Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park announces contest winners in "What Peace Means to Me" competition

Saturday, March 20, 2021

K-2 Winner Dahlia Mitchell

ROTARY CLUB OF LAKE FOREST PARK
“WHAT PEACE MEANS TO ME” CONTEST WINNERS

The Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park is proud to announce the winners of the 2021 “What Peace Means To Me” Contest.

A panel of four Rotarians judged all of the entries in each of five categories (Kindergarten to 2nd Grade, 3rd to 4th Grade, 5th to 8th Grade, 9th to 12th Grade, and Adult) and were very pleased with the thoughtfulness and the wide range of genres that were represented: haiku, digital illustration, essay, poetry, and artwork.

We hope to make this an annual event and look forward to seeing next year’s entries.

We invite and encourage everyone interested in Rotary to investigate how we support the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self” and our Peacebuilder Mission by attending one of our meetings. The Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park meets every Wednesday via Zoom. Our virtual Coffee Klatch begins at 7:45am and the Meeting begins at 8am, ending promptly at 9am.

To join the Zoom, please use this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/2257977384

We sincerely thank everyone who entered the Contest!

The winners are as follows:

Kindergarten to Second Grade Category: Dahlia Mitchell - see drawing at top of article

Third to Fifth Grade Category: Eve Goldman

Peace

A cool breeze blowing in my face, the shade of a towering oak tree, and
the soft grass surrounding me.

The swing of a hammock and the slight thip, thip, thip, thip of pages
turning in a book.

The laughter of my friends and the smiles on each of their faces.

Hands of all colors and shades joining together making an unbreakable
chain and no fighting between countries.

Looking out the window to snow flakes falling from the sky.

Art.

Music.

That’s what peace means to me.

Sixth to Eighth Grade Category: Angelina Vaughn

Peace

Peace is the blue sky and the birds whistling a jovial song.

Peace is the laughter and smiles of the cheery people.

Peace is calm and blissful. Like the glistening blue lake.

Peace is the feeling that you’re not alone, even when daunting
challenges and trials come your way.

Peace is like the wind blowing through your hair, wild and free.

Peace is like a song, being carried in the wind, filling up the trees with
glee, and making their branches sway about.

Peace is the sun and green grass, glowing with tranquility.

Peace is where there is equity for everyone, and everyone is
supported.

Peace is for everyone, and everyone deserves peace.

Ninth to Twelfth Grade Category: Flora Cummings

Beneath the Surface

A thousand paths of
quiet infinities
threaded through the cobalt depths,
Weave between pillars of
haloed light
illuminating the unbroken
seamless blue of
darkening water,
This imperfect mirror of
a fading sky
the world above,
As gathering night bleeds shadows
into to sea

A thousand words of
introspective silence
merged with a calm, intangible
state of existing,
The weight of the world
no longer matters,
floating in the water,
Suspended in place
in time, in thought,
Simply another drop
lost in a vast ocean,
without purpose
or destination

A thousand moments of
untethered turmoil
claims the fierceness of
a seething tempest,
Waves shatter
and clouds are torn
to the beat of thunder and rain,
But,
the storm on the surface
calamitous, unyielding
means nothing
to the eternal infinities
within

Adult Category: Alison Leigh Lilly

The Myth of the Neutral Tool

It has happened again — a man or a boy, and a gun. It's still happening, even now. If not here, then somewhere, in this country, in this world. There is almost no end to it. There is almost no space between one moment and the next, between the pain and the noise it makes.

What do we do now?

There are times when I am so deep in anger, anxiety or sorrow that there is nothing else I can do but turn back towards the animal I am, turn back to the earth and my own earthy body that is a part of it.

Outside, the rain is falling as fog rolls in from the ocean. Waves push and pull at the shore. There is almost no space between one wave and the next. I try to still my body, and listen. Back and forth. Rise and fall. My lungs fill with air and then empty again. My body pushes hard against its edges as if it might break open — then pulls back into itself, flinching, recoiling from the raw sensations of sound and sight and skin. The world pushes in on me, heavy and noisy at first — then pulls away again into the quiet, incomprehensible confusion of everything that is beyond me.
. . .

Shoreline Rotary: Thank you Community Friends for Helping Families in Need!

