors IF 10yr without battery changers (ion or photoelectric alarms)

Generally they will accept lithium-ion and nickel metal hydride batteries - any rechargeable device with a lithium-ion battery

You may bring the entire device with no need to remove battery from the device

Before dropping off a personal device, you should sign out of all your accounts and perform a factory reset.

This is a great opportunity to take care of all these otherwise non-recyclable devices and participate in an important environmental program.

LFP Rotary Polar Bear Dip raises funds to eradicate polio

Monday, January 23, 2023

LFP Rotary members run to Lake Washington
The 4th annual Polar Bear Dip on Saturday, January 21, 2023 was a splashing success in Rotary's campaign to eradicate polio!

Undaunted by the snow at 1:00pm, participants and supporters gathered at Sheridan Beach on Lake Washington.

Our thanks to LFP Police Chief Mike Harden, Lt Diego Zanella and the many other handsome officers whose presence added to the significance of the effort.

Eldon’s delicious chicken noodle soup – thanks Eldon! - and Starbucks coffee – thanks Allison! - warmed us as Robin’s heartfelt testimony of giving polio drops in Ethiopia encouraged our generosity in the cause.

With that, the brave - or crazy? - swimmers stripped off their coats (or in Ed Sterner’s case, bathrobe) to reveal shivering bodies who ran eagerly to plunge (or wade cautiously) into the water.

It was reassuring to have the Marine Police there – thank you so much! - in case of a mishap, but we’re thankful none occurred.

Smiles, hoots, and cheers greeted the stalwart polar bears – our heroes of the day! - as they scrambled back to the warmth of a towel and a hug from proud family members.

Even the sun came out to give its blessing. A big thank-you to all who came! You helped make this a successful – and fun! – event. And special thanks to organizer, Robin Roat, and her team who made it possible. See you next January!

Rotary Sharing Tree is a huge success, donating over $17,000 to local organizations

The Sharing Tree at Town Center
By Larry French
Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park

Many years ago, Rotarian Tim Davis undertook the move of the Giving Tree/Sharing Tree to Lake Forest Park.

Since that time the Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park has faithfully followed through providing local individuals and families in need with support to make their Holidays a bit brighter.

After two years of changes from the pandemic where only gift cards could be donated, our Club began accepting gifts as well.

Jenn, Kelly, and Larry at North Helpline
The community response was amazing as was the support from our Club members who set up and attended the Sharing Tree.

With cooperation from the Lake Forest Park Mall management company, Merlone Geier Partners, the Sharing Tree was once again set up on the lower level of the Mall near Santa’s photo booth.

Gregory, Tanya, and Larry at the
Center for Human Services
It was attended daily from Thanksgiving weekend until Christmas by Rotary Club members and by Shorecrest High School’s Interact Club.

Our Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park has traditionally partnered with
  • Center for Human Services (who received $1,745 in gift cards and an estimated $12,260 in gifts),
  • North Helpline (who received $1,260 in gift cards) and
  • the YMCA (where teens received almost $2,000 in gift cards).
Wow! That’s over $17,000.

Our deepest gratitude to our neighbors in LAKE FOREST PARK, SHORELINE, KENMORE, BOTHELL and LAKE CITY. Your generosity impacted hundreds of individuals.

Musical play: “The Little Town That Could,” Tuesday, December 6, 2022 at Third Place Commons

Saturday, December 3, 2022

The Rotary Environmental Club of Puget Sound is sponsoring the musical play: “The Little Town That Could,” Tuesday, December 6, 2022 at 6:30pm at Third Place Commons in Lake Forest Park Town Center, intersection of Bothell and Ballinger Way NE..

The play is free and open to the public so come join us in an all community written and performed musical as we sing our way together to saving our Kokanee salmon.

This 30 minute, child-friendly musical takes place in Lake Forest Park's Lyon Creek where two little salmon, Frye and Alevin, befriend Tillie, a young girl, and ask her for help.

Because of climate change, the creek is warming, and the two fish are not sure they will be able to survive to make it back home. Tillie is tasked with a big job to save her fish friends.

After asking several adults to help her to no avail, Tillie begins to learn that through optimism and a belief in herself and her community that even what seems impossible can be surmounted.