Friday, January 22, 2021

By Shoreline Rotary

The Shoreline Rotary Foundation set a goal of $5000 to help families in Shoreline through the school district’s Family Advocates.

We were thinking there would be no way we could meet that challenge, but we knew if we did, we would be providing much needed help for local families with school-age children who are really struggling to make ends meet.

Well, YOU did it! Not only did you meet the goal, you exceeded it!

You are directly helping more than 260 families with $25 gift cards to either Safeway/Albertsons or Fred Meyer/QFC!

Every dollar you gave will help a family in crisis at a time when they most need a helping hand, and it will be your hand that is extended to them!

With an Urgent Need grant from Rotary District 5030, and an additional generous donation from Lake Forest Park Rotary, you helped raise over $6700 to help those who need it most.

“Kelly” just used the next-to-the-last diaper, and the peanut butter jar is almost empty. The unemployment check is supposed to arrive day-after-tomorrow. If she just had a little bit of money to see her through, she could make it to the end of the week...

Yes, YOU are the one who helped her, and others like “Kelly,” see the light at the end of that dark road. What a boost of confidence for her to know that someone has her back when she needed it most!

You can still help families in need by going to the Shoreline Rotary website at
https://www.shorelinerotary.com/donate/

Under the word “Fund” use the drop-down menu to select “Family Advocate” to make your tax-deductible contribution. Shoreline Rotary will continue to support this effort.

Every dollar you give will be distributed to the Shoreline School District Family Advocate Fund by the Shoreline Rotary Foundation which is a 501(c)(3) non-profit; EIN: 91-1614940.

The crisis is not over for many students and their families. You can continue to help.

Lake Forest Park Police Department “Shop with a Cop” 2020

Every year the Lake Forest Park Police Department partners with the LFP Rotary, LFP Police Officers Guild and multiple surrounding police agencies, including Shoreline, Kenmore and WSP to host our Shop with a Cop event.

In previous years we receive nominations for deserving elementary school students and their families from local schools. 15 children are then chosen to participate. Each child is paired with their very own “Cop” when they arrive at the police department. During a provided breakfast they both go over they and their families' wish list.

Everyone is transported to a local Target where the fun really begins. After shopping and purchasing all their gifts, they are transported back to the police department where they have lunch and wrap all their gifts prior to being picked up by their parents.

This year looked much different, however we realized that this event would greatly benefit families who are struggling in the current environment. It was decided to go ahead with the event, only scaled back to 5 children from Brookside Elementary and 5 from LFP Elementary.

The family advocate provided all the necessary information on these 10 families, along with wish and needs lists. LFP employees then completed all the shopping and wrapping. The family advocate then assisted with scheduling between the police and all the families so the gifts could be delivered.

Over 100 gifts were delivered to 10 families with a total of 26 children receiving items they requested. Each family also received a $100 Target gift card for anything else they may need.

All of this would not have been possible without generous donations from the LFP Rotary and the LFP Police Officers Guild. We are hopeful we will get back to our regular event next year and look forward to having a great time shopping with the kids again.

LFP PD would like to thank all past and future supporters of this incredible event. The Lake Forest Park Police Department invites anyone who would like to donate to “Shop with a Cop” to send their donations to the North Sound Police Foundation, P.O. Box 12006 Mill Creek, WA 98082.

Please note that the donation is for Lake Forest Park Police and the Shop with a Cop program. Checks should be made payable to the North Shore Police Foundation.

For questions, please call Lt. Lehman 206-957-2852.

You Can be A Hero for a Family in Need

Friday, December 18, 2020

The Shoreline Rotary Foundation has launched its end-of-the-year fundraising effort to benefit the Shoreline School District Family Advocate Fund.

“These funds are crucial for the post-winter break time when all of the holiday support programs are done and there is less assistance for families,” says Susie Moore, the School District Lead Family Advocate.

Funds you contribute between December 16th and January 15, 2021 will be converted into $25 gift cards, for Fred Meyer/QFC and Safeway/Albertsons, and distributed by the Family Advocates who serve students and families throughout our Shoreline School District.

Your generous donation will go directly to help families in need, and will also be supplemented by the Rotary District 5030 Urgent Community Needs Grant program. Our goal is to raise $5000 to purchase 200 gift cards.

  • $25 helps one family in need;
  • $50 helps two families;
  • $100 will help four families!

Go to the Shoreline Rotary website today at https://www.shorelinerotary.com/ and click on the “DONATE” button to make your tax-deductible contribution. Please make a note in the comment section that you are donating to the “Family Advocate fund.”

All of your donated dollars will be distributed to the Shoreline School District Family Advocate Fund by the Shoreline Rotary Foundation which is a 501(c)(3) non-profit; EIN: 91-1614940.

This is a critical time for many students and their families. Please help them by giving now!

Volunteers make our world go round - PTA Holiday Basket event serves 700 families

Tuesday, December 15, 2020

Your heart will be warmed by this news! Shannon McMaster and Stacy Cotton (and Stacy's mother Marti who made masks for the 75 volunteers) are educators and super organizers who have been long time supporters of and volunteers for the Shoreline PTSA Holiday Basket program.

They, with the help of Shoreline PTA Council co-presidents Amy Reed and Heather Segars, organized envelopes with gift cards and pick-up times for nearly 700 Shoreline Schools families.

On December 12, 2020 their newly designed Covid Safe Holiday Basket event took place for families who have children enrolled in the Shoreline School District and could use a little extra help this Holiday Season.

Each family received gift and grocery cards in a drive through event at the Shoreline Center.

Nearly 700 families and several thousand children (upwards of 1500) received gift cards for gifts and a $100 card for groceries.

This super organized event handed out over $110,000 in gift cards including $50,000 in grocery vouchers from the city of Shoreline, donations from Shoreline and Lake Forest Park Rotaries, Alpha Delta, Hopelink, the Shoreline Fire Department, Dale Turner YMCA and numerous community individuals.

Special thanks to Shannon and Stacy, volunteers and contributors who made the holidays a little brighter for many!

Rotary Sharing Tree

Saturday, November 28, 2020

This year it's a donation box - but the spirit is the same

Rotary of Lake Forest Park has had a Sharing Tree in Town Center for many Decembers.

This year is different, of course, but the Rotary Club is not about to stop their tradition of helping children during the holidays.

This year the Rotary Club will place a donation box on the lower level of the Lake Forest Park Mall to accept gift cards, cash, or checks.

The Donation Box will be in place from November 28 – December 20, 2020.

Here's what to put in the box: Gift cards focused on local stores that provide toys, clothing, electronics, etc. for children and teens.

The cards will be given to Center for Human Services, North Helpline, and Youth Gift Baskets.

By participating in The Sharing Tree, the community’s collective effort will make a substantial impact for children to experience the joy of the holidays!

  • When: November 28 - December 20, 2020
  • What: Gift cards should be focused on local stores that provide toys, clothing, electronics, etc. for children and teens.
  • Who: Charitable organizations collecting these contributions are Center for Human Services, North Helpline, and Youth Gift Baskets.

By participating in The Sharing Tree, the community's collective effort will make a substantial impact for children to experience the joy of the holidays!

Sunday, November 22, 2020

On November 12, 2020, the Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park was proud to be recognized as a Peacebuilder Club by Rotary International.

Peacebuilder Clubs are a Rotarian movement creating energy and momentum for peaceful conflict resolution around the world.

The Peacebuilder Club program is designed to enhance Rotary International’s mission of “advancing world understanding, goodwill, and peace” through the promotion of programs and projects that align with the Rotary Area of Focus – Peace, Conflict Prevention, and Conflict Resolution.

The Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park’s Mission
as a Peacebuilder Club is that:

We will strive through all our actions to achieve
Peace Through Service

To do so we will incorporate the following into all we do:

Understand that peace has many definitions

Focus on fair and honest communication

Promote and facilitate conflict resolution

Create environments where peace can happen

Primarily focus on local projects while being inclusive of international efforts

The Peacebuilder Committee is currently identifying projects we can pursue that align with this Mission.

We plan to keep the readers of the Shoreline Area News updated on these projects and to solicit the community’s input and participation.

We invite and encourage everyone interested in Rotary to investigate how we support the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self” and our Peacebuilder Mission by attending one of our meetings.
